This is a land of high-altitude vineyards, with small family wineries working at more than 900 metres. If you enjoy wine, two pursuits complement each other here: visiting those wineries and sitting down at a table with a good cellar behind it.
\n
High-altitude vineyards
\n
The figures explain the character of Andorran wine. Mas Berenguer plants at about 950 metres, Casa Auvinyà at 1,200 and Casus Belli between 1,250 and 1,300 metres, the highest vineyards in the country. Working at that altitude means choosing varieties that suit the climate, which is why you will see pinot noir, chardonnay, syrah, viognier and gewürztraminer here.
\n
Very small production
\n
Forget big numbers. Casa Auvinyà has 2 hectares split into five plots, and Casus Belli 3 hectares across a dozen plots worked by hand. That scale is what makes a visit interesting: you talk to the people who make the wine and taste bottles that are hard to find elsewhere.
\n
A recent history
\n
Almost everything you will taste is young. Casa Beal began in 1988, when the Visa-Tor family revived winemaking in Andorra after a gap of more than a century. Casa Auvinyà started in 2005, Casus Belli planted in 2010 and Mas Berenguer began in 2011.
\n
A table with a cellar
\n
The other half of the experience lies in the restaurants at Hotel Grau Roig, which appears in the MICHELIN Guide and has a cellar of more than 300 labels, including wines, cavas and champagnes. Its sommeliers draw on that selection to suggest pairings.
\n
The best wineries in Andorra for a wine tourism experience
\n
Visit Andorra lists five producers: Borda Sabaté 1944, Casa Auvinyà, Casa Beal, Celler Mas Berenguer and Casus Belli. They offer tours of vineyards and wineries and tasting sessions, and their wines can be bought at the winery or in local food shops. These are the details we have been able to confirm.
\n
Casa Beal (Nagol, Sant Julià de Lòria)
\n
Casa Beal is the longest-established, with vineyards above 1,000 metres and a gewürztraminer white called Cim de Cel. Guided tours run all year, last between an hour and a half and three hours depending on the option, and end with a tasting. They are offered in Catalan, Spanish, French and English. You need to book at least 3 days in advance.
\n
Casa Auvinyà (Auvinyà, Sant Julià de Lòria)
\n
Casa Auvinyà works with pinot gris, pinot noir, syrah, viognier and albariño at 1,200 metres. Its wines carry the Government’s official Vins d’Andorra seal. It offers guided tours and tastings by prior booking.
\n
Casus Belli (Ordino)
\n
Casus Belli is the only winery in the Valls del Nord and the highest in the country. It makes pinot noir, chardonnay and sparkling wines, with long ageing. Its official listing gives no details of visits, so ask the winery directly.
\n
Celler Mas Berenguer (Sant Julià de Lòria)
\n
Mas Berenguer is set in a country house at Pui d’Olivesa and works with pinot noir, chardonnay and sauvignon blanc. Its first harvest was in 2013. Ask about visits before you go, as the listing does not give opening times.
\n
Borda Sabaté 1944
\n
This is the fifth winery on the official list. We have not found confirmed details about visits, so the best option is to ask at the tourist office or through Visit Andorra.
\n
What to expect from a wine tasting in Andorra
\n
A tasting at an Andorran winery is an intimate experience, not a show. Here is what it usually involves.
\n
A tour of the vineyard and winery
\n
Visits tend to combine a walk through the vineyard with an explanation of the work in the cellar. In such a small vineyard you can see the whole process at a glance, and the altitude makes more sense on the ground than on a label.
\n
A guided tasting
\n
At the end you taste the house wines. At Casa Beal, for example, the tour finishes with a vintage tasting. It is a good moment to ask about the varieties, since international grapes adapted to the mountains lead the way here, rather than native ones.
\n
Tastings at Hotel Grau Roig
\n
If you would rather not travel, El Teatro del Vino, the hotel’s most wine-focused restaurant, offers private tastings and tailored tastings for groups on request. Book at least 24 hours in advance. Ask which format suits your dates, as the restaurant only opens on request.
\n
Pairing at the table
\n
Its tasting menu is served with a pairing of wines and champagne. To compare fine dining options, see our guide to tasting menus in Andorra. And for more ideas on where to eat well, take a look at our list of gourmet restaurants.
\n
Why wine tourism in Andorra is worth your time
\n
There are destinations with more wineries and greater fame. What makes Andorra interesting is something else.
\n
A country you can cover in a day
\n
The wineries are concentrated in Sant Julià de Lòria, in the south, and Ordino, in the north. That means you can combine one or two visits with the rest of your trip without having to set aside several days for them.
\n
Bottles that are hard to find
\n
With such small production, buying at the winery makes sense. If you are returning to Spain, bear in mind the customs limits on alcoholic drinks published by the Spanish Tax Agency.
\n
Wine and wellbeing on the same trip
\n
Combining a morning at a winery with an afternoon of relaxation is easy. The hotel has a spa with a sauna, Turkish bath, jacuzzi and pool, and if you prefer thermal waters, Caldea is half an hour away by car.
\n
An alternative for days off skiing
\n
Winter, from November to April, is Andorra’s high season. It is not harvest time, but Casa Beal’s tours continue all year, and a tasting makes a good plan for a day of bad weather or a rest between days on the Grandvalira slopes.
\n
Tips for making the most of wine tastings in Andorra
\n
1. Always book
\n
These are small wineries and they will not necessarily be open when you turn up. Casa Beal asks for 3 days’ notice and Casa Auvinyà for prior booking. El Teatro del Vino asks for 24 hours.
\n
2. Choose the right time of year
\n
If you want to see the vineyard in full activity, come between spring and autumn. In winter the interest lies in the cellar and the tasting, not the vines.
\n
3. Plan your return
\n
Mountain roads are unforgiving, especially after a tasting. Decide beforehand who is driving or take a taxi. If it will be a long day, leave the driving to someone else.
\n
4. Ask about language
\n
Casa Beal offers tours in four languages. Elsewhere, confirm when you book if you need to.
\n
5. Combine it with the rest of your trip
\n
To see what else you can do in the area, see things to do in Andorra. A day of wineries, a long dinner and some snow or mountain air make for a very complete trip.
\n","categories":[{"id":"01807db2-6c8f-5641-a80b-77b94f7ec34e","name":"luxury","slug":"luxury","parentElement":null}],"acf":{"subtitle":"High-altitude wineries, booked visits and private tastings in Grau Roig","lead":"Wine tastings in Andorra: high-altitude wineries such as Casa Beal and Casus Belli, how to book and private tastings at El Teatro del Vino.","featuredMedia":null,"isFeatured":"no"}}},{"node":{"id":"8edfe14a-353b-5472-8aa6-6e56859833b1","path":"/en/luxury-ski-in-ski-out-the-comfort-and-opulence-of-being-directly-on-the-slopes/","title":"Luxury ski-in/ski-out: the comfort of being directly on the slopes","date":"12 September 2024","content":"
What does ski-in/ski-out mean and why is it so sought after on luxury trips?
\n
The term ski-in/ski-out describes accommodation located so that you can get out on the slopes and ski back with no car or bus involved. If you are travelling to ski, you feel the difference every day: less walking on tarmac in ski boots, no parking to worry about, less waiting and more hours on the snow. It also changes the pace of the trip, because you can come back for lunch, rest for a while and head out again.
\n
Ski-in/ski-out at Hotel Grau Roig
\n
Hotel Grau Roig stands in the Grau Roig sector of Grandvalira, right by the slopes and deep in the Andorran Pyrenees. Its history is tied to that of the resort: the sector’s first ski tow was installed in 1959 beside what was then a small mountain refuge, and in 1974 it became the area’s first refuge hotel. Today it is a 42-room boutique hotel listed in the MICHELIN Guide, with One Key.
\n
Services for skiers
\n
Being next to the snow is the starting point, but the practical details are what make each day easy:
\n
\n
Direct access to the slopes: you put your skis on and start the day in Grandvalira with no transfers.
\n
Ski room: a space at the hotel to leave your equipment.
\n
Ski hire: the MICHELIN listing includes it among the services, which is useful if you prefer to travel without gear.
\n
\n
Premium experiences
\n
Away from the slopes, the hotel revolves around three things:
\n
\n
Food and drink: five dining spaces, La Vaquería, El Teatro del Vino, La Marmita, La Fromagerie and Secret Room, plus the Copper Bar.
\n
Spa: heated pool, whirlpool bath, sauna, Turkish bath and relaxation area, with a menu of treatments and massages.
\n
Mountain activities: the hotel’s website brings together snow, mountain and cultural activities to round off your stay, in both winter and summer.
\n
\n
The advantages of staying in luxury ski-in/ski-out accommodation
\n
The main advantage comes down to time and comfort. Here is what that means at Grau Roig.
\n
Direct access to the ski slopes
\n
From the hotel you reach Grandvalira, which has 215 km and 140 slopes according to the resort. If you want more, Grandvalira Resorts as a whole adds up to 308 km with Ordino Arcalís and Pal Arinsal. To decide where to start, read our guide to the ski slopes and, before you buy, how ski pass prices in Andorra work.
