What is documented is more interesting. During the Second World War, Andorra was neutral territory and a transit point for several escape lines, the networks that got Allied airmen, refugees and people under persecution out of occupied France and towards Spain.
\n
The escape lines that passed through Andorra
\n
According to the British association dedicated to the history of the escape lines, Andorran routes were used by the Pat O’Leary, Dutch-Paris, François and Marie-Claire lines. Once the low coastal routes through the Pyrenees had been compromised, the networks moved inland to high passes that were harder to watch.
\n
Why the destination changed
\n
The case of Dutch-Paris explains it well. It first crossed into Switzerland, but anyone interned there stayed until the end of the war. So it changed direction: Toulouse, Saint-Girons, Foix and, frequently, Andorra.
\n
Not an Andorran resistance
\n
The idea of an organised “Andorran resistance” also needs qualifying. The sources describe Andorra as neutral, intermediate territory rather than a fighting front. The guides on these routes were mostly Spanish and often smugglers.
\n
Andorra’s key role during the war
\n
A neutral country high in the mountains, between occupied France and Spain, became a place full of watching eyes. The source describes it as monitored by spies and agents from every country at war, each keeping tabs on the others.
\n
The men who organised the crossings
\n
Francesc Viadiu, recruited in Montpellier by a British agent known as “Mr Miller”, organised guides for the evaders. Joaquim Baldrich, a mountain guide and smuggler in his twenties, helped several hundred refugees reach Spain. They knew these passes for a reason: the same trade described in the smugglers’ legacy in Andorra.
\n
The Hotel Mirador
\n
Many clandestine meetings reportedly took place at the Hotel Mirador, where everyone was watching everyone else.
\n
Radio Andorra
\n
The station was powerful, broadcast across Europe and aimed to stay neutral. The Germans tried to buy or manipulate it for propaganda and failed, although they did gain access to Radio Monte Carlo. Refugees are also said to have sent coded messages to relatives in France through song dedications.
\n
Landmarks of the freedom route in Andorra
\n
Rather than a single path, this was a chain of stages. Many of them lie outside the country, and following them helps you grasp the true scale of the journey.
\n
Before arriving: Toulouse and Ussat-les-Bains
\n
Toulouse was a major gathering point. Many fugitives stopped at the Hotel de Paris, run by the Montgelards. The couple were captured and deported, and only she returned. Many routes began at Ussat-les-Bains.
\n
The crossing
\n
Getting from France to Andorra took between three and seven days depending on the weather. Without a moon, nights in the mountains were pitch black. The hidden refuges and specific paths are not identified in the sources consulted, so do not trust anyone who points one out as “the real one” without documentation.
\n
After Andorra: Manresa and Barcelona
\n
From Andorra there were several more days on foot to Manresa and then a train to Barcelona. There, the evaders were helped by the British consul and vice-consul, and the journey continued to Lisbon or Gibraltar. Those arriving with frostbite were treated by Dr Trias and then taken to a British-American hospital in Madrid and the British Embassy.
\n
A place you can visit
\n
The site with the most direct link that you can visit today is the Museu del Tabac, in the former Reig factory in Sant Julià de Lòria, which operated from 1909 to 1957. It has displays on the smuggling of tobacco, cigars and cigarettes, the trade that produced many of these guides. In those years, crews crossed the mountains with loads of up to 30 kilos and France wanted more and more wool, with Andorrans as middlemen. That knowledge of the passes is what made it possible to get so many people out this way. Check opening times before you go.
\n
How to commemorate this history today
\n
You do not need a guided tour to get close to this episode. You can do it on your own, with some reading and a pair of boots.
\n
In summer and autumn
\n
Walking is the best way to understand what crossing these mountains meant. The Madriu valley or the Pessons lakes, whose route starts at El Cubil in Grau Roig, give you the measure of the terrain, and there are more ideas among the hiking routes in Andorra. None of them is a documented escape route, but they are the same kind of high mountain country. If old paths interest you, have a look at the Camí Ral route as well.
\n
In winter
\n
Cold and snow were part of the risk. Today, in season, you can head out on snowshoes from Grau Roig with a level of safety they never had, and understand why frostbite was such a serious problem. It is also the hotel’s high season, with access to the Grandvalira slopes.
\n
Where to stay
\n
Hotel Grau Roig, listed in the MICHELIN Guide, makes a good base for getting around the mountains. Back at the hotel you have the spa with its heated pool and several dining options: La Vaquería, El Teatro del Vino, La Marmita, La Fromagerie and Secret Room.
\n","categories":[{"id":"0e8c2633-22cd-52a4-8bfe-e028a5ba997f","name":"Culture","slug":"culture","parentElement":null},{"id":"425a3962-c27d-569c-ae7b-a85f0e6bb381","name":"Adventure","slug":"adventure","parentElement":null}],"acf":{"subtitle":"Andorra, neutral territory between occupied France and Spain","lead":"Freedom route in Andorra: the real Second World War escape lines, their guides, Radio Andorra and how to get close to that history today.","featuredMedia":null,"isFeatured":"no"}}},{"node":{"id":"4cdd2f62-f7ef-5f50-996d-23cf877fc216","path":"/en/smugglers-andorra-routes-legends/","title":"Smugglers in Andorra: routes and legends","date":"02 November 2026","content":"
The origins of smuggling in Andorra: history and context
\n
Andorra sits between two borders and, for a long time, that was its greatest commercial advantage. Whatever was scarce or expensive on one side could be sold on the other, and in between lay mountains that could only be crossed on foot or with mules. Smuggling was no romantic adventure. It was hard, genuinely risky work that fed many families on both sides of the Pyrenees.
\n
The best-documented period is the years after the Spanish Civil War. Food, medicine and industrial goods were in short supply, and smuggling became one of the main ways to get hold of them. During the Second World War, France also wanted more and more wool, and Andorrans acted as middlemen, which encouraged more smuggling crews to form.
\n
Wool on the way out, tobacco on the way back
\n
The business was simple. Crews bought wool from farmers and shepherds for around 15 to 18 pesetas a kilo and sold it in Andorra for 40 to 50. With that money they loaded up on whatever was worth something in Spain: packs of tobacco, loose tobacco in half-kilo lots, cigarette papers from the Reig factory in Sant Julià de Lòria and perfume essences. Anisette and tins of sardines also changed hands.
\n
Some exchanges were more unusual. People from Sant Llorenç de Morunys swapped wooden barrels made from black pine heartwood for tobacco. Andorrans prized them for storing water.
\n
Who has told the story
\n
Much of what we know comes from the historian Josep Albert Planes i Ball, who carried out fieldwork between 2006 and 2009 and published El contraban de frontera al Pirineu català in 2011. It is the book to read if your interest goes beyond the anecdotes.
\n
The main smuggling routes in Andorra: a detailed look
\n
There was no official route, of course. Each crew used the passes it knew, depending on where it set out from and who it had to hide from. These are some of the journeys recorded in the sources.
\n
From Odèn to Andorra
\n
Crews from Odèn, in the Solsonès area, took about seven days to get there and back. They reached Andorra in around three, sold the wool, bought tobacco, slept at the Hotel Pol and set off home the following day. Loads could reach 30 kilos, carried over long and difficult terrain.
\n
The Port de Perafita
\n
This historic pass between the Cerdanya and Andorra was used by smugglers from Arànser. Today it is one of the names you will come across most often if you walk through the Madriu valley, one of the best ways to get a feel for the ground they covered.
\n
From the Alt Urgell and the Solsonès
\n
Smugglers from Sort left from the hermitage of Santa Magdalena, in the Alt Urgell, on their way to Andorra. Those from Sant Llorenç de Morunys went via Tuixén and Cornellana.
\n
By bus, too
\n
Not everything travelled on people’s backs. Olive oil travelled on the La Seu d’Urgell bus line, with bottles and flagons hidden in mail sacks. Those sacks could not be searched without a special court order, which made them awkward to inspect. Drivers, ticket inspectors and railway staff helped out in exchange for gifts.
