If you have another format in mind, the most useful step is to raise it directly with the hotel team, who can tell you whether it is feasible and on which dates.
\n
Company meetings and group celebrations
\n
Which kinds of gathering work well
\n
The hotel caters for working meetings: team training, team-building sessions, results presentations and product launches. These are formats that benefit from getting out of the office, because here the group can spend the morning in the meeting room and the afternoon in the snow.
\n
For a private celebration, such as an anniversary or a family lunch, it is best to give the number of people and the date from the very beginning. In a hotel of this size, the season and occupancy make a big difference to what can be done.
\n
What about weddings?
\n
If you are thinking of getting married here, speak to the hotel team before making any plans: confirm availability, spaces and number of guests.
\n
The Secret Room and its equipment
\n
The space the hotel describes in detail for events is the Secret Room, a restaurant that can be booked as a private meeting room. It is equipped with:
\n
\n
3,000-lumen HD projector.
\n
100-inch screen.
\n
HDMI, VGA, USB and audio connections.
\n
50 + 50 W sound system.
\n
High-speed wifi.
\n
\n
For breaks there is coffee, tea, juice and light refreshments, and the staff can supply materials for presentations. The hotel also says it adapts the space to what each client needs. The hotel team will tell you the capacity when you check availability.
\n
Dining for your event
\n
Food is one of the hotel’s great strengths, with five spaces that are very different from one another:
\n
\n
La Vaquería: traditional mountain cooking, right on the slopes.
\n
El Teatro del Vino: avant-garde cooking that blends tradition and modernity, with wine in the leading role. It is a small space, with 10 tables according to the MICHELIN Guide.
\n
La Marmita: classic market-led, seasonal cooking.
\n
La Fromagerie: fondues and raclettes, an ideal option for sharing as a group.
\n
Secret Room: the restaurant that doubles as a private room.
\n
\n
The cellar brings together more than 300 wines, cavas and champagnes. If wine is going to play a big part in your event, take a look at our guide to wine tastings in Andorra and ask what options there are for your group. The Copper Bar is another good meeting point for rounding off the day.
\n
Activities to complete the programme
\n
In winter
\n
Winter is the high season and the most striking time for a group. You are in Grandvalira, with 215 km of slopes and 140 runs in total, so skiing takes care of much of the programme without anyone getting in a car. You can read more about that convenience in our article on ski-in ski-out in Andorra.
\n
For non-skiers, the hotel’s website lists several snow activities: snowshoeing, mushing, snowmobiling and ski touring. Group availability and conditions are confirmed case by case, so include them in your first enquiry.
\n
In summer
\n
When the good weather arrives, the backdrop changes. The hotel lists climbing, via ferrata, hiking, horse riding, golf, rafting, 4×4 and quad routes, and helicopter flights. Ask the hotel about group conditions for each activity before adding it to the programme. You can find more ideas in what to do in Andorra.
\n
Spa and accommodation for guests
\n
Spa
\n
The spa has a heated indoor pool, a hot tub, a sauna, a Turkish bath, a relaxation area and a fitness room with Technogym equipment. It opens every day from 10.00 to 21.00, with free entry for hotel guests; under-16s cannot enter between 15.00 and 21.00. Treatments and massages are booked separately from the menu.
\n
During the summer months the Summer Lounge also opens, an outdoor space with loungers, fresh juices, cocktails and a hot tub for up to eight people looking out over the Pyrenees. Ask whether it can be reserved for your group.
\n
Rooms
\n
The hotel offers five room categories: Auténtica, Superior, Romántica, Junior Suite and Suite Deluxe. With 42 rooms in total, a sizeable event can take up a good part of the hotel, so it pays to book well ahead, especially at the height of the ski season. Reception is open 24 hours and there is a Kids Club in case anyone is bringing children.
\n
How to request a quote
\n
Rates and availability for events are confirmed directly with the hotel. For a quicker reply, have the following ready:
\n
\n
Possible dates and alternatives, especially if they fall in the ski season.
\n
Number of attendees and rooms you need.
\n
Format: meeting, meal, family celebration or something else.
\n
Technical and catering requirements, including special diets.
\n
Activities you would like to add.
\n
\n
You can get in touch by phone on +376 75 55 56, by email at info@hotelgrauroig.com or through the meeting rooms and events page.
