Visit Andorra highlights six in its official selection, with shared features such as a single semicircular arch and a cobbled roadway with a small stone parapet. If you are staying at Hotel Grau Roig, which features in the MICHELIN Guide, you can visit them on a day trip by car, as they are in the central valleys.
\n
A route you can put together yourself
\n
You do not need to book anything to see them: most are beside the road or right in town. If you would like an explanation, the tourist office in each parish is the best place to ask. Margineda and Sant Antoni de la Grella are the best known, and you can add Engordany and La Tosca, very close to each other in Escaldes-Engordany.
\n
Back at the hotel
\n
After a day of driving and strolling, the hotel spa has a heated pool, hot tub, sauna, Turkish bath and relaxation area, open from 10:00 to 21:00 and included for guests. For dinner you can choose from:
\n
\n
La Vaquería: traditional mountain food at the foot of the slopes.
\n
El Teatro del Vino: tradition and modernity with wine in the leading role, and a cellar of more than 300 labels.
\n
La Marmita: market-led, seasonal cooking.
\n
La Fromagerie: fondues and raclettes.
\n
\n
History and the present day
\n
The story of the bridges does not end in the Middle Ages. The type lasted for centuries, and many have been repaired or rebuilt: those that survive date from between the 15th and 20th centuries, with medieval origins in several cases. So although people tend to speak of “medieval bridges”, it is worth looking at the history of each one. And if you enjoy walking, several of them are part of the Royal Road of Andorra, the old network of tracks linking the villages.
\n
Explore Andorran medieval architecture through its bridges
\n
The architecture of these bridges is simple and very recognisable. The norm is a single semicircular stone arch, with a more or less hump-backed profile and a narrow roadway designed for people and pack animals, not cars.
\n
What to look out for on each bridge
\n
Before you start, it helps to know what to look at:
\n
\n
The arch: almost always single. At Margineda, for example, it spans more than 9 metres.
\n
The roadway: cobbled, with a low stone parapet on each side.
\n
The profile: the rise and fall of the hump-back is easy to see at Ordino and Margineda.
\n
The materials: Engordany and Sant Antoni de la Grella have elements in tufa stone.
\n
\n
The traginers behind many bridges
\n
These bridges existed for transport. The traginers, the muleteers who carried goods between valleys, used them every day. Sant Antoni Abad was their patron saint, hence the name of the La Massana bridge.
\n
Where they fit on the map
\n
You will find them along the Valira rivers. Margineda is on the Gran Valira, on the road from Sant Julià de Lòria to Andorra la Vella via Santa Coloma. Engordany and La Tosca are on the Valira d’Orient, in Escaldes-Engordany. Ordino, now in Llorts, is in the Valira del Nord valley. If you want to combine your visit with a walk, our guide to hiking routes in Andorra has more options.
\n
The main historic bridges of Andorra you should not miss
\n
These are the ones worth stopping for, with details from Visit Andorra and other heritage sources.
\n
Pont de la Margineda
\n
It crosses the Gran Valira on the boundary with Sant Julià de Lòria, on the old road to Andorra la Vella. The tourist office dates it to the 15th century, although no document fixes its construction and some attribute a Romanesque origin to it. It measures 33 metres long and over 9 metres high, and it is the largest surviving medieval bridge in Andorra. Beside it stands a modern sculpture by the Valencian artist Vicenç Alfaro, with two arches representing the country’s past and present.
\n
Pont d’Engordany
\n
It stands in the centre of Escaldes-Engordany, over the Valira d’Orient, and for a long time it was the only point linking the two settlements. A flood destroyed the first bridge in 1772 and it was rebuilt in 1785. Notice its asymmetrical profile, leaning to the left.
\n
Pont de la Tosca
\n
Just a few minutes’ walk from Engordany, this one dates from 1820. It has a 7-metre span, stands 10 metres above the riverbed and appears on the parish coat of arms. It is a remnant of the old Royal Road of the Vall d’Orient, which led towards France.