\n
The legends linked to smuggling in Andorra
\n
With this subject it pays to separate what is documented from what gets embellished over dinner. Many of the stories in circulation come without names or dates. The ones below have something to back them up.
\n
The paquetaires and the Guardia Civil
\n
The porters were known as paquetaires, and crews could number up to fifteen people. Some carried weapons, and there were clashes with the Guardia Civil. But the picture of constant pursuit is incomplete: many border guards were more interested in keeping the bundles for themselves than in enforcing the law, and bribes and gifts were common. Smugglers often got away simply by dropping their load.
\n
From smugglers to escape guides
\n
Anyone who knew these passes became hugely valuable during the Second World War. Most guides on the escape routes through Andorra were Spanish and often smugglers. The most frequently cited is Joaquim Baldrich, a mountain guide and smuggler in his twenties, who helped several hundred refugees reach Spain. We cover this in Andorra’s escape lines.
\n
The mystery of Tor
\n
On the far side of the Port de Cabús, the village of Tor carries a dark history of its own. The dispute over its mountain has been linked to as many as three murders, and Josep Montané, known as “Sansa”, was found dead on 30 July 1995 in a case that remains unsolved. It is the story that hangs over the smugglers’ route by 4×4.
\n
The impact of smuggling on Andorra’s culture and economy
\n
The money made a difference. A single trip could pay a good deal more than a day’s work on the land or in the mines, which is why so many people took it on despite the effort.
\n
Tobacco as an industry
\n
The best place to understand this is the Museu del Tabac, in the former Reig factory in Sant Julià de Lòria, which operated from 1909 to 1957. It is not a smuggling museum. It explains how the leaf was grown, fermented, cut and dried, and shows the cigarette and cigar workshops and the factory offices. It does, however, have displays on the smuggling of tobacco, cigars and cigarettes, as part of a wider account of tobacco’s weight in Andorra’s economy and society.
\n
From local trade to organised networks
\n
A former smuggler, interviewed under a pseudonym by the Andorran outlet Alto, describes a trade with its own codes, whose profits reached the country’s shops, restaurants and mechanics. According to his account, large operators using shipping containers moved in during the 1990s, and anti-fraud laws arrived in 1999. It is one man’s version, but it helps to explain how the change was felt.
\n
A story still unfolding
\n
Smuggling is not just a thing of the past. In 2026, Andorran and French authorities, under Eurojust oversight, dismantled a network that had moved around a million euros’ worth of tobacco. Those arrested included the owner of a shop in Pas de la Casa. Investigators seized 6,250 packets, 70,000 euros in cash and five vehicles. That is reason enough to read up on the limits for buying tobacco in Andorra before you head home.
\n
Tips for exploring Andorra’s smuggling routes today
\n
There is no waymarked smugglers’ route, so be wary of anyone selling you one as such. What you can do is combine real places with mountain paths.
\n
What to do in summer
\n
\n
Visit the Museu del Tabac in Sant Julià de Lòria. Check opening times before you go.
\n
Walk the Madriu valley or pick another of the hiking routes in Andorra to suit your level. These are high-mountain walks, so bring water and warm clothing and check the forecast.
\n
4×4 routes are listed among the hotel’s summer activities. Take care with Tor: the owners of the mountain restrict visitor access via the Port de Cabús, and the private stretch between the pass and the village is reserved for residents.
\n
\n
What to do in winter
\n
The high passes lie under snow and the Port de Cabús is normally open only from May to October, so these routes are not for this time of year. But winter is the high season at Grau Roig. You can ski the Grandvalira slopes in the morning, head out on snowshoes to experience what it is like to move through these mountains in the cold, and spend an afternoon at the museum.
\n
Where to rest afterwards
\n
Hotel Grau Roig stands in the Grau Roig sector of Grandvalira and is listed in the MICHELIN Guide. Back at the hotel you have a spa with a heated pool, along with market cuisine at La Marmita, mountain fare at La Vaquería and fondues and raclettes at La Fromagerie. You travel through the forests of Grau Roig on a sled pulled by Nordic breeds (husky, Samoyed or Alaskan malamute) and, if you like, you can feel like a musher for a day by driving along snowy tracks yourself. Here we focus on the essentials: which format to choose, what age is required and how to fit it into your trip. If you first want to know how the activity works and how the dogs do their job, see our guide to what mushing in Andorra is.
\n
Which format to choose
\n
The main decision is whether you ride as a passenger or drive. The operator RocRoi, based in Grau Roig, lists these options:
\n
\n
Passenger ride: 2, 3 or 5 km, with a professional musher in charge of the sled. This is the best choice with children or for a first outing.
\n
Driving: 2 km, after instructions and with the musher nearby. Monday to Friday only.
\n
Night ride: 5 km, or 10 km with dinner included.
\n
Combination: 2 km of mushing with 30 or 60 minutes of snowmobiling, around an hour and a half to two hours in total for the shorter version.
\n
Multi-adventure day: a day with several snow activities, including 1 km by sled. Visit Andorra describes a Premium Adult pass of this kind.
\n
\n
A tip to help you decide
\n
If it is your first outing and you are unsure between 2 and 5 km, think about the cold rather than the distance. As a passenger you barely move, so a short trip may be enough with young children. Longer routes and night outings are best enjoyed well wrapped up and without rushing.
\n
Ages and requirements
\n
Children
\n
On most RocRoi rides, the minimum age is 3 with an adult. On some combinations it rises to about 5 or 6, so check the specific option.
\n
To drive the sled
\n
RocRoi sets a minimum age of 18 for the outing where you drive. As conditions may vary by operator and season, always confirm before you book.
\n
How many people per sled
\n
It depends on weight and fitness: RocRoi states 1 to 3 people per sled, with combinations such as two adults and a child aged 3 to 8, or one adult and two small children. If there are more of you, you will need to divide into several sleds, so mention it when you book.
\n
Season and what to expect
\n
This is a winter activity and it depends on the snow. The ski season in Andorra usually runs from November to April, and specific dates appear in the operator’s calendar. Places are limited in high season, so it is advisable to book ahead. The route may change or the outing may be postponed because of the weather or snow conditions.
\n
At the end of most outings you can get close to the dogs, pet them and take photos.
\n
What to bring
\n
Ski or winter clothing, ski gloves, sunglasses or goggles, sunscreen and snow or walking boots. For night outings, add extra warm layers, a hat and a neck gaiter.
\n
What is included
\n
According to RocRoi, professional guides or mushers, parking and third-party liability insurance are included. Accident insurance is bought separately at the centre. The meeting point is next to the Cubil car park, in a beige yurt with a white flag.
\n
How to book and plan the day
\n
Just tell us you would like an outing during the days you are staying at Hotel Grau Roig, listed in the MICHELIN Guide, and we will help you find the best combination of times. In Grau Roig you can head out by day or by night, get a close look at Pyrenean flora and fauna in winter and relax to the sounds of the forest. This page helps you decide: guided outing or on your own, what level you need and how to book. If you are looking for specific routes, they are in our guide to snowshoe routes in Andorra.
\n
Guided outing or on your own?
\n
With a guide
\n
This is the simplest choice if you don’t know the area or it is your first time. In Grau Roig, RocRoi lists a 3-hour guided excursion, a 5-hour half-day outing and a 2-hour night walk with dinner in the mountains. The operator states that its guided outings include equipment. Activity portals such as Picuco also describe walks of around 2 hours in Grandvalira, of low to medium difficulty.
\n
On your own
\n
If you already have experience, you can hire snowshoes: RocRoi offers 2-hour and 5-hour rental in Grau Roig. Picuco cites up to 23 km of marked routes in Grandvalira, with elevation gains of up to 850 m, in areas such as Comellar Llarg or Estany de les Abelletes. Going without a guide means knowing how to read the terrain and the forecast, so choose a route within your ability.
