Here are 28 real things to do, for winter and summer alike, that you can combine with a stay at Hotel Grau Roig, right on the slopes of Grandvalira and listed in the MICHELIN Guide.
\n
1- Visit its Romanesque churches, such as Sant Climent de Pal or Sant Romà de les Bons. They have a unique charm.
\n
2- Feel like a child again on the Tobotronc, which the park promotes as the longest alpine coaster in the world: around 5.3 km of descent through La Rabassa forest in Sant Julià de Lòria. If the adrenaline allows, spend the rest of the day at Naturland.
\n
3- Head out on snowshoes. It is the calmest way into the mountains in winter, and you do not need to know how to ski.
\n
4- Try a snowmobile. Ask at the hotel: it is among the snow activities you can enquire about.
\n
5- Savour a good trinxat in a borda, one of the traditional mountain houses that are now restaurants.
\n
6- Discover Andorra’s history and its contrasts by visiting traditional houses turned into museums, such as Casa d’Areny-Plandolit (stately) and Casa Rull (humble and rural).
\n
7- Go shopping in Andorra la Vella. Remember there is tax here too: the general IGI rate is 4.5%.
\n
8- Visit the prettiest, greenest villages you can imagine, such as Pal, Bixessarri or Ordino. I recommend a drive that takes in several in the same day.
\n
9- Play courier for friends and family by bringing back tobacco, but carefully. If you are 17 or over and entering Spain, the limit is 300 cigarettes per person (a carton and a half). There are alternative allowances too: 150 cigarillos, 75 cigars or 400 g of smoking tobacco. If you go over, you must declare it at customs.
\n
10- Go home with perfume for the whole family. Before you buy, compare prices in several perfumeries.
\n
11- Find out that one of Andorra’s most charming villages shares its name with a Spanish biscuit brand: Fontaneda. Its church of Sant Miquel, from the eleventh and twelfth centuries, is listed as cultural heritage.
\n
12- Keep track of the Carmen Thyssen Museum, which has left Escaldes-Engordany and is moving to the Node building in Andorra la Vella. Check whether it has opened before you go.
\n
13- Visit the Museu del Tabac, in the former Reig factory in Sant Julià de Lòria, in operation from 1909 to 1957.
\n
14- Include the Margineda bridge on your route. It dates from the late fifteenth century, is 33 m long and over 9 m high, and crosses the Gran Valira.
\n
15- Forget your own name in the thermal waters of Caldea. A tip: try the outdoor area in the depths of winter, with cold air on your face and your body in hot water.
\n
16- Ride or ski the slopes of Grandvalira. Then, mid-morning, soak up the sun on a resort terrace with a beer in hand, a true classic.
\n
17- Marvel at the views Andorra offers from its via ferratas.
\n
18- Try Alpha beer, brewed at El Mas de Ribafeta in Arinsal.
\n
19- See the Cirque du Soleil show in Andorra la Vella in summer. In 2026 it was Ràdio Andorra, from 3 July to 2 August, and it is also confirmed for summer 2027.
\n
20- Ski Pal Arinsal and Ordino Arcalís as well as Grandvalira. Andorra has superb mountains to ski, and all three now belong to Grandvalira Resorts.
\n
21- Conquer Comapedrosa, at 2,942 m the highest peak in Andorra, and enjoy the views from the summit.
\n
22- Feel as if you were in Siberia for a day on a dog-sled outing. These animals can be incredibly fast.
\n
23- Lose yourself in the shops on Avinguda Meritxell, one of the best things to do in Andorra la Vella. But go easy, or you will have to buy an extra suitcase as well.
\n
24- Stroll beside lakes such as Engolasters or Pessons. The clear water and the smell of damp grass will make you feel you are in paradise. The Pessons route is rated difficult, so plan it properly.
\n
25- Follow the Iron Route in Ordino, opened in 2002 with sculptures by artists such as Carneiro, Khimoune and Brusse. It is good proof that Andorra is well worth a summer visit too.
\n
26- Ride the Funicamp gondola, around 6 km long, which links Encamp and Solanelles (2,502 m). Do not miss the views of Andorra’s peaks on the way up.
\n
27- Stretch your legs on the hiking trail through Sorteny Park or the Madriu-Perafita-Claror valley (whose name is nearly as long as the valley itself), a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2004.
\n
28- Spend the whole journey home thinking about your next visit and what you will do differently.
\n
If you come between November and April, the snow season rules: skiing, snowshoes, snowmobiles and sleds, with Caldea and the churches for the afternoons. If you come in summer, make the most of lakes, trails, viewpoints and the Cirque du Soleil.
\n
I have left out plenty of other ideas about what to see in Andorra, a natural setting that leaves many visitors spellbound. So here is my best advice: do not think twice, switch off your computer, pack your bags and come and see us.
