Airports near Andorra: how to reach Grau Roig without a car

Toulouse, Barcelona or La Seu d'Urgell: which airport to choose and how to travel up in comfort

02 November 2026
Closest airport to Andorra: La Seu d'Urgell, though Toulouse and Barcelona usually suit better. How to reach Grau Roig without a car.

The closest airport to Andorra is Andorra-La Seu d’Urgell, across the border in Catalonia, because the Principality has no airport of its own. It may be the nearest, but it is rarely the most practical: it offers few flights, and most international travellers land in Toulouse or Barcelona instead. From either city, the most comfortable way to reach Grau Roig without driving is a private transfer with a chauffeur, with no changes and your luggage looked after from door to door.

Which airports are close to Andorra

Grandvalira publishes these reference distances to its ski area. Treat them as a guide, since the actual mileage depends on your route and where you are heading:

  • Andorra-La Seu d’Urgell: 27 km.
  • Lleida-Alguaire: 150 km.
  • Carcassonne: 176 km.
  • Toulouse-Blagnac: 195 km.
  • Barcelona-El Prat: 200 km.
  • Reus: 240 km.
  • Girona-Costa Brava: 260 km.

Distance tells only part of the story. To choose well, look at three things: which direct flights leave from your city, what time you land and which side of Andorra you enter from. Grau Roig lies high up in the country, next to the mouth of the Envalira Tunnel, and that changes the calculation.

Toulouse or Barcelona: which suits a trip to Grau Roig

Toulouse-Blagnac: the French approach

From Toulouse, the road climbs through France to the border at Pas de la Casa. One transfer operator estimates 193 km and around 2 h 55 min from the airport to that point. For Grau Roig, this route has a clear advantage: the western entrance of the Envalira Tunnel is about 300 metres from the turn-off to the sector, so you do not need to pass through Andorra la Vella or the villages in the valley.

It is the logical option if you are coming from France, the United Kingdom or northern Europe and can find a direct flight at a reasonable hour. Check the road before you set off: the resort’s access page mentions a provisional bus line because of a closure on the RN-20, so it is worth confirming the situation for your travel dates.

Barcelona-El Prat: more flights, more valley

Barcelona usually offers the widest choice of connections, including long-haul services. The usual route follows the C-16 and N-145 to the border at La Seu d’Urgell: about 190 km and nearly 2 h 45 min to Andorra. Once inside the country, you continue along the CG-2 through Encamp and Canillo. Grandvalira quotes around 26 minutes from Andorra la Vella to Soldeu and another 15 from there to the Grau Roig area, in normal conditions.

It has two weak points: the drive through the valley and the busier hours on changeover days. If you land in the late afternoon, consider spending the night in Barcelona and driving up the next morning: you will arrive rested, and with daylight to enjoy the mountains.

Andorra-La Seu d’Urgell: the nearest, with a limited schedule

This is the airfield that serves the Principality directly. Air Nostrum operates the Madrid and Palma routes under a contract that ends in late 2026, so check the winter timetable before building your trip around it. If you have your own or a chartered aircraft, this is the most direct way in: read our guide on how to reach Grau Roig by private jet.

Other airports

Carcassonne, Girona, Reus and Lleida-Alguaire can be useful if they are the only ones served by a direct flight from your city. They offer fewer onward options and, in general, a longer road journey, so it makes sense to arrange your transfer before buying the ticket.

How to reach Grau Roig without a car

Private transfer with a chauffeur

This is the option that best suits a stay in the snow: you are met at the terminal, you travel with all your luggage, and you depend on neither timetables nor winter driving. The hotel’s location page mentions private chauffeured transfers from Toulouse or Barcelona; raise it when you book to confirm the terms and availability.

Helicopter

The same page mentions the hotel’s helipad and flights between Andorra, Barcelona and Toulouse through Heliand, subject to prior authorisation and the weather. If this appeals, ask the hotel well in advance and always keep a road alternative in reserve.

Scheduled coach

There are regular connections, although they involve changing vehicles with your luggage. According to Grandvalira, these are the main lines:

  • From Toulouse: Andbybus, stopping at Matabiau station and the airport.
  • From Barcelona: Directbus (Sants and El Prat), AndBus (airport) and ALSA (Estació del Nord). Allow around 3 to 4 hours for the journey.
  • From Lleida: Hife, AndBus or ALSA, connecting with the high-speed train from Madrid.
  • From Reus and the Costa Daurada: Hife.

Within Andorra, national lines L3 and L4 run along the CG-2 towards Pas de la Casa. Seasonal frequencies and stops are published on bus.ad: check them before you travel, especially on Sundays and public holidays, when services are less frequent.

Train and road

Andorra has no railway station. On the French side, the most useful stops are L’Hospitalet-près-l’Andorre, some 11 km from the border, and La Tour de Carol. On the Spanish side, the high-speed train reaches Lleida-Pirineus, where you continue by road. The train is a pleasant alternative if you combine it with a private vehicle for the last stretch.

How to plan the journey with peace of mind

  • Choose the flight first and the route second. A direct service at a good hour usually makes up for a few extra kilometres on the road.
  • Leave some margin on arrival. Storms can slow traffic on mountain roads. Avoid tight connections on the way home.
  • Check the traffic. Before leaving, look at mobilitat.ad and our guide to road conditions in Andorra.
  • If you hire a car, ask about winter equipment. Have the company confirm what the vehicle carries and whether it may be driven in Andorra.
  • Have your documents ready. Andorra is outside the European Union: keep your travel document to hand and check the requirements for your nationality.
  • Pack with care. If you are bringing skis, mention it when you book the transfer. For everything else, see our guide on what to pack for a ski trip.

What to expect when you reach Grau Roig

Grau Roig is, according to Grandvalira, the only sector of the resort without a residential centre, and you notice it as you arrive: the journey ends in the heart of the mountains, with the slopes in plain sight. Hotel Grau Roig, featured in the MICHELIN Guide, stands at the foot of the slopes, so once you are here you can forget about the car for the rest of your stay.

Grandvalira’s 2026-27 season is scheduled from 4 December 2026 to 4 April 2027, snow permitting. If you have not yet chosen your dates, our guide on when to ski in Grandvalira will help you decide, and you can then arrange flights and transfers in good time, particularly for Christmas and Carnival.