\n
As part of an activity day
\n
According to Visit Andorra, Grandvalira’s Gold and Premium day passes include marked snowshoe trails among other activities. It is a good option if you would like to try several snow activities.
\n
What level and age you need
\n
There are routes of varying difficulty, with options for all levels of ability and fitness. Walking in snowshoes is quick to learn, but more demanding than it looks, so choose by elevation gain and time, not just kilometres.
\n
Picuco recommends this type of walk for families with children aged 6 and over. It is not advised for people with reduced mobility or without suitable snow clothing. If you have younger children, ask when you book.
\n
Season and safety
\n
Snowshoeing is possible while there is enough snow, and the winter season in Andorra usually runs from November to April. Specific dates and the route of each outing depend on the weather and the operator, so book in advance, especially for Christmas, Easter and weekends.
\n
Before you set off
\n
\n
Check the forecast at meteo.ad and the avalanche bulletin from Andorra’s weather service, especially if you are on your own. The risk can vary widely with altitude and slope.
\n
Don’t set out in bad weather. If the forecast worsens, change your route or your day.
\n
Tell someone your route and when you expect to be back.
\n
If you don’t know the area, go with a guide. Finding your way on a snow-covered mountain is very different from doing so in summer.
\n
\n
What to bring
\n
Warm snow clothing, waterproof walking boots or après-ski boots, gloves and sunglasses or goggles. Add water and sunscreen. At night, wear extra layers: the cold is very noticeable when you stop.
\n
A way to walk the old paths
\n
Snowshoes let you move as the inhabitants of these mountains once did in winter, at your own pace and with no engine noise. If you enjoy it, you can go further with a route to the Pessons lakes, which you can reach from the same sector, or a night of stargazing.
\n
How to book
\n
Book your snowshoe outing for the days of your stay at Hotel Grau Roig, listed in the MICHELIN Guide. Snowy forests, a guide leading the way and the option of driving yourself: no skiing experience is required. This page brings together everything you need to book with confidence: requirements, season, what to bring and what happens if the weather changes. If you would rather compare routes, we go into detail in our guide to snowmobile routes around Grau Roig.
\n
Who can get on a snowmobile
\n
Snow activities differ by age, so it is worth checking before you book. Conditions depend on the operator and the type of outing.
\n
To drive
\n
The operator RocRoi, which operates in Grau Roig, sets the minimum driving age at 18 and does not require previous experience. Its general page states that at that age you can drive the snowmobile without a driving licence. If you book with another company, confirm this point when you reserve. Visit Andorra also presents the activity as aimed at over-18s.
\n
To ride as a passenger
\n
Younger children can enjoy the experience too, always with an adult. RocRoi accepts passengers from age 5; Visit Andorra mentions 10-minute children’s rides from age 6. The figure varies with the type of outing, so ask about your child’s exact age.
\n
For children who want to drive
\n
There is a mini circuit for children aged 3 to 11, who ride on their own, in the Kids Forest area of Grau Roig. It pairs well with a day at the children’s ski school.
\n
What exactly you are booking
\n
In Andorra, the mountain resorts law limits motorised traffic on the ski area in winter to activities run by the resort or its concessionaires. In practice, you always head out on an organised activity along an authorised route.
\n
Options range from 15 minutes on a double snowmobile to 2 hours, with outings by day, at sunset and at night. Night rides suit anyone who wants to see the mountain differently, under clear skies or a full moon when conditions allow: according to RocRoi, sunset rides start around 17:30-18:00 and night departures between 18:00 and 20:00, depending on the season and the snow.
\n
What is usually included
\n
RocRoi includes a qualified guide, helmet, parking and third-party liability insurance. Accident insurance is bought separately at the centre. If you book a different option or use another operator, check these conditions.
\n
Season and bad weather
\n
This is a winter activity and it depends on the snow. The ski season in Andorra usually runs from November to April, although the dates of each outing are shown in the operator’s calendar. Book ahead for Christmas, Easter and weekends.
\n
Outings can be changed or postponed for safety reasons in bad weather or when snow is scarce. With RocRoi, cancellation with a full refund is possible up to 5 days in advance, and up to 48 hours in advance you can change the date or request a voucher. If you are driving here, check the road conditions first.
\n
What to bring and where it is
\n
Wear ski or winter clothing, ski gloves, goggles or sunglasses and snow or walking boots. On daytime outings, add sunscreen.
\n
If you book with RocRoi, the meeting point is its activity centre in Grau Roig: park at the Cubil car park and look for the beige yurt, where you check in. You are asked to arrive 15 minutes before departure.
\n
How to book from the hotel
\n
Let us know when you arrange your stay at Hotel Grau Roig, listed in the MICHELIN Guide, and we will look for the best time slot for you. And if you want to experience that nature at close quarters, one of the most stimulating options is the via ferratas of Andorra.
\n
What exactly is a via ferrata?
\n
These are equipped routes that travel across the mountain itself, not along roads or footpaths, but up its rock faces. You move along clipped to a safety cable, using holds fixed to the rock. It may sound reckless, but with the right equipment and a well-chosen route it is a very rewarding activity.
\n
Via ferratas in Andorra can be done with friends or family, and there are options for beginners, although some require experience. Check the level of each route before choosing. Difficulty is usually shown on the K scale: K2 is easy, K3 moderate and K4 difficult.
\n
Bear the height in mind. These routes offer extraordinary bird’s-eye views, but the exposure is considerable, so they are not the best choice if you suffer badly from vertigo. If you have mild vertigo and are keen to see the mountains, start with a beginners’ route and a guide.
\n
The equipment you need includes a helmet, a harness with adjustable leg loops, an energy absorber (compulsory), two slings plus a third for resting, a figure-of-eight and rope for the abseil back, gloves and comfortable shoes with thick, non-slip soles.
\n
The via ferratas of Andorra
\n
Andorra’s mountains have more than ten via ferratas at all levels. In total there are 14 routes plus 2 cable routes. You can choose between short beginners’ routes and others of about 400 metres for people with experience.
\n
I am going to show you some of them in detail so that, with all the information in front of you, you can choose the best one for you. Grades, times and height gains are approximate, unless stated otherwise. Confirm them before setting out.
\n
Routes in Canillo
\n
Canillo is one of the areas with the most via ferratas in Andorra. It is a perfect setting for spending the day surrounded by nature. These are some of the most notable routes:
\n
1. Canal de la Mora
\n
K2, of low difficulty, with about 75 minutes on the route and 200 metres of height gain. It is a good choice if you want to get started in this activity.
\n
2. Roc del Quer (La Directíssima)
\n
K3, moderate, with about 90 minutes on the route and 350 metres of height gain. I recommend it for people who have already done a via ferrata, because it is higher and longer.
\n
3. Racons
\n
Visit Andorra rates it as difficult and for experts only: about 400 metres, with 210 metres of height gain and between 3 and 6 hours in total. It has a very vertical wall, overhanging sections and no emergency exits, so do not choose it as your first route. It is graded K4.
\n
4. Canal del Grau and Roc del Gos
\n
Also in Canillo, these are for people with experience. Canal del Grau is K3, with 60 minutes and 90 metres of height gain. Roc del Gos is K4+, the hardest on the list: short but intense, with exposed moves.
\n
Routes in Encamp
\n
This is another of my favourite areas for this activity, because it has routes for very different levels. It is also the parish of Hotel Grau Roig, which is listed in the MICHELIN Guide. The most notable via ferratas in Encamp include:
\n
1. Clots de l’Aspra
\n
K2, perfect for beginners. It takes about 30 minutes on the route with 70 metres of height gain, an ideal way to try it out if you do not have much experience.
\n
2. Bony d’Envalira
\n
This route is rated moderate, K3, with 90 minutes on the route and 200 metres of height gain. It is the most alpine, as it finishes on the summit, at 2,685 metres. If you are physically fit and like a challenge, it comes highly recommended.