\n","categories":[{"id":"425a3962-c27d-569c-ae7b-a85f0e6bb381","name":"Adventure","slug":"adventure","parentElement":null}],"acf":{"subtitle":"A list of 28 things you can do in Andorra","lead":"Things to do in Andorra: 28 ideas for winter and summer, from skiing in Grandvalira and Caldea spa to Romanesque churches, hikes and shopping.","featuredMedia":{"altText":"","sourceUrl":"https://admin.hotelgrauroig.com/content/uploads/2019/06/que-hacer-en-andorra-2019.jpg","localFile":{"childImageSharp":{"croppedSizes":{"aspectRatio":1.3274336283185841,"src":"/static/7e99e5a929ea90dabb4a590614082122/a3e80/que-hacer-en-andorra-2019.jpg","srcSet":"/static/7e99e5a929ea90dabb4a590614082122/f2477/que-hacer-en-andorra-2019.jpg 150w,\n/static/7e99e5a929ea90dabb4a590614082122/eb94d/que-hacer-en-andorra-2019.jpg 300w,\n/static/7e99e5a929ea90dabb4a590614082122/a3e80/que-hacer-en-andorra-2019.jpg 600w,\n/static/7e99e5a929ea90dabb4a590614082122/2f1e0/que-hacer-en-andorra-2019.jpg 900w,\n/static/7e99e5a929ea90dabb4a590614082122/1f384/que-hacer-en-andorra-2019.jpg 1200w","sizes":"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px"},"croppedSizesDuotone":{"aspectRatio":1.3274336283185841,"src":"/static/7e99e5a929ea90dabb4a590614082122/5c485/que-hacer-en-andorra-2019.jpg","srcSet":"/static/7e99e5a929ea90dabb4a590614082122/464df/que-hacer-en-andorra-2019.jpg 150w,\n/static/7e99e5a929ea90dabb4a590614082122/4f3d6/que-hacer-en-andorra-2019.jpg 300w,\n/static/7e99e5a929ea90dabb4a590614082122/5c485/que-hacer-en-andorra-2019.jpg 600w,\n/static/7e99e5a929ea90dabb4a590614082122/a6ba0/que-hacer-en-andorra-2019.jpg 900w,\n/static/7e99e5a929ea90dabb4a590614082122/d1600/que-hacer-en-andorra-2019.jpg 1200w","sizes":"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px"}}}},"isFeatured":"yes"}}},{"node":{"id":"5e371e3c-3f7d-50fc-8fb4-538ba57fd6d8","path":"/en/walking-excursions-and-hiking-routes-in-andorra/","title":"Walking excursions and hiking routes in Andorra","date":"24 September 2019","content":"
Andorra has trails for almost every level: flat strolls beside an irrigation channel, glacial lakes less than an hour from the car park, and summits above 2,700 metres. Here are nine routes sorted by difficulty, using the official Visit Andorra route sheets wherever they exist, so you can choose with the distance and ascent to hand.
\n
Before you set off, a word on the season: Visit Andorra recommends walking routes above 1,700 metres between late June and late September. If the weather and terrain allow, that window can stretch from May to October. Conditions change quickly in the high mountains, so bring suitable footwear and clothing.
\n
Easy walks
\n
If you are new to hiking, or you want a family route that children will love, start here. These are simple routes, although the time they take varies quite a lot from one to the next.
\n
\n
Rec del Solà (Andorra la Vella): its 5.13 kilometres have hardly any climb, about 3 metres, because the path follows an old irrigation channel. It starts near Sant Ermengol and passes the parish vegetable gardens and a picnic area with a viewpoint. Along the way, information panels explain how the valley changed through farming, urban growth and adapting to natural hazards. If you walk north along the channel, you reach the oratory of Sant Antoni de la Grella and the Romanesque bridge of Sant Antoni.
\n
Iron Route (Ordino): it links Llorts with La Cortinada in 4.24 kilometres one way, about 8.4 if you walk back, with 126 metres of ascent. It takes a little over two hours and suits families. The most striking feature is the series of modern iron sculptures that line the whole path, a reminder of the area’s mining and metalworking past. In summer you can visit the Llorts mine, 30 metres deep, and at the end you will find the church of Sant Martí de la Cortinada, with murals from the late 12th century. If this side of the country appeals, there is more in our guide to sacred art in Andorra.
\n
Camí del Gall (Canillo to Soldeu): this one covers 5.86 kilometres with 285 metres of ascent, from the Canillo cable car car park at 1,535 metres to the CG-2 road near Soldeu. The highest point is El Palinqueró, at 1,805 metres. Follow the red cockerel waymarks. Visit Andorra allows 3 to 6 hours and rates it as suitable for the whole family. The path runs close to the road and often meets it, so you can shorten the walk if you need to. To get back, a bus runs from Soldeu to Canillo every hour on the hour.
\n
\n
Moderate walks
\n
This is where things get interesting. Once you have tried one of the easy routes, you may well want a little more gradient. These three take you to the high-altitude lakes the country is famous for, just like the Pessons lakes, right next to the hotel.
\n
\n
Tristaina lakes (Ordino Arcalís): a 4.39-kilometre loop with around 210 metres of ascent that starts and ends at the La Coma car park, in the Ordino Arcalís ski area. The full circuit takes about three hours, and the first lake is roughly 40 minutes away, an easy stretch for children. You will see three lakes: the Primer, the Mig and the Més Amunt, which is the largest, at about 2,330 metres, and where swimming is allowed in summer. Near the start stands Arcalís 91, a steel ring by the sculptor Mauro Staccioli. In winter the cirque lies under snow and looks completely different.
\n
Incles valley and Juclar lake (Canillo): the route begins at kilometre 3 of the road into the Incles valley, past the Baladosa bridge, and climbs 465 metres over 4.57 kilometres to the second Juclar lake. Allow about 2 hours 10 minutes up and 1 hour 40 minutes down, on the same path. Juclar is the largest lake in Andorra, at 21.3 hectares, and the first lake is home to the Pyrenean newt, a species that needs very clean water. The Juclar refuge is staffed and serves meals in summer, so you can spend the night up there. Bear in mind that the valley road closes to traffic in summer, when access is by electric buggy.