\n
Hotel services
\n
MICHELIN lists a 24-hour reception, 24-hour room service, valet parking, free parking and a charging point for electric vehicles. If you drive an electric car or arrive late after several hours on the road, these are details you will appreciate. After skiing, the spa is free for guests, from 10:00 to 21:00.
\n
Luxury rooms
\n
There are five types: Auténtica, Superior, Romántica, Junior Suite (designed for families) and Suite Deluxe. MICHELIN describes a contemporary, minimalist design with dark tones and light woods, far from the typical ski chalet look. Before booking, ask about the views and the exact amenities in each category.
\n
Activities and experiences
\n
As well as skiing, in winter you can go snowshoeing, mushing, snowmobiling or ski touring. During the warmer months, the area offers hiking routes and other mountain activities.
\n
Attention to detail
\n
In a 42-room hotel, the service feels more personal than in a large complex. If you have a specific request, it is best to write ahead of your arrival to confirm it. The hotel can be reached by phone, email and WhatsApp.
\n
A warm, sophisticated atmosphere
\n
The shared space that best sums up the atmosphere is the Copper Bar, a good place for a drink after the last run. And if you are interested in wine, the cellar holds more than 300 labels.
\n
Ideal destinations with luxury ski-in/ski-out hotels for an unforgettable holiday
\n
The Alps are known as the natural home of this kind of accommodation, but the Andorran Pyrenees are a very interesting alternative, especially if you are travelling from Spain, France or southern Europe.
\n
Hotel Grau Roig: a refuge in the middle of Grandvalira
\n
The hotel sits at the heart of the Andorran Pyrenees, inside the resort itself. It has belonged to the Sans Marfany family since 1986, and its history is bound up with that of these slopes.
\n
Services for a complete stay
\n
The spa and the fitness room with Technogym machines let you stay active or recover without leaving the building. If you are coming with children, bear in mind that there is a Kids Club and that under-16s cannot enter the spa between 15:00 and 21:00. It is worth planning the family’s spa visits around that.
\n
Dining of a high standard
\n
MICHELIN highlights the traditional Andorran cooking and points out that El Teatro del Vino has only 10 tables, so it is best to book in good time. Keep this in mind above all in high season.
\n
Premium activities and experiences
\n
For the more adventurous, the hotel’s website also mentions panoramic flights and heli-skiing, as well as ice ramps with inflatable rings, a fun option if you are travelling as a family. Availability depends on snow and weather, so confirm it before you count on it.
\n
Personalisation
\n
If you want to arrange lessons or book an activity or a table, tell the hotel in advance. That way you will know what can be arranged for your dates and you will not waste time on the first day.
\n
An exclusive, welcoming setting
\n
The contemporary design is one of the features that set Grau Roig apart from other ski hotels. If you are looking for something more understated than the usual Alpine aesthetic, it is a good fit.
\n
Services and comforts you can expect in luxury ski-in/ski-out accommodation
\n
These are the points you should check at any hotel in this category, along with what you will find at Grau Roig.
\n
A location with direct access to the slopes
\n
Always check that the access is genuine, with no stretches on foot in ski boots and no shuttle transfers. At Grau Roig, the hotel is right by the slopes. If you are coming in winter, remember that you will need chains or suitable tyres depending on the state of the road.
\n
Rooms and suites
\n
Look at the size, the layout and whether connecting rooms are available, something MICHELIN confirms here and which is practical for families. Check-in is at 15:00 and check-out at 12:00, so plan your first and last days of skiing around those times.
\n
Gastronomy
\n
The convenience of a hotel on the slopes is not having to take the car for dinner. With five dining spaces you can spend several days without returning to the same table, and the wine cellar adds one more reason to stay at the hotel.
\n
Spa and wellness
\n
After skiing, what you appreciate most is warmth and water. The spa combines a heated pool, sauna and Turkish bath. In summer, the Summer Lounge adds sun loungers and an outdoor jacuzzi for up to 8 people, with mountain views.
\n
Personalised services
\n
MICHELIN also lists a luggage room, useful if your room is not ready yet or you want to ski on your last day after checking out. Ask the hotel to confirm times and conditions.
\n
Events and meetings
\n
The hotel has meeting and event rooms, an option for companies wanting to combine work and snow. Check capacities and equipment directly with the team.
\n
Tips for choosing the best luxury ski-in/ski-out hotel for your next trip
\n
Finding the right hotel depends on how you ski and who you are travelling with. These criteria will help you compare, and also help you judge whether Grau Roig is what you are looking for.
\n
Location and direct access to the slopes
\n
Look at a map of the resort before booking. Check which lifts are nearby, which grades of slope lie next to the hotel and how you will get back at the end of the day. This is the decision that will affect your trip the most.
\n
Services and experiences
\n
Make a list of what you will really use. For example:
\n
\n
Spa: check the opening hours and age restrictions.
\n
Restaurants: see whether there is enough variety for your whole stay and whether you need to book.
\n
Reception: check whether it is open 24 hours, useful if you arrive late.
\n
\n
Rooms and suites
\n
Choose according to how you will really use them. If your plan centres on skiing, an Auténtica or Superior room may be enough; if you are travelling as a family, a Junior Suite or connecting rooms will give you more flexibility.
\n
Activities and entertainment
\n
If not everyone in your group skis, this carries a lot of weight. Snowshoeing, mushing or snowmobiling let everyone do their own thing and meet up for lunch or dinner.
\n
Staff and attention to detail
\n
Before booking, write with your questions. How quickly and clearly they reply says a great deal about the care you will receive on arrival.
\n","categories":[{"id":"01807db2-6c8f-5641-a80b-77b94f7ec34e","name":"luxury","slug":"luxury","parentElement":null}],"acf":{"subtitle":"What a slope-side hotel in Grandvalira really offers","lead":"Luxury ski-in/ski-out in Andorra: what it means, what to check before booking and what you will find at Hotel Grau Roig in Grandvalira.","featuredMedia":null,"isFeatured":"no"}}},{"node":{"id":"5361093b-10d3-5427-9395-4de65fd35909","path":"/en/dinners-in-high-mountain-refuges-a-vip-culinary-experience/","title":"Dinners in High Mountain Refuges in Andorra: Where You Can Really Eat","date":"12 September 2024","content":"
You can have dinner in a high mountain refuge in Andorra, but it helps to know what to expect. A staffed refuge is a simple building with bunks, mountain cooking and a warden looking after whoever walks in. There is no wine list and no transfer to the door. What you do get is a hot meal above 2,000 metres and a silence that is hard to find anywhere else. This guide covers the refuges that genuinely serve meals, plus the mountain dinners you can book in winter at Grau Roig.
\n
What makes dinner in a high mountain refuge special
\n
You get there on foot
\n
According to Visit Andorra, the country has around thirty refuges, all of them reachable on foot. That is both the appeal and the catch: you earn your dinner on the way up, and it often means spending the night, because walking down a mountain path in the dark is not a good idea. Most people therefore treat it as a two-day outing, with dinner and a bed at the refuge and the descent the following morning.
\n
Staffed and unstaffed are two different things
\n
Only staffed refuges serve food. Unstaffed ones, such as Cabana Sorda, Siscaró, Perafita or Montmalús, have no service, so you bring your own, as this guide to Andorra’s refuges explains. Before you plan the route, check which group your chosen refuge belongs to.
\n
Mountain cooking, not fine dining
\n
You eat what a warden can realistically prepare at that altitude: home-style food, a set menu, hot and cold dishes. Expect honest portions and shared tables. If you are after a long menu with wine pairing, you will be happier with our pick of fine dining restaurants in Andorra or a traditional borda restaurant, both reachable by car.
\n
Staffed refuges in Andorra where you can have dinner
\n
These are the four staffed refuges listed by Visit Andorra. Calendars change from year to year and sources do not always agree, so confirm dates and book directly with each one.
\n
Juclar refuge (2,310 m)
\n
The closest to the Grau Roig area, it stands beside the Estany Primer dam in the Juclar valley. Leave the car at the car park at the far end of the Incles valley and walk up from Pont de la Baladosa. It offers food and drinks, 43 places according to refuges.info, and a free-access room. It is staffed from June to September. In winter it opens by prior reservation for groups of eight or more, weather permitting. Website: refugidejuclar.com.
\n
Borda de Sorteny (1,965 m)
\n
In the Sorteny Valley Nature Park, in the parish of Ordino. It is the lowest of the four and the closest to a restaurant, with an à la carte menu and set menus. Visit Andorra lists it as open in summer and also from December to April, which makes it one of the few realistic options in the snow season. Website: refugisorteny.com.
\n
L’Illa refuge (2,488 m)
\n
Just below the dam of Illa lake, in the Madriu-Perafita-Claror valley, a World Heritage site. It is the highest of the four and provides food and accommodation in both summer and winter, with closures in spring and autumn. The refuge guide mentions breakfast, lunch and dinner. The climb is long, and in winter it calls for experience and snow equipment. Website: refugidelilla.ad.
