From here you are close to some of the country’s best-known high-mountain hiking routes.
\n
After the walk, you can relax in the hotel spa and have dinner at one of its dining venues: La Vaquería, El Teatro del Vino, La Marmita, La Fromagerie or Secret Room.
\n
What you need to know before setting off
\n
These are the facts worth knowing so you can choose well:
\n
\n
The largest lake: the first of the Juclar lakes, at 21 hectares.
\n
The most accessible: Visit Andorra gives this title to Engolasters, in Escaldes-Engordany.
\n
Swimming: it is prohibited at Engolasters. At Tristaina it is allowed in the largest lake during the summer.
\n
Season: above 1,700 metres, the recommended time to go is from late June to late September.
\n
\n
Other ways to see the lakes
\n
The hotel lists helicopter flights, hiking, horse riding and picnics among its summer activities, options you can ask about for your dates. A flight gives you a different perspective on the glacial cirques, although the best way to understand these landscapes is still to walk them.
\n
What are glacial lakes and how did they form in Andorra?
\n
Glacial lakes are bodies of water created by the action of ancient glaciers. In Andorra they are surrounded by mountains and form part of the landscapes that draw so many nature lovers. Hotel Grau Roig, in the Andorran Pyrenees, is a good base for discovering them. You can see the hotel’s listing in the MICHELIN Guide.
\n
They owe their existence to the movement of glaciers which, thousands of years ago, carved out the Andorran terrain. As the glaciers retreated, they left hollows in the ground that filled with meltwater. That is why many lakes appear in a chain within the same cirque, at different heights, as at Pessons or Tristaina.
\n
A richness that goes beyond the water
\n
These settings are home to mountain wildlife worth taking the time to observe. The Pyrenean newt lives in the first Juclar lake. On the way up to the Pessons lakes you may well hear marmots. At Tristaina you will see free-roaming Percheron horses, as well as the steel sculpture Arcalís 91, by Mauro Staccioli.
\n
\n
Respect the access rules: the Incles Valley road is closed to vehicles in summer, and access to the Coma del Forat is also restricted.
\n
Picnic responsibly: carry your rubbish back with you and do not go into the water where it is prohibited.
\n
Keep your eyes open: the flora and fauna are part of the outing, so there is no need to rush.
\n
\n
A reserve of water and energy
\n
Not all the lakes are simply part of the scenery. Engolasters, for example, stores water and houses the sluice gates for the FEDA hydroelectric plant. Its dam, built in 1934, is 178 metres long and has the highest spillway in the country. This is why swimming is strictly prohibited.
\n
A list of the best glacial lakes to visit in Andorra
\n
Andorra is home to some of the most impressive lakes in the Pyrenees. This selection is based on Visit Andorra’s route sheets, with the practical details you need for each one.
\n
Pessons lakes
\n
This is one of the most visited groups in Andorra and the closest to the hotel. The lakes form a circle in wild, rocky terrain. You pass Estany Primer, Rodó, Meligar, Les Fonts and Cap dels Pessons before reaching the pass, from where you can see them all. There is more information in our article on the Pessons lakes.
\n
Tristaina lakes
\n
These are three lakes above 2,300 metres: Primer, del Mig and Més Amunt. Access is via the Coma d’Arcalís, in Ordino, at the other end of the country, so it is best to set aside a full day for them. The first lake is about 40 minutes from the car park and is suitable for children.
\n
Juclar lakes
\n
The first of the Juclar lakes, at 21 hectares, is the largest in Andorra. You get there by climbing up from the Incles Valley, and next to the lakes is the Juclar hut, staffed in summer and serving meals.
\n
Lake Engolasters
\n
It lies in Escaldes-Engordany and covers 7 hectares. It is the only large lake in Andorra below 2,000 metres and the most accessible of all. The area has Romanesque churches such as Sant Miquel d’Engolasters, so you can combine a walk with some culture. It also gives access to the Madriu Valley.
\n
Estany de les Truites
\n
It lies in the Comapedrosa Nature Park, next to the staffed hut of the same name, which offers accommodation and meals in summer. It is a good option for anyone looking for a long day in the mountains in the north-west of the country.
\n
Estany de la Nou
\n
It is in the Madriu-Perafita-Claror Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visit Andorra describes the route as rather demanding, and points out that the water is less cold because it is fed by groundwater.
\n
Popular hiking routes to discover Andorra’s lakes
\n
If you enjoy walking, the lakes are one of the finest objectives for a day in the Andorran mountains. Before choosing, compare distance, ascent and official difficulty, as they vary a good deal from one route to another.
\n
Before and after the route
\n
Start the day with a good breakfast and set off early, especially in summer. On your return, the hotel spa is the best place to rest your legs, and dinner at La Marmita or La Vaquería rounds off the day nicely.
\n
Nearby and best-known routes
\n
These figures come from Visit Andorra’s official route sheets:
\n
\n
Estanys de Pessons route: rated as difficult. It covers 5.95 km with 707 m of ascent and takes between 3 and 6 hours from the El Cubil car park. At Estany Primer you will find the Llacs dels Pessons hut restaurant.
\n
Estany de Juclar route: moderate difficulty. It is 4.57 km each way with 465 m of ascent, taking about 2 hours 10 minutes up and 1 hour 40 down. It starts at kilometre 3 of the Incles road, and in summer the Incles Valley is reached by electric buggy.
\n
Estanys de Tristaina route: moderate difficulty, suitable for walkers of all levels. It is a circular route of 4.39 km with 210 m of ascent, about 3 hours. It starts from the Coma car park in Ordino Arcalís.
\n
Llac d’Engolasters route: easy. It starts in Encamp, opposite the National Automobile Museum, with about 2 km and 1 hour 15 minutes each way, according to its route sheet.
\n
\n
If you want to keep walking
\n
The route to Montmalús also leaves from the El Cubil car park, covering 5.36 km with 604 m of ascent and a pass at 2,704 metres. And if you are looking for a multi-stage trek, La Volta als Estanys is a circular route between Andorra and France linking lakes and huts.
\n
Tips for visiting Andorra’s glacial lakes: what to bring and when to go
\n
Andorra’s lakes are in the high mountains, and that affects both your kit and your dates. Prepare properly for the outing even if the route looks short.
\n
Basic kit for the glacial lakes
\n
The weather changes quickly at altitude, so check the forecast before each outing. This is what you should not be without:
\n
\n
Mountain clothing: in layers, with an extra warm layer and a waterproof.
\n
Hiking footwear: comfortable, sturdy trekking boots or shoes for uneven ground such as the granite screes at Pessons.
\n
Rucksack: with enough water, food, nuts and a basic first aid kit.
\n
Sunglasses: with UV protection for sunny days at altitude.
\n
Map or GPS: the routes are usually signposted, but Visit Andorra offers GPX tracks for many of them and it pays to have one downloaded.
\n
\n
The best time of year
\n
The best months run from late June to late September, when the weather is milder and the paths are clear. If weather and terrain allow, the season can extend from May to October. The rest of the year, especially above 1,700 metres, routes may be wholly or partly covered in ice or snow.
\n
And in winter?
\n
Winter is the peak season at Grau Roig, although the high-mountain lakes lie under the snow and can no longer be hiked. Instead, you have the Grandvalira slopes and their 55 km of snowshoe trails. The hotel lists snowshoeing, snowmobiling and mushing among its snow activities, options you can ask about depending on conditions. And if you fancy some culture, take the chance to explore Andorra’s picturesque villages.
\n","categories":[{"id":"0e8c2633-22cd-52a4-8bfe-e028a5ba997f","name":"Culture","slug":"culture","parentElement":null},{"id":"425a3962-c27d-569c-ae7b-a85f0e6bb381","name":"Adventure","slug":"adventure","parentElement":null}],"acf":{"subtitle":"A guide to choosing a route, preparing your outing and picking the right season.","lead":"Glacial lakes in Andorra: Pessons, Tristaina, Juclar and Engolasters, with distance, ascent and difficulty for each route and the best time to go.","featuredMedia":null,"isFeatured":"no"}}},{"node":{"id":"d2ce3bca-6529-5500-9637-cf3cf831ddba","path":"/en/escaldes-engordany-jazz-festival/","title":"Escaldes-Engordany International Jazz Festival: a guide","date":"02 November 2026","content":"
What the Escaldes-Engordany International Jazz Festival is
\n
The Escaldes-Engordany International Jazz Festival is Andorra’s big jazz event. It takes place every summer in this parish, which also organises it, and it mixes international names with free concerts in the street. If you enjoy jazz and want to combine it with a few days in the mountains, you can stay at Hotel Grau Roig, which appears in the MICHELIN Guide, and head down to Escaldes for the concerts.
\n
From 1985 to today
\n
The festival began in 1985, founded by a group of young people from the parish. Over almost two decades, Escaldes welcomed names such as Miles Davis, Ray Charles, B.B. King, George Benson, Pat Metheny, Dianne Reeves, Michel Camilo, Paquito D’Rivera and Joshua Redman. The last edition of that first era was in 2004. A long break followed, until the festival was revived in 2022.
