Between 1600 and 1900 it was one of the most important houses in the country, and walking through it is a very direct way of understanding how the elite lived at a time when luxury was rare in these valleys.
\n
If you are staying at Hotel Grau Roig, listed in the MICHELIN Guide, you can set aside half a day to visit Ordino.
\n
Why it is worth visiting
\n
The museum brings together three stories in one: that of a family, of the iron industry and of 19th-century Andorran politics. It is also in a parish with plenty of culture on offer: the Miniature Museum is not far away.
\n
A plan for winter too
\n
A house museum is a good option for a day off the slopes in the middle of the snow season, when you feel like doing something indoors. If you then want to unwind, the hotel has its spa and a dining selection with La Vaquería, El Teatro del Vino, La Marmita, La Fromagerie and Secret Room.
\n
The history of the d’Areny-Plandolit family and its influence on Ordino
\n
The family’s importance was built over centuries through family alliances, livestock farming, mines, forges and international relations. According to the sources consulted, they also traded in salt and pepper, and in 1619 they set up the Puntal forge with the Riba family of Casa Rossell. In 1753 they founded their own forge, the Areny forge, near the church of Santa Bàrbara.
\n
The iron industry was one of the most important in the country in the 18th century, and its decline at the end of the 19th century, faced with competition from Catalan blast furnaces, closed a chapter.
\n
Don Guillem, the key figure
\n
The best-known family member is Don Guillem d’Areny-Plandolit, Baron of Senaller and Gramenet. He was General Syndic of the valleys of Andorra and one of the driving forces behind the New Reform of 1866, for which he went down in history. His biography also includes his relationship with Carlism and two marriages; his first wife was Maria Dolors Parella, Baroness of Senaller.
\n
The only family with a noble title
\n
\n
It was the only family in the Principality with a noble title.
\n
A 19th-century marriage brought in the Plandolit fortune, with land in Ordino and northern Catalonia.
\n
Their pastimes included collecting, hunting, fencing and boxing.
\n
The photographs of Pau-Xavier d’Areny-Plandolit, from 1920 to 1945, are held at the National Archives, and the family library went to the National Library of Andorra.
\n
\n
The family’s final years, with a lifestyle far removed from the Andorran reality of the time, are the thread running through the experience now offered in the house.
\n
Exploring the architecture of Casa d’Areny-Plandolit
\n
Visit Andorra dates the house to the 17th century and explains that it was remodelled at the end of the 19th. Sources point to 1633 as the construction date, and an interior lintel dated 1613 suggests there was already a structure on this very spot.
\n
The house has a ground floor, a principal floor and an attic. The main block is rectangular, with a gabled stone-slab roof. A west wing projects at a right angle and an east wing runs parallel; stables, a hayloft and the caretaker’s house complete the complex. Look out for these details too:
\n
\n
The wrought-iron railing on the Carrer Major façade, dated 1849, made at the family forge and bearing the coat of arms.
\n
The limewashed exterior walls, a clear sign of prosperity.
\n
The former shop entrance, still preserved on the same street.
\n
\n
The garden
\n
The gardens are part of the complex and, according to the museum, are the only historic garden in Andorra. They are English in style, designed purely for pleasure, with mostly native plants and imported plane trees. Right next door is the Auditori Nacional d’Andorra, housed since 1991 in a former natural sciences museum.
\n
Cultural and heritage treasures of Casa d’Areny-Plandolit
\n
The guided tour takes you through several rooms containing many unique family possessions. These are some of the spaces you will come across.
\n
Ground floor: farming life
\n
Here you will find the oil store, wine cellar, meat store and woodshed, a reminder that the house, as well as being a noble residence, remained tied to the land and to livestock.
\n
Principal floor: social life
\n
There are nine rooms here. The grand salon, with luxurious furniture and family portraits, was used for receptions and balls. It is followed by a large reception or arms room, a Catalan-style kitchen with hot water and a small modernist dining room. If you are interested in that style, do not miss our article on the legacy of modernism in Andorra.
\n
You will also see the baron’s bedroom, with marquetry in mahogany and lemon wood, the chapel, the library, the music room and the baroness’s bedroom, with an English ceramic washstand. During the latest improvements, an empty secret cupboard came to light in the baron’s room.
\n
Upper floor: the curiosities
\n
Upstairs are the children’s and servants’ rooms, display cases of documents, a guest room with a full bathroom, a darkroom and a dental surgery. That room is probably the biggest surprise: it displays the skeleton of a giraffe and a preserved tapeworm.
\n
Luxury versus peasant life
\n
If you would like to see the contrast with ordinary people’s lives, combine this visit with Casa Cristo in Encamp, a humble labourers’ home that’s also part of the Hàbitat Rural circuit. And to continue with the country’s economic history, you can discover Andorra’s old mills.
\n
Events and guided tours at Casa d’Areny-Plandolit
\n
Visits are guided, so it is worth checking times and tour slots before you go: museus.ad has the latest opening hours, and you can also call (+376) 836 908 or 839 760, or write to reservesmuseus@govern.ad. If you need the tour in a particular language, ask when you book.
\n
Don Guillem’s dream
\n
The newest addition is “El somni de Don Guillem”, installed in 2022 at the top of the house. Using holograms and real objects, it goes through the baron’s life and takes you back to mid-19th-century Andorra.
\n
Activities at the museum
\n
The house marked 40 years open to the public in 2026. The museum opened in 1986, after the General Council bought the property in 1972. In 2026 it hosted a Modernista-themed party, with a guided tour, live music and tastings, as part of the “Canya als museus” programme. Check museus.ad to see what’s on when you travel.
\n
PassMuseu and virtual tour
\n
The house is part of the PassMuseu: it costs €2.50 and gives you a 50% discount at three museums on the list, and children under 10 go free. If you would like to get an idea before you go, the house also offers a virtual tour.
\n
How to fit it into your trip
\n
Ordino can be combined with a stroll around the village and, in winter, a day at Ordino Arcalís. Within a few kilometres you go from narrow valleys to glacial cirques, and several spots around the country have been equipped to take them in: glass platforms, a metal ring at 2,701 m and a 603 m suspension bridge. This route of panoramic viewpoints in Andorra sets out the ones worth the trip, with practical details for planning them from Hotel Grau Roig, in the Grau Roig sector of Grandvalira and listed in the MICHELIN Guide.
\n
It is not an official route with a single line on the map, but a selection you can spread over one or several days. Most involve a drive and a short walk.
\n
What you need to know before setting off
\n
\n
Weather: nearly all of them depend on it. A day of low cloud can leave you with no view.
\n
Season: Roc del Quer is open all year; high-mountain access, such as Tristaina, runs by season.
\n
Footwear: even the short approaches involve some climbing or descent. Wear comfortable shoes and take a warm layer.
\n
\n
Based at the hotel
\n
Back at the hotel you have the spa, with a heated pool, sauna and Turkish bath, open from 10.00 to 21.00. For dinner there is La Vaquería, El Teatro del Vino or La Marmita. If you would like to eat out on the mountain, the hotel website lists the picnic among the activities you can enquire about.
\n
Essential viewpoints in Andorra: what not to miss
\n
Roc del Quer viewpoint
\n
This is the best known in Canillo. It opened in 2016 and its walkway measures 20 m: 8 on solid ground and 12 suspended in the air, with a section of transparent glass. At the far end you meet the sculpture of a thinker by Miguel Ángel González. Below lie the Montaup and Valira d’Orient valleys, green in summer and white in winter, and panels explain the landscape and how the mountains were formed.
\n
It is at km 6.5 of the CS-240, the Coll d’Ordino road. Just before it, on the left, there is a large car park and a bar. From there you walk about 400 m, around 10 minutes and 70 m downhill, passing the Self-generating Structures by Jorge Dubon (1991). Admission is charged and it is open every day of the year, weather permitting; prices and the calendar are at ponttibetacanillo.com.
\n
Canillo Tibetan bridge
\n
It is not strictly a viewpoint, but it feels like standing on one that moves. It is 603 m long, 1 m wide and up to 158 m above the valley. It shares a website with Roc del Quer, so you can check both at once. If you are nervous of heights, start with the viewpoint.
\n
Tristaina Solar Viewpoint
\n
This is the country’s other great viewpoint. It stands on Peyreguils peak at 2,701 m, in the Tristaina cirque (Ordino Arcalís). It is a circular metal structure, 25 m in diameter, suspended in mid-air, from which you can see the Tristaina lakes, the Ordino valley, the nearby peaks and France. According to the local press, it has received more than 460,000 visitors since 2021.
\n
It runs by season and its calendar changes every year, so confirm with Ordino Arcalís on +376 891 820. If you are there from 6 to 8 August, locals talk about an alignment: the rising sun passes through the hole in Pic d’Arcalís.