\n
Comapedrosa refuge (2,260 m)
\n
In the Comapedrosa Valleys Nature Park, at the other end of the country. You walk up from the Arinsal car park along the trail to Estany de les Truites. It serves cold dishes, hot dishes and a set menu, and has 48 places. It is open from June to mid-October. Outside those dates it only takes bookings from groups of at least ten, although the government is looking at extending its opening into winter through a pilot scheme. Website: refugicomapedrosa.ad.
\n
Mountain dinners in winter at Grau Roig
\n
November to April is the high season here, and during those months high mountain refuges are out of reach for almost everyone. The realistic alternative is the resort’s mountain restaurants and its evening outings.
\n
Night activities with dinner
\n
The operator Rocroi lists three options at Grau Roig on its night activities page: a two-hour snowshoe walk after dark with dinner for two, 40 minutes on a double snowmobile with dinner in a mountain restaurant, and a 10 km evening dog-sledding outing with dinner. A piece on its blog recounts one such evening: a guided snowmobile ride up to dinner at Vodka Bar, a chalet reachable only via the slopes, with the return to the car park in a snow groomer. If this appeals, first read how snowmobiling at Grau Roig works, or our pieces on mushing and snowshoeing.
\n
Refugi del Llac de Pessons
\n
Despite the name, this is a slopeside restaurant rather than a mountain refuge in the usual sense. It sits on the lakeshore at 2,350 metres, according to this guide to Grandvalira restaurants, in a stone borda above Grau Roig. The menu pairs escudella and trinxat with grilled meats. The same guide mentions that you can book a dinner, but gives no times, so ask them directly before counting on it.
\n
The Grau Roig igloo
\n
Neilson describes reservation-only dinners inside an igloo decorated by Andorran artists at the Hotel Iglú in Grau Roig. It depends on the season and the snow, so check that it is open.
\n
Dinner at Hotel Grau Roig after the mountains
\n
Hotel Grau Roig, featured in the MICHELIN Guide, sits right by the slopes and makes the evening easy if you would rather not go out again. Its five restaurants are: La Vaquería, with traditional mountain food; El Teatro del Vino, with more avant-garde ideas; La Marmita, with market and seasonal cooking; La Fromagerie, for fondues and raclettes; and Secret Room. The cellar holds more than 300 wines, cavas and champagnes. For a drink afterwards there is the Copper Bar.
\n
How to organise your refuge dinner
\n
\n
Choose the refuge according to the time of year. Visit Andorra recommends routes above 1,700 metres from late June to late September, or from May to October if conditions allow.
\n
Book directly. Write to or call the refuge itself and confirm that dinner is being served that day, especially out of season.
\n
Plan the way back. The sensible option is to sleep up there. If you intend to come down, do so in daylight and carry a head torch.
\n
Prepare for the climb. Mountain boots, warm layers, water and a weather check. In winter, add snow equipment and knowledge of avalanche risk. The emergency number is 112.
\n
\n
If you would like to combine dinner with a good walk, our hiking routes in Andorra will help you choose.
\n","categories":[{"id":"01807db2-6c8f-5641-a80b-77b94f7ec34e","name":"luxury","slug":"luxury","parentElement":null}],"acf":{"subtitle":"Staffed refuges, mountain cooking and evening outings with dinner in the snow","lead":"Dinners in high mountain refuges in Andorra: staffed refuges that serve food, when they open, and winter dinners at Grau Roig.","featuredMedia":null,"isFeatured":"no"}}},{"node":{"id":"793977fb-c8de-5ad9-a865-11f1e747c667","path":"/en/glamour-snow-what-to-pack-luxury-ski-trip-hotel-grau-roig/","title":"Glamour on the snow: what to pack for skiing at Hotel Grau Roig","date":"12 September 2024","content":"
Discover glamour on the snow: your stay at Hotel Grau Roig
\n
A hotel right in the resort
\n
Hotel Grau Roig sits in the Grandvalira resort, in the Grau Roig sector, and is listed in the MICHELIN Guide. That location shapes much of your packing: you will spend the day on the snow, the afternoon in the spa and the evening in a restaurant, with barely any need to go elsewhere. So there is no need to bring half your house, just to choose well.
\n
This guide tells you what to pack for a stylish ski trip, with winter in mind, the hotel’s main season. If you have questions about anything specific at the hotel, ask before you leave: +376 75 55 56 or info@hotelgrauroig.com.
\n
What the hotel already has
\n
Knowing what is at the hotel helps you avoid carrying what you will not use.
\n
\n
Spa: heated pool, sauna and Turkish bath. Entry is free for guests.
\n
Ski Room: a space for your equipment. Ask what it includes when you book.
\n
Fitness room and Kids Club: useful if you want to keep moving or are travelling with children.
\n
Restaurants: La Vaquería, El Teatro del Vino, La Marmita, La Fromagerie and Secret Room, plus the Copper Bar.
\n
\n
Activities that affect your luggage
\n
If you plan to do more than ski, bear it in mind when packing. The hotel website lists snowshoeing, mushing, snowmobiles, ski touring and the Imaginarium Ski School as options to enquire about. Technical ski clothing works for all of them, although ski touring requires specific equipment.
\n
How to plan your suitcase
\n
Divide everything into four occasions: slopes, après-ski, spa and dinner. If each item works for at least one and ideally two, half your packing is done.
\n
What clothes to pack for a luxury ski trip at Hotel Grau Roig
\n
The key is the same as at any high-mountain resort: layers. They let you adapt to the early-morning cold, the midday sun and the wind on a chairlift.
\n
For skiing
\n
A thermal base layer, ideally merino wool or a technical fabric, as it dries quickly and does not retain odours. Over that, a mid-layer of fleece or light down. On the outside, a waterproof, breathable jacket and trousers. Take at least two base layers if you will ski several days in a row. Choose whichever brand suits you best: what counts is the fit and how it stands up to water.
\n
For after skiing
\n
A thick wool or cashmere jumper, comfortable trousers and snow boots with a good sole. This is the outfit you will wear most: for a drink at the Copper Bar, a walk or a trip down to Andorra la Vella in the afternoon.
\n
For dinner
\n
One or two items that make you feel well dressed will do: a knitted dress, a shirt, a blazer or dark trousers. If you have a special dinner at El Teatro del Vino or Secret Room, that is the moment to bring them out. Check with the hotel if you are unsure about a particular occasion.
\n
Essential accessories for a glamorous ski trip
\n
Accessories take up little space and they are what makes the difference to your day.
\n
On the slopes
\n
\n
Helmet: it protects and keeps you warm. Make sure it fits with your goggles.
\n
Goggles: ideally with lenses for sun and low light, or bring two pairs.
\n
Gloves: good quality and waterproof. A thin pair underneath helps on cold days.
\n
Neck warmer: it takes up very little room and gives a lot of warmth.
\n
Ski socks: thin and technical. A thick sock inside the boot is not always warmer.
\n
\n
Protection
\n
The sun is strong on the snow, so do not forget high-factor sunscreen, lip balm and a moisturiser, because cold and altitude dry the skin. Bring sunglasses for the terraces: goggles are only for the slopes.
\n
Technology
\n
A power bank is a good idea, because cold drains batteries quickly. Take a phone case too and download the piste map before you go out. If you like filming your runs, an action camera and its mounts weigh very little.
\n
Getting around with your lift pass
\n
An easy-to-open jacket pocket saves you taking out your card at every lift. If you do not have one yet, check the lift pass prices in Andorra before you travel.
\n
Tips for packing your suitcase for Hotel Grau Roig
\n
Spa: what you cannot do without
\n
Always pack a swimsuit; it is the item most often forgotten and the one you will miss most. Flip-flops, and a swim cap if you like to use one, complete the kit. The spa is open from 10.00 to 21.00. If you are travelling with under-16s, remember they can use it until 15.00.
\n
Ski equipment: to bring or not to bring?
\n
If you have your own skis and boots, bring them in a wheeled bag and keep the boots in their own bag. For anything else, it is worth asking at the hotel what options there are nearby before carrying it all.
\n
Hand luggage
\n
If you are travelling by car, keep warm clothing within reach, as you may need it when you get out. Also check road conditions and whether your vehicle needs chains or winter tyres.
\n
Children
\n
The hotel has a Kids Club. For children, double up on gloves and socks, because they get wet easily and take time to dry. The Imaginarium Ski School may be a good option if they are beginners; ask about dates and places.
\n
Depending on what you plan to do
\n
Five days of non-stop skiing is not the same as combining the slopes with other activities. Tailor your packing to your plans:
\n
\n
Snowshoeing: ski clothing is fine, but add a light layer, because you sweat more walking. Poles and a small rucksack will come in handy; ask what equipment is included.
\n
Mushing and snowmobiles: you will spend time standing still or in cold air. Bring an extra layer, a neck warmer and warm gloves.
\n
Night skiing: Grandvalira’s floodlit areas are in Pas de la Casa (Sunset Park Peretol and the Tubs piste). It is colder at night, so keep a jumper handy and take goggles with a clear lens.
\n
An afternoon at Caldea or in Andorra la Vella: a swimsuit and clean snow boots are all you need.
\n
A day of hard snow or wind: an extra windproof layer takes up little space and can save your day.