\n
Pont de Sant Antoni de la Grella
\n
On the royal road of La Massana, beside the Romanesque chapel of the same name. Of medieval origin, it was rebuilt in the mid-20th century. It measures 21.20 metres long and 5.55 metres high at the arch. It is dedicated to Sant Antoni Abad, patron saint of the traginers.
\n
Pont d’Ordino or Pont de l’Estorell
\n
This bridge was part of the road between Andorra la Vella, Ordino and El Serrat. In 1980 it was moved stone by stone to Llorts when the road was widened. Today you can see it there, with its hump-backed profile and cobbled roadway.
\n
Pont dels Escalls
\n
This Asset of Cultural Interest lies on the road that linked Escaldes-Engordany, Andorra la Vella and La Massana. The 2023-2024 excavations were unable to establish its chronology: a document from 1434 already mentions it, and at its southern end there is a 16th-century boundary cross. It was restored in 2024 and adapted for visitors.
\n
\n
If you are short of time: Engordany and La Tosca, a few minutes’ walk from each other.
\n
If you have children with you: the Camí Ral section from Ordino to Llorts is suitable for families, and you finish at the bridge.
\n
To compare with the modern: the Pont de Paris, from 2005, in Andorra la Vella.
\n
\n
The importance of medieval bridges in the history of Andorra
\n
In a country of narrow valleys, bridges shaped the passage of people and goods. That is why many are associated with a specific road: Margineda with the one from Sant Julià to Andorra la Vella, La Tosca with the Vall d’Orient road and Sant Antoni de la Grella with the La Massana road.
\n
A political role
\n
The Pont dels Escalls has a documented political episode: according to the Government’s archaeological report, the treaty ending the armed revolt of 1881 was signed there that year.
\n
What we know and what we do not
\n
Dating these bridges is difficult. At Escalls, dating of the mortar points to between the 10th and 12th centuries, but the report warns that these results may have been altered by later remodelling. At Margineda, there is no document fixing its construction either. It is a good reminder that the history of these bridges is still being researched.
\n
From medieval to modern
\n
Andorra is still building remarkable bridges. The Pont de Paris, from 2005, is the work of engineers Leonardo Fernández Troyano and Guillermo Ayuso Carrer, with a 45-metre straight section and a 27-metre semicircular one. And in Canillo, much closer to Grau Roig, the Tibetan bridge is 603 metres long with a maximum height of 158 metres above the valley.
\n
Other places to round off the route
\n
Near Margineda is the Balma de la Margineda, a site showing human presence from 10,000 BC. Sant Antoni de la Grella is also one of the three main sanctuaries cited by Fiter i Rossell in 1745, together with Meritxell and Canòlich Sanctuary. And if you want more Romanesque, there is our article on Romanesque churches in Andorra.
\n
Tips for a photography tour of Andorra’s historic bridges
\n
If you are bringing a camera, stone bridges are a rewarding subject. These tips will help you organise the day, and if you would like more locations, see our photography routes in Andorra.
\n
Plan the order
\n
From Grau Roig you will need to head down towards the central valleys, so start with whichever point interests you most. Escaldes-Engordany has several bridges very close together. Margineda lies further south, towards Sant Julià de Lòria. Ordino and Llorts are up the northern valley, so you may prefer to give them a separate day with the Camí Ral.
\n
What framing to look for
\n
The arch shows up better from the bank, if you can get down safely, than from the roadway. From above, the cobbles and the parapet are your best subjects. Do not walk into the river or go down where there is no path.
\n
Watch out for the road
\n
Some bridges are very close to roads with traffic. Margineda is next to the CG-1, and the new bridge is about 100 metres away: park where it is allowed and walk.
\n
Modern bridges for contrast
\n
From Plaça de la Rotonda, in Andorra la Vella, you can see the Pont de Paris with its two steel spheres measuring 2.20 metres. Visit Andorra lists it among the most photographed places in the country, and next to it are the light and music fountains by the Valira.
\n
If you are coming in winter
\n
Grau Roig’s main season is the ski season, from November to April. The urban bridges of Escaldes-Engordany make an excellent choice for a day off the slopes, as they are right in town. On other days, you have the Grandvalira slopes and snow activities you can ask about, such as snowshoeing, mushing or snowmobiles. Before setting off, check the state of the mountain roads.