\n
Other via ferratas
\n
Although these two areas are the best known, there are routes elsewhere in the country:
\n
\n
Ordino: Creu de Noral (K2, easy, 90 minutes) and Segudet (K2, moderate, 90 minutes).
\n
La Massana: Roc de Coma d’Erts (K2, moderate, 100 minutes and 200 metres of height gain). Not recommended in winter.
\n
Santa Coloma: Sant Vicenç d’Enclar (K3, moderate, 60 minutes and 190 metres of height gain), very close to the chapel of the same name.
\n
Escaldes-Engordany: Roc d’Esquers (K3, moderate, 100 minutes and 250 metres of height gain).
\n
Pas de la Casa: Coll dels Isards (K2, moderate, 60 minutes).
\n
Sant Julià de Lòria: Tossal Gran d’Aixovall (K3, 30 minutes and 40 metres of height gain), a good option for beginners.
\n
\n
How to get organised
\n
Always do these routes with someone else and use all the safety systems. If you have neither experience nor equipment, go with a guide. The hotel includes via ferrata among its mountain activities, and you can check availability directly with the hotel team.
\n
To find out about other options this season, see also our guides to hiking routes, climbing in Andorra and summer activities in Grandvalira.
\n
And in winter
\n
If you come at the height of the snow season, swap the rock face for the piste. From Grau Roig you have the Grandvalira ski slopes, and the hotel also lists snowshoeing, mushing, snowmobiling and ski touring.
\n","categories":[{"id":"425a3962-c27d-569c-ae7b-a85f0e6bb381","name":"Adventure","slug":"adventure","parentElement":null}],"acf":{"subtitle":"Andorra, spectacular in every season.","lead":"Via ferratas in Andorra: levels, times and height gains for routes in Canillo, Encamp and other parishes, with options for beginners.","featuredMedia":{"altText":"","sourceUrl":"https://admin.hotelgrauroig.com/content/uploads/2019/09/via-ferrata-andorra.jpg","localFile":{"childImageSharp":{"croppedSizes":{"aspectRatio":1.3274336283185841,"src":"/static/2b0fecd7826833aab19cfbfa10776baf/a3e80/via-ferrata-andorra.jpg","srcSet":"/static/2b0fecd7826833aab19cfbfa10776baf/f2477/via-ferrata-andorra.jpg 150w,\n/static/2b0fecd7826833aab19cfbfa10776baf/eb94d/via-ferrata-andorra.jpg 300w,\n/static/2b0fecd7826833aab19cfbfa10776baf/a3e80/via-ferrata-andorra.jpg 600w,\n/static/2b0fecd7826833aab19cfbfa10776baf/2f1e0/via-ferrata-andorra.jpg 900w,\n/static/2b0fecd7826833aab19cfbfa10776baf/1f384/via-ferrata-andorra.jpg 1200w,\n/static/2b0fecd7826833aab19cfbfa10776baf/59295/via-ferrata-andorra.jpg 2048w","sizes":"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px"},"croppedSizesDuotone":{"aspectRatio":1.3274336283185841,"src":"/static/2b0fecd7826833aab19cfbfa10776baf/5c485/via-ferrata-andorra.jpg","srcSet":"/static/2b0fecd7826833aab19cfbfa10776baf/464df/via-ferrata-andorra.jpg 150w,\n/static/2b0fecd7826833aab19cfbfa10776baf/4f3d6/via-ferrata-andorra.jpg 300w,\n/static/2b0fecd7826833aab19cfbfa10776baf/5c485/via-ferrata-andorra.jpg 600w,\n/static/2b0fecd7826833aab19cfbfa10776baf/a6ba0/via-ferrata-andorra.jpg 900w,\n/static/2b0fecd7826833aab19cfbfa10776baf/d1600/via-ferrata-andorra.jpg 1200w,\n/static/2b0fecd7826833aab19cfbfa10776baf/c58fd/via-ferrata-andorra.jpg 2048w","sizes":"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px"}}}},"isFeatured":"no"}}},{"node":{"id":"ec483bed-9530-52d7-a376-5064c28f6f11","path":"/en/smugglers-route-in-a-4x4/","title":"Smugglers’ route by 4×4: La Massana to Cabús and what has changed in Tor","date":"19 February 2020","content":"
The smugglers’ route by 4×4 is one of the most historic excursions along the Andorran border. It links La Massana with the Port de Cabús and, on the far side, with the Tor valley in Pallars Sobirà. Before you set off, though, you should know that this route is no longer what it was: since 2026, a key stretch has been closed to visitors. Here is what you can and cannot do today.
\n
Why is it called the “Smugglers’ Route”?
\n
The name means exactly what it suggests: this mountain was a crossing point between Andorra and Catalonia, a border territory where goods moved clandestinely for decades. Andorra’s link with tobacco helps to explain it: the Reig factory operated in Sant Julià de Lòria from 1909 to 1957 and is now the Museu del Tabac, with display cases devoted to smuggling.
\n
During the Second World War, some smugglers knew these passes so well that they worked as guides for fugitives on the escape lines across the Pyrenees. If this part of the story interests you, read about the freedom route and the mark left by smugglers in Andorra.
\n
What has changed: access to Tor
\n
Read this before you make any plans. According to VilaWeb, in August 2026 the co-owners of the mountain of Tor banned visitors arriving from Andorra from using the private track between the Port de Cabús and the village of Tor. That stretch is reserved for residents, and signs warn that you cannot continue along the mountain’s private tracks.
\n
This is not an isolated case. According to 3Cat, the owners had already asked some 15 companies based in Andorra to stop advertising routes through Tor, because any activity on this private land needs their permission. They also installed two gates, intended to close the mountain in winter.
\n
In practical terms: do not cross from Cabús to Tor, whether on your own or with a company that lacks express authorisation. If you book a route, ask exactly where it goes.
\n
The route you can still do: La Massana to Cabús
\n
The Andorran section remains open and is well worth the trip.
\n
The climb to the Port de Cabús
\n
From La Massana, go up through Pal and follow the CG-4 road to the Port de Cabús. The Andorran side is paved, so you do not need a 4×4 here. Do expect bends, though: if you are prone to car sickness, take it slowly.
\n
In Pal, it is worth stopping to see Sant Climent de Pal, a church from the late 11th and early 12th centuries with a three-storey Lombard bell tower. Higher up you will see the Coll de la Botella, one of the stargazing viewpoints of the La Massana Starlight Reserve.
\n
Port de Cabús
\n
Cabús is not a village but a border mountain pass at 2,328 m, with sweeping views over the valleys on both sides. It is normally open from May to October and can close in bad weather, especially in winter. On the far side the track is unpaved, and that is where the private stretch now off limits to visitors begins.
\n
You return along the same road towards La Massana, and from there you can carry on to Escaldes-Engordany and Andorra la Vella.
\n
Tor, from the Catalan side
\n
According to VilaWeb, Tor can still be reached from Alins on the valley road, since an inhabited village cannot be cut off. That means going round via the Catalan side, without passing through Cabús. Once there, remember that the mountain tracks are private and you cannot drive on them without permission. And carry your documents with you if you cross the border.
\n
The dark history of Tor
\n
Tor is famous for more than its scenery. According to 3Cat, the village has seen as many as three murders. The best-known case is that of Josep Montané “Sansa”, found dead in his home on 30 July 1995, five months after becoming sole owner of the mountain. The crime remains unsolved.
\n
The story reached a wide audience through reports and a series by Carles Porta, and visitor numbers grew so much that they led to the current restrictions. Today, according to 3Cat, Casa Sisqueta is the only establishment open to visitors. Check that it is open before you go.
\n
And at night?
\n
The image of the smuggler walking by night is part of the myth, but you will not be able to recreate it in Tor. The night-time routes with dinner in the village that were advertised years ago should be confirmed with their operator, who should be able to show the owners’ permission.