\n
\n
If you intend to ski non-stop, prioritise technical clothing. If you are coming mainly to switch off, comfortable things for the spa and dinners matter more. Either way, a few good items beat lots of average ones.
\n
Leave some room
\n
Andorra is a shopping destination. Save some space for what you take home, and if you plan to buy technical gear, compare prices before you leave home.
\n
High-end accommodation: Hotel Grau Roig in the heart of the ski slopes
\n
Convenience at the foot of the slopes
\n
Being in the resort itself changes the logistics. We explain this in more detail in our article on ski-in, ski-out stays, and if you want to organise your days, in the guide to skiing in Grandvalira.
\n
Dining
\n
The hotel’s dining comprises five venues: La Vaquería, El Teatro del Vino, La Marmita, La Fromagerie and Secret Room. If you enjoy wine, the cellar holds more than 300 references, and you can read more about wine tastings in Andorra. Have a look at the hotel restaurants to decide which dinner deserves that shirt.
\n
Spa and recovery
\n
After several hours of skiing, some time in the heated pool, sauna or Turkish bath is the best thing for your legs. If you would like to book a treatment, ask for the menu at reception.
\n
Before closing your suitcase
\n
Run through the list: layers, helmet and goggles, gloves, sunscreen, swimsuit, something for dinner and space for the journey home. With that you are ready for Grau Roig.
\n","categories":[{"id":"01807db2-6c8f-5641-a80b-77b94f7ec34e","name":"luxury","slug":"luxury","parentElement":null}],"acf":{"subtitle":"","lead":"What to pack for skiing at Hotel Grau Roig: technical layers, accessories, spa and dinner wear for your winter stay in Grandvalira.","featuredMedia":null,"isFeatured":"no"}}},{"node":{"id":"b0caf251-b9df-5d92-b31f-ca0975d53b0a","path":"/en/via-ferratas-in-andorra/","title":"Via ferratas in Andorra","date":"19 February 2020","content":"
Whether we explore it in winter or summer, Andorra lets us enjoy nature in its purest state. And if you want to experience that nature at close quarters, one of the most stimulating options is the via ferratas of Andorra.
\n
What exactly is a via ferrata?
\n
These are equipped routes that travel across the mountain itself, not along roads or footpaths, but up its rock faces. You move along clipped to a safety cable, using holds fixed to the rock. It may sound reckless, but with the right equipment and a well-chosen route it is a very rewarding activity.
\n
Via ferratas in Andorra can be done with friends or family, and there are options for beginners, although some require experience. Check the level of each route before choosing. Difficulty is usually shown on the K scale: K2 is easy, K3 moderate and K4 difficult.
\n
Bear the height in mind. These routes offer extraordinary bird’s-eye views, but the exposure is considerable, so they are not the best choice if you suffer badly from vertigo. If you have mild vertigo and are keen to see the mountains, start with a beginners’ route and a guide.
\n
The equipment you need includes a helmet, a harness with adjustable leg loops, an energy absorber (compulsory), two slings plus a third for resting, a figure-of-eight and rope for the abseil back, gloves and comfortable shoes with thick, non-slip soles.
\n
The via ferratas of Andorra
\n
Andorra’s mountains have more than ten via ferratas at all levels. In total there are 14 routes plus 2 cable routes. You can choose between short beginners’ routes and others of about 400 metres for people with experience.
\n
I am going to show you some of them in detail so that, with all the information in front of you, you can choose the best one for you. Grades, times and height gains are approximate, unless stated otherwise. Confirm them before setting out.
\n
Routes in Canillo
\n
Canillo is one of the areas with the most via ferratas in Andorra. It is a perfect setting for spending the day surrounded by nature. These are some of the most notable routes:
\n
1. Canal de la Mora
\n
K2, of low difficulty, with about 75 minutes on the route and 200 metres of height gain. It is a good choice if you want to get started in this activity.
\n
2. Roc del Quer (La Directíssima)
\n
K3, moderate, with about 90 minutes on the route and 350 metres of height gain. I recommend it for people who have already done a via ferrata, because it is higher and longer.
\n
3. Racons
\n
Visit Andorra rates it as difficult and for experts only: about 400 metres, with 210 metres of height gain and between 3 and 6 hours in total. It has a very vertical wall, overhanging sections and no emergency exits, so do not choose it as your first route. It is graded K4.
\n
4. Canal del Grau and Roc del Gos
\n
Also in Canillo, these are for people with experience. Canal del Grau is K3, with 60 minutes and 90 metres of height gain. Roc del Gos is K4+, the hardest on the list: short but intense, with exposed moves.
\n
Routes in Encamp
\n
This is another of my favourite areas for this activity, because it has routes for very different levels. It is also the parish of Hotel Grau Roig, which is listed in the MICHELIN Guide. The most notable via ferratas in Encamp include:
\n
1. Clots de l’Aspra
\n
K2, perfect for beginners. It takes about 30 minutes on the route with 70 metres of height gain, an ideal way to try it out if you do not have much experience.
\n
2. Bony d’Envalira
\n
This route is rated moderate, K3, with 90 minutes on the route and 200 metres of height gain. It is the most alpine, as it finishes on the summit, at 2,685 metres. If you are physically fit and like a challenge, it comes highly recommended.
\n
Other via ferratas
\n
Although these two areas are the best known, there are routes elsewhere in the country:
\n
\n
Ordino: Creu de Noral (K2, easy, 90 minutes) and Segudet (K2, moderate, 90 minutes).
\n
La Massana: Roc de Coma d’Erts (K2, moderate, 100 minutes and 200 metres of height gain). Not recommended in winter.
\n
Santa Coloma: Sant Vicenç d’Enclar (K3, moderate, 60 minutes and 190 metres of height gain), very close to the chapel of the same name.
\n
Escaldes-Engordany: Roc d’Esquers (K3, moderate, 100 minutes and 250 metres of height gain).
\n
Pas de la Casa: Coll dels Isards (K2, moderate, 60 minutes).
\n
Sant Julià de Lòria: Tossal Gran d’Aixovall (K3, 30 minutes and 40 metres of height gain), a good option for beginners.
\n
\n
How to get organised
\n
Always do these routes with someone else and use all the safety systems. If you have neither experience nor equipment, go with a guide. The hotel includes via ferrata among its mountain activities, and you can check availability directly with the hotel team.
\n
To find out about other options this season, see also our guides to hiking routes, climbing in Andorra and summer activities in Grandvalira.
\n
And in winter
\n
If you come at the height of the snow season, swap the rock face for the piste. From Grau Roig you have the Grandvalira ski slopes, and the hotel also lists snowshoeing, mushing, snowmobiling and ski touring.
\n","categories":[{"id":"425a3962-c27d-569c-ae7b-a85f0e6bb381","name":"Adventure","slug":"adventure","parentElement":null}],"acf":{"subtitle":"Andorra, spectacular in every season.","lead":"Via ferratas in Andorra: levels, times and height gains for routes in Canillo, Encamp and other parishes, with options for beginners.","featuredMedia":{"altText":"","sourceUrl":"https://admin.hotelgrauroig.com/content/uploads/2019/09/via-ferrata-andorra.jpg","localFile":{"childImageSharp":{"croppedSizes":{"aspectRatio":1.3274336283185841,"src":"/static/2b0fecd7826833aab19cfbfa10776baf/a3e80/via-ferrata-andorra.jpg","srcSet":"/static/2b0fecd7826833aab19cfbfa10776baf/f2477/via-ferrata-andorra.jpg 150w,\n/static/2b0fecd7826833aab19cfbfa10776baf/eb94d/via-ferrata-andorra.jpg 300w,\n/static/2b0fecd7826833aab19cfbfa10776baf/a3e80/via-ferrata-andorra.jpg 600w,\n/static/2b0fecd7826833aab19cfbfa10776baf/2f1e0/via-ferrata-andorra.jpg 900w,\n/static/2b0fecd7826833aab19cfbfa10776baf/1f384/via-ferrata-andorra.jpg 1200w,\n/static/2b0fecd7826833aab19cfbfa10776baf/59295/via-ferrata-andorra.jpg 2048w","sizes":"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px"},"croppedSizesDuotone":{"aspectRatio":1.3274336283185841,"src":"/static/2b0fecd7826833aab19cfbfa10776baf/5c485/via-ferrata-andorra.jpg","srcSet":"/static/2b0fecd7826833aab19cfbfa10776baf/464df/via-ferrata-andorra.jpg 150w,\n/static/2b0fecd7826833aab19cfbfa10776baf/4f3d6/via-ferrata-andorra.jpg 300w,\n/static/2b0fecd7826833aab19cfbfa10776baf/5c485/via-ferrata-andorra.jpg 600w,\n/static/2b0fecd7826833aab19cfbfa10776baf/a6ba0/via-ferrata-andorra.jpg 900w,\n/static/2b0fecd7826833aab19cfbfa10776baf/d1600/via-ferrata-andorra.jpg 1200w,\n/static/2b0fecd7826833aab19cfbfa10776baf/c58fd/via-ferrata-andorra.jpg 2048w","sizes":"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px"}}}},"isFeatured":"no"}}},{"node":{"id":"04149edf-c22b-5c89-8a83-2fa6fe14dc2f","path":"/en/a-relaxing-day-at-the-spa-in-caldea-andorra/","title":"A relaxing day at the Caldea spa, Andorra","date":"19 February 2020","content":"
You are spending a few days in Andorra, with family or friends. The first days you ski from first thing in the morning, in the evening you try the mountain cuisine, and one afternoon you slip away to the shops. But after several days on the go, your body asks for a break. That is when a relaxing day at the Caldea spa makes perfect sense.