\n
Since then, audiences have grown. The 2026 edition, the 42nd, drew 6,400 people: 6.7% more than in 2025 and 44% more than in 2022, according to figures published in the Andorran press after the festival.
\n
Why it is worth going
\n
There are two strong reasons. The first is scale: the main concerts take place at the Sala Prat del Roure, with an average of just over 500 people per concert in 2026, so you see leading artists up close. The second is that a good part of the programme is free and happens right out in the street, which means you can discover the festival without buying a single ticket.
\n
Dates and programme of the Escaldes-Engordany Jazz Festival
\n
The festival takes place in early July and lasts about a week. The last three editions have fallen on very similar dates: 4 to 11 July in 2024, 3 to 10 July in 2025 and 2 to 9 July in 2026. Dates and line-up change every year, so check the official festival listing before planning your trip.
\n
The 2026 line-up
\n
To give you an idea of the standard, this was the programme for the 42nd edition:
\n
\n
Nils Landgren Funk Unit, who opened the programme on 2 July.
\n
Joshua Redman Quartet, on 3 July. Redman had already played the festival during its first era.
\n
Paquito D’Rivera with Anat Cohen, on 4 July. He had been announced alongside Chucho Valdés, but Valdés fell ill and Cohen took his place with her American band.
\n
Sixun and Lizz Wright, on 5 July, in a Sunday double bill.
\n
Maria Schneider with the Clasijazz Orchestra and Antonio Lizana, in a free concert.
\n
Porgy & Bess Pirinenca, an Andorran reinterpretation of Gershwin’s work, as the closing event on 9 July.
\n
\n
Émile Londonien Trio and Pol Omedes & Strings also played. Paquito D’Rivera, Maria Schneider and Porgy & Bess all sold out, which is worth bearing in mind if you have your heart set on a particular concert.
\n
Recent editions
\n
Earlier line-ups help you understand what to expect. In 2025 the performers included Erik Truffaz, Marcus Miller, Cécile McLorin Salvant and the duo of Michel Camilo and Tomatito. In 2024, the 40th edition, Richard Galliano, Kyle Eastwood, Andrea Motis and Toquinho all appeared. In other words, jazz in the broad sense, with room for funk, tango, flamenco and Brazilian music.
\n
Festival venues and activities
\n
The festival has several strands, and each one works differently. It helps to know them so you can put together your own programme.
\n
Jazz at the Sala Prat del Roure
\n
The Sala Prat del Roure hosts the main ticketed concerts. In 2025 they began at 9 pm, and at 8 pm on the Sunday, although times can vary from one edition to the next. In 2026, the five ticketed concerts brought in a total of 2,613 people.
\n
Jazz al Carrer
\n
Plaça Coprínceps becomes the festival’s free stage. Jazz al Carrer features local and international groups, chosen in 2026 by the Andorran musician Kic Barroc, and needs no booking. It is the most open part of the festival and the one that fills the parish with atmosphere: in 2026 it drew 2,140 people.
\n
Andorra Jams
\n
If you like a late night, the jam sessions are for you. They take place after the main concerts at the Sala Prat del Roure itself, with Kic Barroc and his quartet plus guest musicians. In 2026, 604 people came along.
\n
Més Jazz, cinema and more
\n
The Més Jazz series extends the programme over the final days, with 831 people attending in 2026. That year also saw the first film series, with two documentaries: The Sax Life, about Paquito D’Rivera, and Köln 75, about Keith Jarrett’s famous concert. For 2027, the organisers want to bring back an educational concert for children, like those of the early years.
\n
How to get there and where to stay during the festival
\n
Getting to Escaldes-Engordany
\n
The venues are concentrated in the centre of the parish. Plaça Coprínceps is right next to Caldea, and the Sala Prat del Roure is about a five-minute walk from the thermal centre, so once you are there you can get between concerts on foot.
\n
From Grau Roig you will need to drive down to Escaldes-Engordany. Keep this in mind when planning: concerts finish late and the way back is on a mountain road.
\n
Staying at Hotel Grau Roig
\n
Hotel Grau Roig is in the Grandvalira ski area, in the Grau Roig sector, with 42 rooms across the Auténtica, Superior, Romántica, Junior Suite and Suite Deluxe categories. It suits anyone who prefers to sleep in the mountains and spend the day doing something else before heading down to the concert.
\n
In the morning and afternoon you have the hotel spa, free for guests, and several places to eat: La Vaquería, El Teatro del Vino, La Marmita, La Fromagerie and Secret Room, along with the Copper Bar and the Summer Lounge. The wine cellar holds more than 300 labels.
\n
What to do during the rest of the day
\n
July is a good time for the mountains. The summer activities listed on the hotel’s website include hiking, climbing, via ferrata, horse riding, helicopter flights, rafting, golf and 4×4 and quad routes, all subject to confirmation with the hotel. You could start with these hiking routes in Andorra.
\n
If you would rather stay in Escaldes before the concert, take the chance to visit the church of Sant Pere Màrtir, the Escaldes-Engordany Art Centre or Avinguda Carlemany, a good place to go shopping.
\n
Tips for making the most of the festival
\n
Buy your tickets early
\n
Several concerts sold out in 2026, and pass sales reached their highest figure since the festival’s revival, with 199 sold. Tickets are sold online, on the parish website (e-e.ad), and at sales points such as the Illa Carlemany information point and the Tourist Office.
\n
Consider the pass
\n
Prices vary every year. In 2026, individual tickets started at €25 and the five-concert pass cost €65, with a discount for Carnet Jove holders. If you are going to several concerts, it normally pays for itself.
\n
Book your accommodation early
\n
The festival coincides with the summer season in Andorra, so it is best to confirm your stay once the line-up is out and you have decided which nights you want to head down to Escaldes.
\n
Do not miss the free programme
\n
Even if you have a ticket for the concert hall, set aside an evening for Plaça Coprínceps. Jazz al Carrer concerts usually take place before the main ones, so you can enjoy both without rushing.
\n
If you come to Andorra in winter
\n
The festival belongs to July, but winter is the high season in Grau Roig. The hotel is ten metres from the Grandvalira lifts, so you can start skiing almost from the door and, on a rest day, still head down to Escaldes to visit Caldea and see the art centre. As for the jazz, make a note of next July’s dates.
\n","categories":[{"id":"0e8c2633-22cd-52a4-8bfe-e028a5ba997f","name":"Culture","slug":"culture","parentElement":null},{"id":"425a3962-c27d-569c-ae7b-a85f0e6bb381","name":"Adventure","slug":"adventure","parentElement":null}],"acf":{"subtitle":"Leading artists and free concerts every July","lead":"Escaldes-Engordany International Jazz Festival: history, line-up, venues and tips for enjoying this July classic in Andorra.","featuredMedia":null,"isFeatured":"no"}}},{"node":{"id":"9951ff8c-9e34-5c83-8e52-76bfe29dadf1","path":"/en/pal-arinsal-vallnord/","title":"Pal Arinsal (formerly Vallnord), a destination worth discovering","date":"02 November 2026","content":"
If so, this article is for you, because I am going to tell you what you can do at the former Vallnord, known today as Pal Arinsal. It has two sectors, Pal and Arinsal, both in the parish of La Massana, linked by a gondola since 2001. It has plenty to offer in both winter and summer, and it suits groups of friends and families with children alike.
\n
And if you are staying at Hotel Grau Roig, which appears in the MICHELIN Guide, you have Grandvalira on the doorstep and can set aside a day for an outing to the other side of the country.
\n
In winter
\n
Its slopes add up to 63 km of skiable terrain and 707 hectares, between 1,550 and 2,560 metres above sea level. The Grandvalira Resorts dossier for the 2025-26 season counts 48 runs across the two sectors, for all levels.
\n
There are three key lifts for getting up the mountain: the La Massana gondola, which leaves from the town centre at about 1,825 m and climbs to about 2,500 m in six-seater cabins; the Arinsal gondola; and the Josep Serra chairlift. If you plan to travel by bus between the parishes and the slopes, check routes and times before you set off.
\n
The ski season normally runs from December to April. Check the lift timetable on the official website, as it changes with the date and the snow conditions.
\n
Before you go, it helps to know what you will find:
\n
\n
Ski school. For different ages and levels, with lessons you can book in advance.
\n
Hire shops and ski storage. The resort offers ski hire, ski lockers and a Click & Collect service, so there is no need to carry your equipment around.
\n
Restaurants, cafés and terraces. The resort has 22 places to eat, including bars, cafés and restaurants, plus an après-ski scene.
\n
Areas for younger children. Ask at the resort about the children’s areas and the services available for each age group.
\n
Activities for non-skiers. Such as snowmobile routes, snowshoeing or a gondola ride with a pedestrian pass.