\n
If what appeals to you is adventure after sunset, in winter there is an alternative very close to the hotel: the RocRoi centre in Grau Roig organises night-time outings by snowmobile, on snowshoes and by dog sled, some with dinner.
\n
Alternative routes
\n
In summer
\n
The Hotel Grau Roig website includes 4×4 and quad routes among its mountain activities. Ask at the hotel where they go before booking. You will find more ideas in our article on off-road vehicle routes.
\n
In winter
\n
With the Port de Cabús out of season, motorised adventure moves to the snow. Its beauty was not the only reason: the Committee recognised a joint work of people and nature, a living testimony to rural mountain life, with its forests, pastures, paths and uses of water.
\n
Its core zone covers 4,247 hectares, coincides with the Madriu river basin and accounts for around 10% of the country. With the 4,092 hectares of the peripheral protection zone, the whole site covers almost a fifth of Andorra and is shared between four parishes: Encamp, Andorra la Vella, Sant Julià de Lòria and Escaldes-Engordany.
\n
You can choose between routes of varying difficulty. The classic itinerary proposed by Visit Andorra is 13.6 km long with 1,180 metres of ascent, and is rated difficult. If you want to go much further, there are multi-day treks linking refuges.
\n
From Hotel Grau Roig, which features in the MICHELIN Guide, the valley is very much part of the local landscape: the Skimo 6 ski mountaineering race of the Dynafit Andorra Skimo starts in Grau Roig and enters the Madriu. For walking, the usual approach is through Escaldes-Engordany, returning to the hotel to rest and recover in the spa.
\n
Discover the Madriu Valley in summer
\n
Summer is the best time to explore it. Above 1,700 metres, Visit Andorra advises walking between late June and late September; if the weather and terrain allow, the season can stretch from May to October.
\n
You will find intense greens, very clear water and the river beside you for most of the way. You can also combine the walk with other activities in the area, such as hiking routes in Andorra or a day’s fishing in Andorra, always with the relevant permit and in line with the regulations.
\n
The wild and varied fauna of the Madriu Valley
\n
If you walk quietly and patiently, you may come across chamois, roe deer, mouflon, wild boar, foxes, marmots, martens and squirrels. This is their home, so watch them from a distance, do not disturb them and do not feed them. A pair of binoculars helps a great deal, especially early in the morning and late in the day.
\n
A route that stays with you
\n
The Madriu-Perafita-Claror Valley offers different options depending on your experience and the time you have. If it is your first visit, the classic itinerary is the most direct way to get to know it.
\n
The route starts in Escaldes-Engordany, about 30 metres from the junction of the La Comella and La Plana road with the Engolasters road, where you will see a sign. A stone path enters the valley and leaves the Perafita valley on the right. You will soon reach the group of Entremesaigües bordes (traditional barns) and, following the path, the Ràmio bordes.
\n
Walking alongside the Madriu river, through forest and clearings, you will start to feel the climb. After the Fontverd refuge you pass the huts of La Farga, Serrat de la Barracota and La Ingla, until you reach the Riu dels Orris refuge. A little higher up is Lake La Bova, named after the bulrush that grows here in abundance, a plant typical of wet areas.
\n
When you get here, stop. Drink some water, sit down for a few minutes and enjoy the landscape before starting back, because the descent is demanding too and you need to save your strength. The official route sheet allows 3 to 6 hours for the itinerary, so set off early to return in daylight.
\n
If you want something longer
\n
The valley also fits into longer routes. Above the lake is the staffed L’Illa refuge, at 2,480 metres, beside the Estany de l’Illa at the head of the valley. The GR 11 also passes through here. There is also a very difficult 33 km trail route linking Fontverd, Riu dels Orris, L’Illa, Estanys de la Pera and Perafita, which includes a technical ridge section: it is only for runners with high mountain experience.
\n
Discover the huts along the way
\n
One of the valley’s great attractions is its pastoral heritage. The bordes and huts you pass along the way speak of how people lived and worked here, and they are the reason UNESCO recognises it as a cultural landscape. Some 99% of the land is communal property; the rest belongs to around thirty private owners at the bottom of the valley, so please respect the buildings and properties.
\n
Some refuges are unstaffed and others staffed. Fontverd is small and mainly useful in an emergency, and Riu dels Orris has few places, so do not count on finding a bed without checking first. After your walk, the borda restaurants serving traditional mountain food are a good choice for a meal.
\n
Safety first
\n
This is a demanding route, so it pays to go prepared. Wear proper mountain footwear and bring supplies of food and drink: staying hydrated is key. Check the forecast before you leave and tell someone where you are going.
\n
The Madriu in winter
\n
The area’s main season is winter, when the valley is covered in snow and the route changes completely. To see it this way, go on snowshoes, in a group and with a guide who specialises in the area, and check the avalanche risk first. If your skiing level is up to it, ski touring is another way to get to know these landscapes.
\n","categories":[{"id":"425a3962-c27d-569c-ae7b-a85f0e6bb381","name":"Adventure","slug":"adventure","parentElement":null}],"acf":{"subtitle":"A World Heritage cultural landscape in the heart of Andorra","lead":"Madriu Valley: route, refuges, wildlife and the best time to explore this UNESCO cultural landscape in Andorra, in summer and winter.","featuredMedia":{"altText":"","sourceUrl":"https://admin.hotelgrauroig.com/content/uploads/2019/05/valle-del-madriu.jpg","localFile":{"childImageSharp":{"croppedSizes":{"aspectRatio":1.3274336283185841,"src":"/static/b06d7b7c674bef09d9343d446ee9f661/a3e80/valle-del-madriu.jpg","srcSet":"/static/b06d7b7c674bef09d9343d446ee9f661/f2477/valle-del-madriu.jpg 150w,\n/static/b06d7b7c674bef09d9343d446ee9f661/eb94d/valle-del-madriu.jpg 300w,\n/static/b06d7b7c674bef09d9343d446ee9f661/a3e80/valle-del-madriu.jpg 600w,\n/static/b06d7b7c674bef09d9343d446ee9f661/2f1e0/valle-del-madriu.jpg 900w,\n/static/b06d7b7c674bef09d9343d446ee9f661/1f384/valle-del-madriu.jpg 1200w","sizes":"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px"},"croppedSizesDuotone":{"aspectRatio":1.3274336283185841,"src":"/static/b06d7b7c674bef09d9343d446ee9f661/5c485/valle-del-madriu.jpg","srcSet":"/static/b06d7b7c674bef09d9343d446ee9f661/464df/valle-del-madriu.jpg 150w,\n/static/b06d7b7c674bef09d9343d446ee9f661/4f3d6/valle-del-madriu.jpg 300w,\n/static/b06d7b7c674bef09d9343d446ee9f661/5c485/valle-del-madriu.jpg 600w,\n/static/b06d7b7c674bef09d9343d446ee9f661/a6ba0/valle-del-madriu.jpg 900w,\n/static/b06d7b7c674bef09d9343d446ee9f661/d1600/valle-del-madriu.jpg 1200w","sizes":"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px"}}}},"isFeatured":"no"}}},{"node":{"id":"7361ac8a-ee58-57df-b67f-bed223f7a659","path":"/en/the-incles-valley-the-paradise-available-to-everyone/","title":"The Incles Valley in Andorra: Easy Walk, Wildlife and Lakes","date":"24 September 2019","content":"
The Incles valley is one of the best easy walks in Andorra if you want to get away from the noise and stroll between forest and river. Here is how to get there, which route to take, what to see in each season and what to bear in mind if you come in winter.
\n
The Incles valley, a one-of-a-kind place
\n
It is not among the country’s most visited areas, which works in its favour. Its U shape gives away its glacial origin: a valley open at one end, with the river along the floor and black pine on the slopes.
\n
It lies between El Tarter and Canillo, in the parish of Canillo, and you reach it by car from Grau Roig along the main road. That makes it a good half-day outing if you are staying at Hotel Grau Roig, featured in the MICHELIN Guide: you walk in the morning and come back to the spa to rest your legs.
