Dog sledding in Andorra: formats, ages and booking
Book a driving route or a ride on a dog sled in Grau Roig
Dog sledding in Andorra appeals to every kind of traveller: families, couples and groups of friends. You travel through the forests of Grau Roig on a sled pulled by Nordic breeds (husky, Samoyed or Alaskan malamute) and, if you like, you can feel like a musher for a day by driving along snowy tracks yourself. Here we focus on the essentials: which format to choose, what age is required and how to fit it into your trip. If you first want to know how the activity works and how the dogs do their job, see our guide to what mushing in Andorra is.
Which format to choose
The main decision is whether you ride as a passenger or drive. The operator RocRoi, based in Grau Roig, lists these options:
- Passenger ride: 2, 3 or 5 km, with a professional musher in charge of the sled. This is the best choice with children or for a first outing.
- Driving: 2 km, after instructions and with the musher nearby. Monday to Friday only.
- Night ride: 5 km, or 10 km with dinner included.
- Combination: 2 km of mushing with 30 or 60 minutes of snowmobiling, around an hour and a half to two hours in total for the shorter version.
- Multi-adventure day: a day with several snow activities, including 1 km by sled. Visit Andorra describes a Premium Adult pass of this kind.
A tip to help you decide
If it is your first outing and you are unsure between 2 and 5 km, think about the cold rather than the distance. As a passenger you barely move, so a short trip may be enough with young children. Longer routes and night outings are best enjoyed well wrapped up and without rushing.
Ages and requirements
Children
On most RocRoi rides, the minimum age is 3 with an adult. On some combinations it rises to about 5 or 6, so check the specific option.
To drive the sled
RocRoi sets a minimum age of 18 for the outing where you drive. As conditions may vary by operator and season, always confirm before you book.
How many people per sled
It depends on weight and fitness: RocRoi states 1 to 3 people per sled, with combinations such as two adults and a child aged 3 to 8, or one adult and two small children. If there are more of you, you will need to divide into several sleds, so mention it when you book.
Season and what to expect
This is a winter activity and it depends on the snow. The ski season in Andorra usually runs from November to April, and specific dates appear in the operator’s calendar. Places are limited in high season, so it is advisable to book ahead. The route may change or the outing may be postponed because of the weather or snow conditions.
At the end of most outings you can get close to the dogs, pet them and take photos.
What to bring
Ski or winter clothing, ski gloves, sunglasses or goggles, sunscreen and snow or walking boots. For night outings, add extra warm layers, a hat and a neck gaiter.
What is included
According to RocRoi, professional guides or mushers, parking and third-party liability insurance are included. Accident insurance is bought separately at the centre. The meeting point is next to the Cubil car park, in a beige yurt with a white flag.