\n
Caldea thermal spa
\n
Caldea is a large thermal leisure centre in Escaldes-Engordany, and one of those places that surprise you with their size as soon as you walk in. It has several thermal water areas, with lagoons, baths, sauna, hammam and massage rooms, organised by visitor type and age, so it is worth choosing carefully before you go.
\n
What stays with you most after a day at Caldea is the outdoor lagoon, especially in winter when the mountains are covered in snow. It has been refurbished as part of the full transformation that began in 2024, with hydromassage beds and a water bar. Check the temperature and access on Caldea’s website before you go, as the refurbishment may have altered parts of the circuit.
\n
Inside, the spa has two areas designed for anyone looking for more calm.
\n
Inúu Spa
\n
Open to those aged 16 and over. It has an indoor and an outdoor lagoon, the Berlingot and a jacuzzi, along with reactivation areas with sauna, hammam and contrast showers. You can also book a private spa, which can be combined with a massage for two. Admission to Inúu includes access to Thermoludic and Orígens, plus towel, bathrobe and flip-flops, so it is the most complete option if you are going without children and want to give it the whole day.
\n
Orígens Spa
\n
Orígens is a more intimate area that you access through a massage booked together with Thermoludic admission. Here you will find the grapefruit bath, an Aztec-inspired space with a tropical garden, Caldea’s best-known hammam and outdoor jacuzzis. It is the place to take your time, especially if you arrive with tired legs after several days of skiing.
\n
An ideal spa for the whole family
\n
Travelling with children does not have to mean getting no rest. Caldea has spaces for the youngest members of the family and for you to enjoy too, as long as you keep in mind the age rules for each area.
\n
Thermoludic Spa
\n
This is the largest area and the main one for families, open to children from 5 upwards. It has an indoor lagoon with hydromassage tubs and swan-neck jets that massage your neck, Indo-Roman baths with contrasting hot and cold water, an Icelandic bath, an aqua-massage area, sauna and hammam. Leave the panoramic outdoor lagoon until last, with its 360-degree mountain views.
\n
Likids
\n
If you are travelling with children between 3 and 8, Likids presents itself as a thermal spa just for them. It has a mini-lagoon, a jacuzzi and play areas with equipment suited to their age, as well as supervised games. As times and places can change, check them before planning your day.
\n
Massages at Caldea
\n
Massages are another of Caldea’s services, and they are also your way into Orígens. You can book them with Thermoludic admission, or combine a massage for two with the private spa at Inúu. The range changes over time, so it is best to look at the current menu and book ahead if you have a fixed date, especially during the ski season.
\n
Dining at Caldea
\n
If you plan to spend the day there, have a look at the food and drink options on its website before you go, including the lagoon bar. And if you would rather go out for lunch, you will find more ideas in our guide to fine dining in Andorra. Escaldes-Engordany also has other options for the afternoon, such as the natural hot springs or the Perfume Museum.
\n
Where to stay in Andorra
\n
To round off the break, Hotel Grau Roig is right in the mountains, at the foot of the Grau Roig sector of Grandvalira, and features in the MICHELIN Guide. That way you can combine snow in the morning, with skiing in Grandvalira on your doorstep, with a day of thermal water in Escaldes.
\n
If you do not feel like taking the car one day, the hotel has its own spa, with a heated pool, jacuzzi, sauna and Turkish bath. It links La Massana with the Port de Cabús and, on the far side, with the Tor valley in Pallars Sobirà. Before you set off, though, you should know that this route is no longer what it was: since 2026, a key stretch has been closed to visitors. Here is what you can and cannot do today.
\n
Why is it called the “Smugglers’ Route”?
\n
The name means exactly what it suggests: this mountain was a crossing point between Andorra and Catalonia, a border territory where goods moved clandestinely for decades. Andorra’s link with tobacco helps to explain it: the Reig factory operated in Sant Julià de Lòria from 1909 to 1957 and is now the Museu del Tabac, with display cases devoted to smuggling.
\n
During the Second World War, some smugglers knew these passes so well that they worked as guides for fugitives on the escape lines across the Pyrenees. If this part of the story interests you, read about the freedom route and the mark left by smugglers in Andorra.
\n
What has changed: access to Tor
\n
Read this before you make any plans. According to VilaWeb, in August 2026 the co-owners of the mountain of Tor banned visitors arriving from Andorra from using the private track between the Port de Cabús and the village of Tor. That stretch is reserved for residents, and signs warn that you cannot continue along the mountain’s private tracks.
\n
This is not an isolated case. According to 3Cat, the owners had already asked some 15 companies based in Andorra to stop advertising routes through Tor, because any activity on this private land needs their permission. They also installed two gates, intended to close the mountain in winter.
\n
In practical terms: do not cross from Cabús to Tor, whether on your own or with a company that lacks express authorisation. If you book a route, ask exactly where it goes.
\n
The route you can still do: La Massana to Cabús
\n
The Andorran section remains open and is well worth the trip.
\n
The climb to the Port de Cabús
\n
From La Massana, go up through Pal and follow the CG-4 road to the Port de Cabús. The Andorran side is paved, so you do not need a 4×4 here. Do expect bends, though: if you are prone to car sickness, take it slowly.
\n
In Pal, it is worth stopping to see Sant Climent de Pal, a church from the late 11th and early 12th centuries with a three-storey Lombard bell tower. Higher up you will see the Coll de la Botella, one of the stargazing viewpoints of the La Massana Starlight Reserve.
\n
Port de Cabús
\n
Cabús is not a village but a border mountain pass at 2,328 m, with sweeping views over the valleys on both sides. It is normally open from May to October and can close in bad weather, especially in winter. On the far side the track is unpaved, and that is where the private stretch now off limits to visitors begins.
\n
You return along the same road towards La Massana, and from there you can carry on to Escaldes-Engordany and Andorra la Vella.
\n
Tor, from the Catalan side
\n
According to VilaWeb, Tor can still be reached from Alins on the valley road, since an inhabited village cannot be cut off. That means going round via the Catalan side, without passing through Cabús. Once there, remember that the mountain tracks are private and you cannot drive on them without permission. And carry your documents with you if you cross the border.
\n
The dark history of Tor
\n
Tor is famous for more than its scenery. According to 3Cat, the village has seen as many as three murders. The best-known case is that of Josep Montané “Sansa”, found dead in his home on 30 July 1995, five months after becoming sole owner of the mountain. The crime remains unsolved.
\n
The story reached a wide audience through reports and a series by Carles Porta, and visitor numbers grew so much that they led to the current restrictions. Today, according to 3Cat, Casa Sisqueta is the only establishment open to visitors. Check that it is open before you go.
\n
And at night?
\n
The image of the smuggler walking by night is part of the myth, but you will not be able to recreate it in Tor. The night-time routes with dinner in the village that were advertised years ago should be confirmed with their operator, who should be able to show the owners’ permission.
\n
If what appeals to you is adventure after sunset, in winter there is an alternative very close to the hotel: the RocRoi centre in Grau Roig organises night-time outings by snowmobile, on snowshoes and by dog sled, some with dinner.
\n
Alternative routes
\n
In summer
\n
The Hotel Grau Roig website includes 4×4 and quad routes among its mountain activities. Ask at the hotel where they go before booking. You will find more ideas in our article on off-road vehicle routes.
\n
In winter
\n
With the Port de Cabús out of season, motorised adventure moves to the snow. Grandvalira is the Principality’s major ski area and the hotel sits in one of its sectors, so here is what each area offers to help you decide where to spend each day on the snow.
\n
Ski slopes in Grandvalira
\n
Grandvalira has long been among the favourite destinations of those who love the snow. According to the resort, it has 215 km and 140 pistes, spread across 7 access sectors, and 66% of the area has snowmaking cover. It also has seven FIS-approved pistes, 55 km of snowshoe trails and 53 km for ski touring. If you want a resort where you can try a new run every day, this is the one to choose. Let’s look at what each of these sectors offers.
\n
Encamp sector
\n
This is the first access to the resort you reach when arriving from Spain and the one closest to Andorra la Vella and Escaldes-Engordany, so if you are staying in either town, it makes sense to start here.
\n
From Encamp, the Funicamp gondola climbs for around 6 km, one of the longest in Europe, up to Solanelles (2,502 m). Once at the top, take a moment to enjoy the panoramic views of the resort. Younger children have the Kids Forest circuit in the Cortals area.
\n
Canillo sector
\n
Ideal for families and anyone new to the snow. Its easy runs are a good place to build confidence and get a first feel for skiing. For children there is Mon(t) Magic, the themed circuit in the El Forn area.