\n
\n
As for ski passes, there are several options, and the good news is that the system is shared by all three resorts:
\n
\n
Andorra Pass. Unlimited access to Grandvalira, Pal Arinsal and Ordino Arcalís, with up to 308 km of slopes. In the 2026-27 pre-sale it cost €885 for non-residents.
\n
Nord Pass. Unlimited access to Pal Arinsal and Ordino Arcalís, plus up to four days at Grandvalira for non-residents. In the same pre-sale it cost between €634.60 and €668.
\n
Day and multi-day passes. Multi-day passes can be combined with Ordino Arcalís and Grandvalira. Check the price for your dates on the official website.
\n
\n
The figures above are for the early-bird sale, which ended on 30 June; a different rate has applied since then. Conditions also vary according to age and place of residence, so treat them as a guide. If you are comparing resorts, our ski slopes in Andorra explains what Grandvalira is like.
\n
In summer
\n
This is when the resort takes on a different character. The slopes you skied down in winter become mountain bike trails, and the Pal Bike Park is the main reason to come.
\n
The resort cites more than 60 km of trails for all levels, from June to October, and in 2026 its main attractions opened on 20 June. Dates vary from year to year, so confirm them before you travel.
\n
Here is what you can expect to find:
\n
\n
Downhill trails, some of them approved for the World Cup, plus enduro and cross-country.
\n
Family routes such as the blue-graded Blavet, which opened in 2026.
\n
Bike World, an area designed for children.
\n
Lifts for taking your bike up, such as the La Massana gondola and the Serra and Cubil chairlifts.
\n
A bike school with private and group lessons, and bike hire.
\n
Mountain Park, with zip lines and high-rope circuits.
\n
\n
It is competition territory too: Pal Arinsal hosted the 2024 UCI Mountain Bike World Championships, and the World Cup returned from 9 to 12 July 2026. Between one valley and the next you will find stone villages, Romanesque churches and cobbled streets that you can explore on a short break. If you are staying at Hotel Grau Roig, in the Grau Roig sector in the parish of Encamp, you have a mountain base from which to plan these outings. You can see the hotel’s listing in the MICHELIN Guide.
\n
A base to come back to and rest
\n
After a day spent exploring villages, it is good to have the hotel spa and excellent dining close at hand. The dining options include La Vaquería, El Teatro del Vino, La Marmita, La Fromagerie and Secret Room, as well as Copper Bar and Summer Lounge.
\n
How to plan your routes
\n
The most practical approach is to get around by car and group the villages by valley. Encamp and Canillo are in the Valira d’Orient valley, the same one you take up to Grau Roig. Ordino and its hamlets follow the Valira del Nord, while Pal and Sispony belong to La Massana. Fontaneda, in the south, is in Sant Julià de Lòria. Give each area a day or half a day and don’t try to see everything at once.
\n
Useful tips for exploring Andorra’s villages
\n
These villages are small and best seen on foot, so wear comfortable shoes, especially if you will be walking on cobbles or joining a footpath. These ideas will help you get the most from your visit:
\n
\n
Check opening times before you go: several churches and museums open only on certain dates. Visit Andorra refers visitors to museus.ad or reservesmuseus@govern.ad to confirm church visits.
\n
Combine culture and walking: many of these villages are also the starting point for mountain routes. If you fancy walking further, see our selection of hiking routes in Andorra.
\n
Try local produce: Sispony is home to the chocolate maker Xocland and El Pastador jams, and in Ransol you can visit Cal Jordi, a cured meat producer offering tastings.
\n
\n
Activities to round off your break
\n
If you would like to see the valleys in a different way, the hotel lists options such as 4×4 trips, helicopter flights, horse riding and picnics among its summer activities, which you can ask about for your dates. And if the religious heritage of these villages interests you, there is more detail in our guide to Romanesque churches.
\n
Recommended routes: Andorran villages you shouldn’t miss
\n
These are the villages Visit Andorra highlights for their charm and for what you can do there, in both summer and winter.
\n
Ordino valley: Ordino, La Cortinada and Llorts
\n
\n
Ordino: visit the Casa d’Areny-Plandolit Museum, a 17th-century house that belonged to an influential local family and shows how people lived at the time. You can read its story in our article on Casa d’Areny-Plandolit. The village also has the church of Sant Corneli and Sant Cebrià, with five Baroque altarpieces.
\n
La Cortinada: the Romanesque church of Sant Martí preserves murals from the late 12th century and, next to it, Cal Pal brings together a manor house dating back to 1347, a cultural space and a mill and sawmill from the late 16th century.
\n
Llorts: stone houses, wrought-iron balconies and the church of Sant Serni. Its old centre is listed as a site of cultural interest. Nearby is the Llorts mine, with a 30-metre section open to visitors in summer.
\n
\n
You can link them on foot along the Camí Ral d’Ordino, an easy route of around 6 km from Santa Bàrbara to Llorts. It passes through Ansalonga, La Cortinada and Arans, and along the way you will come across the Homes de Ferro sculptures.
\n
La Massana: Pal and Sispony
\n
\n
Pal: at over 1,500 metres, it retains the look of a mountain village with stone, wood and slate. The church of Sant Climent, from the late 11th and early 12th centuries, has a three-storey bell tower. Children will enjoy the Menairons Forest, a route designed with them in mind.
\n
Sispony: one of the quarters of La Massana, with Casa Rull, the church of Sant Joan and a group of cortals with cobbled lanes.
\n
\n
Canillo and Encamp
\n
\n
Canillo: it has a cobbled old town and, very close by, the church of Sant Joan de Caselles, from the 11th and 12th centuries, with its bell tower separate from the nave. For the best views, go up to the Roc de Quer viewpoint.
\n
Ransol: in the Canillo valley, with medieval houses in its old quarter and the church of Sant Jaume.
\n
Encamp: its old centre brings together buildings from the 16th and 17th centuries and the Rossell and Cotxa dovecotes. Sant Romà de les Bons is very close, and in the village you can visit the Casa Cristo Ethnographic Museum.
\n
\n
The south: Fontaneda, Auvinyà and Santa Coloma
\n
\n
Fontaneda: in Sant Julià de Lòria, with fewer than 150 inhabitants and a stage finish of the Vuelta a España. The church of Sant Miquel preserves remains of paintings by the Master of Anyós and an altar carved from a single piece of stone.
\n
Auvinyà: a traffic-free hamlet that recreates a medieval village, with cobbled lanes and stone houses with wooden balconies. Further up is the chapel of Sant Romà d’Auvinyà.
\n
Santa Coloma: its church has a circular bell tower almost 18 metres high and video mapping in the apse that projects the original murals. Opposite, at Espai Columba, you can see the frescoes.
\n
\n
Points of interest at each stop: what to see in Andorra’s villages
\n
As well as the villages, there are a few places worth a detour. Some are close to Grau Roig and others fit in well if you are already in the area.
\n
Points of interest near Grau Roig
\n
\n
Pessons lakes: this is not a village but a mountain route that starts from the El Cubil car park, in the Grau Roig sector itself. It covers 5.95 km with 707 m of ascent and Visit Andorra rates it as difficult. To round off the day with some nature, read our guide to the Pessons lakes.
\n
Sanctuary of Meritxell: in Canillo, this is Andorra’s most important religious building and home to the country’s patron saint, celebrated on 8 September. The present sanctuary opened in 1976 to a design by Ricardo Bofill, after the fire of 1972, and in 2014 it was given the title of minor basilica.
\n
\n
More stops along the way
\n
\n
Torre dels Russos: a granite tower at the end of the old town of Santa Coloma, listed as a heritage building in 2004.
\n
Encamp’s museums: as well as Casa Cristo, the village has a Museum of Sacred Art and an Automobile Museum with one of the largest vehicle collections in southern Europe.
\n
Miniature Museum: if you are in Ordino, take the opportunity to visit the Miniature Museum.
\n
\n
The best time to visit Andorra’s villages
\n
Andorra’s villages can be visited all year round, although each season offers something different. These are the main differences.
\n
Spring: nature wakes up
\n
With the thaw, the valleys fill with water and greenery. It is a good time to stroll around villages like Ordino or Llorts, always checking path conditions if you want to climb higher.
\n
Summer: outdoor activities
\n
This is the season when the Llorts mine opens and when mountain routes are at their most accessible: for routes above 1,700 metres, Visit Andorra recommends going from late June to late September. It is also the time for the villages Visit Andorra groups in its summer selection, such as Pal, Llorts, Fontaneda and Sispony.
\n
Autumn: a display of colour
\n
The forests change colour and temperatures drop. If you enjoy photography, you can pick up ideas from our photography routes around Andorra and combine them with a stop in a village. Sispony or Pal are good options.
\n
Winter: snow season
\n
Winter is the peak season at Grau Roig, with access to the Grandvalira slopes, which total 215 km. You can alternate ski days with an outing to the villages: at this time of year Visit Andorra suggests the old town of Canillo, with the ice rink at its Palau de Gel, the walk around Encamp, La Cortinada, Pal and Santa Coloma. Many of their churches and museums are also a good option for a day of bad weather.