\n
Roca de la Sabina and Coll de la Botella
\n
In La Massana, these two viewpoints have a different appeal: they are good places to look at the night sky. Roca de la Sabina is in Arinsal and Coll de la Botella in Pal. The latter hosts stargazing activities in both summer and winter. We cover this in our astronomical journey through Andorra’s skies.
\n
How to plan your visit to Andorra’s panoramic viewpoints
\n
The most practical approach is to group them by area, because each valley needs its own road.
\n
A day in Canillo and Ordino
\n
Start with Roc del Quer and combine it with the Tibetan bridge if you feel up to it. Then continue over the Coll d’Ordino and drop down to Ordino, where you can have lunch and visit Casa d’Areny-Plandolit. This itinerary also works well in winter, unless the pass is difficult: always check road conditions.
\n
A day in Ordino Arcalís
\n
Save this one for summer. The Tristaina gondola covers 1,600 m in about 10 minutes, with glass-floored cabins, and ends at Coma d’Arcalís. The route through the glacial cirque starts at La Coma: the resort’s page mentions about 3 hours and 4.5 km. Visit Andorra gives the Estanys de Tristaina route as 4.39 km, 210 m of ascent and moderate difficulty, with 40 minutes to the first lake.
\n
An evening in La Massana
\n
For the night-time viewpoints, phone the La Massana tourist office (+376 835 693). They will tell you which outings are running on your dates and how to book.
\n
Tips and recommendations for enjoying the viewpoint route in Andorra
\n
Choose your time carefully
\n
If you plan to take photos, check the forecast the night before and avoid the cloudy hours. In our photography routes through Andorra you will find more locations and angles.
\n
What to do in winter
\n
Snow does not close every viewpoint. Roc del Quer stays open if the weather allows, and that is when the valleys turn white. From 1 December, on Fridays, Saturdays and public holidays, there are night-time snowshoe outings up to Coll de la Botella. And you do not need to leave Grandvalira for a view: if you ski, every chairlift is a moving viewpoint. At the hotel you can ask about snowshoeing, mushing, snowmobiles and ski touring.
\n
Take the gondola if you would rather not walk
\n
The Funicamp, about 6 km long, links Encamp with Solanelles at 2,502 m. It is a comfortable way to gain height. Check its calendar, as it changes between seasons.
\n
Take the basics
\n
Water, a warm layer and sunglasses, even in summer. The weather changes fast at altitude, and on an exposed viewpoint you notice the wind.
\n
Hiking routes and access to the best viewpoints in Andorra
\n
If you would rather earn the view on foot, you have options very close to the hotel and others further away. Look at our guide to hiking routes in Andorra before choosing.
\n
The Pessons lakes, from Grau Roig
\n
The official route to the Estanys de Pessons starts from the El Cubil car park in Grau Roig and passes lakes such as Primer, Rodó, Meligar and Les Fonts. It is 5.95 km long with 707 m of ascent, and is rated difficult, taking 3 to 6 hours depending on the route. This is the great panorama right on your doorstep.
\n
Tristaina on foot
\n
The Tristaina lakes are the natural companion to the Solar Viewpoint. Bear in mind the difficulty and the gondola calendar.
\n
Comapedrosa, the roof of the country
\n
If you want the highest point, Comapedrosa reaches 2,942 m. It is Andorra’s summit and lies in La Massana, inside its natural park. It calls for different preparation: this is a mountain ascent, not a stroll with a view.
\n
\n
Easy: Roc del Quer.
\n
For those unafraid of heights: the Tibetan bridge and the Solar Viewpoint.
\n
Demanding: Pessons and Comapedrosa.
\n
At night: Coll de la Botella and Roca de la Sabina.
\n
\n","categories":[{"id":"0e8c2633-22cd-52a4-8bfe-e028a5ba997f","name":"Culture","slug":"culture","parentElement":null},{"id":"425a3962-c27d-569c-ae7b-a85f0e6bb381","name":"Adventure","slug":"adventure","parentElement":null}],"acf":{"subtitle":"","lead":"Panoramic viewpoints in Andorra: Roc del Quer, Tristaina Solar Viewpoint and the Tibetan bridge, with access, season and winter ideas.","featuredMedia":null,"isFeatured":"no"}}},{"node":{"id":"7edd2e2b-7149-51ad-b64c-4d2b03d01fb7","path":"/en/church-sant-miquel-engolasters/","title":"Church of Sant Miquel d’Engolasters: Romanesque in Andorra","date":"02 November 2026","content":"
If you enjoy losing yourself in small villages and stepping inside churches that have barely changed in centuries, the church of Sant Miquel d’Engolasters is a stop well worth making. It is one of the most recognisable Romanesque churches in the Principality, with a very tall bell tower that catches your eye as soon as you arrive, in the parish of Escaldes-Engordany.
\n
History of the Church of Sant Miquel d’Engolasters
\n
It was built in the 12th century, at the height of Andorran Romanesque, although the exact year is not recorded. It keeps almost all of its original features, apart from later additions such as the portico. It has a rectangular plan with a single nave and a semicircular apse, a gabled roof and a bell tower of about 17 metres, very tall for the size of the nave. Up at the top, between the mullioned windows, look out for the sculpted heads: they are among the few examples of Romanesque sculpture surviving in the country.
\n
As you enter, you immediately notice the simplicity of Andorran churches from that period: a wooden ceiling and whitewashed walls. Several of the country’s churches were built around the same time to a very similar design, as our guide to sacred art in Andorra explains.
\n
The great attraction inside is the apse painting, attributed to the Master of Santa Coloma, from the 12th century. It shows a Maiestas Domini surrounded by the tetramorph, in which the Archangel Michael, who gives the church its name, merges with the symbol of Saint Matthew. What you see today is an exact replica: the original is in the National Art Museum of Catalonia, in Barcelona.
\n
How and when to visit the Church of Sant Miquel d’Engolasters
\n
You get there along the CS-200 road from Escaldes-Engordany, by car or by bike. Admission is free. To find out the opening times and whether you can go in on your chosen date, check the calendar at museus.ad or write to reservesmuseus@govern.ad (+376 839 760).
\n
If you are coming in winter, with the ski season under way at Hotel Grau Roig, which features in the MICHELIN Guide, you can see it on a trip down to Escaldes, as long as the road is in good condition. Pair it that day with an afternoon at Caldea or with the Perfume Museum.
\n
A must on your route
\n
The church pairs well with an outing to the Madriu-Perafita-Claror valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Very close by is the Engolasters lake, covering about 7 hectares, next to the Hydroelectric Path, which tells the story of electricity in Andorra since 1930.
\n
Whether you are on an easy walk with the family or a longer one with friends, set aside some time for this Romanesque church. The architect César Martinell worked on Santa Coloma and Sant Joan de Caselles in 1934 and 1935. At Santa Coloma, the bell tower was repaired, the twin windows were reopened and the original horseshoe arch was exposed. He came back in the 1960s, hired by the Consell General, and wrote reports on churches across the country.
\n
Main features of Romanesque art in Andorra’s churches
\n
Andorran Romanesque is sober and highly recognisable. With a few clear features in mind, each visit will tell you much more.
\n
The architecture of the Romanesque churches
\n
The usual layout is a single nave, sometimes rectangular, sometimes trapezoidal as at Sant Joan de Caselles, with a semicircular apse. The most striking part is outside: the Lombard-style bell towers. Look for their twin windows with round arches and count the storeys. Santa Eulàlia d’Encamp has the tallest Lombard tower in the country, at 23 metres and three storeys.
\n
Mural decoration
\n
The wall paintings are the great jewel of this heritage. Many are linked to the so-called Master of Santa Coloma, a name that does not refer to a single author but to a way of working shared by several artists on both sides of the Pyrenees, with a Roman-Lombard tradition and Byzantine influence. Murals from the late 12th century survive at Sant Martí de la Cortinada, and at Sant Serni de Nagol the Romanesque paintings are the church’s best-known feature.
\n
Sculptures and ornaments
\n
Look out for the small carvings too. Our Lady of Remedies at Sant Corneli i Sant Cebrià, in Ordino, is a polychrome carving just 44 centimetres tall, dated to the 11th and 12th centuries. At Sant Climent de Pal there is another Our Lady of Remedies, from the 13th century. And at Sant Miquel d’Engolasters you will see sculpted heads between the window arches of its 17-metre tower.
\n
Ironwork
\n
Ordino had forges for centuries, and it shows: all the grilles at Sant Corneli i Sant Cebrià came from them between the 17th and 19th centuries. In the side chapels of Sant Martí de la Cortinada, Visit Andorra also highlights the work of Andorran metal workshops.