\n
L’Estanyó lake (Ordino): this walk starts at the Canya de la Rabassa car park, at 1,783 metres, inside the Vall de Sorteny Nature Park, the largest protected area in the country according to Rutas Pirineos. It takes around an hour and a half to reach the lake, at about 2,340 metres. The park stands out for its range of plants and has a botanical garden with panels to help you identify them. Once you are up there, only one thing remains: to sit by the water and enjoy the views. If you carry on to the Pic de l’Estanyó, at 2,915 metres, the full route adds up to 11.72 kilometres and about 1,135 metres of ascent, and moves into the very difficult category.
\n
\n
Mountain routes for experienced walkers
\n
These hikes call for high-mountain experience and good fitness. Some sections have steep slopes or exposed passages, so avoid them if you suffer from vertigo or if there is still snow about. Are you up for it?
\n
\n
Montmalús peak and Colells cirque (Grau Roig): this is our home route. It leaves from the El Cubil car park in Grau Roig and makes a 10.4-kilometre loop with 875 metres of cumulative ascent and about four hours without stops, according to Rutas Pirineos. You pass the first Pessons lake and Coma Estremera lake, reach the summit at 2,781 metres and continue along airy ridges to the Portella de Joan Antoni. In good conditions there are no major technical difficulties, but you will need your hands at certain points. Afterwards, the spa at Hotel Grau Roig, which appears in the MICHELIN Guide, and dinner at La Vaquería or La Marmita are a good way to recover.
\n
Carroi peak (La Massana to Andorra la Vella): it has no especially tricky sections, but the climb is demanding and relentless. From Sispony it is about 7 kilometres with 900 metres of ascent, with some three hours up and one down according to the Visit Andorra snowshoe route sheet. At the top you get a sheer view down to the centre of Andorra la Vella and Escaldes-Engordany, and on the other side the wild country of the Enclar reserve.
\n
Casamanya peak (Ordino): its 2,740 metres may look daunting at first, although the official sheet rates it as moderate: 3.75 kilometres and 750 metres of ascent from the top of the Coll d’Ordino road. The opening climb to the Vaques pass is steep, and then you follow a waymarked path. From the summit you can see the Estanyó, the Serrera, Pic de Carroi and Comapedrosa, and with luck griffon and bearded vultures too.
\n
\n
Walking in the mountains in winter
\n
From November to April the snow takes over and these routes play by different rules: the summer terrain is only for people with the right training and equipment. The simplest alternative is snowshoeing, which the hotel lists among its snow activities, with outings to frozen lakes. You can also ask about mushing or ski mountaineering. And if you would like to come back in fine weather next year, our piece on Andorra’s glacial lakes has more ideas for planning your season.
\n","categories":[{"id":"425a3962-c27d-569c-ae7b-a85f0e6bb381","name":"Adventure","slug":"adventure","parentElement":null}],"acf":{"subtitle":"Nine routes sorted by difficulty, using the official route sheets.","lead":"Hiking routes in Andorra: easy, moderate and high-mountain walks, with the distance, ascent and time for each one.","featuredMedia":{"altText":"","sourceUrl":"https://admin.hotelgrauroig.com/content/uploads/2019/07/excursiones-a-pie-y-rutas-de-senderismo-por-andorra.jpg","localFile":{"childImageSharp":{"croppedSizes":{"aspectRatio":1.3274336283185841,"src":"/static/802b8298b181ef9653583c36d7a23777/0228f/excursiones-a-pie-y-rutas-de-senderismo-por-andorra.jpg","srcSet":"/static/802b8298b181ef9653583c36d7a23777/f2477/excursiones-a-pie-y-rutas-de-senderismo-por-andorra.jpg 150w,\n/static/802b8298b181ef9653583c36d7a23777/eb94d/excursiones-a-pie-y-rutas-de-senderismo-por-andorra.jpg 300w,\n/static/802b8298b181ef9653583c36d7a23777/0228f/excursiones-a-pie-y-rutas-de-senderismo-por-andorra.jpg 500w","sizes":"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px"},"croppedSizesDuotone":{"aspectRatio":1.3274336283185841,"src":"/static/802b8298b181ef9653583c36d7a23777/c1a42/excursiones-a-pie-y-rutas-de-senderismo-por-andorra.jpg","srcSet":"/static/802b8298b181ef9653583c36d7a23777/464df/excursiones-a-pie-y-rutas-de-senderismo-por-andorra.jpg 150w,\n/static/802b8298b181ef9653583c36d7a23777/4f3d6/excursiones-a-pie-y-rutas-de-senderismo-por-andorra.jpg 300w,\n/static/802b8298b181ef9653583c36d7a23777/c1a42/excursiones-a-pie-y-rutas-de-senderismo-por-andorra.jpg 500w","sizes":"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px"}}}},"isFeatured":"no"}}},{"node":{"id":"0821e31f-9208-5be7-bccc-6f2da4d122ef","path":"/en/wine-tourism-in-andorra/","title":"Wine tourism in Andorra","date":"24 September 2019","content":"
The luxury of being able to stay in a hotel with a wine cellar
\n
If you want to have the best wineries very near, the most comfortable option for you is staying in a hotel with a cellar. So you start to wonder which gourmet restaurants in Andorra are really worth a visit. This selection brings together six addresses we have checked against the 2026 guides: one in our own hotel, the country’s only Michelin star and four more highly recommended tables, from the mountains to the city.
\n
La Vaquería restaurant
\n
In one of the most naturally charming corners of Andorra you will find La Vaquería, one of the five dining spaces at Hotel Grau Roig, which is listed in the MICHELIN Guide. It stands out for its traditional Andorran cooking with local produce and a menu that changes with the season.