\n","categories":[{"id":"0e8c2633-22cd-52a4-8bfe-e028a5ba997f","name":"Culture","slug":"culture","parentElement":null},{"id":"425a3962-c27d-569c-ae7b-a85f0e6bb381","name":"Adventure","slug":"adventure","parentElement":null}],"acf":{"subtitle":"Romanesque churches, cobbled streets and valleys you can explore on a short break.","lead":"Villages of Andorra with charm: routes through Ordino, Llorts, Pal, Canillo and Fontaneda, what to see in each and when to go through the year.","featuredMedia":null,"isFeatured":"no"}}},{"node":{"id":"6459dd01-972e-5cab-bdfd-c45c5a8f14f5","path":"/en/private-jet-andorra/","title":"Private jet to Andorra: how to reach Grau Roig in style","date":"02 November 2026","content":"
Why choose a private jet to travel to Andorra?
\n
A private jet lets you pick your departure time and cuts the waiting, which is welcome when you are heading to a country with no airport of its own. One thing needs clearing up from the start: there is no direct flight to Andorra. You land in Spain or France and finish the journey by road. With that understood, the plan works very well, especially in the ski season, when every hour you do not spend in the car is an hour on the snow. Your final destination is Hotel Grau Roig, in the Grau Roig sector of Grandvalira, which appears in the MICHELIN Guide.
\n
What awaits you at Hotel Grau Roig
\n
\n
Spa: heated pool, hot tub, sauna, Turkish bath and relaxation area, plus a fitness room with Technogym machines.
\n
Food and drink: La Vaquería, El Teatro del Vino, La Marmita, La Fromagerie and Secret Room, along with Copper Bar and Summer Lounge. The rest depends on choosing the right place to land.
\n
Andorra has no airport of its own: where to land
\n
The nearest airport is Andorra-La Seu d’Urgell and, despite the name, it is not in Andorra. It sits in Montferrer i Castellbò, in Catalonia, about 12 km from the border. It is owned by the Catalan government and run by Aeroports de Catalunya. From there it is about 27 km by road to Andorra la Vella, roughly half an hour, and then you still have the climb up to Grau Roig.
\n
Your options, by distance to Andorra
\n
\n
Andorra-La Seu d’Urgell: 27 km.
\n
Lleida: about 150 km.
\n
Carcassonne: about 176 km.
\n
Toulouse: about 195 km.
\n
Barcelona-El Prat: about 200 km, around two and a half hours by car without stops.
\n
Reus: about 240 km.
\n
Girona: about 260 km.
\n
\n
These are approximate figures from the Ordino Arcalís and Pal Arinsal guides, measured to Andorra rather than to the hotel.
\n
The limits of the La Seu runway
\n
This is the point that decides your flight. According to the ENAIRE AIP, runway 03/21 measures 1,267 x 28 m, the largest aircraft allowed is the ATR42, there are no customs or immigration services, and commercial operations need prior permission 24 hours in advance. In other words, not every jet can operate there, and a flight from outside the Schengen area will have to deal with those formalities some other way. Your operator should check this against the latest AIP amendment before anything is finalised.
\n
The airport is growing: it ended 2025 with 19,160 passengers, with pilot routes to Madrid and Palma running through 2026.
\n
What about the airport next to Grau Roig?
\n
You may have read about it. In 2021 the Andorran Chamber of Commerce presented a study for an airport on the Pla d’Envalira, with an 1,800 m runway. At the time it was only a proposal, so do not count on it when planning your trip.
\n
The last stretch by helicopter
\n
The resort guides mention heliports in La Massana, Arinsal and Escaldes-Engordany. If that option appeals, raise it with your operator. Once you are here, the hotel lists a helicopter flight among its activities, and you will find more ideas in our helicopter routes over the Pyrenees.
\n
The benefits of flying by private jet to Grau Roig
\n
Beyond the comfort on board, what you really gain is time and flexibility.
\n
A timetable that suits you
\n
You leave when it suits you, within the opening hours of the airport you choose. That can make all the difference on a short ski break, if you want to make the most of the first afternoon.
\n
Less time on the road
\n
If your aircraft can operate at La Seu, the drive shrinks to about 27 km to Andorra la Vella, compared with the 200 km from Barcelona. If you need a longer runway, compare Lleida, Toulouse and Barcelona according to where you are flying from and the snow forecast.
\n
A straightforward arrival
\n
The hotel has a 24-hour reception, valet parking and electric car charging, according to its MICHELIN Guide listing. Let the hotel know your estimated arrival time, particularly if you land late or it is snowing.
\n
A high-mountain setting
\n
You are right in Grandvalira, close to the Port d’Envalira. In winter the snow sets the pace; in summer, the Grau Roig car park is the starting point for the Pessons lakes.
\n
Booking a private jet to Andorra: step by step
\n
1. Choose your arrival airport
\n
Start with what limits you: aircraft size, where you are flying from and your dates. With that information, your operator can tell you whether La Seu is viable or whether another airport on the list makes more sense.
\n
2. Compare companies
\n
Ask for several quotes and find out which aircraft they propose, whether they have operated at your chosen airport before and what happens if the weather forces a diversion. In the Pyrenees in winter, that last question matters.
\n
3. Fit the flight to your plans
\n
If you are bringing skis or golf clubs, say so when you book: sports equipment affects the choice of aircraft and of the car afterwards.
\n
4. Confirm the permissions
\n
Go through the runway permissions and the customs and immigration formalities with your operator. Keep your documents to hand, because you will enter Andorra by road from Spain or France.
\n
5. Finalise the road transfer
\n
Book the chauffeur-driven car or hire car before you fly. In winter, check the snow equipment and road conditions. If you would rather drive yourself, take a look at our guide to driving Andorra’s mountain passes.
\n
6. Plan your stay
\n
Book the activities and the table you most want well in advance. Allow more time if you are coming at Christmas or on a winter long weekend.
\n
Tips for making the most of your private jet trip to Andorra
\n
Check the forecast before you leave
\n
The weather changes quickly in the mountains. Check the forecast for the airport and for the road up, and allow some leeway in your schedule on the days you arrive and depart.
\n
Book a table from the outset
\n
Decide in advance where you want to dine on your first night. The hotel’s restaurants range from La Marmita to El Teatro del Vino, and Copper Bar is a good way to round off the day.
\n
Keep the first afternoon for the spa
\n
After the journey, a session in the sauna, Turkish bath and heated pool helps you settle in. The spa page has the menu of treatments and massages.
\n
Decide how to divide up your days
\n
In winter, book lessons or your ski pass in good time. In summer, combine a hiking route with an activity to ask about, such as the gourmet picnic by 4×4 featured on the hotel’s website.
\n
Choose the right room
\n
If you are travelling as a couple, the Romántica room or a Suite Deluxe may suit you better. If you are coming with your family, ask about the Junior Suite and the Kids Club, available in the winter season from 14:00 to 22:00.
\n","categories":[{"id":"01807db2-6c8f-5641-a80b-77b94f7ec34e","name":"luxury","slug":"luxury","parentElement":null}],"acf":{"subtitle":"Where to land, what limits the La Seu runway imposes and how to finish the journey to the hotel","lead":"Private jet to Andorra: where to land, the limits of the La Seu runway, the road transfer and what to do once you reach Grau Roig.","featuredMedia":null,"isFeatured":"no"}}},{"node":{"id":"3fb331b0-d5db-5898-87ef-3feb05139341","path":"/en/ransol-valley-andorra/","title":"Ransol Valley, Andorra: unspoilt nature near Grau Roig","date":"02 November 2026","content":"
Discover the Ransol Valley: a natural gem near Grau Roig
\n
The Ransol Valley is a glacial valley in the parish of Canillo, climbing from the village of the same name up to the French border. If you would rather go with a guide, the hotel includes hiking among its mountain activities, so do ask.
\n
Road cycling
\n
The road along the valley floor is well known among cyclists: around 4.5 km at an average gradient of 6.2%, according to Sotheby’s Andorra.
\n
More options in the area
\n
The hotel also lists other summer activities in Andorra, such as climbing, via ferrata, horse riding and 4×4 routes. These are general options rather than specific to this valley, so check availability with the hotel. For other walks, see our guide to hiking routes in Andorra.
\n
Nearby attractions: what to see in Canillo and the surrounding area
\n
The Ransol Valley belongs to Canillo, a parish with more than enough heritage to fill out the day. These are the places worth a stop.
\n
Meritxell Sanctuary
\n
The basilica sanctuary of Andorra’s patron saint and one of the country’s most important monuments. Meritxell Day is held here every year, with religious, artistic and official events.
\n
Sant Joan de Caselles
\n
A 12th-century Romanesque church. If this heritage interests you, see our guide to Romanesque churches in Andorra.