\n
Culture and tradition
\n
These churches are still part of village life. The country’s principal place of devotion is the Meritxell sanctuary, in Canillo, dating from 1976, the work of Ricardo Bofill’s Taller de Arquitectura. It replaced the Romanesque chapel damaged by fire in 1972, and Pope Francis granted it the status of minor basilica in 2014. It is not Romanesque, but it houses Andorra’s patron saint, celebrated on 8 September.
\n
List of the most iconic Romanesque churches in Andorra
\n
If you are short of time, these are the stops not to miss. They are listed from Grau Roig heading south.
\n
Sant Joan de Caselles (Canillo)
\n
This is the first you come to leaving Grau Roig, right by the main road. It was built between the 11th and 12th centuries and has a trapezoidal floor plan, a semicircular apse and a bell tower separate from the nave. The porches, from the 16th and 17th centuries, are very well preserved. Inside there is an altarpiece with Renaissance influences and Romanesque murals.
\n
Santa Eulàlia d’Encamp and Sant Romà de les Bons (Encamp)
\n
Santa Eulàlia, in the centre of Encamp, preserves a baptismal font and Baroque altarpieces from the 17th and 18th centuries. The Museum of Sacred Art is a few metres away. Sant Romà de les Bons is part of the Les Bons historic site and is the only church in the country with a Lombard-style semicircular apse. Inside are copies of paintings by the Master of Santa Coloma.
\n
Santa Coloma (Andorra la Vella)
\n
Pre-Romanesque in origin, it was built between the 13th and 14th centuries and altered later. Its circular bell tower, almost 18 metres high, is the most famous image of Andorran Romanesque. In the apse, a six-minute video mapping show recreates the murals that once decorated it.
\n
Sant Climent de Pal and Sant Cristòfol d’Anyós (La Massana)
\n
Sant Climent, from the late 11th and early 12th centuries, has a three-storey Lombard bell tower, a Baroque altarpiece and a granite baptismal font. Sant Cristòfol d’Anyós, from the 12th century, stands on a hill at about 1,300 metres, with 16th-century paintings and views over Sispony, Ordino and La Massana.
\n
Other stops
\n
If you have time left, add Sant Miquel d’Engolasters, beside the lake of the same name, and Sant Esteve, in the old town of Andorra la Vella, whose 13th-century apse is the largest in Andorra. To finish with something different, Sant Pere Màrtir, in Escaldes, is Neo-Romanesque, from 1956, and the Canòlich sanctuary, at 1,635 metres, has a statue of the Virgin from the 11th century.
\n
Architectural and artistic details of sacred art in Andorra
\n
Some of the best pieces are no longer in the churches. To see the full picture you need to include two museums.
\n
Espai Columba
\n
A few metres from Santa Coloma, this museum displays the church’s Romanesque murals, painted in the 12th century, and two fragments from Sant Esteve: the Kiss of Judas and the Flagellation of Christ. It also holds pieces such as the Cross of Sant Serni de Nagol and the Christ of Sant Martí de la Cortinada.
\n
Encamp Museum of Sacred Art
\n
It stands next to Santa Eulàlia, so the most practical plan is to see both at the same stop. Check the opening times before you go, to avoid finding it closed.
\n
A critical eye
\n
Bear in mind that not everything that looks Romanesque actually is. At Sant Martí de la Cortinada, Martinell designed a new apse and a south window in 1969, according to an article published in Altaveu. The exterior render was also removed from several churches, so the bare stone that seems so typically Romanesque to us today is partly a modern decision.
\n
Tips for visiting the Romanesque churches of Andorra
\n
Visiting hours differ from one church to another, so plan your route a little in advance.
\n
Opening times and bookings
\n
According to Visit Andorra, the churches are free to enter, except Santa Coloma, which is visited together with Espai Columba. Opening times vary: check the calendar at museus.ad, email reservesmuseus@govern.ad or ask at the tourist office in each parish.
\n
When to go
\n
July and August are the best time. In 2026, from 1 July to 31 August, the Romànic de Bat a Bat programme opened Sant Joan de Caselles, the Meritxell sanctuary, Sant Romà de les Bons, Sant Climent de Pal, Sant Miquel d’Engolasters and Santa Coloma, with guided visits. Check the dates for each year.
\n
In winter
\n
You can also do this during the ski season. Set aside an afternoon or a day off the snow and combine Sant Joan de Caselles, Encamp and Espai Columba, by appointment. Drive with due care and check the road conditions first.
\n
How to combine it with the mountains
\n
The church of Sant Martí de la Cortinada marks the end of the Iron Route, one of the simplest hiking routes in Andorra. And back in Grau Roig you have the spa and five restaurants, from La Vaquería to El Teatro del Vino, without getting back in the car.
\n","categories":[{"id":"0e8c2633-22cd-52a4-8bfe-e028a5ba997f","name":"Culture","slug":"culture","parentElement":null},{"id":"425a3962-c27d-569c-ae7b-a85f0e6bb381","name":"Adventure","slug":"adventure","parentElement":null}],"acf":{"subtitle":"What to see, where to go and how to plan your visit.","lead":"Sacred art in Andorra: the best Romanesque churches, their Lombard bell towers and murals, Espai Columba and practical tips for planning your visit.","featuredMedia":null,"isFeatured":"no"}}},{"node":{"id":"efe0ab65-d56e-5f03-b2fb-123a524e08cb","path":"/en/andorra-spring-flora-fauna/","title":"Andorra in spring: exploring local flora and fauna","date":"02 November 2026","content":"
\n
The beauty of Andorra’s flora in spring
\n
Spring arrives in Andorra in stages. While the valleys begin to turn green, the higher ground holds on to its snow for weeks, so the same trip can give you flowering meadows and white summits. If you are staying at Hotel Grau Roig, listed in the MICHELIN Guide, you are right in the Pyrenees, in an ideal setting for discovering this natural world at your own pace.
\n
What blooms and when
\n
The calendar depends on altitude. In Comapedrosa Natural Park, Pyrenean buttercups and spring crocuses appear just after the thaw, while the great burst of flowers comes in July. In the Sorteny Valley, the best flowering period runs from late June to late July, and some plants are still in bloom in August. So if you are travelling in late spring, look towards lower areas and the meadows the snow has just uncovered.
\n
\n
Pyrenean buttercups and spring crocuses, after the thaw.
\n
Gentians, St Bruno’s lilies and Pyrenean lilies, among Sorteny’s notable plants.
\n
Arnica and great yellow gentian, plants with traditional medicinal uses.
\n
\n
A garden to help you recognise them
\n
Sorteny has a botanical garden of around 800 m² with nearly 300 species grouped by habitat, and its medicinal and edible plant sections are the most visited. It is mainly in bloom from June to August, so it is best saved for the end of the season.
\n
Back at the hotel
\n
After a day outdoors, the hotel has its spa to rest your legs, along with a dining selection that includes La Vaquería, El Teatro del Vino, La Marmita, La Fromagerie and Secret Room. If you would like something more unhurried, take a look at our selection of tasting menus.
\n
Andorra’s wildlife in spring: animals you may see
\n
The wildlife in Andorra’s protected areas is very varied, although seeing any given species is a matter of patience, timing and luck. Get up early, walk quietly and take binoculars: distance protects the animals and gives you better sightings.
\n
Mammals
\n
Records for Sorteny Natural Park include chamois, roe deer, wild boar, marten, stoat and marmot, as well as the Pyrenean desman, a protected endemic species. Chamois there can form herds of more than 30 animals. Comapedrosa and Madriu also record mouflon and squirrels.
\n
Birds
\n
Around 60 notable bird species have been recorded in Sorteny alone, and Madriu has 61 nesting species. Some of the most striking are:
\n
\n
Golden eagle, bearded vulture and griffon vulture.
\n
Rock ptarmigan, capercaillie and black woodpecker.
\n
Tengmalm’s owl, rock thrush and nutcracker.
\n
\n
Amphibians, reptiles and butterflies
\n
The Pyrenean newt lives in all three natural parks, and Madriu is also home to the common frog, fire salamander and common toad. The Pallars rock lizard, discovered in 1994, is found mainly in Comapedrosa above 2,300 metres. Butterflies have their moment too: Sorteny has more than 80 diurnal species, including the Apollo, and Madriu more than 72.
\n
Fishing
\n
If you also enjoy fishing, barbless fly fishing is allowed on Sorteny’s rivers and at Estany de l’Estanyó, limited to five anglers a day and with a permit from the Ordino Tourist Office. Confirm the current conditions before you go.
\n
Hiking routes for exploring nature in spring in Andorra
\n
Andorra is made for walking, but in spring it pays to choose carefully. Snow can still cover the high trails, and the guide to protected areas points out that avalanche risk in Comapedrosa is high in winter and spring. Check conditions before setting out and, if in doubt, opt for lower-altitude routes.
