Night skiing in Grandvalira: where to ski after dark from Grau Roig
Floodlit runs, a snowpark and guided outings once the ski area closes
What is night skiing in Grandvalira and why should you try it?
Night skiing in Grandvalira lets you stay on the snow after the rest of the ski area has closed. These are floodlit zones open to all resort visitors, with a very different atmosphere from the daytime. The light is soft, the pace drops and a run you know by heart feels entirely different.
The night-time offering is quite specific and worth understanding before you go. There is a blue run in Pas de la Casa and a floodlit snowpark at Bordes d’Envalira, between the Soldeu and Grau Roig sectors. In Grau Roig, home to Hotel Grau Roig, the night is mostly spent on a snowmobile, on snowshoes or on a dog sled. The hotel is listed in the MICHELIN Guide.
What you can do at night
- Ski on a piste: La Solana/Tubs, in Pas de la Casa.
- Ride freestyle: Sunset Park Peretol, at Bordes d’Envalira.
- Slide without skis: Snake Gliss, in Soldeu El Tarter, once the slopes have closed.
- Head out on an excursion: snowmobiles, snowshoes, mushing and trips in a snowcat.
Always check the timetable
Sources do not fully agree on days and times, which change with the season and the weather. Take the details in this article as a guide and confirm them on the Grandvalira website or on +376 891 800 before setting out.
The benefits of night skiing: a different experience on the snow
Skiing at night does not replace a full day in the ski area, but it adds something the day does not give you.
Extend your day
If you are only here for a few days, a night session gives you a few more hours on the snow after general closing. Day, multi-day, season and Plus+ passes have been valid for the night session, but not the pedestrian pass. Before you go, check current conditions in our guide to lift pass prices in Andorra.
An accessible level
The floodlit run in Pas de la Casa is blue, of low difficulty. You do not need to be an expert to enjoy it, as long as you can control your speed and braking.
A different feeling
The lighting changes the way you read the terrain and makes you ski with more attention. That is part of the appeal, and also the reason to take your first runs gently.
Options for non-skiers
Anyone who does not want to ski can still join in. Night outings by snowmobile, on snowshoes and by dog sled let you get out into the mountains without needing to know how to ski. You can combine them with dinner.
The best areas for night skiing in Grandvalira and Grau Roig
These are the night-time areas and activities covered by the sources consulted.
La Solana/Tubs run, in Pas de la Casa
This is the main night run. Visit Andorra gives its opening times as Thursday to Saturday, 17:00 to 20:00. According to Skiresort, it has 1.5 km of lit piste served by the La Solana chairlift. It is at around 2,100 metres and runs when the weather allows.
Sunset Park Peretol
A floodlit snowpark beside the Peretol drag lift, at Bordes d’Envalira, with jumps and features. Visit Andorra lists it as open from Tuesday to Sunday until 21:00. Skiresort gives 0.5 km of lighting and says it is not directly connected to the main ski area. It is the closest option to Grau Roig, but it is designed for freestyle.
Snowmobiles in Grau Roig
Visit Andorra places this activity in the Grau Roig sector, with night outings for two people lasting 30 or 60 minutes. RocRoi offers them with a dinner option and requires drivers to be 18. Find out more in our article on snowmobiling in Andorra.
Snowshoeing and mushing at night
RocRoi offers a two-hour night snowshoe outing at a gentle pace with dinner, from age 12. It also has mushing routes of 5 km, and of 10 km with dinner, in which children can take part from age 3 when accompanied. Read our guides to snowshoeing and mushing in Andorra. The hotel includes all three activities in its list of snow activities, so you can ask before booking.
Where to eat in the resort
Visit Andorra mentions 3 Estanys, Llac de Pessons, Vodka Bar and Braseria Piolets near the slopes. In Soldeu El Tarter, Arrosseria Pi del Migdia and Wine and Meat Bar by Jean Leon open in the evening. Another idea is our article on dinners in high mountain refuges.
Tips for making the most of your night skiing session
Choose where to stay carefully
Hotel Grau Roig is at the foot of the slopes in the Grau Roig sector, an advantage we explain in our article on ski-in ski-out. Pas de la Casa is a different sector, so work out how to get there and back before the afternoon fades.
Clothing and equipment
At night the temperature falls and visibility changes. Bring warm layers and goggles with a lens suited to low light. To help you pack, see our guide to what to bring on a ski trip.
Ski touring at night: the rules
If you plan to skin up outside these areas, remember that Law 21/2022 on mountain resorts sets clear conditions. You must wear a head torch of at least 300 lumens and reflective accessories, descend at a moderate speed and, if you come down a piste, keep to the side to respect the work of the piste machines. Times and any restrictions are set by the resort, so check them first.
Check the forecast
The night chairlift and the routes depend on the weather. RocRoi outings may change route, be postponed or be cancelled according to the snow. Always have a back-up plan.
Back to the spa
The hotel spa is open until 21:00, with a heated pool, a sauna and a Turkish bath, and access included for guests. It may fit better before an outing than after a long session.
How to book your night on the snow: a step-by-step guide
Step 1: decide what you want to do
Skiing on a piste, freestyle or a guided outing. Each option is organised in a different way.
Step 2: check the calendar
Find out which days have a night session during the week of your trip. According to Visit Andorra, the run opens from Thursday to Saturday and the snowpark from Tuesday to Sunday.
Step 3: confirm your lift pass
If you are going to ski, check that your pass covers the night session. You can ask at Grandvalira.
Step 4: book the guided activity
For snowmobiles, snowshoes and mushing, check availability with the hotel or directly with an operator such as RocRoi. Check the insurance too: RocRoi includes third-party liability, but accident cover is optional.
Step 5: book your dinner
If you are heading back to the hotel, there is La Vaquería, El Teatro del Vino, La Marmita, La Fromagerie and Secret Room. You can have a drink in the Copper Bar before or after.
Step 6: don’t forget the day
The night is a complement. The essence of your stay is still the ski area by day, with 215 km and 140 ski slopes in Grandvalira during the winter season.