\n
Roc del Quer and the Tibetan bridge
\n
Roc del Quer is a viewpoint with impressive scenery. From here you can cross the Canillo Tibetan bridge, 603 metres long and 1 metre wide, at up to 158 metres above the ground. For more views, there is also the viewpoints route.
\n
Palau de Gel
\n
Andorra’s Ice Palace is in Canillo, next to the Grandvalira resort. It is an alternative worth bearing in mind when you would rather stay indoors.
\n
How to get to the Ransol Valley: a full guide from Grau Roig
\n
The most direct way is by car. Leave the hotel on the CG-2 towards Canillo, passing through Soldeu and El Tarter.
\n
\n
At the roundabout between El Tarter and L’Aldosa, take the Ransol road, the CS-260.
\n
Go through the village of Ransol and carry on along the Coma de Ransol road.
\n
The road ends at kilometre 5, in the Coma de Ransol area, where there is a small car park.
\n
\n
The Coma de Ransol picnic area
\n
At the end of the road, at around 1,950 metres, is the Coma de Ransol picnic area. It has four barbecues, four fixed tables and a drinking fountain, with a small river alongside. It is also the start of the routes to the Jan refuge, the Collada de Jan and Pic de Mil Menut. Visit Andorra recommends checking conditions in the area beforehand with the Canillo tourist office, on (+376) 753 600 or at vdc@canillo.ad. In case of an incident, call 112.
\n
Tips for enjoying nature in the Ransol Valley
\n
When to go
\n
Visit Andorra advises climbing La Serrera between late June and late September. Depending on the weather and ground conditions, the season can run from May to October. Rutas Pirineos recommends it from late spring to autumn, as long as there is no snow.
\n
Navigation and waymarking
\n
The circular route is marked with yellow dots up to the summit, but in the Meners cirque there is only the occasional cairn. On the way down you follow the GRP as far as the Coms de Jan refuge, and from there the yellow dots return. Take a map: the route description cites the Andorra 1:40,000 map from Editorial Alpina.
\n
Refuges along the way
\n
There are two places of shelter on the route: the Meners hut and the Coms de Jan refuge.
\n
What to do in winter
\n
In the snow season, the valley’s high routes fall outside the recommended dates. The main attraction lies on the Grandvalira slopes, whose El Tarter sector lies directly opposite Ransol. The hotel also lists snowshoeing, mushing, snowmobiling and ski touring, with guides and instructors. Check availability before you go.
\n
Back at the hotel
\n
After your walk, the hotel spa has a heated pool, a sauna and a Turkish bath, with free entry for guests. For dinner you can choose between La Vaquería, El Teatro del Vino, La Marmita, La Fromagerie and Secret Room. It is a fairly recent building, yet it says a lot about the parish: its architecture, the importance the textile trade once had here and the work of two sculptors with a strong presence in the area, Josep Viladomat and Sergi Mas.
\n
Neo-Romanesque architecture in granite
\n
The church dates from 1956 and was designed by the architect Josep Danés, who conceived it as a building dedicated to the pelaires, the local wool workers. The dedication makes sense: the textile sector was of great importance in this parish.
\n
A single glance is enough to take in its neo-Romanesque style, defined by the bell tower and by the granite that clads the whole building. The tower holds three bells, María, Anna and Jacoba, blessed by Bishop Martí in 1981.
\n
What to see on the façade and inside
\n
The façade is the first thing that catches your eye. It is decorated with ceramics and prints devoted to the Beatitudes, the work of the sculptor Sergi Mas.
\n
On the same façade you will see an Immaculate Conception by Josep Viladomat. Inside are the Pietà, also by Viladomat, and the main altarpiece. That altarpiece is thought to have been made with the collaboration of the Confraternity of Wool Workers and Weavers, further evidence of how much weight this guild carried.
\n
Where to find the church of Sant Pere Màrtir
\n
Unlike other outings in Andorra, this one does not require moving the car once you are in Escaldes-Engordany: you can get there on foot. The church is listed on Avinguda Carlemany, one of the parish’s main streets. If you have any questions about visiting times, ask at the Escaldes-Engordany Tourist Office.
\n
Nearby you will find another sculpture by Viladomat, the Puntaire, as well as examples of traditional Andorran architecture such as the La Tosca and Engordany bridges.
\n
If Viladomat has caught your interest, carry on along the same avenue to the Escaldes-Engordany Art Centre, at number 30. It houses the Viladomat Museum, the scale models of Romanesque art and an exhibition room, and entry is free.
\n
A plan for a day off the slopes
\n
Winter is the high season in Grau Roig, and this visit fits nicely into a rest day away from the pistes. Don’t expect display cases or grand halls: this is a narrow three-storey home, built in the late 18th century, which keeps its original layout and much of what it held. It shows something the postcards of Andorra leave out, namely how the country’s poorest people lived little more than a century ago.
\n
Encamp and Hotel Grau Roig share a parish and a postcode, AD200. That makes this visit an easy fit for a mountain stay, especially on a day off the slopes or when the weather turns. This one does the opposite. According to Visit Andorra, it was home to a family of landless day labourers. Everything revolves around a hearth where they gathered, in very little space.
\n
\n
It is a genuine house, not a reconstruction: it keeps its original layout and features.
\n
You go round it with a guide, and the tour draws on stories about the family.
\n
Tours are given in Catalan, Spanish, French and English.
\n
\n
A visit that fits your stay
\n
The museum is small and numbers are limited, so it is worth booking. It welcomes individuals and groups of all ages. The house also runs special tours and events on set dates during the year, so ask what is on during your trip.
\n
History and origins of the Casa Cristo Ethnographic Museum
\n
Official information from Museus d’Andorra dates the building to the late 18th century. What you see today mostly belongs to a later period: the life of a humble family between the end of the 19th century and the start of the 20th.
\n
The key date is 1947. That year its last residents left for France and the house stopped being a permanent home. Official sources differ on one detail: some speak of tenants, others of owners who kept it as a second home.
\n
The next important date is 1995, when the Comú d’Encamp, the parish council, bought and restored it. It opened as an ethnographic museum in 2000. The renovation kept its layout and most significant features, which is why it still feels like a house that has only just been left behind. Today it is listed as part of Andorra’s cultural heritage.
\n
Why it is so narrow
\n
The shape of the house comes down to one simple limit: the plot was small. To gain space, it was built upwards, with a ground floor and two storeys above. That choice shapes the whole visit, because every room had a clear purpose and nothing was spare.
\n
The main attractions of the Casa Cristo Ethnographic Museum
\n
The best of Casa Cristo lies in the small things: ordinary objects that show how daily life was managed. These are the ones the official sources mention.
\n
The slab sink
\n
A sink cut from a single slab of stone. In a house without luxuries, a piece like this says a lot about how local materials were put to use.
\n
The secret drawer
\n
The family used it to hide their money. Having so little, and hiding it with such care, sums up the household’s finances rather well.
\n
The century-old christening gown
\n
It is kept in a cupboard with the white linen. More than a hundred years old, it is a reminder of the weight religion carried in the family’s life.
\n
The fireplace and the upstairs room
\n
The fireplace was where the family gathered, and it is where guides tend to tell their stories. On the top floor is the room used for social occasions and celebrations, kept for special days. The cellar or pantry and the store for farm tools complete the spaces listed in the official description.
\n
Secrets and curiosities of the Casa Cristo Ethnographic Museum
\n
The account published on Mainly Museums adds details from a real visit, which may vary with the guide and the day.
\n
\n
Ground floor: part workshop, part pantry and part shelter for the family’s few animals, with winter clogs and buckets for carrying water.
\n
Upper floors: a kitchen and dining room, a sitting room, bedrooms and a loft for drying fruit.
\n
Bedrooms: plain woollen clothing, religious objects and charcoal warmers for the sheets.
\n
Household recycling: soaps made from animal fat, leather flasks and containers made from reused tins.
\n
Pine cone liqueur: the account says the guide talked about this homemade drink but would not reveal the recipe.
\n
\n
Three houses to compare
\n
Casa Cristo is part of the Rural Habitat Circuit, which shows how life changed according to each family’s standing. Casa d’Areny-Plandolit in Ordino shows the opposite extreme: a high-society family involved in politics and owning one of the country’s leading ironworks. Casa Rull, in Sispony, was home to the Perich family, farmers with land of their own, with large rooms upstairs and a ground floor given over to farm work. Seen one after another, the differences need no explaining.
\n
Encamp beyond the museum
\n
You can pair Casa Cristo with other visits in the same parish:
\n
\n
Church of Santa Eulàlia: Romanesque in origin, with a 23-metre bell tower, next to the Sacred Art Museum. If you can’t make it, or would like a look beforehand, there is a virtual tour of the house through Google.
\n
Accessibility
\n
The house is not adapted for people with reduced mobility. It has steep wooden stairs and low beams, so bear this in mind if you are travelling with someone who has difficulty getting around.