\n
A good starting point is our guide to hiking routes in Andorra. Here are three ideas depending on the time of year:
\n
\n
The Pessons lakes: the route starts from El Cubil, in Grau Roig. In late spring and summer, it is the nearest walk, as long as the snow allows.
\n
The Madriu valley: altitudes range from about 1,060 to 2,905 metres, so you can choose a low stretch while the summits are still snow-covered.
\n
The Sorteny valley: you cannot drive up the forest track when there is snow, but there are routes from Canya de la Rabassa to Planell del Quer, covering 2.7 km with 275 m of ascent.
\n
\n
If you prefer something calmer, you will find more options among our forest walks. As for activities, the hotel’s website lists a picnic among its activities; you can ask about availability at reception.
\n
What to take
\n
In spring, the mountains change quickly. Take hiking boots, warm layers, a waterproof jacket, sunglasses and sun cream, water and some food. Start early and leave time to turn back if the weather gets worse.
\n
Andorra’s natural parks: havens of flora and fauna in spring
\n
Andorra has three large protected areas, each with its own character.
\n
Sorteny Valley Natural Park
\n
This is Andorra’s first natural park, in Ordino, with around 1,080 hectares and four glacial cirques. Visit Andorra credits it with more than 700 species of flowering plants, over 50 of them endemic to the Pyrenees, while the guide to protected areas refers to more than 800 vascular plants. Since October 2020 it has been a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Access is via the CG3 towards Ordino Arcalís, taking the CS370 after El Serrat. The Serrera river rises here at 2,680 metres, the highest river source in the country, and the staffed Borda de Sorteny hut opens in winter and summer, with a restaurant.
\n
Throughout the year, the park runs themed excursions on birds, butterflies and wetlands, glacial cirques and ancient forests.
\n
Comapedrosa Valleys Natural Park
\n
Located in La Massana, it covers 1,542 hectares and contains the country’s highest peak, the Alt de Comapedrosa, at 2,942 metres, and its highest lake, the Estany de Més Amunt dels Forcats, at 2,714 metres. It has more than 700 recorded species of vascular plants, and its wetlands have been on the Ramsar list since 2014. You will find its interpretation centre in Arinsal.
\n
Madriu-Perafita-Claror Valley
\n
It covers 4,247 hectares, about 10% of Andorra’s surface area. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2004 as a cultural landscape. It brings together 38 natural or semi-natural habitats and some 350 wetlands, and has been a Ramsar site since 2013.
\n
Tips for photographing flora and fauna in Andorra in spring
\n
Choose the time and the light
\n
For photographing flowers, the first and last hours of the day give softer light and less contrast. There also tend to be fewer people on the trails early on. For more inspiration, have a look at our photography routes in Andorra.
\n
Kit and technique
\n
\n
Flora: a macro lens or a good macro mode lets you capture petals and insects. A small diffuser helps with harsh light.
\n
Wildlife: a telephoto lens is the most practical way to keep your distance from chamois, marmots and birds of prey.
\n
Landscape: a wide-angle lens and a light tripod work well for glacial cirques and lakes.
\n
Protection: take a dry bag and spare batteries, as the cold drains them faster.
\n
\n
Respect the environment
\n
Do not leave the trails to get a shot, do not pick plants and do not approach nests or young animals: in spring they are especially sensitive to disturbance. Your best image is the one that does not disturb what you are photographing.
\n
And if you are travelling in winter
\n
The high season at Grau Roig is winter, from November to April, with skiing taking centre stage. The wildlife does not disappear: the snowy valleys are a good setting for following tracks, and in Sorteny the hut remains open as a staffed refuge. If your trip coincides with the end of the season, you can combine a few days on the snow with your first spring walks in the valleys.
\n
\n","categories":[{"id":"0e8c2633-22cd-52a4-8bfe-e028a5ba997f","name":"Culture","slug":"culture","parentElement":null},{"id":"425a3962-c27d-569c-ae7b-a85f0e6bb381","name":"Adventure","slug":"adventure","parentElement":null}],"acf":{"subtitle":"The flowers, animals and natural parks you can discover","lead":"Andorra in spring: flora and fauna, natural parks, hiking routes and tips for photographing the local wildlife.","featuredMedia":null,"isFeatured":"no"}}},{"node":{"id":"4cfd3e36-fa28-5414-8cf4-a109cad34548","path":"/en/wellness-andorra-spas/","title":"Andorra as a wellness destination: spas, thermal water and where to relax","date":"02 November 2026","content":"
Andorra as a wellness destination: thermal water and high mountains
\n
Andorra as a wellness destination rests on two things that few countries this small can combine: natural thermal water in Escaldes-Engordany and real mountains half an hour’s drive away. Visit Andorra counts more than 25 hotels with a spa, as well as one huge thermal leisure complex. If you are not sure where to start, here are the main ones, what each offers and how to combine them with snow or hiking.
\n
Where the thermal tradition comes from
\n
Wellness in Andorra is no recent fad. Spa tourism was already bringing large hotels to the country in the first half of the 20th century, when Escaldes began to attract visitors for its waters. It is still the heart of the offering today: that is where you will find Caldea and the country’s two thermal hotels with the longest history. If this side of things interests you, we explain more in our article on the thermal springs of Escaldes-Engordany.
\n
Mountains to complete the retreat
\n
The other ingredient is the setting. In winter, a day’s skiing in Grandvalira calls for a long soak in hot water at the end. In summer, a walk among the high mountain lakes has the same effect. That is why it pays to think of the trip as a combination: activity in the morning and spa in the afternoon.
\n
The best spas in Andorra: which to choose for what you want
\n
These are the centres highlighted by Visit Andorra. Each one suits a different kind of trip.
\n
Caldea, the great thermal leisure centre
\n
Caldea opened in 1994 in Escaldes-Engordany, designed by the French architect Jean-Michel Ruols. Its 80-metre tower is the tallest in the country, and Visit Andorra presents it as the largest thermal leisure centre in southern Europe. Inside there are several areas:
\n
\n
Thermal Leisure Spa: the largest area, with an indoor thermal lagoon at 32 to 34 °C, an outdoor pool, Indo-Roman baths, an Icelandic bath, a hammam and a sauna.
\n
Panoramic lagoon: the centre’s largest space, refurbished in 2025. Check the temperature and access conditions on the Caldea website.
\n
Inúu: for over-16s only, with indoor and outdoor thermal lagoons, waterfalls, water jets, a hot tub, a gym, treatment rooms and heated loungers.
\n
Orígens: a hammam, a sauna, thermal baths such as the Aztec and grapefruit baths, and outdoor hot tubs.
\n
Likids: for children aged 3 to 8, with supervisors, workshops and a thermal lagoon.
\n
\n
Hotel Roc Blanc and Termes Carlemany, the thermal water classics
\n
If you prefer something smaller with some history behind it, Escaldes has two benchmarks. Hotel Roc Blanc has been using thermal water for more than 70 years and was among the first in the country to offer this service. Hotel Spa Termes Carlemany, built more than 60 years ago, draws on water with a high mineral content and, according to the Pal Arinsal guide, has private hot tub rooms that you can book at reception.
\n
Sport Wellness Mountain Spa, in Soldeu
\n
This is part of the Sport Hotel Hermitage complex, next to the Grandvalira slopes. It covers 5,000 m² at an altitude of 1,850 metres, with mountain views and works by the artist Domènec Fita displayed around the facilities.
\n
The Hotel Grau Roig spa
\n
In Grau Roig the approach is more intimate and closely tied to the resort. The hotel spa, at a property listed in the MICHELIN Guide, has a heated pool, a hydromassage bath, a sauna, a Turkish bath and a relaxation area, decorated in stone and wood. It is free for guests and open from 10:00 to 21:00. Under-16s are not admitted from 15:00 to 21:00.
\n
A simple option in Pas de la Casa
\n
The Pas de la Casa Sports and Sociocultural Centre has a relaxation area with a sauna and Turkish bath, along with other sports facilities. It is a practical choice for families, as children can do other activities in the same building.
\n
Treatments in Andorra: what you can book
\n
Each centre has its own menu, and it changes over time. Always look at the current version before you go, as it is the only one that will tell you which techniques, durations and prices are on offer.
\n
Treatments at Hotel Grau Roig
\n
The hotel publishes a downloadable PDF treatment menu on its website. Have a look before you arrive and email info@hotelgrauroig.com or call +376 755 556 to book an appointment, especially in high season.
\n
Massages at Caldea
\n
Caldea offers its own massages, such as the four-handed massage and the Doiji. Inúu also has treatment rooms within its own area. If your plan is to give it the whole day, book the treatment before the entry ticket, so that your timings fit together.