\n
To finish the day
\n
When you get back, you have the Copper Bar for a drink and, in summer, the Summer Lounge with loungers and an outdoor hot tub. It is a good moment to go through the day’s photos.
\n","categories":[{"id":"0e8c2633-22cd-52a4-8bfe-e028a5ba997f","name":"Culture","slug":"culture","parentElement":null},{"id":"425a3962-c27d-569c-ae7b-a85f0e6bb381","name":"Adventure","slug":"adventure","parentElement":null}],"acf":{"subtitle":"Margineda, Engordany, La Tosca and other stone crossings","lead":"Historic bridges of Andorra: Margineda, Engordany, La Tosca and Sant Antoni de la Grella. Grandvalira has a green beginners’ area in every sector, with a gentle gradient and close to the lifts, and more than 400 instructors. With that foundation, just a few hours are enough to come down easy runs with confidence.
\n
Lessons: what makes the biggest difference
\n
The first day often determines whether you will end up enjoying skiing. That is why tuition deserves your closest attention, even before equipment.
\n
Private lessons
\n
Grandvalira’s private lessons are available in all sectors and at all levels, in blocks of two, three or four hours, with a maximum of six people per instructor. They are the best option for a beginner who values their time: the pace adapts to you, the lesson focuses on what you need and it is the recommended way to guarantee the language of instruction. If you are travelling as a couple, you can share an instructor, provided you are at a similar level.
\n
A good plan is to book your lesson for the morning, when you are freshest, and leave the afternoon to practise what you have learned or to rest. Available times appear in the school’s booking system, so do not leave it until the last minute.
\n
Top Class
\n
If you want the experience with maximum comfort, Top Class offers a four-hour half day or an eight-hour full day. Grandvalira includes in this service private lockers and lounges, ski trials with leading brands and a transfer from the hotel. When you book, ask for confirmation of exactly what your option includes and in which sector.
\n
Group courses
\n
Group courses last three hours a day and bring together skiers of the same level. They have their charm if you are motivated by learning with others, although they offer less individual attention. Multi-day courses usually start on Mondays and, in Soldeu and El Tarter, on Saturdays too. Check the dates when planning your trip.
\n
Where to start in Grandvalira
\n
Grandvalira has 215 km and 140 slopes across seven sectors, including 24 green runs, the easiest of all. You can learn in any of them, but each offers a different experience:
\n
\n
Canillo: the resort describes it as perfect for families and beginners, with easy slopes for a first experience.
\n
Encamp: Grandvalira’s website considers it ideal for learning to ski, with access by the Funicamp from the town.
\n
Soldeu: it has a wide beginners’ area with several drag lifts, a magic carpet and a school. Astoret is one of the most suitable blue runs for the next step.
\n
El Tarter: it combines green and blue runs with a school, making it convenient for progressing. The blue Esquirol run is a good reference point.
\n
Pas de la Casa: the blue Isards is a good run for progressing.
\n
Grau Roig: it has slopes for all levels and a high-mountain setting with no residential area. As in the other sectors, the resort indicates there is a beginners’ area; ask the school which one best suits your first day.
\n
\n
For an overview of the whole ski area, see our guide to ski slopes in Andorra. More than the sector itself, what matters on the first day is the distance between your accommodation, the school and the learning area: the less you walk in ski boots, the better. It is one of the advantages of staying at the foot of the slopes.
\n
The ski pass: a detail worth clarifying
\n
The beginner’s pass gives access to the beginners’ areas, the gondola in the sector you are in and some lifts in that area, but not those leading to higher-level slopes. It seems the natural choice, but it comes with an important caveat: the school does not accept it for its services. To take lessons you need a day pass, a multi-day pass, the season pass or the Plus+ pass.
\n
So if you are going to book an instructor, buy a pass that is valid for the school. Lesson prices do not include the pass or equipment, although combined packages are available. You will find more information in our guide to ski passes in Andorra.