\n
What to do in winter
\n
Winter is the high season in Grau Roig, and the museum stays open from Tuesday to Saturday. You could set aside a morning for Casa Cristo and spend the afternoon in the snow, since the Funicamp gondola runs from Encamp up to the Grandvalira slopes. It also works the other way round, as a plan for a rest day between sessions of skiing or snowshoeing.
\n
Back at the hotel
\n
Afterwards, the hotel spa has a heated pool, a sauna and a Turkish bath, with free entry for guests. For dinner, the hotel has La Vaquería, El Teatro del Vino, La Marmita, La Fromagerie and Secret Room. Mills turned cereals into flour for bread and into feed for animals, which made them an essential part of the country’s farming economy. Fewer remain today than once existed, but some can be visited. If you are staying at Hotel Grau Roig, which appears in the MICHELIN Guide, this is a cultural outing quite different from the usual ones.
\n
From the 12th century to the 1960s
\n
According to the documents compiled by the Comú of Ordino, flour mills are recorded in the valleys between the 12th and 13th centuries. All Andorran mills ran on water power and kept the structure of medieval mills. They remained in operation until the 1960s.
\n
How many mills there were
\n
The best overall picture comes from researcher Francina Pons Pifarré, author of Moles i molins fariners d’Andorra (Aloma, 2022). In a Government publication, she gives these figures:
\n
\n
Up to the mid-20th century, 75 flour mills were operating.
\n
Oral tradition recalls another 14 older ones.
\n
27 are still standing. Three have been converted into housing, a meeting room for the Quart or a warehouse, and the rest are in varying states of repair.
\n
\n
In addition, the parish of Ordino alone had 23 millstones in the 17th century, a figure that gives an idea of how important milling was there.
\n
Why they disappeared
\n
There were several causes: floods, above all in 1937 and also in 1982; road widening; and declining use as more and more flour was imported. Many mills carried on grinding animal feed, and the last ones held out until the 1970s.
\n
Andorra’s main historic mills
\n
These are the documented mills worth knowing about. Before you go, check whether they are open, as not all of them have regular visiting hours.
\n
Cal Pal Mill and Sawmill, in La Cortinada
\n
This is the most complete site to visit. It dates from the late 16th or early 17th century and was active until around 1960. In 1996 it reopened as an interpretation centre, with all its original features restored. The guided tour includes a demonstration of woodcutting with the water-powered saw and another of grinding with the original millstone, supported by an explanatory video. The saw turned timber from the upper-slope forests into boards for building and furniture.
\n
Mas d’en Soler, also in La Cortinada
\n
Along with Cal Pal, it is among the mills Pons Pifarré lists as open to visitors. Routes organised by the Comú of Ordino have included a wheat-grinding demonstration here.
\n
Molí Vell, in Canillo
\n
It is among the parish’s documented mills, and Canillo is one of the places with a flour mill open to visitors, according to Pons Pifarré. Also in Canillo is the Tristet mill: its owner rebuilt it in under a year after the 1937 flood, on a more sheltered site.
\n
Guillem Mill, in Encamp
\n
This mill at El Tremat has been restored recently and hosts grain-grinding demonstrations.
\n
Other mills you can see
\n
\n
Arinsal: the mills in the village centre.
\n
Anyós: beside the wastewater treatment plant.
\n
Ransol: the mills in the valley.
\n
El Tarter: the Tomàs mill, cited in the Ordino documents.
\n
Santa Bàrbara, in Ordino: the end point of the 2021 millstone route.
\n
\n
The lost mill
\n
The Tobira mill in Andorra la Vella supplied flour to Andorran parishes until the 1960s and belonged to the Quart of Andorra. Its disappearance is precisely what prompted Pons Pifarré to research the country’s mills.
\n
The importance of mills in Andorran agriculture
\n
A mill was not just a building: it was the point where work in the fields turned into food. Wheat produced the finest flour, according to testimonies from the period.
\n
How a milling day worked
\n
Thanks to the testimony of Antoni Riba, of Casa Nicolau in Ordino, we know how it was organised. The farmer paid before milling, using wooden measures: half a sack was half a punyera, and a full sack was one punyera. The grain was then poured into the hopper, milled and taken home as flour. Sacks were marked in ink with the owner’s initials, so that each batch of flour went back to its rightful owner.
\n
Water, ownership and community
\n
In Pons Pifarré’s book, the mills are organised by river basin: the Valira del Nord (Ordino and La Massana), the Valira d’Orient (Canillo, Encamp and part of Escaldes-Engordany) and the Gran Valira (Andorra la Vella and Sant Julià de Lòria). It makes sense: no river, no mill. Nor was there a single model of ownership, as some belonged to private individuals, like the Canillo mill mentioned above, and others to institutions such as the Quart.
\n
Popular sayings also hint at their importance. The Comú of Ordino recalls Catalan expressions such as “combregar amb rodes de molí” and “portar l’aigua al seu molí”, which live on in the language.
\n
The contrast with the houses
\n
To understand the world around the mills, compare two houses: the noble Casa d’Areny-Plandolit in Ordino and the humble Casa Cristo in Encamp. They show very different realities within the same society.
\n
Tourist routes for visiting Andorra’s mills
\n
There is no permanent route linking them all, but itineraries have been organised and it is easy to put together your own.
\n
Itineraries that have been run
\n
\n
Millstone route: in 2021, the Comú of Ordino scheduled it between La Cortinada and Ordino, taking about three hours, with 3 flat kilometres on foot, a demonstration at Mas d’en Soler, a small display at Cal Pal and a closing tasting of cocas and breads at Santa Bàrbara.
\n
Flour mills itinerary: organised by the National Archives with Francina Pons Pifarré, it lasted about five hours and included transport.
\n
\n
These are not fixed activities, so ask about upcoming dates at the Casa de la Muntanya in Ordino, at ot@ordino.ad or on (+376) 878 173.
\n
A self-guided route in Ordino
\n
Start in La Cortinada, on Avinguda de Sant Martí, with the Cal Pal mill and sawmill. In the same village you will find the church of Sant Martí, with Romanesque paintings from the late 12th century; there are more examples in our guide to sacred art in Andorra. The Cal Pal social and cultural space occupies a building from 1347, originally an inn. Then head down to Ordino to round off the day with the Miniature Museum. If you feel like walking further, have a look at our hiking routes in Andorra.
\n
When to go
\n
Cal Pal runs its guided tours in July and August; check times and prices at museus.ad. It is also part of the PassMuseu, which costs €2.50 and gives you a 50% discount at three museums.
\n
In winter, the high season at Grau Roig, the Cal Pal mill is not on the guided tour calendar, although you can still see the outside and the village. For a day off the slopes, you will find indoor options in what to do in Andorra.
\n
Preserving and restoring Andorra’s old mills
\n
The restoration of Cal Pal in 1996 and the recent one at the Guillem mill show that these buildings still have a role as living heritage. But most of them still depend on their condition and on who looks after them.
\n
Fourteen years among rivers and archives
\n
Pons Pifarré’s book took about fourteen years to go from idea to publication. The author consulted the National Archives, communal archives, a private family archive and the National Library. She also gathered oral testimonies and walked the rivers with her husband, Teo Armengol, as well as painting 23 watercolours. It was launched on 5 July 2022 at the General Council.
\n
Why preserving them matters
\n
A mill still standing can explain the history of water, bread and work in a way a text cannot. If you visit, respect the original features and private property: some are beside rivers or on private land, and you cannot always go in.
\n
\n","categories":[{"id":"0e8c2633-22cd-52a4-8bfe-e028a5ba997f","name":"Culture","slug":"culture","parentElement":null},{"id":"425a3962-c27d-569c-ae7b-a85f0e6bb381","name":"Adventure","slug":"adventure","parentElement":null}],"acf":{"subtitle":"Where to see the flour mills that fed the valleys","lead":"Andorra's old mills: their history, Cal Pal, Mas d'en Soler, how they worked and where you can visit them on your trip.","featuredMedia":null,"isFeatured":"no"}}},{"node":{"id":"1020d47e-6806-59c3-952d-23c689e01d89","path":"/en/elite-sporting-events-andorra/","title":"Elite sporting events in Andorra: how to enjoy them from Grau Roig","date":"02 November 2026","content":"
Discover the best elite sporting events in Andorra from Grau Roig
\n
Elite sporting events in Andorra are spread across the whole country and throughout the year: alpine skiing in Grandvalira, freeride in Ordino Arcalís, cycling on the great mountain passes, mountain biking in Pal Arinsal and trail running in Ordino. Hotel Grau Roig, at the foot of the Grau Roig sector of Grandvalira, makes a comfortable base if you are coming to watch them, especially in winter, when you can combine the competition with your own days on the slopes. You can see the hotel’s listing in the MICHELIN Guide.