\n","categories":[{"id":"01807db2-6c8f-5641-a80b-77b94f7ec34e","name":"luxury","slug":"luxury","parentElement":null}],"acf":{"subtitle":"Rooms, food and activities in Grandvalira","lead":"Private events at Hotel Grau Roig: meetings and celebrations in Grandvalira, with the Secret Room, five dining spaces and a spa.","featuredMedia":null,"isFeatured":"no"}}},{"node":{"id":"f6c2e8c3-33dd-5a83-8660-fb4be511b1e3","path":"/en/luxury-car-andorra-mountain-passes/","title":"Drive a luxury car over Andorra’s mountain passes","date":"02 November 2026","content":"
Why drive a luxury car over Andorra’s mountain passes?
\n
Driving a luxury car over Andorra’s mountain passes makes sense for a simple reason: in a country this small, you link bends, changes of altitude and high-mountain views within very few kilometres. And if you are staying at Hotel Grau Roig, in the Grau Roig sector of Grandvalira, the country’s highest pass is right next door. The hotel appears in the MICHELIN Guide, with one Key.
\n
Roads with character
\n
There is no need to plan long stages here. One morning is enough to climb a long pass, drop into a valley and be back for lunch. Altitude is what shapes the day: you go from the villages on the valley floor to roads above 2,000 metres, with changes in temperature and light that you can feel from inside the car.
\n
What to know before you set off
\n
Before leaving, check the traffic and road conditions in Andorra, especially in winter or after a storm. The government publishes road information at mobilitat.ad and the forecast at meteo.ad. Those two one-minute checks can save you from turning round halfway up a pass.
\n
Comforts on your return
\n
Michelin’s listing confirms two details any driver will appreciate: valet parking and electric vehicle charging. Afterwards, the hotel spa has a heated pool, a hydromassage bath, a sauna and a Turkish bath, open from 10 am to 9 pm and free of charge for guests.
\n
Food to round off the day
\n
For dinner there is La Vaquería, serving traditional mountain food at the foot of the slopes; La Marmita, with market-led seasonal cooking; La Fromagerie, for fondues and raclettes; El Teatro del Vino, with a cellar of more than 300 labels; and Secret Room. Drinks are at the Copper Bar. You will find everything on the restaurants page.
\n
Things to do nearby
\n
If you leave the car parked for a day, the hotel’s website lists summer activities such as hiking, climbing, via ferrata, helicopter flights, horse riding, golf, rafting, and 4×4 and quad routes. If off-road driving appeals, take a look at the smugglers’ route by 4×4.
\n
Recommended scenic routes for driving a luxury car in Andorra
\n
These are the roads worth the trip. All of them are paved on Andorran soil, and you can combine them depending on your time and the season.
\n
Route 1: Vall d’Incles, a short escape
\n
The Incles valley, a U-shaped glacial valley between El Tarter and Canillo, is about 10 minutes by car from the hotel. It is a short drive, more for slowing down than for chasing bends. The best plan is to leave the car in the access car park and continue on foot among black pine and fir. From mid-June to early September an electric buggy also runs to the head of the valley.
\n
Route 2: Port d’Envalira, the paved roof of the Pyrenees
\n
The Port d’Envalira reaches 2,408 metres and is considered the highest paved road in the Pyrenees. It links El Pas de la Casa with the rest of the country and has featured several times in the Tour de France and the Vuelta a España. A toll tunnel of almost 3 kilometres, opened in 2002, avoids the climb. To enjoy the drive, take the top road, provided it is open and dry.
\n
Route 3: Coll d’Ordino, from Canillo to Ordino
\n
The Coll d’Ordino, at 1,981 metres, climbs from Canillo over 8.9 kilometres, with 458 metres of ascent, an average gradient of 5.15% and sections of up to 10%. It is a steady pass that crosses from one valley to another. To extend the drive, take the CG-3 from Ordino towards Ordino Arcalís, a road that climbs up the valley to the ski area.
\n
Route 4: Coll de Beixalís, from Encamp to Anyós
\n
The Coll de Beixalís, at 1,795 metres, links Encamp with Anyós, in La Massana. It is well known in cycling: the Tour de France included it in 2016 and 2021. Climb calmly and carefully, as you are quite likely to meet cyclists.