\n
Equipment: comfort and fit
\n
Hire
\n
There is no point buying equipment on your first trip. Grandvalira works with partner shops where you can book in advance, with bronze, silver and gold ranges and the option of upgrading to higher-end equipment in store. For those seeking the very latest, its Premium programme also mentions rental of the newest models. Even if you are a beginner, what you want is not the most demanding ski but the one best suited to your level and weight: ask the shop technician.
\n
Boots come first
\n
A badly fitted boot can ruin the day. Take your time trying it on, with the technical sock you intend to wear, and walk in it before you leave the shop. It should hold your heel firmly without pressing on your toes. If it bothers you during your first run, go back to the shop: there is usually a solution.
\n
Clothing and accessories
\n
Dress in layers: a thermal layer, a mid-layer, and a waterproof jacket and trousers. Add a helmet, goggles, good-quality gloves and technical socks, never several pairs at once. The high-mountain sun is intense even in the cold, so do not forget sun protection. Our guide on what to pack for a ski trip will help you prepare your luggage with style.
\n
What to expect in the first few days
\n
Progress depends on practice and aptitude, but the school itself points out that, after a few hours of lessons, you can come down green and even blue runs with greater confidence. A typical sequence would be:
\n
\n
Day one: getting used to the equipment, moving around, braking and using the simplest lifts.
\n
Day two: linking turns on a green run, with greater control of your speed.
\n
Day three onwards: growing in confidence and, if your instructor thinks it appropriate, trying your first blue run.
\n
\n
For this reason, a stay of three days or more lets you truly enjoy your progress. Avoid pushing yourself: fatigue tends to lead to mistakes, and it is better to stop in good time.
\n
How to make your first trip more enjoyable
\n
\n
Choose your dates carefully. Beginners’ slopes are more pleasant with fewer people. Our guide on when to ski in Grandvalira will help you decide.
\n
Book lessons along with your accommodation. Especially at Christmas, Carnival and Easter.
\n
Make the most of your breaks. Grandvalira’s Mountain Club offers access to restaurants, terraces and VIP lounges, as well as lockers with boot warmers: check its terms if that level of service appeals.
\n
Plan your recovery. Your legs will welcome some rest at the end of the day. At Hotel Grau Roig, featured in the MICHELIN Guide, you can round off the day at the spa and ask the hotel about options with guides and instructors during your stay.
\n
If you are travelling as a family, combine this with our guide to skiing with children in Grandvalira.
\n
\n","categories":[{"id":"4d089d30-abfa-5272-9232-9f4608aab852","name":"ski","slug":"ski","parentElement":null}],"acf":{"subtitle":"Private lessons, well-fitted equipment and the best areas for your first turns in comfort","lead":"First time skiing in Andorra as an adult: private lessons, well-fitted equipment, the right ski pass and where to start in Grandvalira.","featuredMedia":null,"isFeatured":"no"}}},{"node":{"id":"c91fbe11-44e5-569c-823b-05d3d6c78ea3","path":"/en/christmas-new-year-skiing-grandvalira/","title":"Christmas and New Year skiing in Grandvalira: what to expect and when to book","date":"02 November 2026","content":"
Christmas in Grandvalira combines skiing, torchlight descents, children’s events and music on the mountain, and it is the most sought-after period of the whole winter. The 2026-27 season is scheduled from 4 December to 4 April, depending on the snow, so barring the unexpected these festivities will fall squarely within it. It is wise to book accommodation as early as possible and to check the official programme before finalising your plans.
\n
An important note: at the time of writing, we have not found the official Christmas 2026-27 programme in Grandvalira’s news section. What follows is based on what has happened in recent seasons and serves as guidance rather than a confirmed calendar.
\n
What kind of events usually take place at Christmas
\n
Torchlight and light descents
\n
These are the defining image of the season. At Christmas 2025-26, the announced programme included a torchlight descent in Soldeu on 31 December at 18:00 for advanced skiers, a children’s light descent in Soldeu on 3 January, and another torchlight descent in Pas de la Casa on 5 January, accompanied by a Three Kings parade and fireworks. The 2023-24 programme already followed a very similar pattern, which suggests a well-established tradition, although this year’s dates have yet to be confirmed.