\n
What other hotels offer
\n
Across the country’s hotels with spas you will find heated pools, waterfalls, massages, water beds, saunas, Icelandic baths and hammams, according to Visit Andorra. The combination varies a lot from one to another, so compare before you decide.
\n
Water therapies: what sets Andorra apart
\n
It is worth distinguishing between a hotel spa and a centre with thermal water. Both invite you to unwind, but they do not offer the same thing.
\n
The thermal water of Escaldes
\n
The water in Escaldes-Engordany is sulphurous and comes out of the ground hot: the Pal Arinsal guide mentions up to 70 °C at source. Visit Andorra highlights the calcium, sodium and iodine content of the waters at Termes Carlemany. In its bathing areas, Caldea offers it at much lower temperatures. For any therapeutic use, check with your doctor first.
\n
Heat and cold circuits
\n
The sauna, Turkish bath and hydromassage form the basis of almost every mountain spa. Start with short sessions, drink water and rest between one area and the next. This is especially useful after skiing above 2,000 metres, when the altitude takes more out of you than you might think.
\n
Out in the open air
\n
Outdoor lagoons and hot tubs are the most distinctive part of the experience in the mountains. In Grau Roig, the Summer Lounge operates in summer and autumn with loungers, fresh juices, cocktails and an outdoor hot tub for up to eight people.
\n
Wellness plans in Andorra: how to organise your stay
\n
With these elements you can shape the trip to suit you, depending on the season and who you are going with.
\n
In winter: skiing and spa
\n
Winter is the high season. Staying at the foot of the slopes lets you ski in the morning in Grandvalira, with its 215 kilometres of runs, and go down to the spa without getting in the car. If you would rather not ski one day, snowshoeing is a calmer alternative, and Caldea is about 30 minutes by car from the hotel.
\n
In summer: hiking and rest
\n
In good weather, combine one of the hiking routes in Andorra with an afternoon at the Summer Lounge. The Pessons lakes are very close to the hotel: the first is about a 30-minute walk from the El Cubil car park, so you can fit it in before lunch.
\n
Dining well matters too
\n
Without leaving Grau Roig you have five restaurants to choose from: La Vaquería, El Teatro del Vino, La Marmita, La Fromagerie and Secret Room. La Marmita serves market-led, seasonal cuisine, a good option after an afternoon at the spa. And if you are travelling as a couple, our romantic getaway in Andorra has two complete itineraries.
\n
Keeping up your routine
\n
If you do not want to lose your exercise routine, the hotel has a fitness room with Technogym machines. A short session in the morning, a walk in the snow or along the valley and the spa in the afternoon make for a very full stay.
\n","categories":[{"id":"01807db2-6c8f-5641-a80b-77b94f7ec34e","name":"luxury","slug":"luxury","parentElement":null}],"acf":{"subtitle":"Which spa to choose and how to combine it with the mountains.","lead":"Andorra wellness destination: Caldea, hotel spas and thermal water in Escaldes, with what each offers and how to combine it with skiing or hiking.","featuredMedia":null,"isFeatured":"no"}}},{"node":{"id":"b162865f-dc4a-535c-9fa2-691922c18d5d","path":"/en/snowshoeing-andorra-routes/","title":"Snowshoeing in Andorra: routes, tips and where to hire","date":"02 November 2026","content":"
Snowshoeing in Andorra is the simplest way into the winter mountains if you do not ski. From flat walks with children to routes of four or five hours, there are options in Grandvalira, Pal Arinsal and Ordino Arcalís. Here is how snowshoes work, where to use them and what to bear in mind before heading out.
\n
What are snowshoes?
\n
They are platforms that attach to your boots with bindings and let you walk on snow without sinking. You do not need a helmet or special footwear: your own boots will do, as long as they are waterproof, comfortable and mid or high-cut, since the lower part and especially the toe will be in contact with the snow.
\n
How do snowshoes work?
\n
By spreading your weight over a larger surface than your sole, they stop you sinking into soft snow. They also have metal points underneath that give you grip on slippery ground. They are normally used with two poles, which help you keep your balance and climb more easily.
\n
Who can go snowshoeing?
\n
It is a calm activity that is easy to learn, and there are guided routes for all ages. That said, it demands more than the distance suggests: walking on snow takes more effort than following a path in summer. Choose your route according to your fitness, not just the kilometres.
\n
The best places for snowshoeing in Andorra
\n
These are some of the best-known areas and routes. Distances and times are only a rough indication, because they vary a great deal with snow conditions.
\n
1. Grandvalira
\n
Grandvalira has several of the most accessible routes, and one of them starts from the hotel’s own sector. The route to the Pessons lakes, from Grau Roig, covers 9.5 km with about 500 m of ascent and takes around 4 hours, for those with some experience. Easier is the Estany de les Abelletes, about 2 km and 175 m of ascent, some 2 hours, a lake marking the border with France. The path from les Bordes d’Envalira to Soldeu, about 2 km and mostly downhill, is also straightforward, as is El Peretol, about 3 km through the Moretó forest. For families starting out, the Camí de l’Obac in the Incles valley is flat and about 3 km long.
\n
From the hotel you can ask about snowshoe outings on routes of varying difficulty, by day or by night.
\n
2. Pal Arinsal and Ordino Arcalís
\n
In the Pal sector, the climb to Pic del Cubil starts from Pla de la Cot and reaches 2,359 m: just over 7 km and 450 m of ascent, and physically demanding. In Arcalís, the Estanys de Tristaina route covers 11 km, 550 m of ascent and about 5 hours, so it is better if you are used to exercise. There are also guided night outings with dinner in Ordino Arcalís, Grau Roig and Pal Arinsal.
\n
3. Comapedrosa Nature Park
\n
In La Massana, the Comapedrosa Valleys nature park surrounds the country’s highest summit, the Alt de Comapedrosa, at 2,942 m. Its natural areas are recognised as a Starlight destination, and in winter, from 1 December, there are night snowshoe outings on Fridays, Saturdays and public holidays at the Coll de la Botella viewpoint in Pal. If that appeals, continue with our guide to stargazing.
\n
Tips for making the most of snowshoeing in Andorra
\n
A few decisions make the difference between a good day and a long one:
\n
\n
Choose a route that suits your fitness and experience.
\n
Dress in layers and bring gloves, a hat and sunglasses.
\n
Wear waterproof, comfortable, mid or high-cut boots.
\n
Carry water, some food and a basic first-aid kit.
\n
Check the forecast and avalanche risk before you go, and stay in if the weather is bad.
\n
Respect nature and leave no litter behind.
\n
Walk in a group or tell someone your route and return time. If you do not know the area, go with a guide.
\n
\n
Frequently asked questions
\n
1. Do I need previous experience to go snowshoeing in Andorra?
\n
No. You can pick it up in a few minutes and there are easy routes for families with children or people with no experience. For routes such as Pessons or Tristaina, some experience is advisable.
\n
2. What is the best time of year for snowshoeing in Andorra?
\n
Winter, as long as there is enough snow. Organised outings tend to start in December, although dates depend on each operator and on conditions each season. If you are coming to ski, you can save the snowshoes for your rest day; also check the ski pass prices to plan your week.
\n
3. Should I hire snowshoes or buy them?
\n
You can do either. Rental shops at Andorra’s ski resorts stock snowshoes, usually with two poles, in Grandvalira, Ordino Arcalís and other areas. If you will not use them often, hiring is the most practical choice.
\n
4. Where to stay for snowshoeing in Grau Roig?
\n
Hotel Grau Roig sits at the foot of the Grau Roig sector, with the snow right outside the door, and features in the MICHELIN Guide. When you get back, there is a spa with a heated pool, sauna and Turkish bath. And if you would like another snow activity without skis, try mushing.
\n","categories":[{"id":"425a3962-c27d-569c-ae7b-a85f0e6bb381","name":"Adventure","slug":"adventure","parentElement":null}],"acf":{"subtitle":"Routes for every level, from walks with children to the Pessons lakes","lead":"Snowshoeing in Andorra: routes in Grandvalira, Pal Arinsal, Ordino Arcalís and Comapedrosa, rough distances, practical tips and equipment hire.","featuredMedia":null,"isFeatured":"no"}}},{"node":{"id":"36c2f143-c7cd-58c2-80fd-cefddbbb515e","path":"/en/literary-tour-andorra/","title":"Literary tour of Andorra: writers, books and places","date":"02 November 2026","content":"
Introduction to a literary tour of Andorra
\n
Andorra has more books behind it than you might expect. There are eighteenth-century law manuals, chronicles by French and American travellers, essays by Josep Pla and contemporary novels now being translated into other languages. This literary tour suggests you read the country first and then go and see it: which authors are worth knowing, which books to pack and which real places those pages lead you to.