\n
Route 5: Port de Cabús, in good weather only
\n
The Port de Cabús, at 2,308 metres, is the wildest road in the country. On the Andorran side it is the paved CG-4, with 17.8 kilometres from La Massana and gradients of up to 11.7%. The last 2 or 3 kilometres have no crash barriers. The descent towards Tor, on the Spanish side, is unpaved, so turn round at the top. Driving is prohibited when there is snow; the recommended period is June to October.
\n
Lakes worth a detour
\n
Engolasters, at 1,622 metres, lies near Escaldes-Engordany, close to the church of Sant Miquel d’Engolasters. The Tristaina lakes, on the other hand, cannot be reached by car: the last stretch is a moderate walk. There are more ideas in our guide to Andorra’s glacial lakes.
\n
Benefits of hiring a luxury car for your trips around Andorra
\n
Hiring a luxury car for a few days in Andorra gives you something very specific: control over your schedule. Distances are short, but plenty of places are not served by public transport at the time you would like.
\n
Freedom over your timing
\n
Passes are best enjoyed early, with little traffic and good light. With your own car you decide when to climb, where to stop for a photo and when to head back in time for the spa.
\n
Comfort on long climbs
\n
On climbs of several kilometres you notice an engine with torque in reserve and good suspension, just as you notice comfortable seats when linking one bend after another. A well-tuned automatic gearbox also makes the pace of mountain driving more pleasant.
\n
Where to hire
\n
International companies such as Europcar operate in Andorra la Vella, and several comparison sites show premium categories. Fleets change a lot depending on the date, so ask about the specific model when booking, as well as the tyres fitted and whether snow chains are allowed.
\n
Business and pleasure
\n
If you are here for work, a car lets you fit in meetings in Andorra la Vella or Escaldes-Engordany and then head up to the mountains for the night. The hotel also has meeting and events rooms.
\n
Top luxury car brands for driving Andorra’s mountain passes
\n
More than the brand, three things matter here: traction, ground clearance and tyres. These are the most common high-end options, with what each brings to the mountains. Always confirm availability with the hire company.
\n
Maserati: elegance and power
\n
The Levante and the Grecale, the brand’s SUVs, are the most sensible choices for Andorra. They combine Maserati’s sporty character with more height than a saloon, which is useful if you meet a speed bump or leftover snow.
\n
Porsche: precision through the bends
\n
The 911 is probably the most enjoyable car for Envalira or the Coll d’Ordino on dry tarmac. If you are coming in the snow season, an SUV such as the Macan or the Cayenne gives you more margin; confirm its drive system with the hire company.
\n
Ferrari: for dry days
\n
A Ferrari sports car calls for good weather and a clean road. Watch the ground clearance on garage ramps and speed bumps. The exception is the Purosangue, with four doors.
\n
Audi: technology and balance
\n
The Audi range is a well-balanced option for going back and forth between the valley and the high mountains in any season. The RS models add power without losing comfort on longer journeys.
\n
BMW: dynamism and prestige
\n
The M models combine dynamism with everyday usability. A saloon or SUV from the brand works well on twisting roads and is comfortable on the journey here.
\n
Tips to get the most out of driving a luxury car in Andorra
\n
Andorra is easy to get around, but the mountains set the rules. These tips will help you avoid the most common problems.
\n
Winter: high season, strict rules
\n
From November to April most people come to ski, and with good reason: Grandvalira adds up to 215 kilometres of slopes, and the hotel sits at the foot of the Grau Roig runs. If you arrive by car, special equipment is compulsory on the entire road network from 1 November to 15 May: winter tyres on all four wheels, with at least 3 mm of tread recommended, or chains on the driven wheels when the tarmac is covered in snow, with a maximum speed of 50 km/h.
\n
Learn the alert levels
\n
\n
Yellow: snow on the road, equipment compulsory and a maximum of 60 km/h.
\n
Orange: ice on the road, maximum of 50 km/h.
\n
Red: very adverse conditions, chains compulsory for all vehicles and a maximum of 30 km/h.
\n
Black: road impassable and traffic prohibited.