\n
Santa Claus and children’s activities
\n
Last year, Santa Claus visited snow gardens and ski schools across the Grandvalira sectors on 24 December, and on 23 December Grau Roig hosted a Kids Fest with inflatables and DJs. If you are travelling with children, these events are an excellent complement to lessons. The resort’s children’s circuits, free for skiers up to the age of 12, also offer an activity that is easy to fit into any day.
\n
Music and après-ski atmosphere
\n
For adults, the programme has revolved around DJ sessions on terraces and the L’Abarset après-ski in El Tarter, which held a New Year party that lasted until 4 am and a Brunch Electronik. There were also special dinners on the mountain, with events such as the Jazz Leon Classic Nights at Wine & Meat by Jean Leon, in Soldeu. Places at occasions like these are limited: the jazz evening sold out.
\n
Skiing after five o’clock
\n
General slope hours run from 9:00 to 17:00, but there may be more options over the festive period. Last year, Tubs, in Pas de la Casa, stayed open until 20:00 from 26 December to 5 January, as announced by the resort.
\n
How busy it gets and how to plan
\n
Last season’s figures give a clear idea of the demand. Between 24 December 2025 and 6 January 2026, Andorra’s resorts exceeded 336,000 skier days, the best figure in six years. The peak day was 29 December, with 25,412 skiers in Grandvalira. Snow was good too, with an average of more than 190 km open, a figure that depends on each winter and cannot be taken for granted.
\n
In that context, a few simple decisions make all the difference:
\n
\n
Start early. The first hours of the day are the best for enjoying clear slopes and for crossing between sectors.
\n
Arrange your ski pass in advance. The Mobile Pass is activated from the official app and spares you the ticket office. You will find the details in our guide to ski passes in Andorra.
\n
Book anything with limited places. Ski school, special dinners and snow experiences should all be settled in good time.
\n
Choose your lunch hour carefully. Eating earlier or later helps you avoid the busiest moments on the mountain.
\n
\n
When to book and which dates to choose
\n
The festivities are concentrated in a few weeks and the most sought-after accommodation is the first to fill up. There is no general deadline: if your plans are settled, the most sensible course is to book as soon as you can, especially if you need several rooms or a stay that includes New Year’s Eve.
\n
19 to 24 December
\n
The French school holidays begin on 19 December, and the days before Christmas Eve are usually a good option for those who want a festive atmosphere ahead of the main festive dates. Christmas Day falls on a Friday, which may also attract long-weekend breaks.
\n
25 to 30 December
\n
This is the busiest week if last year is anything to go by, when the peak day came on the 29th. It is also a very attractive option for families, because children have more activities and the mood is very festive.
\n
New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day
\n
In 2026, New Year’s Eve falls on a Thursday and New Year’s Day on a Friday, so the holiday may stretch to Sunday 3 January. If you want to experience the torchlight descent and a special dinner, plan the day calmly: ski in the morning, keep the afternoon for rest and confirm both your table and any transport you need in advance.
\n
2 to 6 January
\n
The French holidays end on 4 January and, traditionally, Epiphany closes the period for Spanish families. If you are interested in the Pas de la Casa parade, check whether it is being repeated this year. From 7 January the crowds clearly thin; you will find more detail in our guide on when to ski in Grandvalira.
\n
Ideas to round off the break
\n
For those who do not ski every day
\n
The resort’s 2026-27 experiences include snowmobiles, dog sledding and snowshoeing in several sectors, as well as the Màgic Gliss and the zip wire in Canillo. These activities combine very well with ski days, weather permitting.
\n
Away from the snow
\n
If you fancy a change of scene one day, Caldea is one of the country’s classic visits, and our guide to things to do in Andorra gathers further ideas for those days. For couples, you may also find inspiration in our suggested romantic break in Andorra.