\n
The best-known route is the Camí de l’Obac, 2.6 km long and easy, according to Visit Andorra. It is a shaded path running along the forest and the river to the far end of the valley, and it suits children. You can do it at a gentle pace in a morning, with no previous mountain experience. Families can ask at the information office at the valley entrance, or the one in Canillo, for the guide to the “Look for them” trail game, which earns a certificate and an entry into a prize draw once completed.
\n
There is always a good time to visit the Incles valley
\n
The best period starts around June, once the snow has gone. In spring the valley wakes up little by little and the most intense greens appear. In summer it gets most of its visitors, which is why it is closed to vehicles. In autumn the foliage turns and the path takes on striking contrasts.
\n
From mid-June to early September you can travel through it in an electric buggy, similar to a golf cart, which goes all the way to the far end of the valley. It is a comfortable option if you are with older people or small children. The service ends before the Meritxell festival on 8 September. Tickets are sold at the information booth beside the car park, where you can also check the timetable.
\n
The Incles valley in winter
\n
From November to April snow takes over and the valley becomes a completely different landscape. Before you go, ask about the state of the path at the Canillo tourist office: (+376) 753 600 or vdc@canillo.ad. If there is snow, you will need suitable footwear and, depending on conditions, snowshoes. Here are more ideas for exploring Andorra on snowshoes. If you are here to ski, the valley is very close to the Grandvalira slopes, so it can make a good outing for a day off the slopes. What you should not do is head for the high lakes without winter experience: above the valley floor the terrain changes and the avalanche risk is real.
\n
Discover the wildlife in its natural habitat
\n
Few things are as enjoyable as watching animals in the wild, and here you only have to look up. Birds of prey fly over the valley, including the griffon vulture, the bearded vulture and the golden eagle. Lower down, in the forest, you may spot goldfinches and wrens. The Port d’Incles, on the French border, is also a crossing point for migrating birds.
\n
Near the lakes and rivers you will find newts and the common frog, and towards Siscaró it is easy to come across marmots. In the black pine forests you may also see squirrels and roe deer. Bring binoculars if you enjoy wildlife watching, walk slowly and stay on the path.
\n
And if what you want to see is the plant life…
\n
The valley’s ecosystem stands out for its black pine and fir forests. In the meadows and undergrowth, the flowers change with slope and altitude: you will find the poet’s daffodil (Andorra’s national flower), lily of the valley and gentians, along with shrubs such as broom and rhododendron. If you can, come in early summer, when the flowers are at their best.
\n
The routes that start from the Incles valley
\n
The valley is also the gateway to other mountain areas with classic routes. From here you can climb to three groups of lakes, each with its refuge: Cabana Sorda, Juclar and Siscaró. Juclar also has the largest lake in the country. These routes are on a different level from the walk along the valley floor, so plan them carefully.
\n
You can also continue to the Port d’Incles, at around 2,260 metres on the French border, or take the Roc de l’Home Dret trail. If you want more high mountain walking, have a look at our guides to the Pessons lakes and Andorra’s glacial lakes. And if you like the idea of spending the night up there, Juclar is one of the refuges in Andorra where you can have dinner.
\n
Always come prepared to the Incles valley
\n
Even though the path along the valley floor is straightforward, you are still in the mountains. Bring comfortable shoes, warm clothing, water and sun protection. Check the forecast before you leave and remember that the weather changes quickly at altitude. The emergency number is 112.
\n
To plan your stay, see also our hiking routes in Andorra and mountain activities.
\n","categories":[{"id":"425a3962-c27d-569c-ae7b-a85f0e6bb381","name":"Adventure","slug":"adventure","parentElement":null}],"acf":{"subtitle":"One of the prettiest easy walks in Andorra, between forest and river","lead":"Incles valley in Andorra: an easy 2.6 km walk, summer electric buggy, wildlife, nearby lakes and what to bear in mind in winter.","featuredMedia":{"altText":"","sourceUrl":"https://admin.hotelgrauroig.com/content/uploads/2019/06/valle-de-incles.jpg","localFile":{"childImageSharp":{"croppedSizes":{"aspectRatio":1.3274336283185841,"src":"/static/9caf5715cd9b31c4858926cf3b9692e0/a3e80/valle-de-incles.jpg","srcSet":"/static/9caf5715cd9b31c4858926cf3b9692e0/f2477/valle-de-incles.jpg 150w,\n/static/9caf5715cd9b31c4858926cf3b9692e0/eb94d/valle-de-incles.jpg 300w,\n/static/9caf5715cd9b31c4858926cf3b9692e0/a3e80/valle-de-incles.jpg 600w,\n/static/9caf5715cd9b31c4858926cf3b9692e0/2f1e0/valle-de-incles.jpg 900w,\n/static/9caf5715cd9b31c4858926cf3b9692e0/1f384/valle-de-incles.jpg 1200w","sizes":"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px"},"croppedSizesDuotone":{"aspectRatio":1.3274336283185841,"src":"/static/9caf5715cd9b31c4858926cf3b9692e0/5c485/valle-de-incles.jpg","srcSet":"/static/9caf5715cd9b31c4858926cf3b9692e0/464df/valle-de-incles.jpg 150w,\n/static/9caf5715cd9b31c4858926cf3b9692e0/4f3d6/valle-de-incles.jpg 300w,\n/static/9caf5715cd9b31c4858926cf3b9692e0/5c485/valle-de-incles.jpg 600w,\n/static/9caf5715cd9b31c4858926cf3b9692e0/a6ba0/valle-de-incles.jpg 900w,\n/static/9caf5715cd9b31c4858926cf3b9692e0/d1600/valle-de-incles.jpg 1200w","sizes":"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px"}}}},"isFeatured":"no"}}},{"node":{"id":"31c4d684-8eb7-5843-9c9a-c21640d5b9c1","path":"/en/pessons-lakea-dream-you-wont-wake-up-from/","title":"Pessons Lakes: route, key facts and when to go from Grau Roig","date":"24 September 2019","content":"
Discover the beauty of the heart of Andorra
\n
Do you love real mountains and getting away from the pace of the city every now and then? It is one of the best-known high-mountain routes in the country, and it begins practically on the hotel’s doorstep.
\n
The route sets off from the El Cubil car park, in Grau Roig, in the parish of Encamp, at an altitude of about 2,100 m. All around you, the peaks reach close to 2,800 m.
\n
The route in figures
\n
You will see different figures depending on the source, because they do not all measure the same route. If you have no mountain experience, go with a guide.
\n
The lakes you will find
\n
The official route names five in the order you reach them:
\n
\n
Estany Primer, at about 2,300 m, home to the mountain restaurant with a terrace.
\n
Estany Rodó.
\n
Estany Meligar.
\n
Estany de les Fonts.
\n
Estany del Cap dels Pessons, the last one before you tackle the pass.
\n
\n
The tally for the cirque changes depending on whether you include only the main lakes or the seasonal pools too: Rutas Pirineos talks of seven main lakes, while Visit Andorra, on its trail page, mentions more than twenty across the whole group. If you want to compare with similar spots, take a look at our guide to Andorra’s glacial lakes.
\n
A place this high deserves accommodation to match
\n
If you want to set off early without a drive first, spend the night at Hotel Grau Roig, a boutique hotel in the same sector where the route begins, which is listed in the MICHELIN Guide with One Key.
\n
Rest well the night before and, on your return, soothe your legs in the spa, with its heated pool, sauna and Turkish bath, free for hotel guests, or book a massage. For dinner, you can choose anything from the mountain cooking at La Vaquería to the fondues and raclettes at La Fromagerie.
\n
Hotel and route chosen, let the adventure begin
\n
Rucksack, water, walking boots, sun cream. With those, you are ready to start.
