Autumn in Andorra: colours and landscapes not to miss

Routes, villages and seasonal plans in the Pyrenees

Autumn in Andorra: where to see the colours, Madriu and Incles routes, villages such as Pal and Ordino, seasonal mushrooms and practical tips for your trip.

The colours of autumn in Andorra: a natural symphony

Autumn in Andorra is a good time to watch the mountain landscape change colour and to walk the mid-altitude routes. If you are staying at Hotel Grau Roig, which you can see in the MICHELIN Guide, much of the country is within reach on a day trip. The colour depends each year on the weather and the altitude, so it is best to keep your programme flexible and ask about route conditions before setting off.

Where to look for colour

The valleys and mid-altitude villages tend to be the simplest option for seeing the autumn landscape with ease. To get your bearings, these are the areas you can start with:

  • Madriu-Perafita-Claror Valley: a cultural landscape on the World Heritage List.
  • Incles Valley: between El Tarter and Canillo, with mountain pine and fir forests.
  • Sorteny: a nature park of 1,080 hectares in Ordino.
  • Engolasters: a 7-hectare lake that is easy to reach by car.

For the end of the day

Back at Grau Roig, the spa has a heated pool, hot tub, sauna, Turkish bath and relaxation area. It is open from 10:00 to 21:00 and access is free for guests. For dinner, see the hotel restaurants: La Vaquería, El Teatro del Vino, La Marmita, La Fromagerie or Secret Room.

Cultural and adventure activities

If the weather turns, Andorra offers plenty of indoor alternatives and a rich heritage. You can alternate walks with museums and Romanesque churches, and the hotel lists mountain activities such as hiking, 4×4 and quad routes, climbing, via ferrata and horse riding, which you can ask about depending on the time of year.

Explore the best autumn trails in Andorra

Before choosing, bear one thing in mind: Visit Andorra recommends walking routes above 1,700 metres between late June and late September, for safety. So as autumn goes on, it is wise to stick to lower ground. There are more ideas in our guide to hiking routes in Andorra.

Madriu-Perafita-Claror Valley

This covers 4,247 hectares, about 10% of the country, and joined UNESCO’s World Heritage List on 1 July 2004 as a cultural landscape. What makes it interesting is seeing how its pastures, paths, water and forests have been managed over the centuries. You reach it from Engolasters, and there is more detail in our article on the Madriu Valley.

Camí de l’Obac, in Incles

The Incles Valley, U-shaped owing to its glacial origin, has several routes. For autumn, the most peaceful is the Camí de l’Obac: 2.6 kilometres through shady forest beside the river, low in difficulty and suitable for children.

Estanys de Tristaina

This is a 4.39 km circular route with +210/-210 m, of moderate difficulty, setting off from the Coma car park at Ordino Arcalís and reaching 2,330 metres. Given the altitude, it is an early-autumn outing at most: the official route sheet recommends it until late September, and the scenery is high mountain, more lakes than forests.

Sorteny

The park has more than 700 species of flowering plants and themed excursions throughout the year on birds, glacial cirques or ancient forests. You get there on the CG-3 towards Ordino Arcalís, taking the CS-370 after El Serrat. The staffed Borda de Sorteny hut opens in winter and summer; check whether it is serving in autumn.

Engolasters and Les Pardines

The lake is accessible by car and suitable for children. You can extend your visit with the Les Pardines walking route, with fine views of the valley peaks, and see the church of Sant Miquel, with its 17-metre bell tower.

Picturesque villages in Andorra to visit in autumn

If you would prefer something quieter, the villages are an excellent choice at this time of year. You will find more in our guide to routes through the villages of Andorra.

Ordino

The Camí Ral sets out from here towards Llorts, an easy 6 kilometres through Sornàs, Ansalonga and La Cortinada. It is one of the best walks of the season, as the tourist office suggests it from May to October, weather and ground permitting. You will find all the sections in our article on the Royal Road of Andorra.

Canillo

This is the parish on this list closest to Grau Roig. Here you have the church of Sant Joan de Caselles, from the 11th and 12th centuries, and the 603-metre Tibetan bridge. There is also the Roc del Quer viewpoint, a 20-metre walkway with 12 metres suspended in mid-air, open all year round weather permitting. At the end you will see the sculpture “The Ponderer” by Miguel Ángel González. For other spots, see our route of panoramic viewpoints.

Pal

Set above 1,500 metres, it has retained its traditional stone, wood and slate. Its church of Sant Climent dates from the late 11th and early 12th centuries, with a three-storey bell tower.

La Massana

This pairs well with Pal. Here you have the Camí Ral de La Massana, 6.1 km beside the river to Sant Antoni de la Grella, and the Farga Rossell, one of the most important forges of the 19th century.

Sant Julià de Lòria

The Juberri Gardens offer a stroll with waterfalls, sculptures and views over the valley, and they are a good place to watch the sunset. Sant Serni de Nagol, from 1055, occupies a raised spot above the Sant Julià valley.

Outdoor activities in Andorra during autumn

As well as walking, there are other ways to make the most of these weeks. Availability changes with each activity’s calendar, so ask before counting on it.

Landscape photography

Caldea suggests four spots for autumn photos: Salvador Dalí’s sculpture Noblesse du temps in Andorra la Vella, with the river and mountains behind it; Engolasters lake; Roc del Quer, with views over the Valira d’Orient valley; and Arcalís, with the “O” sculpture at the foot of the slopes.

4×4 routes and horse riding

The hotel includes 4×4 and quad routes and horse riding among its mountain activities. Ask whether outings are available for your travel dates.

Wellness

For a rainy day, the hotel spa is the simplest option. The outdoor Summer Lounge only opens in summer, but the heated pool, sauna and Turkish bath are available throughout spa hours. There is also a fitness room with Technogym machines.

Seasonal food

Mushrooms are the dish of the season in Andorra: grilled, in risotto or as carpaccio, as a starter, a main course or with a game stew. At the hotel, La Marmita focuses on market-led, seasonal cooking and La Fromagerie on fondues and raclettes, very tempting when the temperature drops. If you enjoy wine, El Teatro del Vino puts pairing at the centre, and the cellar has more than 300 labels.

Tips and recommendations for enjoying Andorra in autumn

A few practical ideas for organising your trip:

  • Footwear and clothing: the weather can change quickly in the mountains. Bring suitable footwear and layers.
  • Altitude: above 1,700 metres, routes are only recommended from late June to late September.
  • Access: check for transport or restrictions in each case. The Tristaina gondola and the Incles buggy run seasonally.
  • Opening times: confirm those of each museum, viewpoint or restaurant in the low season.

An autumn that ends in snow

Autumn is the run-up to Grau Roig’s main season: skiing, from November to April. If your trip coincides with the end of the season, check when the Grandvalira slopes open. Snow brings further activities you can ask about, such as snowshoeing, mushing, snowmobiles or ski touring, and La Vaquería awaits you at the foot of the slopes.

What to choose if you only have one day

A simple combination: Roc del Quer in the morning, a stroll around Canillo and back to the hotel for the spa and dinner. If you would rather walk, the Camí Ral in Ordino is the best alternative. And if the day dawns clear early in the season, consider the Madriu from Engolasters.

And when it rains

Andorra has enough museums, churches and shops to fill a day. In Canillo or Ordino, there is heritage to see regardless of the weather. And in Escaldes-Engordany, Caldea is another way to end the day.