\n
Choosing a base for these dates
\n
At Christmas the criteria shift a little: the greater the crowds, the more valuable it is to stay close to the snow and not depend on the car. If the New Year’s Eve events are the centre of your trip, bear in mind where they have been held in previous editions: Soldeu for the descent on the 31st and Pas de la Casa for the one on 5 January. If you are looking for peace, a sector with no town centre will let you enjoy the festivities differently. Our guide on where to stay in Grandvalira will help you decide.
\n
Hotel Grau Roig, featured in the MICHELIN Guide, stands in the heart of the Grau Roig sector, with a spa and several restaurants. To find out about availability on these dates and whether any special offer is planned, it is best to ask the hotel directly.
\n
Finally, before travelling, check the slope conditions and the resort’s final programme. It is also worth remembering that the L’Illa Carlemany stand closes on 25 December and 1 January, and that all mountain activities may change according to the weather.
\n","categories":[{"id":"4d089d30-abfa-5272-9232-9f4608aab852","name":"ski","slug":"ski","parentElement":null}],"acf":{"subtitle":"Torchlight descents, family events and crowds, to plan the key dates with care","lead":"Christmas in Grandvalira: the events usually held, the crowds to expect, which dates to choose and when to book for New Year and Epiphany skiing.","featuredMedia":null,"isFeatured":"no"}}},{"node":{"id":"8f8f3f5a-f32b-5ffd-bee2-86bf44aa9526","path":"/en/ski-world-cup-soldeu-march-2027/","title":"Women’s Ski World Cup in Soldeu, March 2027: a guide to seeing it live","date":"02 November 2026","content":"
The women’s Alpine Ski World Cup returns to Soldeu on 6 and 7 March 2027, with a giant slalom on Saturday and a slalom on Sunday on the Avet slope. The official programme sets the two runs of each day at 9:30 and 12:30. Public access conditions and transport arrangements have not been published so far, so this guide separates what is confirmed from what is worth checking before you travel.
\n
What we know about the 2027 Soldeu World Cup
\n
\n
Competition: FIS women’s Alpine Ski World Cup.
\n
Saturday 6 March: giant slalom. First run at 9:30 and second at 12:30.
\n
Sunday 7 March: slalom. First run at 9:30 and second at 12:30.
\n
Venue: Avet slope, Soldeu sector, Grandvalira.
\n
\n
FIS added Andorra to the calendar at its spring meeting in Portorož and, in July 2026, its technical staff inspected the Avet with the organising committee to approve the start points and race operations. Times may change according to the weather and the jury’s decisions, as is usual at these events, so check the programme a few days beforehand.
\n
Why it is worth the trip: the Avet slope
\n
According to Nevasport, this will be Andorra’s seventh World Cup event, after those of 2012, 2016, 2019, 2023, 2024 and 2026. Soldeu has become such a regular fixture that David Hidalgo, head of the organising committee, describes it as an almost permanent venue on the circuit. The Avet hosted the first race, in 2012, and was part of the 2019 and 2023 Finals.
\n
Nevasport’s profile describes it as a black run with a vertical drop of about 416 metres, between 1,850 and 2,266 metres of altitude, an average gradient of 37% and two pronounced steep pitches separated by a gentler section. Its north-west orientation tends to leave the snow hard in the morning. The terrain is made for the technical disciplines, and much of the course can be seen from the village itself, an obvious advantage for spectators.
\n
How to enjoy each race
\n
In the giant slalom, skiers carve wider turns at greater speed: watch how they handle the change of rhythm between the steep pitches. The slalom, with its tighter gates, is a test of precision and reflexes, and it is often at its most thrilling when watched at close quarters. As both events have two runs, the excitement builds in the second, when the start order and combined times decide the standings.
\n
Carles Visa, manager of the Andorran Ski Federation, named Carla Mijares, Iria Medina and Claudia García as skiers for local fans to follow. The final list of participants will be known closer to the event.
\n
Tickets and public access
\n
For now, the official site gives no details of tickets, spectator areas or hospitality services. For these matters, it refers visitors to a contact form. Until there is official information, it is best not to assume whether access will be free or paid, or whether there will be reserved areas.
\n
Check the event website regularly and sign up to Grandvalira’s channels for updates. If you are travelling with a group, write to the organisers well in advance.