\n
Its speciality? Grilled meats, rice dishes and pasta, with vegetarian and coeliac-friendly options. It serves lunch only, so it is the perfect way to take a break if you are skiing. It is just a few steps from the slopes and has an outdoor terrace with views over Grandvalira and the Pessons cirque. It is best to book in advance, especially in winter, when it is at its busiest.
\n
Where is it? At Hotel Grau Roig, in the Grandvalira ski resort.
\n
Ibaya
\n
If you are looking for haute cuisine, this is the essential stop: Ibaya is the only restaurant in Andorra with a Michelin star in the 2026 guide. It is in the Sport Hotel Hermitage, with Francis Paniego (El Portal de Echaurren) leading the concept and Jordi Grau as resident chef.
\n
The cooking is creative and modern, with two tasting menus centred on Andorran gastronomy: “Un paseo por el valle de Incles” and “Un paseo por Andorra”. It lies within the Grandvalira ski area, so you can combine it with a day’s skiing in Soldeu. Book directly with the restaurant and check the opening days, as it does not open every day.
\n
Where is it? At Carretera General 2, Soldeu.
\n
Les Pardines 1819
\n
This is the most recent addition to Michelin’s recommended restaurants in Andorra. Les Pardines 1819 occupies a separate building within the boutique hotel of the same name, at around 1,600 metres above sea level and some five minutes from Grandvalira.
\n
Chef Oscar Villalba works with the idea of bringing a piece of the landscape to each plate. He offers an à la carte menu of traditional mountain cooking and a tasting menu, the latter by reservation only. It is a good choice if you want something special without leaving the mountain setting.
\n
Where is it? At Carretera dels Cortals d’Encamp, km 3, Encamp.
\n
Taverna Ángel Belmonte
\n
If you like good traditional food, make a note of this classic Andorra la Vella address. Gault&Millau includes it in its 2026 edition and describes it as a true country house with traditional touches, much appreciated by those who know the country well.
\n
On the menu you will find cep and foie gras ravioli, tagliatelle with prawns, croquettes, Andalusian-style fried squid, cod with ratatouille and traditional-style meatballs. It also has an excellent cellar of Spanish wines, so do not leave without asking for a recommendation.
\n
Where is it? At Carrer Ciutat de Consuegra, 3, Andorra la Vella.
\n
Celler d’en Toni
\n
One of the establishments listed in the 2026 MICHELIN Guide. Michelin explains that it has managed to move with the times without losing its original concept, striking a balance between tradition, creativity and flavour.
\n
The menu relies on good produce: local meats and fresh market fish. If it is your first visit, order the dish that made it famous: the Celler cannelloni. It is a very convenient option if you are spending the day shopping in the capital and fancy sitting down to a relaxed meal.
\n
Where is it? At Verge del Pilar, 4, Andorra la Vella.
\n
Beç
\n
We finish with another of the guide’s recommendations. Beç offers an updated take on traditional cooking in a contemporary space with plenty of wood, an open kitchen and a terrace.
\n
Its signature dishes include aged beef loin tartare and pigs’ trotters stuffed with Sant Carles prawns, along with seasonal options. It is about a two-minute walk from Caldea, so it fits very well with an afternoon at the spa.
\n
Where is it? At Copríncep François Mitterrand, 2, Escaldes-Engordany.
\n
More ideas for eating well in Andorra
\n
Michelin also recommends Koy Hermitage and Solineu Club Hermitage, both in the Soldeu area. If you would prefer something different, take a look at our guides to traditional borda restaurants, dinners in high-mountain refuges and wine tastings in Andorra. And if you are coming at the height of the ski season, remember to book ahead: in winter the best tables fill up quickly. Always check opening times on each restaurant’s website before you set off.
\n","categories":[{"id":"48f7502e-22d9-5007-b35c-6f32d09a043a","name":"Gastronomy","slug":"gastronomy","parentElement":null}],"acf":{"subtitle":"From the country's only Michelin star to the table at our hotel","lead":"Gourmet restaurants in Andorra: six addresses checked against the 2026 guides, from Ibaya, the only Michelin star, to La Vaquería.","featuredMedia":{"altText":"","sourceUrl":"https://admin.hotelgrauroig.com/content/uploads/2019/07/restaurantes-gastronomicos-andorra-hotel-grauroig.jpg","localFile":{"childImageSharp":{"croppedSizes":{"aspectRatio":1.3274336283185841,"src":"/static/e45196812cb679fb3c9b4a5e74278b02/a3e80/restaurantes-gastronomicos-andorra-hotel-grauroig.jpg","srcSet":"/static/e45196812cb679fb3c9b4a5e74278b02/f2477/restaurantes-gastronomicos-andorra-hotel-grauroig.jpg 150w,\n/static/e45196812cb679fb3c9b4a5e74278b02/eb94d/restaurantes-gastronomicos-andorra-hotel-grauroig.jpg 300w,\n/static/e45196812cb679fb3c9b4a5e74278b02/a3e80/restaurantes-gastronomicos-andorra-hotel-grauroig.jpg 600w,\n/static/e45196812cb679fb3c9b4a5e74278b02/2f1e0/restaurantes-gastronomicos-andorra-hotel-grauroig.jpg 900w","sizes":"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px"},"croppedSizesDuotone":{"aspectRatio":1.3274336283185841,"src":"/static/e45196812cb679fb3c9b4a5e74278b02/5c485/restaurantes-gastronomicos-andorra-hotel-grauroig.jpg","srcSet":"/static/e45196812cb679fb3c9b4a5e74278b02/464df/restaurantes-gastronomicos-andorra-hotel-grauroig.jpg 150w,\n/static/e45196812cb679fb3c9b4a5e74278b02/4f3d6/restaurantes-gastronomicos-andorra-hotel-grauroig.jpg 300w,\n/static/e45196812cb679fb3c9b4a5e74278b02/5c485/restaurantes-gastronomicos-andorra-hotel-grauroig.jpg 600w,\n/static/e45196812cb679fb3c9b4a5e74278b02/a6ba0/restaurantes-gastronomicos-andorra-hotel-grauroig.jpg 900w","sizes":"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px"}}}},"isFeatured":"no"}}},{"node":{"id":"e10f1252-c0cc-5026-9b48-f63a83a2a2f5","path":"/en/buy-tobacco-in-andorra-at-the-best-price/","title":"Buying tobacco in Andorra: prices, customs and shops","date":"24 September 2019","content":"
Why does tobacco cost less in Andorra?