\n
You can base yourself at Hotel Grau Roig, in the Grau Roig sector of Grandvalira, which is listed in the MICHELIN Guide. The idea works at any time of year, but winter has one advantage: you ski in the morning and head down in the afternoon to a church, a museum or a library.
\n
The best starting point: an anthology by parish
\n
If you only buy one book, make it the Andorra volume in the Geografia Literària collection, published by Pòrtic in 2024. It was prepared by the philologist Llorenç Soldevila, who finished it before he died, and it has a foreword by Vicenç Villatoro. It gathers texts by authors who have set their work in Andorra and arranges them by the seven parishes: Canillo, Encamp, Ordino, La Massana, Andorra la Vella, Sant Julià de Lòria and Escaldes-Engordany. It is, quite literally, a reading map.
\n
What to bear in mind
\n
Much of this writing is in Catalan, the country’s official language, although translations exist. Obaga, by Albert Villaró, came out in Spanish as Guárdame las vacas and in French as Gardez-moi les vaches. It is worth looking up titles before you travel, because availability varies from one language to another.
\n
\n
To begin with: Soldevila’s anthology.
\n
For fun: Obaga, a comedy about smuggling.
\n
To understand the country: the essays by Josep Pla and Percepcions d’Andorra, by Antoni Morell and Pere Figuereda.
\n
\n
Historic places in Andorra linked to its books
\n
There is no signposted official literary route, so this itinerary is built from places that feature in the history of Andorran literature or that help you make sense of it. They are spread around the country and easy to reach by car.
\n
Meritxell Sanctuary
\n
In 1874 the Jesuit Lluís Ignasi Fiter i Cava anonymously published a Història de Nostra Senyora de Meritxell. The church you see today is a different one: a fire destroyed the statue and much of the sanctuary on 8 September 1972, and the new building is the work of Ricardo Bofill. The old one was restored as an exhibition space, Meritxell Memòria. In 2014 Pope Francis gave it the title of minor basilica, the only one in the Principality. Our Lady of Meritxell is the patron saint of Andorra and her feast day falls on 8 September.
\n
Sant Joan de Caselles
\n
As you leave Canillo towards France, beside an old road, this eleventh and twelfth-century church deserves a stop. It has a rectangular nave, a semicircular apse, a Lombard bell tower and the remains of a Romanesque stucco Christ in Majesty. Entry is free; check opening times with the Canillo tourist office. If you want to see more, take a look at our guide to Andorra’s Romanesque churches.
\n
Casa de la Vall and the National Library
\n
The country’s first library was founded on 8 September 1930 in the hall known as the sala dels passos perduts (hall of lost steps) at Casa de la Vall, in Andorra la Vella, on the initiative of the Sociedat Andorrana de Residents a Barcelona. Today the National Library is in Encamp, in the former Hotel Rosaleda at Avinguda François Mitterrand 13, a building of national cultural interest. It holds the legal deposit of everything published in the country.
\n
Ordino
\n
Joan Peruga, one of the best-known Andorran novelists, has a title that already makes you want to go: Last summer in Ordino. Make the most of it by walking round the village and stepping into Casa d’Areny-Plandolit, which takes you back to the stately Andorra of earlier centuries.
\n
Authors and works linked to Andorra
\n
The list is longer than this page allows, so here are the names that give you a complete picture, from the early travellers to the authors publishing now.
\n
The first chroniclers and travellers
\n
The founding text is the Manual Digest by Antoni Fiter i Rossell, from the eighteenth century, which the Consell General reissued in facsimile in 1987. In 1763 the priest Antoni Puig wrote the Politar Andorrà. Then came the outsiders. The Frenchman Pierre-Roch Roussillou wrote De l’Andorre in 1823, the first complete monograph on the Principality. Gaston Vuillier published Le val d’Andorre in 1888, and the American Bayard Taylor wrote The Republic of the Pyrenees in 1867. Imogene Warder, also American, described her journey in On foot through Andorra in 1937. Among the Catalans, Jacint Verdaguer left writings on the country, as did Valentí Almirall, while Josep Aladern published his Cartas andorranas in 1892.
\n
Josep Pla and Salvador Espriu
\n
Josep Pla, who was not Andorran, devoted essays to the country in 1943, 1959 and 1973. Salvador Espriu’s case is different: his relationship with Andorra was mainly through letters. He wrote the text for an album of 25 photographs by Jean Dieuzaide, letters to Andorran officials and the foreword to Set lletanies de mort by Antoni Morell. In 1986 Banca Reig published Salvador Espriu i Andorra in Sant Julià de Lòria, with a selection of his texts and letters.
\n
The Andorran novel today
\n
\n
Antoni Morell (1941-2020): born in Barcelona, he was secretary general of the Government of Andorra and its representative to the Holy See. He wrote Set lletanies de mort (1983) and Borís I, rei d’Andorra (1984), and won the Carlemany Prize for fiction in 1999.
\n
Albert Salvadó (1951-2020): historical fiction, with the Nèstor Luján prizes of 1998 and 2005 and the Carlemany of 2002.
\n
Albert Villaró (1964): Obaga (2003), in which smuggling is an honourable trade, and L’any dels francs, on the Catalan counts’ expedition to Córdoba in 1010. He has won the Josep Pla (2014) and Prudenci Bertrana (2015) prizes.
\n
Joan Peruga (1954): in La república invisible (2004), a nineteenth-century traveller photographs the Cal Calones inn and, on developing the plate, finds a different image.
\n
Teresa Colom (1973): poetry and short stories. On tot és vidre won the FNAC Talent award in 2009 and Miss Keaton i altres bèsties the Maria Àngels Anglada prize in 2016.
\n
\n
Recommended literary itineraries in Andorra
\n
Here are three ideas that fit into a single day. Allow enough time for the road and, in winter, check conditions on the pass before you set off.
\n
Canillo and Encamp: faith, travellers and libraries
\n
Start at Sant Joan de Caselles, carry on to Meritxell and finish in Encamp, outside the National Library. Encamp’s parish library also hosts events: in April 2026, together with the Associació d’Editors d’Andorra, it held a round table on new books with authors such as Joan Peruga. This is the easiest itinerary if you only have an afternoon after skiing.
\n
The Andorra of Boris I
\n
In July 1934 Boris Skossyreff proclaimed himself King of Andorra. It lasted about twelve days: the Guardia Civil arrested him on 20 July and he ended up expelled to Portugal. Morell turned the story into a novel and Jorge Cebrián has just published L’estafador que va ser rei d’Andorra (Anem Editors). Read it, then stroll round the historic centre of Andorra la Vella, stopping outside Casa de la Vall.
\n
Smuggling, in fiction and in fact
\n
Obaga takes place in an invented district, Lapena, with villages like Llobarca, though its mountains are reminiscent of north-west Andorra. To complement your reading, explore the smugglers’ legacy in Andorra and choose one of the hiking routes when there is no snow.
\n
Tips for enjoying your literary tour of Andorra
\n
1. Go for Sant Jordi if you can
\n
23 April is the big day for books. In 2026 Andorran publishers presented more than 30 new titles in history, crime fiction, poetry and children’s literature. It is also a good moment to see the craft market and other events in the capital.
\n
2. Follow the prizes
\n
The Premi Carlemany, organised by the Government of Andorra and Grup 62 through Columna, is a useful guide to recent reading. The 2026 reading-promotion edition went to Toni Mata for El centre del món; the jury is made up of students aged 14 to 16.
\n
3. Keep the evening for reading
\n
In winter it gets dark early, and that is the moment to take out your book. The hotel spa has a heated pool, sauna and Turkish bath, and is open from 10.00 to 21.00. Afterwards you can stop by the Copper Bar and have dinner at La Vaquería, El Teatro del Vino or La Marmita; you will find their menus under hotel restaurants.
\n
4. Check opening times before you leave
\n
Museums and churches change their hours according to the season. The country’s official museum website, museus.ad, and each parish’s tourist office can confirm them. For Sant Joan de Caselles, contact the Canillo office on (+376) 753 600.
\n","categories":[{"id":"0e8c2633-22cd-52a4-8bfe-e028a5ba997f","name":"Culture","slug":"culture","parentElement":null},{"id":"425a3962-c27d-569c-ae7b-a85f0e6bb381","name":"Adventure","slug":"adventure","parentElement":null}],"acf":{"subtitle":"","lead":"Literary tour of Andorra: authors, novels and real places to read the country and then visit it, in winter or summer, from Hotel Grau Roig.","featuredMedia":null,"isFeatured":"no"}}},{"node":{"id":"67518eb2-7710-5360-8e9f-618d64e80148","path":"/en/escaldes-engordany-art-centre/","title":"Escaldes-Engordany Art Centre (CAEE): a visitor guide","date":"02 November 2026","content":"
When you think about a few days in Andorra, the first things that come to mind are skiing, shopping or a visit to Caldea. These are all fine choices, but Andorra has culture too, and the Escaldes-Engordany Art Centre is a perfect example.