\n
How to reach Soldeu on race day
\n
The 2027 arrangements have not yet been published. A useful pointer is what the organisers did at the 2024 edition: they recommended public transport, advised those coming by car to leave it in El Tarter and laid on a free bus over the race weekend. There is no guarantee this will be repeated, but it does suggest that car access to Soldeu will be restricted.
\n
The times published on that same page are for guidance:
\n
\n
From Andorra la Vella: about 19 km on the CG-2, around 26 minutes.
\n
From Pas de la Casa: around 20 minutes.
\n
From the Envalira Tunnel exit, next to Grau Roig: around 15 minutes.
\n
\n
On a March weekend with racing, expect considerably more traffic. Leave early, especially if you want to see the first run, and check mobilitat.ad and our guide to road conditions in Andorra. If you are coming from abroad, see also the airports near Andorra and your transfer options.
\n
Arriving on skis
\n
All of Grandvalira’s sectors are connected, so in principle you can reach Soldeu on skis. It is an appealing idea if you are staying in another sector, although it depends on the state of the ski area that day and any restrictions the race imposes. Allow plenty of time and confirm which slopes and lifts are open in the morning. Do not assume that the Avet or its surroundings will be available for skiing during the event.
\n
How to plan the weekend
\n
Book early
\n
The races fall in the middle of the season, on a weekend that will draw teams, press and fans. It is best to arrange accommodation and transfers as far ahead as possible, on flexible terms while not all the details are known.
\n
Stay a few extra days
\n
The second run starts at 12:30, which leaves much of the afternoon free. Ideally, arrive on the Thursday or Friday, ski before the races and leave on the Monday, once the departing traffic has eased. Grandvalira has 215 km and 140 slopes, so there is plenty of terrain away from the competition area. You can read more in our guide to ski slopes in Andorra.
\n
Dress warmly for spectating
\n
Watching a race calls for warmer clothing than skiing. Bring thermal layers, boots with good grip, gloves, sunglasses and sun protection. March in the Pyrenees can bring either intense sun or a storm, and you will spend hours on your feet on the snow.
\n
A race weekend from Grau Roig
\n
Grau Roig is about 15 minutes by car from Soldeu, and that distance has its appeal: the calm of a setting without a residential area after a lively day in Soldeu. Hotel Grau Roig, featured in the MICHELIN Guide, is located right in the resort, and you can ask its team about transfer options for the weekend. In the evening, you can look forward to an unhurried dinner at its restaurants, or a session at the spa to warm up after the day.
\n
If you would like to build on your plans, read our guide to elite sporting events in Andorra. And to decide whether to combine the race with a few more days of skiing, see when to ski in Grandvalira.
\n","categories":[{"id":"4d089d30-abfa-5272-9232-9f4608aab852","name":"ski","slug":"ski","parentElement":null}],"acf":{"subtitle":"Dates, times, the Avet slope and how to plan the weekend of 6 and 7 March","lead":"Ski World Cup Soldeu 2027: women's giant slalom and slalom on 6 and 7 March on the Avet. It is the place to be if you want to ski surrounded by scenery, with the whole ski area within reach and no village in between.
\n
The resort itself presents it as the most unspoilt sector in Grandvalira. This guide brings together what you need to know to prepare your days here: the terrain, what to do besides skiing and how to get around. If you are comparing it with other areas, see also our guide on where to stay in Grandvalira.
\n
What the Grau Roig sector is like
\n
The sector lies at around 2,100 metres and opens out between broad slopes, with the surroundings of the Pessons lakes among its most recognisable landscapes. With no town here, the experience differs from that of other parts of the resort: the rhythm is set by the snow and the light, not by traffic or shop hours.
\n
It forms part of a ski area of 215 km and 140 runs, so you can devote the day to its slopes or link up with the neighbouring sectors. The exact numbers of runs and lifts can vary from one season to the next, so it is best to check them on the official map and the slope status page.