\n
For decades, tobacco has been one of the purchases most closely associated with Andorra. The price difference with Spain remains, and many travellers take the opportunity to buy it during their stay.
\n
The reason is tax. Andorra does not charge Spain’s 21% VAT and its tobacco duties are lower, which translates into a lower price per packet. As a rough guide for 2026, the difference is about €2 a packet on a brand like Marlboro: around €3.50 in Andorra against around €5.50 in Spain. These are indicative prices and they vary by brand and shop, so check them before buying in larger quantities.
\n
How much tobacco can you take through customs?
\n
This is the point that causes the most confusion. The limit is not set by Andorra but by the country you are entering. Spain’s allowance for travellers over 17 is 300 cigarettes (a carton and a half), 150 cigarillos, 75 cigars or 400 g of rolling tobacco, according to the Spanish Tax Agency leaflet.
\n
Go over that amount and you risk having the goods seized and being fined. Current amounts and conditions are available from the Tax Agency itself. If you are travelling back through France, French rules apply, so look them up before you set off.
\n
Where to buy tobacco in Andorra
\n
You do not need to hunt for a dedicated tobacconist. Tobacco is sold in various kinds of shops in Andorra, and the greatest concentration of shops is along Avinguda Meritxell and Avinguda Carlemany, between Andorra la Vella and Escaldes-Engordany. Two specialists:
\n
Les 1000 Pipes
\n
A specialist shop for pipes, tobacco and smokers’ accessories. Its website, les1000pipes.com, is the best place to browse the catalogue and available brands, and to confirm where to find it before you go.
\n
The Cigar Shop
\n
Aimed at cigar lovers, with cigars and related products. You will find it at Avinguda Meritxell 40, in Andorra la Vella.
\n
Stock varies, so it is worth phoning or checking the shop’s website before making the trip.
\n
Are there e-cigarette and vape shops in Andorra?
\n
Yes. The vaping community has grown a great deal in recent years and these products are sold in Andorra too, mainly in specialist shops, where you will find devices, coils, batteries and liquids. Compare prices before you buy and, if you will be taking them through customs, check what your destination country allows.
\n
Shopping and snow: fitting it into your trip
\n
Winter, from November to April, is Andorra’s high season. If you are coming to ski on the Grandvalira slopes, a good plan is to set aside an afternoon or a day away from the slopes for a trip down to the shopping area. Bear in mind that weekends and public holidays bring more traffic at the border and on the main roads.
\n
Tobacco is only part of what people buy here. You can also buy perfume or take a look at Andorra’s pharmacies. The limits for everything else are also in the Tax Agency leaflet. And if history appeals, tobacco has a curious past here: the trail of the smugglers.
\n","categories":[{"id":"12c3557f-5b76-5cad-bb23-886b73c7ed94","name":"Shopping","slug":"shopping","parentElement":null}],"acf":{"subtitle":"Indicative prices, customs allowance and specialist shops","lead":"Buying tobacco in Andorra: what it costs, how much you can take through Spanish customs and where to find specialist shops.","featuredMedia":{"altText":"","sourceUrl":"https://admin.hotelgrauroig.com/content/uploads/2019/07/comprar-tabaco-andorra.jpg","localFile":{"childImageSharp":{"croppedSizes":{"aspectRatio":1.3274336283185841,"src":"/static/bdce23730d5929e91f5012006e9b81a9/a3e80/comprar-tabaco-andorra.jpg","srcSet":"/static/bdce23730d5929e91f5012006e9b81a9/f2477/comprar-tabaco-andorra.jpg 150w,\n/static/bdce23730d5929e91f5012006e9b81a9/eb94d/comprar-tabaco-andorra.jpg 300w,\n/static/bdce23730d5929e91f5012006e9b81a9/a3e80/comprar-tabaco-andorra.jpg 600w","sizes":"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px"},"croppedSizesDuotone":{"aspectRatio":1.3274336283185841,"src":"/static/bdce23730d5929e91f5012006e9b81a9/5c485/comprar-tabaco-andorra.jpg","srcSet":"/static/bdce23730d5929e91f5012006e9b81a9/464df/comprar-tabaco-andorra.jpg 150w,\n/static/bdce23730d5929e91f5012006e9b81a9/4f3d6/comprar-tabaco-andorra.jpg 300w,\n/static/bdce23730d5929e91f5012006e9b81a9/5c485/comprar-tabaco-andorra.jpg 600w","sizes":"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px"}}}},"isFeatured":"no"}}},{"node":{"id":"b882e5dc-a23e-526c-945d-faafddfc7131","path":"/en/go-shopping-in-andorra/","title":"Shopping in Andorra: where to go, sales and customs limits","date":"24 September 2019","content":"
Whether or not you enjoy shopping, Andorra packs a huge range of shops into very few kilometres, which is why almost everyone who visits ends up spending an afternoon browsing them. It helps to know where to go, when to go and what you can take home without declaring it.