\n
The history of the cultural centre
\n
The centre reflects traditional Andorran architecture, with its granite walls. The building is the work of Catalan architect Celestí Gusí, who built it between 1932 and 1934 on a commission from the monks of Montserrat. It was originally meant to house the car park of the Hotel Valira and the former school of Escaldes-Engordany. Later it became the Cine Valira, Andorra’s first cinema, before being restored as a cultural space.
\n
Today it is the permanent home of the work of Catalan sculptor Josep Viladomat. His plaster casts and sketches sit alongside the marble and bronze sculptures, so you can follow the whole creative process of his career. If you want more sculpture, carry on with our guide to open-air sculptures in Andorra.
\n
In addition, the second floor hosts temporary exhibitions and a cultural programme for all audiences. The building also holds the collection of models of Andorra’s Romanesque art, a good complement if you are interested in the country’s Romanesque churches.
\n
The centre is a fine example of the heritage of Escaldes-Engordany and of the use of granite, so characteristic of Andorran architecture. If you would like to explore the parish’s architecture further, take a look at the legacy of Modernisme in Andorra as well.
\n
How and when to visit the centre
\n
The centre stands at Avinguda Carlemany 30, in central Escaldes-Engordany. Places are limited, so it is worth booking. The space is accessible for people with reduced mobility. There are fun activities for children and educational workshops for school groups, so it works just as well with friends as with family.
\n
It is also part of the PassMuseu, Andorra’s museum passport. The pass costs €2.50 and gives you a 50% discount at three museums; it is free for under-10s.
\n
A visit not to be missed
\n
Cultural activities are perfect for resting after a day of skiing or other mountain sports, and for clearing your head after a day of shopping. In winter, when the snow takes centre stage, a morning off the slopes is enough for this visit and a stroll along Avinguda Carlemany itself, also home to the Perfume Museum.
\n
If you are staying at Hotel Grau Roig, listed in the MICHELIN Guide, you can set aside an afternoon to head down to Escaldes-Engordany. You climb onto a sled pulled by Nordic dogs and cross the snow in a way that feels nothing like skiing, with no lifts and no engine noise. Here is what it involves, which routes are available and what you should bring along.
\n
What is mushing?
\n
Mushing means travelling across the snow on a sled pulled by dogs. There are two ways of doing it: as a passenger, with a professional musher handling the team, or driving the sled yourself while a guide gives you directions. In Grau Roig you can do both, so you also get the chance to be a musher for a day.
\n
The dog team
\n
The dogs are the heart of mushing. Grau Roig uses Nordic breeds such as the husky, the Samoyed and the Alaskan Malamute, all well suited to the cold and to running on snow. When the ride ends, operators usually leave a little time for you to get close to them and stroke them.
\n
The sled and the driver
\n
Passenger sleds are larger, take several people, depending on the operator, and are driven by a professional musher, so no effort is needed on your part. Driving sleds are individual, lighter and fitted with a brake. You stand behind the basket and steer a team of 4 to 6 dogs, depending on your weight, while the guide gives you instructions for the whole route.
\n
Why choose mushing in Andorra?
\n
Because it is the calmest way to see the snowy mountains, and it fits very well into a ski week. It is a winter activity available during the snow season, so you can save it for an afternoon off the slopes, or for that day when your legs need a rest but you still want to be up in the mountains.
\n
Routes in Grau Roig
\n
The operator RocRoi advertises rides of 2, 3 and 5 km in Grau Roig, a 2 km option where you do the driving, a 5 km night outing and a 10 km ride with dinner. The longer routes head into the Moretó forest. If you would like a longer night in the mountains, have a look at our guide to dinners in high-mountain huts as well.
\n
Who it is for
\n
As a passenger you need neither experience nor any particular level of fitness, which is why it works for families, couples and groups of friends. Age limits change with the area and the type of ride: the night rides in Grau Roig advertise a minimum age of 3 with an adult. The minimum age for driving and the places per sled depend on the operator. Check when you book, as these conditions can vary from one season to the next.
\n
Getting close to nature
\n
What stays with you is the contrast: the silent forest, the sound of paws on snow and the cold on your face. If you like this unhurried kind of outing, pair it with a snowshoe walk. And if you would rather have more speed, there is also the snowmobile.
\n
FAQs
\n
Is mushing in Andorra safe?
\n
You always go out with guides, who explain the activity before you set off and stay with you along the route. Follow their directions, especially if you are driving, and ask which insurance the activity includes: on the night rides advertised by RocRoi, third-party liability cover is included but accident cover is not.
\n
Do I need previous experience for mushing in Andorra?
\n
No. As a passenger, all you have to do is sit back and enjoy it. If you would like to drive, you get your instructions before setting off and the guide stays with you all the way.
\n
What should I bring for mushing in Andorra?
\n
Mountain boots, a good warm jacket, gloves and sunglasses. Add a hat and sun cream, as the snow reflects a lot of light. Dress in layers: as a passenger you will hardly move, so you will feel the cold more.
\n
How do I book from the hotel?
\n
Tell us you would like a mushing outing during your stay and we will help you find the best combination of times: +376 75 55 56 or info@hotelgrauroig.com. Here is which room to choose, what to do as a couple, where to have dinner and two weekend plans, one for the snow and one for the summer.
\n
Which room to choose
\n
The hotel has five room types: Authentic, Superior, Romantic, Junior Suite and Deluxe Suite. For this kind of trip, two stand out from the rest:
\n
\n
Romantic Room: between 35 and 40 m², with sloping ceilings, oak in ochre tones and leather details. Its big draw is the wooden barrel-style bathtub for two, alongside a separate shower. It has a king-size bed and views of the Grandvalira slopes and the surrounding peaks.
\n
Deluxe Suite: 65 m², with a separate sitting room, dressing room, a hydromassage bath built into the room and a furnished balcony overlooking the slopes. This is the one to pick if you want to spend a good part of the day indoors.
\n
\n
Details that make a difference
\n
In both rooms you will find a bathrobe and slippers, a pillow menu, free coffee and tea, a minibar and high-speed wifi. What really changes the trip is the setting: you open the curtains and there is snow or high mountain meadow right in front of you, with no city in sight.
\n
Activities for couples in Andorra
\n
Some of these plans do not even require you to leave Grau Roig. The rest you book according to the season and how active you feel.
\n
Spa and wellbeing
\n
The hotel spa is free for guests and open from 10:00 to 21:00. It has a heated pool, a hydromassage bath, a sauna, a Turkish bath and a relaxation area, all in stone and wood, with soft lighting. A useful detail for a couple’s break: under-16s are not admitted from 15:00 to 21:00, so the afternoon tends to be the best time to go. There is a treatment menu, and it is worth booking in advance. In summer and autumn the Summer Lounge opens as well, with loungers, fresh juices, cocktails and an outdoor hot tub for up to eight people.
\n
Winter plans
\n
The snow season, from November to April, is the high season. The 215 kilometres of Grandvalira’s slopes start from the door, and the snow activities listed by the hotel include:
\n
\n
Mushing: a dog-sled ride through the valley. The RocRoi centre in Grau Roig runs 5-kilometre night outings and a 10-kilometre one with dinner, for a minimum of two people.
\n
Snowshoeing: outings to frozen lakes. RocRoi also has a two-hour guided night walk with dinner for two, with no experience needed.
\n
Snowmobiles: on a two-seater machine, with departures at sunset or after dark, once the slopes have closed.
\n
Panoramic flights: the hotel also mentions flights over the principality. Ask about conditions and availability when you book.
\n
\n
Summer plans
\n
Once the snow melts, the area fills with trails and lakes. The hiking routes begin almost in the car park: the Pessons lakes are just a step away. The hotel also lists horse riding, 4×4 routes, via ferrata, golf and helicopter flights, plus a 4×4 outing with a picnic at 2,400 metres that includes champagne and fruit. Check dates and availability before you finalise your plan.
\n
Romantic restaurants: where to have dinner in Andorra as a couple
\n
Without getting in the car, you can choose from five restaurants and a cellar with more than 300 wines, cavas and champagnes, with sommeliers on hand to suggest pairings.
\n
The hotel’s restaurants
\n
\n
El Teatro del Vino: the hotel’s most avant-garde menu, poised between tradition and modernity, with wine in the leading role. This is the one we would choose for the special dinner of the trip.