\n
Where to ski in Grau Roig
\n
Runs for every level
\n
The resort states that there are runs for all levels here, which allows a group with differing experience to share the day without drifting too far apart. Data published in 2023 showed a mix of green, blue, red and black runs, with a green run in the Pessons area. Before choosing your route, check the current map to see which runs suit your level. For an overview of the whole area, see our guide to the ski slopes in Andorra.
\n
Speed Skiing: the Kilómetro Lanzado
\n
The Riberal piste is the venue for the FIS Speed Skiing World Cup, known in Spanish as Kilómetro Lanzado, a discipline in which skiers seek maximum straight-line speed. According to figures published in 2023, it is about 900 metres long with a 200-metre vertical drop. We have not yet been able to confirm any events or dates for 2026-27, so if you are interested in attending, check the official calendar before you travel.
\n
Freeride and ski touring
\n
Grau Roig has freeride areas and three marked ski-touring circuits. The circuits are an excellent way into ski touring on a marked route, while freeride demands training, safety equipment and a careful reading of snow conditions. Before leaving the marked runs, check the avalanche bulletin. The hotel’s website mentions guides and instructors, an option you can enquire about directly with the team.
\n
Snowpark
\n
This is one of the resort’s three sectors with a snowpark: the Sunrise Park Xavi. It is a good plan for those looking for something beyond classic descents, and also a splendid distraction for teenagers with some ability.
\n
Grau Roig with the family
\n
Children have Kids Forest, a circuit with obstacles and themed characters designed to improve turning and balance. The resort’s children’s circuits are free and open to skiers up to the age of 12. Its four characters, from Mona the marmot to Nae the chamois, represent different levels of progress, making for an entertaining way of measuring improvement.
\n
If you are travelling with younger children, you might consider the Imaginarium Ski School, which is listed among the hotel’s snow options, and the hotel’s Kids Club for the hours away from the slopes.
\n
What to do besides skiing
\n
The resort’s 2026-27 experiences programme includes several activities in Grau Roig:
\n
\n
Snowmobiles, to explore the landscape in a different way.
\n
Mushing, on a sled pulled by dogs.
\n
Snowshoeing, a peaceful option that also suits non-skiers.
\n
Packs combining several activities.
\n
\n
These activities usually depend on the weather and the state of the snow. Check availability in advance, especially on key dates. The hotel’s snow activities page also lists them, so you can ask for information there.
\n
Where to eat on the mountain
\n
The sector’s official page highlights the Llac de Pessons restaurant, by the lake, a highly recommended stop for a break with a view. On very busy days it is wise to book ahead. The choice of other establishments on the slopes may vary from one season to another, so it is worth confirming it on the resort’s website.
\n
At the end of the day, the restaurants at Hotel Grau Roig, among them La Vaquería, El Teatro del Vino and La Marmita, offer an alternative that requires no travel at all. The wine cellar holds more than 300 labels.
\n
Getting there and getting around
\n
Road access
\n
From Andorra la Vella it is about 25 km along the CG-2, a little over 30 minutes in normal conditions. From the French border, you arrive via the Envalira tunnel area, with Pas de la Casa as the first sector along the way. In winter, always check the road conditions and carry the appropriate equipment.
\n
The sector has a car park and, as the resort points out, you can practically ski straight from it. If you would rather not drive, the hotel mentions private chauffeured transfers on its location page, which you can ask about when booking.
\n
Links with other sectors
\n
From Grau Roig you can ski towards Pas de la Casa as well as towards Soldeu and the rest of the ski area. Bear in mind that a queue can form by mid-morning at the chairlift linking Grau Roig with Soldeu, so if you plan to cross, it is best to do so early. Allow plenty of time for the return too, because the slopes generally close at 17:00.
\n
Staying in the sector itself
\n
Staying in Grau Roig means starting the day on the snow, with no journeys or waiting to park, and enjoying the mountain once the day visitors have gone. Hotel Grau Roig, featured in the MICHELIN Guide, stands in the sector and offers rooms and a spa to unwind in after skiing.
\n
If you are still deciding on dates, bear in mind that Grandvalira’s 2026-27 season is scheduled from 4 December 2026 to 4 April 2027, depending on the