\n
If you plan to spend most of your time in this sector, you can stay in the village of Canillo itself, a quiet, family-friendly place. In summer the area stays busy, with activities for the whole family at the Family Park.
\n
El Tarter sector
\n
El Tarter is one of the areas with the widest range of options in Grandvalira. This is home to the El Tarter Snowpark, designed for those who already have experience and are looking for jumps and features.
\n
Families have their place here too: children can have fun on the Turbo Snow Explorers children’s circuit, a themed route on the snow.
\n
Soldeu sector
\n
This is a good sector if you want to ski by day and go out at night, thanks to its choice of bars. Little ones have Yôkai here, another of the area’s themed circuits.
\n
Soldeu also stays active out of season: in summer you can take a bike ride around the Bike Park, surrounded by nature.
\n
Grau Roig sector
\n
If you want to spend a few days in a high-mountain setting, we recommend the Grau Roig area. It has no town centre, so the atmosphere is peaceful and the mountain is within reach from first thing in the morning. This is where we are based: take a look at the advantages of a ski-in ski-out hotel if you want to get on and off the slopes with no fuss.
\n
Hotel Grau Roig, which features in the MICHELIN Guide, is a mountain spa hotel in the high Pyrenees. With the spa, La Vaquería, El Teatro del Vino, La Marmita, La Fromagerie and Secret Room, you will have few reasons to leave except to ski and enjoy mountain activities.
\n
The sector has ski runs for all levels, for children and adults alike. It also has Sunrise Park Xavi, its own snowpark, and Kids Forest in the Coma i Piolet area.
\n
Pas de la Casa sector
\n
This is one of the best-known areas of Grandvalira and a regular destination for many skiers. It brings together a very comprehensive range of pistes, hotels, restaurants, leisure and shopping.
\n
Its runs suit everyone, with different levels of difficulty, and there is another Kids Forest in the Abelletes area. You can also ski at night here, an option we cover further down. Being at the top, with the runs at your feet and the Pyrenees all around, makes any early start worthwhile.
\n
Peretol sector
\n
The season dossier includes Peretol among the access points, which is why we speak of seven sectors. This is where you will find the Sunsetpark by Henrik Harlaut, the third of Grandvalira’s snow parks alongside those at El Tarter and Grau Roig.
\n
Everything you need is in Grandvalira
\n
The slopes in Andorra let you make the most of every minute of your trip. As you have seen, there are areas for children, adults, beginners and expert skiers. The resort has seven ski and snowboard school centres with more than 500 instructors, six themed children’s areas, a permanent timed run and three freeride zones.
\n
It is also worth knowing that there are five medical centres in the ski area, and around 60 places to eat and recharge. If you would like to see the prices before you come, you will find everything in our guide to ski pass prices in Andorra.
\n
Then there is the après-ski: a drink with music at the resort itself is a fine way to close a full day on the slopes. You can end the day with dinner at a gastronomic restaurant in Andorra or, if you still have the energy, glide down the night run at Pas de la Casa, with a ski pass at €28.50, according to the rate published by Grandvalira.
\n
If you want to swap your skis for something else, take a look at the hotel’s snow activities, such as snowmobiles, mushing or snowshoeing, or at ski touring in Andorra. A trip like this is well worth it, whether with family or friends.
\n","categories":[{"id":"4d089d30-abfa-5272-9232-9f4608aab852","name":"ski","slug":"ski","parentElement":null}],"acf":{"subtitle":"A practical guide to the Grandvalira sectors to help you choose where to ski each day.","lead":"Ski slopes in Andorra: what each Grandvalira sector offers, from Encamp to Pas de la Casa, with 215 km, 140 pistes and options for every level.","featuredMedia":{"altText":"","sourceUrl":"https://admin.hotelgrauroig.com/content/uploads/2019/09/nuestras-pistas-de-esqui-en-andorra-hotel-grau-roig.jpg","localFile":{"childImageSharp":{"croppedSizes":{"aspectRatio":1.3274336283185841,"src":"/static/4c73f0e55f3f8166348cc19842a713b8/a3e80/nuestras-pistas-de-esqui-en-andorra-hotel-grau-roig.jpg","srcSet":"/static/4c73f0e55f3f8166348cc19842a713b8/f2477/nuestras-pistas-de-esqui-en-andorra-hotel-grau-roig.jpg 150w,\n/static/4c73f0e55f3f8166348cc19842a713b8/eb94d/nuestras-pistas-de-esqui-en-andorra-hotel-grau-roig.jpg 300w,\n/static/4c73f0e55f3f8166348cc19842a713b8/a3e80/nuestras-pistas-de-esqui-en-andorra-hotel-grau-roig.jpg 600w","sizes":"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px"},"croppedSizesDuotone":{"aspectRatio":1.3274336283185841,"src":"/static/4c73f0e55f3f8166348cc19842a713b8/5c485/nuestras-pistas-de-esqui-en-andorra-hotel-grau-roig.jpg","srcSet":"/static/4c73f0e55f3f8166348cc19842a713b8/464df/nuestras-pistas-de-esqui-en-andorra-hotel-grau-roig.jpg 150w,\n/static/4c73f0e55f3f8166348cc19842a713b8/4f3d6/nuestras-pistas-de-esqui-en-andorra-hotel-grau-roig.jpg 300w,\n/static/4c73f0e55f3f8166348cc19842a713b8/5c485/nuestras-pistas-de-esqui-en-andorra-hotel-grau-roig.jpg 600w","sizes":"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px"}}}},"isFeatured":"no"}}},{"node":{"id":"f9fd290e-b049-5f5b-88bc-d5e597eeba4e","path":"/en/madriu-valley-infinity-nature/","title":"Madriu Valley: route, refuges and what to see in this UNESCO site","date":"24 September 2019","content":"
The Madriu-Perafita-Claror Valley route
\n
The valley was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Cultural Landscape on 1 July 2004. Its beauty was not the only reason: the Committee recognised a joint work of people and nature, a living testimony to rural mountain life, with its forests, pastures, paths and uses of water.
\n
Its core zone covers 4,247 hectares, coincides with the Madriu river basin and accounts for around 10% of the country. With the 4,092 hectares of the peripheral protection zone, the whole site covers almost a fifth of Andorra and is shared between four parishes: Encamp, Andorra la Vella, Sant Julià de Lòria and Escaldes-Engordany.
\n
You can choose between routes of varying difficulty. The classic itinerary proposed by Visit Andorra is 13.6 km long with 1,180 metres of ascent, and is rated difficult. If you want to go much further, there are multi-day treks linking refuges.
\n
From Hotel Grau Roig, which features in the MICHELIN Guide, the valley is very much part of the local landscape: the Skimo 6 ski mountaineering race of the Dynafit Andorra Skimo starts in Grau Roig and enters the Madriu. For walking, the usual approach is through Escaldes-Engordany, returning to the hotel to rest and recover in the spa.
\n
Discover the Madriu Valley in summer
\n
Summer is the best time to explore it. Above 1,700 metres, Visit Andorra advises walking between late June and late September; if the weather and terrain allow, the season can stretch from May to October.
\n
You will find intense greens, very clear water and the river beside you for most of the way. You can also combine the walk with other activities in the area, such as hiking routes in Andorra or a day’s fishing in Andorra, always with the relevant permit and in line with the regulations.
\n
The wild and varied fauna of the Madriu Valley
\n
If you walk quietly and patiently, you may come across chamois, roe deer, mouflon, wild boar, foxes, marmots, martens and squirrels. This is their home, so watch them from a distance, do not disturb them and do not feed them. A pair of binoculars helps a great deal, especially early in the morning and late in the day.
\n
A route that stays with you
\n
The Madriu-Perafita-Claror Valley offers different options depending on your experience and the time you have. If it is your first visit, the classic itinerary is the most direct way to get to know it.
\n
The route starts in Escaldes-Engordany, about 30 metres from the junction of the La Comella and La Plana road with the Engolasters road, where you will see a sign. A stone path enters the valley and leaves the Perafita valley on the right. You will soon reach the group of Entremesaigües bordes (traditional barns) and, following the path, the Ràmio bordes.
\n
Walking alongside the Madriu river, through forest and clearings, you will start to feel the climb. After the Fontverd refuge you pass the huts of La Farga, Serrat de la Barracota and La Ingla, until you reach the Riu dels Orris refuge. A little higher up is Lake La Bova, named after the bulrush that grows here in abundance, a plant typical of wet areas.
\n
When you get here, stop. Drink some water, sit down for a few minutes and enjoy the landscape before starting back, because the descent is demanding too and you need to save your strength. The official route sheet allows 3 to 6 hours for the itinerary, so set off early to return in daylight.
\n
If you want something longer
\n
The valley also fits into longer routes. Above the lake is the staffed L’Illa refuge, at 2,480 metres, beside the Estany de l’Illa at the head of the valley. The GR 11 also passes through here. There is also a very difficult 33 km trail route linking Fontverd, Riu dels Orris, L’Illa, Estanys de la Pera and Perafita, which includes a technical ridge section: it is only for runners with high mountain experience.