\n
La Fromagerie: fondues and raclettes. Melted cheese at the table after a day in the snow is hard to beat.
\n
La Marmita: classic market and seasonal cooking, with produce chosen by the chef.
\n
La Vaquería: hearty, traditional mountain food at the foot of the slopes. Ideal for lunch.
\n
Secret Room and Copper Bar: the fifth dining space and the hotel bar, for making the night last with one more drink.
\n
\n
How to plan the dinner
\n
Book ahead, especially on high-season weekends. If you are celebrating something, say so when you book and ask about the tasting menu and its wine pairing. If you would like to dine out, our guide to fine dining restaurants in Andorra has more addresses, such as Ibaya, which holds the country’s only Michelin star in the 2026 guide.
\n
After dinner
\n
Grau Roig is high in the mountains, about 30 minutes by car from Caldea, so the nights are quiet. If the sky is clear, wrap up and go outside to look at the stars. Our article on stargazing explains where and how to do it in Andorra.
\n
Itineraries for your romantic getaway in Andorra
\n
These two suggestions are just a starting point. Adapt them to your own pace: the best thing about a trip for two is being able to change your minds.
\n
A snow weekend
\n
\n
Friday: arrival, a soak in the bath in your room and a fondue dinner at La Fromagerie.
\n
Saturday: skiing or snowshoeing in the morning, lunch at La Vaquería and spa in the afternoon. At night, mushing with dinner, if places are available.
\n
Sunday: a last run or a walk in the snow and, on the way back, a stop at Caldea. Its Inúu area is for over-16s only, with indoor and outdoor lagoons and heated loungers.
\n
\n
A summer weekend
\n
\n
Friday: arrival, a drink at the Summer Lounge and dinner at La Marmita.
\n
Saturday: a walk to the Pessons lakes in the morning, the outdoor hot tub in the late afternoon and dinner with wine pairing at El Teatro del Vino.
\n
Sunday: horse riding or a 4×4 route, on request, and on the way back a visit to the church of Sant Joan de Caselles, in Canillo, beside the CG-2.
\n
\n
Tips for a romantic getaway in Andorra
\n
A few decisions made in advance can save you a lot of trouble in the mountains.
\n
Book anything with limited places
\n
Night outings have limited places and can be cancelled because of strong wind, heavy snow or a lack of snow. Schedule them for the first possible day, in case you need to change the date. RocRoi does not include accident insurance in the price, but sells it at its centre.
\n
Plan the trip according to the season
\n
In winter, carry chains or suitable tyres and check the road conditions before setting off. In summer, bear in mind that routes above 1,700 metres are recommended between late June and late September, and that it is cooler up here even when it is hot lower down.
\n
Leave room for doing nothing
\n
The classic mistake is filling the diary. One activity a day, the spa and a good dinner are more than enough. And if you get the choice, a morning of fresh snow with the slopes still empty is worth more than any fixed plan.
\n","categories":[{"id":"01807db2-6c8f-5641-a80b-77b94f7ec34e","name":"luxury","slug":"luxury","parentElement":null}],"acf":{"subtitle":"Which room to choose, what to do as a couple and where to have dinner.","lead":"Romantic getaway in Andorra: rooms with a bath for two, spa, dinners and couples' plans in Grau Roig, with two itineraries for snow and summer.","featuredMedia":null,"isFeatured":"no"}}},{"node":{"id":"97bbc493-619c-59a1-b92b-4e6e8dd79521","path":"/en/miniature-museum-ordino/","title":"Miniature Museum in Ordino: a fascinating journey into tiny art","date":"02 November 2026","content":"
History of the Miniature Museum in Ordino: an unusual museum in Andorra
\n
The Miniature Museum in Ordino is one of those places that is hard to explain until you put your eye to the microscope. It is devoted mainly to the work of Ukrainian miniaturist Nicolai Siadristy, and the pieces are so small they can only be seen through a lens. It makes for a short, intriguing indoor visit, perfect for a day of poor weather. It is also one of those visits that appeal even to people who rarely set foot in museums. If you are coming from Hotel Grau Roig, which features in the MICHELIN Guide, the journey takes you across half of Andorra, so it is worth combining the visit with something else in the Ordino valley.
\n
Who is Nicolai Siadristy?
\n
Visit Andorra presents him as one of the world’s great miniaturists. He makes every piece by hand, and a single work can take him up to eight years. He does not work only with precious metals: he also uses paper, fruit seeds and grains of rice as a base.
\n
What the collection includes
\n
The museum brings together Siadristy’s permanent exhibition with two other collections: Liu Shouben’s small Chinese bottles and a set of Russian matryoshka dolls and papier-mâché boxes. What unites them all is the scale and the meticulous handwork.
\n
What to see at the Miniature Museum in Ordino: masterpieces in miniature
\n
The visit is organised around the microscopes. Take your time: the pleasure lies in looking, glancing away and looking again to take in the real size of what is in front of you.
\n
Siadristy’s micro-miniatures
\n
These are the core of the museum. The pieces cited by the tourist board include a Tavern on a Grain of Salt and a camel train, worked in materials such as gold and platinum or on seeds and grains of rice. You will also see crucifixes and religious art at the same scale.
\n
Liu Shouben’s snuff bottles
\n
These are small Chinese bottles about 5 cm tall, hand-painted with Andorran and western motifs. This part of the visit is a surprise, because you will recognise landscapes and monuments of the country on an object that fits in the palm of your hand.
\n
Matryoshka dolls and papier-mâché boxes
\n
The museum also holds Russian matryoshka dolls of various sizes, the smallest of them true miniatures, along with papier-mâché boxes. This is the part that works best with children, because the larger pieces can be seen without a microscope.
\n
The space
\n
The ticket office and gift shop are on the ground floor, and there is an audiovisual area about the artist’s life and work. The museum is adapted for people with reduced mobility.
\n
Other museums in the area
\n
In Ordino you also have the Casa d’Areny-Plandolit, home of the only Andorran family with a noble title, enriched by livestock, iron and forges. Don Guillem d’Areny-Plandolit championed the New Reform of 1866, and the museum tells his story with holograms and gardens. Both visits fit comfortably into one morning. And if you have a little more time, Ordino’s Iron Route is an outdoor walk that recalls the valley’s mining past.
\n
Opening hours and admission to the Miniature Museum in Ordino: practical information
\n
These details are the ones published on the official museus.ad website. Confirm them before you go, especially on public holidays or if you are visiting as a group.
\n
Opening hours
\n
\n
Monday to Saturday: 9.30 am to 7 pm.
\n
Sundays and public holidays: 9.30 am to 1.30 pm.
\n
\n
Admission and prices
\n
\n
General admission: 10 euros.
\n
Reduced admission: 4.50 euros, for groups and children aged 6 to 10.
\n
PassMuseu: the museum accepts this card and offers a discount to holders.
\n
\n
Guided tours
\n
The guided tour lasts about 20 minutes and is offered in English, Spanish, French and Catalan, for groups of up to 25 people. For more information, the museum’s phone number is (+376) 838 338.
\n
How much time to allow
\n
The guided tour is short, but allow a little more if you want to watch the audiovisual and linger at the microscopes. It is a visit you can easily fit into a morning, leaving time for a stroll around the village.
\n
How to get to the Miniature Museum in Ordino: access guide
\n
The museum is in the Edifici Maragda, on Carrer Mossèn Cinto Verdaguer, on the main road into Ordino, next to the CG-3.
\n
Route from Hotel Grau Roig
\n
Follow the CG-2 down towards Encamp and Escaldes-Engordany and from there take the CG-3 up towards La Massana and Ordino. It is a simple route, but in winter it is worth checking the road conditions before leaving, especially if it has snowed. If you want to make the most of the journey, Encamp has the Casa Cristo Ethnographic Museum.
\n
By bus
\n
From Andorra la Vella, line L6 goes to Ordino. It is a handy option if you would rather not drive or if you are in the capital for another reason, such as shopping.
\n
How it fits into your stay
\n
In winter, the high season at Grau Roig, it is an ideal outing for a blustery day or for resting your legs between days on the Grandvalira slopes. If you would like to see more of the country’s culture, you will find more ideas in the routes through Andorra’s villages. Back at the hotel, the spa awaits with its sauna, Turkish bath, jacuzzi and pool, and for dinner there is La Vaquería, El Teatro del Vino, La Marmita or La Fromagerie.
\n","categories":[{"id":"0e8c2633-22cd-52a4-8bfe-e028a5ba997f","name":"Culture","slug":"culture","parentElement":null},{"id":"425a3962-c27d-569c-ae7b-a85f0e6bb381","name":"Adventure","slug":"adventure","parentElement":null}],"acf":{"subtitle":"","lead":"Miniature