\n
What the hotel offers if you are coming for the sport
\n
The hotel is a 42-room boutique property with a ski-in, ski-out concept. Tickets are bought from each organiser, and the rest of your stay is taken care of here:
\n
\n
Ski Room to store your equipment
\n
Fitness room with Technogym machines
\n
Spa with a heated pool, jacuzzi, sauna and Turkish bath, plus a menu of massages and treatments
\n
\n
Activities before and after each event
\n
The setting offers far more than just watching. In winter you have skiing and snowboarding in Grandvalira and other snow activities; in summer, hiking routes and other mountain options you can ask about at the hotel.
\n
\n
Snow activities such as mushing or snowshoeing
\n
Summer and mountain activities, subject to dates
\n
Time to relax in the spa at the end of the day
\n
\n
Where to eat after the competition
\n
After a cold day out or a day on the road, there is no need to get back in the car to eat well. The hotel has five dining options: La Vaquería, El Teatro del Vino, La Marmita, La Fromagerie and Secret Room, as well as the Copper Bar with its fireplace.
\n
\n
La Vaquería, the restaurant at the foot of the slopes
\n
El Teatro del Vino, focused on wine pairing, with a cellar of more than 300 labels
\n
Copper Bar, for talking over the day beside the fire
\n
\n
How to take part in elite sporting events in Andorra from Grau Roig
\n
As a spectator or as a runner
\n
There are two ways to experience them. As a spectator, in most cases you just have to choose a date, look at the programme and arrive in good time. As a participant, you can only enter open events, such as the trail races, since the World Cups are for qualified athletes.
\n
Before you book
\n
Always start with each event’s official website, as that is where the programme, tickets and access details are published. International calendars are finalised late and sometimes change: Andorra was not on the provisional 2027 World Cup calendar until FIS confirmed it in the spring.
\n
Tickets and access
\n
Each organiser sets its own conditions. At the 2026 Pal Arinsal MTB World Cup, for example, passes were sold by the day on the official website and included lifts, shuttle buses in the Pal sector and a place in the stands, with free entry for Grandvalira Resorts season pass holders and for people with disabilities. For ski events, check whether you need a lift pass to get near the finish area; here is our guide to ski pass prices.
\n
If you are bringing companions
\n
While you follow the race, whoever comes with you has plenty to do: a day at Caldea, an afternoon’s shopping in Andorra la Vella or, in winter, their own days on the slopes. The hotel also has a Kids Club if you are travelling with children.
\n
Groups and longer stays
\n
If you are coming with a group or a team, ask the hotel directly about availability and conditions for your dates: +376 75 55 56 or info@hotelgrauroig.com. With 42 rooms, it is worth doing so well in advance, especially around competition dates.
\n
Calendar of elite sporting events in Andorra: dates and venues
\n
These are the most important events we have been able to verify. The 2026 dates are a guide to the time of year each one takes place; always check the next edition on the official website.
\n
Alpine Ski World Cup
\n
Andorra does not host it every winter, but it does so often. FIS has confirmed the women’s giant slalom on 6 March 2027 and slalom on 7 March, on the Avet piste in Soldeu. It will be the seventh time, after 2012, 2016, 2019, 2023, 2024 and 2026; Avet has already staged the 2019 and 2023 Finals. In 2026 the World Cup was held on the Àliga piste in El Tarter, with downhill and super-G from 27 February to 1 March. Soldeu and El Tarter are part of Grandvalira, just like Grau Roig, and this is the ideal event to come for at the height of the ski season.
\n
La Vuelta a España and road cycling
\n
Andorra’s mountain passes attract elite cycling. Stage 4 of La Vuelta 2026, on 25 August, started and finished in Andorra la Vella, covering 104.9 km entirely within Andorra over Envalira, Beixalís, Ordino and La Comella. In addition, the Andorra MoraBanc Clàssica, a professional race held in Sant Julià de Lòria on 21 June 2026, goes over climbs that have featured in the Tour and La Vuelta.
\n
Freeride in Ordino Arcalís
\n
Ordino Arcalís has been part of the Freeride World Tour since 2015 and was the venue chosen for the first FIS Freeride World Championships, with a window from 1 to 6 February 2026. In this discipline the exact date depends on the snow and the weather, so keep some flexibility if you want to see it live.
\n
MTB World Cup in Pal Arinsal
\n
Pal Arinsal held its eleventh edition from 9 to 12 July 2026, with short track, downhill and Olympic cross-country. The 2027 calendar already includes it from 9 to 11 July, again with XCO, XCC and DH.
\n
Trail running and ultras
\n
Trail 100 Andorra by UTMB, with Ordino as the event’s hub, took place from 11 to 14 June 2026. It is part of the UTMB World Series and ranges from 10 km to 105 km, with 6,900 m of positive elevation gain over the long distance, plus a children’s race. This one you can actually run yourself.
\n
Basketball and football
\n
Away from the mountains, MoraBanc Andorra compete in the Liga Endesa, with a 2026-27 regular season ending in May 2027, so a home game could fit into a ski week. FC Andorra played in the Segunda División in the 2025-26 season. Check their websites for the dates and venue of each match.
\n
Accommodation in Grau Roig for elite sporting events in Andorra
\n
The advantage of staying in Grau Roig is that you are up in the mountains, at the foot of the slopes, away from the bustle of competition days in the centre of the country.
\n
A ski base
\n
In winter, the ski-in, ski-out concept makes all the difference: you leave the hotel on your skis with the Grandvalira ski area ahead of you. If you are coming for the World Cup in Soldeu, you can spend the rest of the week skiing.
\n
Spa and restaurants under one roof
\n
After a day out in the open or in the stands, the spa awaits with its heated pool, jacuzzi, sauna and Turkish bath. Then you just have to choose between the hotel’s restaurants, with no need for the car and no traffic to deal with.
\n
Rooms to rest in
\n
The rooms have mountain views, and some options come with a jacuzzi; check the website to see which one suits what you are looking for.
\n
A personal touch
\n
With just 42 rooms, the hotel’s team can help you organise activities around your schedule. Just ask for what you need when you book or when you arrive.
\n
A retreat for fans
\n
If your plan is to ski and catch an event while you are here, Grau Roig works well: quiet at night, with the snow right outside the door in the morning.
\n
Tips for enjoying elite sporting events in Andorra from Grau Roig
\n
A few things worth bearing in mind so that you do not spend the day stuck in a traffic jam:
\n
Plan ahead for road closures
\n
This is the most important tip, because almost everything goes through the main road network. During the 2026 Vuelta stage, roads closed between one hour and an hour and a half before the peloton came through, the CG-2 between Encamp and Canillo was shut for about three hours, and people were asked to avoid non-essential journeys from 1 pm to 6 pm. On days like that, set off early or stay close to the hotel.
\n
Get your legs ready
\n
Many events are watched standing up, at altitude, in the cold. Dress in layers, bring sunglasses and sun cream, and do not underestimate the effort if you are walking around on snow.
\n
Make use of the spa and the fitness room
\n
Whether you are running, skiing or have simply spent the day in the stands, getting back to the hotel is the time to stretch and enjoy some time in the spa. Check the menu of treatments and massages in advance.
\n
Book dinner in good time
\n
Around competition dates, everything fills up sooner. If you want to eat at one of the hotel’s restaurants or elsewhere, book before you head out. For ideas outside the hotel, see our guide to fine dining restaurants.
\n
Leave a day free
\n
If your trip allows it, do not fill your diary with competition alone. Have a look at things to do in Andorra and set aside a day for the mountains, with no race bibs and no timetables.
\n","categories":[{"id":"01807db2-6c8f-5641-a80b-77b94f7ec34e","name":"luxury","slug":"luxury","parentElement":null}],"acf":{"subtitle":"Calendar, venues and tips for watching skiing, cycling, MTB and trail","lead":"Elite sporting events in Andorra: the 2027 Ski World Cup, freeride, La Vuelta, MTB and trail, with dates, venues and tips from Grau Roig.","featuredMedia":null,"isFeatured":"no"}}},{"node":{"id":"030374c1-7a3e-5432-82b8-db6661ece2d2","path":"/en/carmen-thyssen-museum-andorra/","title":"Carmen Thyssen Museum in Andorra: moving to the Node building","date":"02 November 2026","content":"
If you are planning a break in Andorra and looking for an afternoon of culture, take note of this change: the Carmen Thyssen Museum is no longer in Escaldes-Engordany. It has left the former Hotel Valira and is moving to the Node building in Andorra la Vella. Here is what has changed, what you will be able to see and what to visit in the meantime.
\n
A museum on the move
\n
The museum opened in 2017 in one of the country’s best-known buildings, the former Hotel Valira. It has since welcomed 122,747 visitors, with temporary exhibitions every year. The last was Vincles. Cuixart in dialogue with the Carmen Thyssen Collection, which drew 13,118 people.
\n
The Escaldes site closed for good on 4 January 2026. On 15 January, the Government of Andorra, Andorra Telecom and the Fundació Museand signed the relocation agreement, for a ten-year term according to the local press.