\n
You have two alternatives. The first is to go up and back along the same path. The second is the circular walk, climbing past the Pessons lakes and coming down past the Solana lakes. I would choose the second, for the change of scenery on the descent.
\n
The climb follows the GR 7, with its red and white waymarks. From El Cubil, take the track towards Estany Primer, go round its south side, and the path rises gently until it crosses an area of granite scree and zigzags towards the pass. With a bit of luck you will hear marmots.
\n
To come down via the Solana lakes, turn north at Estany de les Fonts. This is the tricky point: some of the waymarks are hard to spot, so take your time and download the GPS track beforehand.
\n
When to visit the Pessons Lakes
\n
From late June to September
\n
Visit Andorra recommends walking above 1,700 m from late June to late September, with some leeway from May to October if the weather and terrain allow. Start early: there will be more room in the car park and more leeway before any afternoon storms. Snow can linger on the paths in spring, so ask about the state of the route if you are going early in the season.
\n
In winter, with snowshoes and a guide
\n
In winter the route lies under snow and is no longer a hiking trip. The sensible option is to go with snowshoes and a qualified guide. Rutas Pirineos, for example, schedules a 9.5 km, +530 m snowshoe outing to the cirque from El Cubil, with about 4 h 30 min of walking and a qualified mountain guide. Check the outing programme and its dates.
\n
On your own, you will need experience of winter terrain and to check the avalanche risk beforehand. If you are coming by car, remember that in Andorra you must carry snow equipment from 1 November to 15 May.
\n
Enjoy the walk to the Pessons Lakes
\n
Along the way you are surrounded by some of the summits that shape the cirque: Montmalús (2,781 m), Ríbuls (2,827 m), Pessons (2,864 m) and Ensagents (2,852 m). It is worth stopping at the Estany del Cap dels Pessons to look up before deciding which way to go down.
\n
And if you are left wanting more, carry on with our hiking routes in Andorra, the Incles Valley, a more accessible option, or the full list of things to do in Andorra.
\n
Before you set off
\n
Even if it looks like a short outing on the map, go well prepared in case you lose your way or it gets late. Here are 28 real things to do, for winter and summer alike, that you can combine with a stay at Hotel Grau Roig, right on the slopes of Grandvalira and listed in the MICHELIN Guide.
\n
1- Visit its Romanesque churches, such as Sant Climent de Pal or Sant Romà de les Bons. They have a unique charm.
\n
2- Feel like a child again on the Tobotronc, which the park promotes as the longest alpine coaster in the world: around 5.3 km of descent through La Rabassa forest in Sant Julià de Lòria. If the adrenaline allows, spend the rest of the day at Naturland.
\n
3- Head out on snowshoes. It is the calmest way into the mountains in winter, and you do not need to know how to ski.
\n
4- Try a snowmobile. Ask at the hotel: it is among the snow activities you can enquire about.
\n
5- Savour a good trinxat in a borda, one of the traditional mountain houses that are now restaurants.
\n
6- Discover Andorra’s history and its contrasts by visiting traditional houses turned into museums, such as Casa d’Areny-Plandolit (stately) and Casa Rull (humble and rural).
\n
7- Go shopping in Andorra la Vella. Remember there is tax here too: the general IGI rate is 4.5%.
\n
8- Visit the prettiest, greenest villages you can imagine, such as Pal, Bixessarri or Ordino. I recommend a drive that takes in several in the same day.
\n
9- Play courier for friends and family by bringing back tobacco, but carefully. If you are 17 or over and entering Spain, the limit is 300 cigarettes per person (a carton and a half). There are alternative allowances too: 150 cigarillos, 75 cigars or 400 g of smoking tobacco. If you go over, you must declare it at customs.
\n
10- Go home with perfume for the whole family. Before you buy, compare prices in several perfumeries.
\n
11- Find out that one of Andorra’s most charming villages shares its name with a Spanish biscuit brand: Fontaneda. Its church of Sant Miquel, from the eleventh and twelfth centuries, is listed as cultural heritage.
\n
12- Keep track of the Carmen Thyssen Museum, which has left Escaldes-Engordany and is moving to the Node building in Andorra la Vella. Check whether it has opened before you go.
\n
13- Visit the Museu del Tabac, in the former Reig factory in Sant Julià de Lòria, in operation from 1909 to 1957.
\n
14- Include the Margineda bridge on your route. It dates from the late fifteenth century, is 33 m long and over 9 m high, and crosses the Gran Valira.
\n
15- Forget your own name in the thermal waters of Caldea. A tip: try the outdoor area in the depths of winter, with cold air on your face and your body in hot water.
\n
16- Ride or ski the slopes of Grandvalira. Then, mid-morning, soak up the sun on a resort terrace with a beer in hand, a true classic.
\n
17- Marvel at the views Andorra offers from its via ferratas.
\n
18- Try Alpha beer, brewed at El Mas de Ribafeta in Arinsal.
\n
19- See the Cirque du Soleil show in Andorra la Vella in summer. In 2026 it was Ràdio Andorra, from 3 July to 2 August, and it is also confirmed for summer 2027.
\n
20- Ski Pal Arinsal and Ordino Arcalís as well as Grandvalira. Andorra has superb mountains to ski, and all three now belong to Grandvalira Resorts.
\n
21- Conquer Comapedrosa, at 2,942 m the highest peak in Andorra, and enjoy the views from the summit.
\n
22- Feel as if you were in Siberia for a day on a dog-sled outing. These animals can be incredibly fast.
\n
23- Lose yourself in the shops on Avinguda Meritxell, one of the best things to do in Andorra la Vella. But go easy, or you will have to buy an extra suitcase as well.
\n
24- Stroll beside lakes such as Engolasters or Pessons. The clear water and the smell of damp grass will make you feel you are in paradise. The Pessons route is rated difficult, so plan it properly.
\n
25- Follow the Iron Route in Ordino, opened in 2002 with sculptures by artists such as Carneiro, Khimoune and Brusse. It is good proof that Andorra is well worth a summer visit too.
\n
26- Ride the Funicamp gondola, around 6 km long, which links Encamp and Solanelles (2,502 m). Do not miss the views of Andorra’s peaks on the way up.
\n
27- Stretch your legs on the hiking trail through Sorteny Park or the Madriu-Perafita-Claror valley (whose name is nearly as long as the valley itself), a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2004.
\n
28- Spend the whole journey home thinking about your next visit and what you will do differently.
\n
If you come between November and April, the snow season rules: skiing, snowshoes, snowmobiles and sleds, with Caldea and the churches for the afternoons. If you come in summer, make the most of lakes, trails, viewpoints and the Cirque du Soleil.
\n
I have left out plenty of other ideas about what to see in Andorra, a natural setting that leaves many visitors spellbound. So here is my best advice: do not think twice, switch off your computer, pack your bags and come and see us.