\n
What to buy in Andorra
\n
Do not be misled by the size of the country. Most of its shops are in Andorra la Vella and Escaldes-Engordany, linked by the retail corridor Visit Andorra calls The Shopping Mile: a kilometre and a half of shopping streets, partly pedestrianised, along Avinguda Meritxell, Bulevard Fener, Vivand and Avinguda Carlemany.
\n
The items visitors look for most include:
\n
\n
Cosmetics, perfume and pharmacy products.
\n
Technology and electronics.
\n
Tobacco and alcohol.
\n
Clothing and accessories.
\n
Sports gear and clothing, especially for skiing and the mountains.
\n
Prescription glasses and sunglasses.
\n
Jewellery and watches.
\n
\n
Department stores
\n
Shopping centres and department stores bring plenty of shops together under one roof, and several have restaurants or cafés, so you can stop for lunch and carry on afterwards. These are some of the best known:
\n
1. Carrefour Andorra 2000. A hypermarket in Andorra la Vella, at Avinguda de Tarragona 26. It is the place for a large shop for food and everyday products before heading home.
\n
2. Pyrénées. On Avinguda Meritxell in Andorra la Vella, right in the shopping district. It brings together fashion, cosmetics and electronics, and has a dining area where you can take a break. It is a good starting point if you want to make several purchases in one place.
\n
3. Illa Carlemany. This centre in Escaldes-Engordany has four floors and more than 70 shops, along with restaurants, cafés, a supermarket, a gym and both indoor and outdoor parking. It is also home to Cinemes Illa, so it is a good way to extend an afternoon when the weather is not on your side.
\n
If you are heading down towards Spain, keep Sant Julià de Lòria in mind: according to Visit Andorra, it is the parish with the most shopping centres in the country. You will also find plenty of shops specialising in cycling there.
\n
High street shops
\n
If what you really enjoy is wandering the streets, Andorra has plenty to offer. In Andorra la Vella, Avinguda Meritxell is the main shopping artery, with fashion, jewellery, perfume, electronics and large stores. Right beside it, Bulevard Fener adds shoe shops, fashion, accessories, sports and homeware, and it has its own walk of plaques dedicated to people linked to Andorra, the Bulevard de les Estrelles.
\n
The historic centre of Andorra la Vella moves at a different pace: narrow streets and small family businesses, some with more than 60 years behind them. Close by, Riberaygua i Travesseres mixes clothing, accessories, perfume, homeware and cafés. And if you need gear for your car or motorbike, head for Santa Coloma.
\n
In Escaldes-Engordany, Avinguda Carlemany continues the shopping corridor, with perfume, jewellery and watches among its specialities. If this interests you, you can combine it with the Perfume Museum, on the same avenue.
\n
Another major shopping hub is Pas de la Casa, a mountain town in the parish of Encamp with shopping centres, perfume shops and sports stores. As for the smaller towns, in Encamp, Canillo, La Massana and Ordino you will find local shops and much of the sports retail close to the ski resorts.
\n
In winter, the high season at Grau Roig, the plan makes itself: if you are staying at Hotel Grau Roig, listed in the MICHELIN Guide, Pas de la Casa is in the same Grandvalira ski area, and an afternoon off the slopes is a good moment to buy gear or head down to Andorra la Vella.
\n
Sales season
\n
Andorran sales tend to start a few days before those in Spain and France. According to the Andorra la Vella tourist office, there are two main periods to make the most of the discounts:
\n
\n
In winter: from late December to late February, in some cases running into March.
\n
In summer: from late June to late August.
\n
\n
Another useful detail is shop opening hours. As a rule, shops stay open until 8 pm from Sunday to Thursday and until 9 pm on Fridays and Saturdays, though hours can vary from one shop to another, especially on Sundays. At peak periods such as Christmas and Easter, some stay open until 9 or 10 pm.
\n
Shops close on 1 January, 14 March (Constitution Day, unless it falls on a weekend), 8 September (Our Lady of Meritxell) and 25 December.
\n
Customs in Andorra
\n
The borders with Spain and France are open 24 hours a day, all year round, but there are limits on what you can take with you without declaring it. Allowances are individual and cannot be pooled between travellers. Alternatively, 150 cigarillos, 75 cigars or 400 g of pipe tobacco.
\n
Alcohol (over-17s only): 1.5 litres of drinks over 22% ABV, or 3 litres under 22% or sparkling, and 5 litres of table wine.
\n
Perfume: 75 g, plus 375 ml of eau de cologne.
\n
Coffee and tea: 1 kg of coffee and 200 g of tea.
\n
\n
Before you travel, check the current figures on the Andorran customs website or in the Spanish Tax Agency leaflet, and keep your receipts.