\n
Discover the huts along the way
\n
One of the valley’s great attractions is its pastoral heritage. The bordes and huts you pass along the way speak of how people lived and worked here, and they are the reason UNESCO recognises it as a cultural landscape. Some 99% of the land is communal property; the rest belongs to around thirty private owners at the bottom of the valley, so please respect the buildings and properties.
\n
Some refuges are unstaffed and others staffed. Fontverd is small and mainly useful in an emergency, and Riu dels Orris has few places, so do not count on finding a bed without checking first. After your walk, the borda restaurants serving traditional mountain food are a good choice for a meal.
\n
Safety first
\n
This is a demanding route, so it pays to go prepared. Wear proper mountain footwear and bring supplies of food and drink: staying hydrated is key. Check the forecast before you leave and tell someone where you are going.
\n
The Madriu in winter
\n
The area’s main season is winter, when the valley is covered in snow and the route changes completely. To see it this way, go on snowshoes, in a group and with a guide who specialises in the area, and check the avalanche risk first. If your skiing level is up to it, ski touring is another way to get to know these landscapes.
\n","categories":[{"id":"425a3962-c27d-569c-ae7b-a85f0e6bb381","name":"Adventure","slug":"adventure","parentElement":null}],"acf":{"subtitle":"A World Heritage cultural landscape in the heart of Andorra","lead":"Madriu Valley: route, refuges, wildlife and the best time to explore this UNESCO cultural landscape in Andorra, in summer and winter.","featuredMedia":{"altText":"","sourceUrl":"https://admin.hotelgrauroig.com/content/uploads/2019/05/valle-del-madriu.jpg","localFile":{"childImageSharp":{"croppedSizes":{"aspectRatio":1.3274336283185841,"src":"/static/b06d7b7c674bef09d9343d446ee9f661/a3e80/valle-del-madriu.jpg","srcSet":"/static/b06d7b7c674bef09d9343d446ee9f661/f2477/valle-del-madriu.jpg 150w,\n/static/b06d7b7c674bef09d9343d446ee9f661/eb94d/valle-del-madriu.jpg 300w,\n/static/b06d7b7c674bef09d9343d446ee9f661/a3e80/valle-del-madriu.jpg 600w,\n/static/b06d7b7c674bef09d9343d446ee9f661/2f1e0/valle-del-madriu.jpg 900w,\n/static/b06d7b7c674bef09d9343d446ee9f661/1f384/valle-del-madriu.jpg 1200w","sizes":"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px"},"croppedSizesDuotone":{"aspectRatio":1.3274336283185841,"src":"/static/b06d7b7c674bef09d9343d446ee9f661/5c485/valle-del-madriu.jpg","srcSet":"/static/b06d7b7c674bef09d9343d446ee9f661/464df/valle-del-madriu.jpg 150w,\n/static/b06d7b7c674bef09d9343d446ee9f661/4f3d6/valle-del-madriu.jpg 300w,\n/static/b06d7b7c674bef09d9343d446ee9f661/5c485/valle-del-madriu.jpg 600w,\n/static/b06d7b7c674bef09d9343d446ee9f661/a6ba0/valle-del-madriu.jpg 900w,\n/static/b06d7b7c674bef09d9343d446ee9f661/d1600/valle-del-madriu.jpg 1200w","sizes":"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px"}}}},"isFeatured":"no"}}},{"node":{"id":"7361ac8a-ee58-57df-b67f-bed223f7a659","path":"/en/the-incles-valley-the-paradise-available-to-everyone/","title":"The Incles Valley in Andorra: Easy Walk, Wildlife and Lakes","date":"24 September 2019","content":"
The Incles valley is one of the best easy walks in Andorra if you want to get away from the noise and stroll between forest and river. Here is how to get there, which route to take, what to see in each season and what to bear in mind if you come in winter.
\n
The Incles valley, a one-of-a-kind place
\n
It is not among the country’s most visited areas, which works in its favour. Its U shape gives away its glacial origin: a valley open at one end, with the river along the floor and black pine on the slopes.
\n
It lies between El Tarter and Canillo, in the parish of Canillo, and you reach it by car from Grau Roig along the main road. That makes it a good half-day outing if you are staying at Hotel Grau Roig, featured in the MICHELIN Guide: you walk in the morning and come back to the spa to rest your legs.
\n
The best-known route is the Camí de l’Obac, 2.6 km long and easy, according to Visit Andorra. It is a shaded path running along the forest and the river to the far end of the valley, and it suits children. You can do it at a gentle pace in a morning, with no previous mountain experience. Families can ask at the information office at the valley entrance, or the one in Canillo, for the guide to the “Look for them” trail game, which earns a certificate and an entry into a prize draw once completed.
\n
There is always a good time to visit the Incles valley
\n
The best period starts around June, once the snow has gone. In spring the valley wakes up little by little and the most intense greens appear. In summer it gets most of its visitors, which is why it is closed to vehicles. In autumn the foliage turns and the path takes on striking contrasts.
\n
From mid-June to early September you can travel through it in an electric buggy, similar to a golf cart, which goes all the way to the far end of the valley. It is a comfortable option if you are with older people or small children. The service ends before the Meritxell festival on 8 September. Tickets are sold at the information booth beside the car park, where you can also check the timetable.
\n
The Incles valley in winter
\n
From November to April snow takes over and the valley becomes a completely different landscape. Before you go, ask about the state of the path at the Canillo tourist office: (+376) 753 600 or vdc@canillo.ad. If there is snow, you will need suitable footwear and, depending on conditions, snowshoes. Here are more ideas for exploring Andorra on snowshoes. If you are here to ski, the valley is very close to the Grandvalira slopes, so it can make a good outing for a day off the slopes. What you should not do is head for the high lakes without winter experience: above the valley floor the terrain changes and the avalanche risk is real.
\n
Discover the wildlife in its natural habitat
\n
Few things are as enjoyable as watching animals in the wild, and here you only have to look up. Birds of prey fly over the valley, including the griffon vulture, the bearded vulture and the golden eagle. Lower down, in the forest, you may spot goldfinches and wrens. The Port d’Incles, on the French border, is also a crossing point for migrating birds.
\n
Near the lakes and rivers you will find newts and the common frog, and towards Siscaró it is easy to come across marmots. In the black pine forests you may also see squirrels and roe deer. Bring binoculars if you enjoy wildlife watching, walk slowly and stay on the path.
\n
And if what you want to see is the plant life…
\n
The valley’s ecosystem stands out for its black pine and fir forests. In the meadows and undergrowth, the flowers change with slope and altitude: you will find the poet’s daffodil (Andorra’s national flower), lily of the valley and gentians, along with shrubs such as broom and rhododendron. If you can, come in early summer, when the flowers are at their best.
\n
The routes that start from the Incles valley
\n
The valley is also the gateway to other mountain areas with classic routes. From here you can climb to three groups of lakes, each with its refuge: Cabana Sorda, Juclar and Siscaró. Juclar also has the largest lake in the country. These routes are on a different level from the walk along the valley floor, so plan them carefully.
\n
You can also continue to the Port d’Incles, at around 2,260 metres on the French border, or take the Roc de l’Home Dret trail. If you want more high mountain walking, have a look at our guides to the Pessons lakes and Andorra’s glacial lakes. And if you like the idea of spending the night up there, Juclar is one of the refuges in Andorra where you can have dinner.
\n
Always come prepared to the Incles valley
\n
Even though the path along the valley floor is straightforward, you are still in the mountains. Bring comfortable shoes, warm clothing, water and sun protection. Check the forecast before you leave and remember that the weather changes quickly at altitude. The emergency number is 112.
\n
To plan your stay, see also our hiking routes in Andorra and mountain activities.
\n","categories":[{"id":"425a3962-c27d-569c-ae7b-a85f0e6bb381","name":"Adventure","slug":"adventure","parentElement":null}],"acf":{"subtitle":"One of the prettiest easy walks in Andorra, between forest and river","lead":"Incles valley in Andorra: an easy 2.6 km walk, summer electric buggy, wildlife, nearby lakes and what to bear in mind in winter.","featuredMedia":{"altText":"","sourceUrl":"https://admin.hotelgrauroig.com/content/uploads/2019/06/valle-de-incles.jpg","localFile":{"childImageSharp":{"croppedSizes":{"aspectRatio":1.3274336283185841,"src":"/static/9caf5715cd9b31c4858926cf3b9692e0/a3e80/valle-de-incles.jpg","srcSet":"/static/9caf5715cd9b31c4858926cf3b9692e0/f2477/valle-de-incles.jpg 150w,\n/static/9caf5715cd9b31c4858926cf3b9692e0/eb94d/valle-de-incles.jpg 300w,\n/static/9caf5715cd9b31c4858926cf3b9692e0/a3e80/valle-de-incles.jpg 600w,\n/static/9caf5715cd9b31c4858926cf3b9692e0/2f1e0/valle-de-incles.jpg 900w,\n/static/9caf5715cd9b31c4858926cf3b9692e0/1f384/valle-de-incles.jpg 1200w","sizes":"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px"},"croppedSizesDuotone":{"aspectRatio":1.3274336283185841,"src":"/static/9caf5715cd9b31c4858926cf3b9692e0/5c485/valle-de-incles.jpg","srcSet":"/static/9caf5715cd9b31c4858926cf3b9692e0/464df/valle-de-incles.jpg 150w,\n/static/9caf5715cd9b31c4858926cf3b9692e0/4f3d6/valle-de-incles.jpg 300w,\n/static/9caf5715cd9b31c4858926cf3b9692e0/5c485/valle-de-incles.jpg 600w,\n/static/9caf5715cd9b31c4858926cf3b9692e0/a6ba0/valle-de-incles.jpg 900w,\n/static/9caf5715cd9b31c4858926cf3b9692e0/d1600/valle-de-incles.jpg 1200w","sizes":"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px"}}}},"isFeatured":"no"}}},{"node":{"id":"31c4d684-8eb7-5843-9c9a-c21640d5b9c1","path":"/en/pessons-lakea-dream-you-wont-wake-up-from/","title":"Pessons Lakes: route, key facts and when to go from Grau Roig","date":"24 September 2019","content":"
Discover the beauty of the heart of Andorra
\n
Do you love real mountains and getting away from the pace of the city every now and then? Then make a note of this escape: the Pessons Lakes and Cirque, a glacial granite cirque full of lakes, in the Grau Roig sector of Grandvalira. It is one of the best-known high-mountain routes in the country, and it begins practically on the hotel’s doorstep.