\n","categories":[{"id":"425a3962-c27d-569c-ae7b-a85f0e6bb381","name":"Adventure","slug":"adventure","parentElement":null}],"acf":{"subtitle":"A list of 28 things you can do in Andorra","lead":"Things to do in Andorra: 28 ideas for winter and summer, from skiing in Grandvalira and Caldea spa to Romanesque churches, hikes and shopping.","featuredMedia":{"altText":"","sourceUrl":"https://admin.hotelgrauroig.com/content/uploads/2019/06/que-hacer-en-andorra-2019.jpg","localFile":{"childImageSharp":{"croppedSizes":{"aspectRatio":1.3274336283185841,"src":"/static/7e99e5a929ea90dabb4a590614082122/a3e80/que-hacer-en-andorra-2019.jpg","srcSet":"/static/7e99e5a929ea90dabb4a590614082122/f2477/que-hacer-en-andorra-2019.jpg 150w,\n/static/7e99e5a929ea90dabb4a590614082122/eb94d/que-hacer-en-andorra-2019.jpg 300w,\n/static/7e99e5a929ea90dabb4a590614082122/a3e80/que-hacer-en-andorra-2019.jpg 600w,\n/static/7e99e5a929ea90dabb4a590614082122/2f1e0/que-hacer-en-andorra-2019.jpg 900w,\n/static/7e99e5a929ea90dabb4a590614082122/1f384/que-hacer-en-andorra-2019.jpg 1200w","sizes":"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px"},"croppedSizesDuotone":{"aspectRatio":1.3274336283185841,"src":"/static/7e99e5a929ea90dabb4a590614082122/5c485/que-hacer-en-andorra-2019.jpg","srcSet":"/static/7e99e5a929ea90dabb4a590614082122/464df/que-hacer-en-andorra-2019.jpg 150w,\n/static/7e99e5a929ea90dabb4a590614082122/4f3d6/que-hacer-en-andorra-2019.jpg 300w,\n/static/7e99e5a929ea90dabb4a590614082122/5c485/que-hacer-en-andorra-2019.jpg 600w,\n/static/7e99e5a929ea90dabb4a590614082122/a6ba0/que-hacer-en-andorra-2019.jpg 900w,\n/static/7e99e5a929ea90dabb4a590614082122/d1600/que-hacer-en-andorra-2019.jpg 1200w","sizes":"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px"}}}},"isFeatured":"yes"}}},{"node":{"id":"5e371e3c-3f7d-50fc-8fb4-538ba57fd6d8","path":"/en/walking-excursions-and-hiking-routes-in-andorra/","title":"Walking excursions and hiking routes in Andorra","date":"24 September 2019","content":"
Andorra has trails for almost every level: flat strolls beside an irrigation channel, glacial lakes less than an hour from the car park, and summits above 2,700 metres. Here are nine routes sorted by difficulty, using the official Visit Andorra route sheets wherever they exist, so you can choose with the distance and ascent to hand.
\n
Before you set off, a word on the season: Visit Andorra recommends walking routes above 1,700 metres between late June and late September. If the weather and terrain allow, that window can stretch from May to October. Conditions change quickly in the high mountains, so bring suitable footwear and clothing.
\n
Easy walks
\n
If you are new to hiking, or you want a family route that children will love, start here. These are simple routes, although the time they take varies quite a lot from one to the next.
\n
\n
Rec del Solà (Andorra la Vella): its 5.13 kilometres have hardly any climb, about 3 metres, because the path follows an old irrigation channel. It starts near Sant Ermengol and passes the parish vegetable gardens and a picnic area with a viewpoint. Along the way, information panels explain how the valley changed through farming, urban growth and adapting to natural hazards. If you walk north along the channel, you reach the oratory of Sant Antoni de la Grella and the Romanesque bridge of Sant Antoni.
\n
Iron Route (Ordino): it links Llorts with La Cortinada in 4.24 kilometres one way, about 8.4 if you walk back, with 126 metres of ascent. It takes a little over two hours and suits families. The most striking feature is the series of modern iron sculptures that line the whole path, a reminder of the area’s mining and metalworking past. In summer you can visit the Llorts mine, 30 metres deep, and at the end you will find the church of Sant Martí de la Cortinada, with murals from the late 12th century. If this side of the country appeals, there is more in our guide to sacred art in Andorra.
\n
Camí del Gall (Canillo to Soldeu): this one covers 5.86 kilometres with 285 metres of ascent, from the Canillo cable car car park at 1,535 metres to the CG-2 road near Soldeu. The highest point is El Palinqueró, at 1,805 metres. Follow the red cockerel waymarks. Visit Andorra allows 3 to 6 hours and rates it as suitable for the whole family. The path runs close to the road and often meets it, so you can shorten the walk if you need to. To get back, a bus runs from Soldeu to Canillo every hour on the hour.
\n
\n
Moderate walks
\n
This is where things get interesting. Once you have tried one of the easy routes, you may well want a little more gradient. These three take you to the high-altitude lakes the country is famous for, just like the Pessons lakes, right next to the hotel.
\n
\n
Tristaina lakes (Ordino Arcalís): a 4.39-kilometre loop with around 210 metres of ascent that starts and ends at the La Coma car park, in the Ordino Arcalís ski area. The full circuit takes about three hours, and the first lake is roughly 40 minutes away, an easy stretch for children. You will see three lakes: the Primer, the Mig and the Més Amunt, which is the largest, at about 2,330 metres, and where swimming is allowed in summer. Near the start stands Arcalís 91, a steel ring by the sculptor Mauro Staccioli. In winter the cirque lies under snow and looks completely different.
\n
Incles valley and Juclar lake (Canillo): the route begins at kilometre 3 of the road into the Incles valley, past the Baladosa bridge, and climbs 465 metres over 4.57 kilometres to the second Juclar lake. Allow about 2 hours 10 minutes up and 1 hour 40 minutes down, on the same path. Juclar is the largest lake in Andorra, at 21.3 hectares, and the first lake is home to the Pyrenean newt, a species that needs very clean water. The Juclar refuge is staffed and serves meals in summer, so you can spend the night up there. Bear in mind that the valley road closes to traffic in summer, when access is by electric buggy.
\n
L’Estanyó lake (Ordino): this walk starts at the Canya de la Rabassa car park, at 1,783 metres, inside the Vall de Sorteny Nature Park, the largest protected area in the country according to Rutas Pirineos. It takes around an hour and a half to reach the lake, at about 2,340 metres. The park stands out for its range of plants and has a botanical garden with panels to help you identify them. Once you are up there, only one thing remains: to sit by the water and enjoy the views. If you carry on to the Pic de l’Estanyó, at 2,915 metres, the full route adds up to 11.72 kilometres and about 1,135 metres of ascent, and moves into the very difficult category.
\n
\n
Mountain routes for experienced walkers
\n
These hikes call for high-mountain experience and good fitness. Some sections have steep slopes or exposed passages, so avoid them if you suffer from vertigo or if there is still snow about. Are you up for it?
\n
\n
Montmalús peak and Colells cirque (Grau Roig): this is our home route. It leaves from the El Cubil car park in Grau Roig and makes a 10.4-kilometre loop with 875 metres of cumulative ascent and about four hours without stops, according to Rutas Pirineos. You pass the first Pessons lake and Coma Estremera lake, reach the summit at 2,781 metres and continue along airy ridges to the Portella de Joan Antoni. In good conditions there are no major technical difficulties, but you will need your hands at certain points. Afterwards, the spa at Hotel Grau Roig, which appears in the MICHELIN Guide, and dinner at La Vaquería or La Marmita are a good way to recover.
\n
Carroi peak (La Massana to Andorra la Vella): it has no especially tricky sections, but the climb is demanding and relentless. From Sispony it is about 7 kilometres with 900 metres of ascent, with some three hours up and one down according to the Visit Andorra snowshoe route sheet. At the top you get a sheer view down to the centre of Andorra la Vella and Escaldes-Engordany, and on the other side the wild country of the Enclar reserve.
\n
Casamanya peak (Ordino): its 2,740 metres may look daunting at first, although the official sheet rates it as moderate: 3.75 kilometres and 750 metres of ascent from the top of the Coll d’Ordino road. The opening climb to the Vaques pass is steep, and then you follow a waymarked path. From the summit you can see the Estanyó, the Serrera, Pic de Carroi and Comapedrosa, and with luck griffon and bearded vultures too.
\n
\n
Walking in the mountains in winter
\n
From November to April the snow takes over and these routes play by different rules: the summer terrain is only for people with the right training and equipment. The simplest alternative is snowshoeing, which the hotel lists among its snow activities, with outings to frozen lakes. You can also ask about mushing or ski mountaineering. And if you would like to come back in fine weather next year, our piece on Andorra’s glacial lakes has more ideas for planning your season.
\n","categories":[{"id":"425a3962-c27d-569c-ae7b-a85f0e6bb381","name":"Adventure","slug":"adventure","parentElement":null}],"acf":{"subtitle":"Nine routes sorted by