\n","categories":[{"id":"12c3557f-5b76-5cad-bb23-886b73c7ed94","name":"Shopping","slug":"shopping","parentElement":null}],"acf":{"subtitle":"Where to shop, when to go and what you can take home","lead":"Shopping in Andorra: the best shopping areas, centres, sales seasons, opening hours and customs limits for your trip.","featuredMedia":{"altText":"","sourceUrl":"https://admin.hotelgrauroig.com/content/uploads/2019/07/donde-comprar-andorra-centro-comercial.jpg","localFile":{"childImageSharp":{"croppedSizes":{"aspectRatio":1.3274336283185841,"src":"/static/4768f8650f4fde1f5706413bc7dd3481/a3e80/donde-comprar-andorra-centro-comercial.jpg","srcSet":"/static/4768f8650f4fde1f5706413bc7dd3481/f2477/donde-comprar-andorra-centro-comercial.jpg 150w,\n/static/4768f8650f4fde1f5706413bc7dd3481/eb94d/donde-comprar-andorra-centro-comercial.jpg 300w,\n/static/4768f8650f4fde1f5706413bc7dd3481/a3e80/donde-comprar-andorra-centro-comercial.jpg 600w","sizes":"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px"},"croppedSizesDuotone":{"aspectRatio":1.3274336283185841,"src":"/static/4768f8650f4fde1f5706413bc7dd3481/5c485/donde-comprar-andorra-centro-comercial.jpg","srcSet":"/static/4768f8650f4fde1f5706413bc7dd3481/464df/donde-comprar-andorra-centro-comercial.jpg 150w,\n/static/4768f8650f4fde1f5706413bc7dd3481/4f3d6/donde-comprar-andorra-centro-comercial.jpg 300w,\n/static/4768f8650f4fde1f5706413bc7dd3481/5c485/donde-comprar-andorra-centro-comercial.jpg 600w","sizes":"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px"}}}},"isFeatured":"no"}}},{"node":{"id":"b74bfcbb-7d0a-57f6-a476-25ab0b705b8b","path":"/en/everything-you-need-to-know-to-buy-perfume-in-andorra/","title":"Buying Perfume in Andorra: Everything You Need to Know","date":"23 September 2019","content":"
If you plan to buy perfume in Andorra on your next visit, there are three things worth knowing before you choose: what lies behind the price, where the best selection is, and how much you can take back through customs without any trouble. Here is what you need to get organised, whether you are coming for the day or making the most of a week’s skiing.
\n
A more favourable tax regime
\n
The price gap with Spain comes down mainly to tax. Andorra charges IGI (its General Indirect Tax), with a general rate of 4.5%, whereas Spain’s general rate of VAT is 21%. That difference is why perfume and high-end cosmetics are among the most popular purchases for people visiting the Principality.
\n
The actual difference is not a fixed figure. It depends on the brand, the size, the shop and whether there are promotions or sales on at the time. So we suggest two simple precautions: check the price of the fragrance you are looking for beforehand and, once in the shop, confirm the final amount. That way you can make a considered choice.
\n
A very wide selection
\n
One of the things that strikes visitors most about Andorra is how many shops it has for such a small country. Perfumeries are no exception: you will find them on the main avenues, in shopping centres and in pharmacies too, which put a lot of emphasis on skincare. If that interests you, take a look at our guide to shopping in Andorra’s pharmacies.
\n
With so much choice, the most practical approach is to compare the same product in two or three places before making up your mind. Most of the shops are close to one another, so it will not take you long.
\n
When is the best time of year to buy perfume in Andorra?
\n
You can buy perfume all year round, but some periods are busier than others. The Andorran Government sets the sales calendar together with the trade associations: the 2026 summer sales ran from 19 June to 30 August. Taking part is voluntary for each business, so do not assume that every shop or every brand will be discounted.
\n
The Shop in Andorra Festival takes place in autumn, and Black Friday discounts arrive in November. The winter sales and the dates of each event change from year to year, so it is best to confirm them in the Visit Andorra shopping calendar before you book.
\n
The best areas to buy perfume
\n
The country’s main shopping artery is a single stretch of street with two names. It begins in Andorra la Vella and carries on into Escaldes-Engordany, and it is the best starting point for any perfume-shopping route.
\n
\n
Shops in Andorra la Vella: Avinguda Meritxell is the heart of the shopping scene. This is home to the Pyrénées department store, along with perfumeries such as Gala, in the La Rotonda building, and Primor.
\n
Shops in Escaldes-Engordany: Avinguda Carlemany continues the shopping district. If you would rather have everything under one roof, the Illa Carlemany shopping centre brings together more than 70 shops over four floors, with restaurants, a supermarket and parking. And if fragrance is a passion of yours, you will enjoy the Perfume Museum in Escaldes-Engordany.
\n
Shops in Encamp: the shopping here leans more towards snow gear, especially near the Funicamp, although you will also find other kinds of shop in the centre.
\n
Shops in La Massana: this is not the leading area for shopping. It makes more sense to buy here if you are already in the parish than to make a special trip.
\n
Shops in Sant Julià de Lòria: this is the parish closest to the Spanish border, which makes it a convenient stop on the way home if there is still something left on your list.
\n
\n
For a broader overview, see our guide to shopping in Andorra.
\n
Andorra’s main perfumeries
\n
If you know exactly what you are after and want to devote the day to perfume, these names are a good place to start: Júlia, Gala, Primor and the perfumery at the Pyrénées department store. Shops do change, so check the address before setting off.
\n
As for opening hours, there is no single timetable and each business sets its own. As a guide, Primor on Avinguda Meritxell opens from 9.30 am to 9 pm Monday to Saturday and from 9.30 am to 8 pm on Sundays, while Primor on Avinguda Carlemany opens from 9 am until 8.30 pm or 9 pm Monday to Saturday, with no Sunday hours published. Many smaller shops keep shorter hours and some close at midday, so it is worth checking with the shop you have in mind.
\n
You should also bear in mind public holidays. These dates may affect opening hours:
\n
\n
25 December: Christmas Day
\n
1 January: New Year’s Day
\n
14 March: Constitution Day
\n
8 September: Our Lady of Meritxell
\n
\n
Closures are not always uniform. In 2026, for example, the Government allowed shops to open voluntarily on 14 March because of tourist demand, and each business decided for itself. If your visit coincides with one of these days, check beforehand.