\n
The Carmen Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection at the new site
\n
The project changes focus. According to the local press, the permanent gallery, of about 200 m², will bring together between 40 and 50 works from the collection, centred on twentieth and twenty-first-century art, alongside rotating European loans. In other words, don’t assume you will see the same works as at the Valira.
\n
The museum’s digital space
\n
The new feature is the immersive digital area, of about 400 m². The museum describes a space geared towards digital culture that extends its exhibition model. In total it will occupy 961.81 m² on two separate floors, nearly three times the previous size, and the ground floor will house a shop and services.
\n
This outing suits any season, particularly winter: if the weather turns on a snow day or you want to rest your legs, you have an indoor alternative.
\n
Where, how and when to visit the Carmen Thyssen Museum
\n
The Node building, the future headquarters of Andorra Telecom, is on Avinguda Meritxell in Andorra la Vella. Opening was planned for October or November 2026 and, at the latest, 1 January 2027. Check the museum website before you go, both to confirm the date and to see opening hours and prices for this new chapter.
\n
In the meantime, there is more to see close by. At Avinguda Carlemany 30, in Escaldes-Engordany, the Centre d’Art houses the Viladomat Museum, devoted to the sculptor Josep Viladomat, a collection of scale models of Romanesque art and temporary exhibitions. The building, by Celestí Gusí, went up between 1932 and 1934 and was the country’s first cinema. In the same parish you will find the Perfume Museum, and in Ordino the Miniature Museum. If you prefer older art, take a look at Andorra’s Romanesque churches.
\n
An afternoon of culture from Grau Roig
\n
If you are staying at Hotel Grau Roig, in Grandvalira and listed in the MICHELIN Guide, you can ski in the morning and head down to Andorra la Vella in the afternoon. Avinguda Meritxell is also the capital’s main shopping street, so the museum pairs easily with some shopping. Back at the hotel, the spa awaits, followed by dinner at La Vaquería, El Teatro del Vino or La Marmita.
\n
Need more ideas for the rest of your trip? You will not find a whole city here as in Barcelona or Reus, just a few individual works, nearly all linked to Catalan architects who worked in the country during the 20th century. What is interesting is what came next: a local style of architecture in local stone, which changed the look of the valleys and which you can still explore in a day.
\n
A country opening up to the outside world
\n
To understand this moment you need to look at the changes of the early 20th century. Road building began at the start of the century, and from the 1930s the country went through a clear transformation, driven, according to Visit Andorra, by the boom in spa tourism, electrification, the seasonal emigration of young apprentice bricklayers and the arrival of renowned architects.
\n
An influence from Catalonia
\n
Catalan Modernisme reached Andorra late and in adapted form. The architects who worked here knew that tradition first-hand, but they had to build with other materials and for another climate. The result moves away from the urban fantasy of the great Barcelona works and towards the mountain house, with granite and slate.
\n
Leading examples of Modernista architecture in Andorra
\n
The list is short, which is why each building deserves a stop. These are the two that Visit Andorra cites as benchmarks of the period.
\n
Casa dels Russos, by César Martinell
\n
It stands in Santa Coloma, in the parish of Andorra la Vella, and dates from 1916. It is the work of César Martinell, a disciple of Gaudí, later known for his cooperative wineries in Catalonia. It was his first commission after qualifying in Barcelona, according to an article published in Altaveu. Visit Andorra explains that it uses local materials to adapt the features of Catalan Modernisme. It also has a curious story: in the early 1930s it was the home of Boris Skossyreff, the adventurer who proclaimed himself King of Andorra.
\n
Casa la Creu, by Josep Puig i Cadafalch
\n
Puig i Cadafalch, who designed the Casa Amatller in Barcelona and was a great scholar of the Romanesque, also left his mark on Andorra. Visit Andorra cites Casa la Creu, from the 1930s. A study by Enric Dilmé of his time in the country describes Casa Lacruz, in Escaldes, as his most important Andorran work: conceived as a hotel, it was redesigned as an apartment block with shops on the ground floor, with a trapezoidal plan, two upper floors and a steep slate roof.
\n
Other work by these architects
\n
Puig also worked on the church of Sant Esteve in Andorra la Vella between 1945 and 1952, with plans to enlarge it and a design for a doorway. Martinell, for his part, came back several times to restore Romanesque churches, as we explain in our guide to sacred art in Andorra. At the church of Santa Eulàlia d’Encamp he worked on the bell tower, a Lombard tower 23 metres high.
\n
Artistic and cultural influences of Modernisme in the Pyrenees
\n
The most visible legacy of this period is not strictly Modernista. It is the so-called granite architecture, which emerged in the 1930s and lasted until the 1960s.
\n
Granite architecture
\n
Its façades use local stone, so the buildings blend into the landscape. It is the Andorran version of an idea from elsewhere: making modern architecture with local materials. When you walk around Escaldes or Andorra la Vella, look at the façades from those years and you will soon recognise it.
\n
Hotels and spas
\n
Spa tourism left large establishments from this period, such as the Hostal Valira, the Hotel Carlemany and the Hotel Rosaleda. If you want to understand why they were built here, there is more background in our article on the thermal springs of Escaldes-Engordany.
\n
Electricity and radio
\n
Modernity also arrived in the form of infrastructure. From the same period come the FEDA building, linked to the arrival of electricity, the Ràmio dam and guard house, and the Radio Andorra broadcasting building. These are technical constructions, but they are part of the same story as the hotels and houses.
\n
Leisure and urban life
\n
The Valira cinema, and later the Carlemany, became centres of entertainment. The old Valira now houses the Escaldes-Engordany Art Centre, a good excuse to step inside a building from that time. Added to the list are private houses such as Casa Xurrina, Casa Vidal, Casa Palmitjavila and Casa Duró.
\n
The impact of Modernisme on Andorra’s cultural identity
\n
The influence of those decades shows above all in how the country has gone on building. The idea of combining the modern with its setting recurs in several later works.
\n
20th-century churches
\n
The church of Sant Pere Màrtir, in Escaldes, dates from 1956 and is Neo-Romanesque, with a granite façade decorated with ceramics and engravings of the Beatitudes by the sculptor Sergi Mas. Inside is an Immaculate Conception by Josep Viladomat. Later, Ricardo Bofill’s Taller de Arquitectura built the new Meritxell sanctuary, opened in 1976.
\n
Caldea and recent works
\n
In 1994 Caldea opened, designed by the French architect Jean-Michel Ruols, with its glass tower in Escaldes. It is a leap forward, but it follows the trail of the thermal water that had attracted the first visitors decades earlier. Then came the Pont de París in 2005, with two steel spheres 2.20 metres in diameter, and the Consell General building, opened in 2011 next to Casa de la Vall.
\n
Architecture in the landscape
\n
The latest works have headed for the mountains. The Roc del Quer viewpoint opened in 2016 in the Canillo valley, with a sculpture of a thinker by Miguel Ángel González. The Solar de Tristaina viewpoint is a circular metal structure 25 metres in diameter, at an altitude of 2,701 metres. And the Tibetan bridge in Canillo is 603 metres long and reaches 158 metres above the valley.
\n
Routes and essential places for exploring Modernisme in Andorra
\n
You can see all this independently and by car, with Santa Coloma and Escaldes as your anchor points. Private buildings are to be viewed from the outside, so please respect the people who live in them.
\n
A route through Andorra la Vella and Escaldes
\n
\n
Casa dels Russos: start in Santa Coloma, and take the chance to see the church with the circular bell tower.
\n
Sant Esteve: in the old town of Andorra la Vella, close to Casa de la Vall and the Consell General.
\n
Pont de París and Sant Pere Màrtir: two different eras within the urban area.
\n
Escaldes-Engordany Art Centre and Caldea: the old cinema and the great icon of 1994, to finish in Escaldes.
\n
\n
A route towards the mountains
\n
If you are coming from Grau Roig on the CG-2, you can do it on the way back: Santa Eulàlia d’Encamp, the Meritxell sanctuary, the Roc del Quer viewpoint and the Tibetan bridge in Canillo. Summer is the most comfortable time for this plan.
\n
If you are coming in the ski season
\n
Winter is the high season in Grau Roig, but the urban route is still a good idea for a day of bad weather or a rest day. Set off after breakfast, have lunch in Escaldes or Andorra la Vella, and get back in time for the spa.
\n
Where to stay
\n
The spa and five restaurants at Hotel Grau Roig, which appears in the MICHELIN Guide, make a fitting end to the day. After a day of stone and architecture, you can choose between the mountain cuisine of La Vaquería and the more avant-garde menu at El Teatro del Vino.
\n","categories":[{"id":"0e8c2633-22cd-52a4-8bfe-e028a5ba997f","name":"Culture","slug":"culture","parentElement":null},{"id":"425a3962-c27d-569c-ae7b-a85f0e6bb381","name":"Adventure","slug":"adventure","parentElement":null}],"acf":{"subtitle":"What