\n
The route sets off from the El Cubil car park, in Grau Roig, in the parish of Encamp, at an altitude of about 2,100 m. All around you, the peaks reach close to 2,800 m.
\n
The route in figures
\n
You will see different figures depending on the source, because they do not all measure the same route. These are the two most useful references:
\n
\n
The official Visit Andorra route: 5.95 km and +707 m of ascent up to the Coll de Pessons, graded difficult, 3 to 6 hours. You can see the details on the Visit Andorra website.
\n
The circular walk via the Solana lakes: 11 km, about 530 m of cumulative ascent and around 4 hours of actual walking not counting stops, between 2,103 m at El Cubil and a viewpoint at 2,605 m above the Estany del Cap dels Pessons, according to the Rutas Pirineos route sheet, which rates it as medium difficulty.
\n
\n
Whichever version you choose, this is not a stroll for everyone: it demands good fitness and there are stretches of scree. If you have no mountain experience, go with a guide.
\n
The lakes you will find
\n
The official route names five in the order you reach them:
\n
\n
Estany Primer, at about 2,300 m, home to the mountain restaurant with a terrace.
\n
Estany Rodó.
\n
Estany Meligar.
\n
Estany de les Fonts.
\n
Estany del Cap dels Pessons, the last one before you tackle the pass.
\n
\n
The tally for the cirque changes depending on whether you include only the main lakes or the seasonal pools too: Rutas Pirineos talks of seven main lakes, while Visit Andorra, on its trail page, mentions more than twenty across the whole group. If you want to compare with similar spots, take a look at our guide to Andorra’s glacial lakes.
\n
A place this high deserves accommodation to match
\n
If you want to set off early without a drive first, spend the night at Hotel Grau Roig, a boutique hotel in the same sector where the route begins, which is listed in the MICHELIN Guide with One Key.
\n
Rest well the night before and, on your return, soothe your legs in the spa, with its heated pool, sauna and Turkish bath, free for hotel guests, or book a massage. For dinner, you can choose anything from the mountain cooking at La Vaquería to the fondues and raclettes at La Fromagerie.
\n
Hotel and route chosen, let the adventure begin
\n
Rucksack, water, walking boots, sun cream. With those, you are ready to start.
\n
You have two alternatives. The first is to go up and back along the same path. The second is the circular walk, climbing past the Pessons lakes and coming down past the Solana lakes. I would choose the second, for the change of scenery on the descent.
\n
The climb follows the GR 7, with its red and white waymarks. From El Cubil, take the track towards Estany Primer, go round its south side, and the path rises gently until it crosses an area of granite scree and zigzags towards the pass. With a bit of luck you will hear marmots.
\n
To come down via the Solana lakes, turn north at Estany de les Fonts. This is the tricky point: some of the waymarks are hard to spot, so take your time and download the GPS track beforehand.
\n
When to visit the Pessons Lakes
\n
From late June to September
\n
Visit Andorra recommends walking above 1,700 m from late June to late September, with some leeway from May to October if the weather and terrain allow. Start early: there will be more room in the car park and more leeway before any afternoon storms. Snow can linger on the paths in spring, so ask about the state of the route if you are going early in the season.
\n
In winter, with snowshoes and a guide
\n
In winter the route lies under snow and is no longer a hiking trip. The sensible option is to go with snowshoes and a qualified guide. Rutas Pirineos, for example, schedules a 9.5 km, +530 m snowshoe outing to the cirque from El Cubil, with about 4 h 30 min of walking and a qualified mountain guide. Check the outing programme and its dates.
\n
On your own, you will need experience of winter terrain and to check the avalanche risk beforehand. If you are coming by car, remember that in Andorra you must carry snow equipment from 1 November to 15 May.
\n
Enjoy the walk to the Pessons Lakes
\n
Along the way you are surrounded by some of the summits that shape the cirque: Montmalús (2,781 m), Ríbuls (2,827 m), Pessons (2,864 m) and Ensagents (2,852 m). It is worth stopping at the Estany del Cap dels Pessons to look up before deciding which way to go down.
\n
And if you are left wanting more, carry on with our hiking routes in Andorra, the Incles Valley, a more accessible option, or the full list of things to do in Andorra.
\n
Before you set off
\n
Even if it looks like a short outing on the map, go well prepared in case you lose your way or it gets late. More than a decade of partnership with Cirque du Soleil has turned July into one of the liveliest months in the country: since 2013, almost a million people have seen the productions created for Andorra.
\n
In 2026, Cirque du Soleil presented Ràdio Andorra, from 3 July to 2 August. It was the twelfth production backed by Andorra Turisme and followed Il·lu, the previous year’s show. The contract also covers a 2027 edition, so keep an eye on the official programme if you are thinking of coming next summer.
\n
A love story travelling across the airwaves
\n
Ràdio Andorra pays tribute to the station that was born in 1940, in the middle of the Second World War, and whose slogan, “Aquí, Ràdio Andorra”, reached much of Europe and North Africa. For years it was the country’s main link with the outside world, which is why it is regarded as Andorra’s first major international promotion.
\n
The plot begins with a coincidence. Glòria and Lasso, two strangers thousands of kilometres apart, write to the station in the 1940s to request the same song. Curiosity leads them across Europe to Andorra, at the height of the swing and big band era, guided by the invisible voices of the radio. The story draws on the real letters that listeners sent in to ask for their favourite tunes.
\n
When and where to see Cirque du Soleil
\n
The 2026 edition had 22 performances, Tuesday to Saturday at 10 pm, with a final show on Sunday 2 August. Doors opened at 8 pm.
\n
The venue was set up in the Prada Casadet bus car park, opposite the Government building in the centre of Andorra la Vella. It is a large, fully covered big top, so rain is rarely a problem. The 2027 venue was still undecided when these details were published, with Espai Capital and Parc Central as the options, so check it before planning your trip.
\n
If you would like to stay up in the mountains and come down to the capital for the show, Hotel Grau Roig, which features in the MICHELIN Guide, lets you combine the performance with nature and a spa. As a guide, these were the 2026 prices, depending on the area and the day:
\n
\n
General: from about €25 up to €32.
\n
Central: €30 to €37.
\n
Preferred: €36 to €43.
\n
Premium: €49 to €59.
\n
\n
Prices change with each edition, so treat these as a rough guide only. July is high season and tickets go quickly, so it pays to book early, especially if you are coming as a family or want the best seats. The show is suitable for children.
\n
Staging designed so you miss nothing
\n
The 2026 big top reduced its capacity from 3,500 to 3,150 people per performance. The side areas with poor visibility were removed and the stage gained extra width.
\n
The production included ten acrobatic numbers, four of them world premieres, along with brand-new acts and adapted versions of earlier numbers. Almost 3,000 spectators from 44 nationalities attended the premiere.
\n
Live music with a jazz feel
\n
The music is played live and evokes swing, big bands and the great female voices of jazz. Two singers, Blaza and Nicole, embody the voices of the radio and carry the story from beginning to end.
\n
Tap, magic and acrobatics
\n
Another thread running through the show is the Bojangles, tap dancers who represent the radio waves and accompany the main characters on their journey. There is also a new magic act. It is best to arrive early to catch the warm-up entertainment and to bring a light jacket: when you come out, at around 11 pm, the temperature drops even in July.
\n
Andorra beyond the summer
\n
Cirque du Soleil is a July outing, but the mountains hit their peak season when the snow arrives. Between November and April you can ski on our ski slopes in Andorra, in the Grandvalira area, and end the day at Caldea or in the hotel spa. For more ideas at any time of year, see our guide to things to do in Andorra.
\n","categories":[{"id":"0e8c2633-22cd-52a4-8bfe-e028a5ba997f","name":"Culture","slug":"culture","parentElement":null}],"acf":{"subtitle":"Every summer, Andorra la Vella hosts a