\n
How much perfume you can take to Spain
\n
This is the detail most travellers overlook. According to the Spanish Tax Agency’s leaflet for travellers from Andorra, the limits per person aged 17 or over are 75 g of perfume and 37.5 cl of eau de toilette. For other goods, the maximum value is €900 per person, or €450 for under-15s. These are the limits that apply when entering Spain. If you are returning via France, check the rules with French customs.
\n
Shopping here is not only a question of price, and the checks are real. In July 2026, the Spanish Tax Agency reported the seizure of 77 perfumes, valued at €9,515, at the La Farga de Moles customs post. Keep your receipts and, if you go over the allowance, declare what you are carrying. The same goes for other typical purchases, as you can see in our article on buying tobacco in Andorra.
\n
Buying perfume in winter, between ski days
\n
Andorra’s peak season is the snow season, from November to April, and shopping fits in very well with it. A rest day between days on the slopes is a good moment to head down to Andorra la Vella or Escaldes-Engordany, stroll along Meritxell and Carlemany and take in the Christmas markets if you are here in December. The Santa Llúcia Fair, for instance, is held from 13 December in Encamp, Ordino and Sant Julià de Lòria.
\n
If you are skiing in the Grau Roig sector, Pas de la Casa is also close by, where Primor on Carrer Major opens from 9 am to 8 pm Monday to Saturday and from 9 am to 7 pm on Sundays. Before getting in the car, check the state of the roads on Mobilitat. The country brings together granite, limestone and slate walls at very different altitudes, as well as climbing walls for those just starting out.
\n
Andorra and its incredible rocky mountains
\n
Andorra is mountain country from end to end, with snow in winter and routes that open up in summer. The rock varies as much as the altitude: you can climb below 1,200 metres near the capital or at almost 2,800 metres in the Pessons cirque. If you are not used to exercising at altitude, take it easy for the first few days.
\n
Visit Andorra puts the ideal conditions between March and September, although some lower areas can also be climbed in winter. Whether you are after natural rock or an artificial wall, there are options here for you.
\n
Where to go climbing
\n
Most areas are in the centre and south of the country, around Andorra la Vella, Escaldes-Engordany and La Massana. These are the best known.
\n
Climbing routes
\n
1. Pirámide: located between Santa Coloma and Sant Julià de Lòria, and reached by following a path with yellow markings. It is a granite wall of around 150 metres, at an altitude of 1,200 metres, with medium to high difficulty: not suitable if you suffer from vertigo. Thanks to its location, you can climb here in both winter and summer.
\n
2. Solà d’Enclar: one of the areas with the most walls in the country, with four sectors: Cementiri, Bigabloc, Esfinx and Santa Coloma. You get there from the same road between Santa Coloma and Sant Julià de Lòria, turning off along the cemetery track. The difficulty is medium to high, so go well equipped and always with other climbers or an instructor.
\n
3. Pic de Ribuls: at 2,780 metres, in the Grau Roig sector of Grandvalira, within the Pessons cirque. It is high mountain granite, with 4 routes graded from 5 to 6a. The approach starts at the Cubil car park and climbs to the refuge at the first Pessons lake; from there you walk around the lake and take the path on the left. Because of the exposure and altitude, temperatures are mild even in summer. If you want to combine it with a walk, see our guide to the Pessons lakes.
\n
This is the closest wall to Hotel Grau Roig, which is surrounded by mountains, with the slopes close at hand, and features in the MICHELIN Guide. After the day’s climbing you can recover in the spa and dine in its restaurants, such as La Vaquería or La Marmita.
\n
4. Sant Antoni de la Grella: located between Escaldes-Engordany and La Massana, at 1,150 metres, above the Camí Ral. It has 18 routes graded from 5 to 7c and faces east. Access is simple: take the CG3 towards La Massana and park by the bridge after the first tunnel. The path passes the Sant Antoni bridge, one of Andorra’s historic bridges.
\n
5. Encodina sector: 13 routes graded from 4+ to 6c+, at 1,850 metres and facing north-east, on limestone-schist rock. It lies 2.5 km before Ordino Arcalís and is recommended in spring and summer.
\n
Climbing walls
\n
If you are just starting out, a climbing wall is safer and lets you build confidence before moving on to rock. These are the ones listed in the country’s tourist information; check opening times and prices before you go.
\n
Ordino climbing wall. A carved concrete outdoor wall, facing south, at the Centre Esportiu d’Ordino. It has routes for children and adults, and it is free and open all year round.
\n
Canillo climbing wall. Outdoor, with an admission charge. According to Visit Andorra, it offers packages with equipment and even an instructor if you need one.
\n
Pas de la Casa and Encamp climbing walls. These are linked to sports centres, so you can combine them with other sports. The one in Pas de la Casa is indoors, a good solution if the weather turns. Also in the Encamp area you will find Cortals d’Aventura, outdoors and close to the Funicamp.
\n
Caldea. Tourist guides include an indoor climbing wall next to Caldea, in Escaldes-Engordany. Check availability before you count on it.
\n
Climbing in winter
\n
Winter is ski season and the high walls are out of the question, but you do not have to stop climbing. Lower areas such as Pirámide can be climbed if the weather is kind, and the indoor walls stay open. The rest of the time, make the most of the Grandvalira ski slopes.
\n
Before you set off
\n
Bring your own equipment, check the condition of the routes and do not go alone. In the high mountains the weather changes fast, so start early and keep an eye on the forecast. The feeling of reaching the top with your own hands and feet makes up for any early start.
\n","categories":[{"id":"425a3962-c27d-569c-ae7b-a85f0e6bb381","name":"Adventure","slug":"adventure","parentElement":null}],"acf":{"subtitle":"Granite and limestone walls, from 1,150 to