\n
\n
Prepare the car
\n
In cold weather, add 0.2 bar to the recommended pressure, check the battery, antifreeze and wipers, and practise fitting the chains before you need them. Never overtake a snowplough at work. And with a low-slung sports car, watch out for snow banks when parking.
\n
Drive sensibly
\n
Climb without hurrying, give cyclists room in summer and use lay-bys for photos. On long descents, shift down so you do not punish the brakes. Take water and something warm too: it can be much colder up top than in the valley.
\n
Parking and charging
\n
The hotel has valet parking and electric charging, according to its Michelin listing. If you drive an electric car, bear in mind that cold and long climbs reduce range, so set off with charge to spare.
\n
Make the road part of the trip
\n
If it is your first time, start with Envalira and save Cabús for a clear summer day. To round off your stay with other plans, see what to do in Andorra.
\n","categories":[{"id":"01807db2-6c8f-5641-a80b-77b94f7ec34e","name":"luxury","slug":"luxury","parentElement":null}],"acf":{"subtitle":"Real passes, winter rules and tips for enjoying the road","lead":"Luxury car in Andorra: Envalira, Ordino, Beixalís and Cabús passes, winter rules and where to unwind back at Grau Roig.","featuredMedia":null,"isFeatured":"no"}}},{"node":{"id":"649996ab-9f8f-5129-8374-4d00e2706764","path":"/en/art-classes-andorra/","title":"Art classes in Andorra: courses, galleries and open-air sculpture","date":"02 November 2026","content":"
Art classes in Andorra: what actually exists
\n
If you are looking for art classes in Andorra, it helps to be clear about one thing from the start: what is on offer is not really designed as a tourist product. These are municipal courses and activities run by local associations, with small groups and a calendar that follows the school year. What you can reach during a stay is an art school that sells blocks of hours, astrophotography outings, galleries with plenty of personality and a collection of contemporary sculpture spread across every parish.
\n
Here is what there is, where to find it and how to ask about a place, so that you can put together your own creative break from up in the mountains.
\n
The Escola d’Art in Andorra la Vella
\n
Disciplines for adults
\n
The leading option is the Escola d’Art run by the Comú of Andorra la Vella, at the La Llacuna Cultural Centre (carrer Mossèn Cinto Verdaguer, 4). Its programme for the 2026-27 academic year offers workshops for anyone aged 15 or over, in an open weekly format and nearly always in two-hour blocks:
\n
\n
Painting and drawing, to work at your own pace.
\n
Ceramics, one of the most hands-on disciplines on the programme.
\n
Printmaking and jewellery, two techniques that are hard to find outside a school with its own workshop.
\n
Life drawing, with a maximum of 10 students.
\n
Furniture restoration.
\n
\n
More advanced students can show their work at La Llacuna itself, so it is worth looking at what is on the walls even if you are only dropping by.
\n
Photography and film
\n
Photography has its own section: using the camera, controlling light, film photography, digital editing in Lightroom and personal projects. The single-subject courses take a maximum of seven people. There is also a film history course, with themes such as the spy thriller and Korean and Japanese cinema.
\n
Prices and blocks of hours
\n
According to the 2026-27 brochure, enrolment for the adult workshops costs €89 and the monthly fee is €40 for one day a week. For someone passing through, the blocks of hours are the most interesting option: 10 hours for €103.50 or 20 hours for €142, to use at your own pace and on a timetable agreed with the teacher, subject to availability.
\n
How to enrol
\n
You enrol at the centre itself, by phone (730 037), by email (lallacuna@comuandorra.ad) or in person. The workshops are aimed at people who live in the country, so before planning anything, ask whether you can join with a block of hours during your stay and which dates are available. Read the full Escola d’Art programme before you get in touch.
\n
Astrophotography in La Massana
\n
For an activity that fits more easily into a trip, look towards La Massana. The parish photographers’ association runs introductory astrophotography workshops: experienced photographers explain the principles and techniques, then accompany participants along the area’s astronomical trails. The parish is recognised as a Starlight Reserve and Tourist Destination thanks to its low light pollution.
\n
In winter, from 1 December, there are also night-time snowshoe outings to Coll de la Botella on Fridays, Saturdays and public holidays. Ask at the La Massana Tourist Office (+376 835 693 or turisme@comumassana.ad). You will find more details in our guide to stargazing in Andorra. If landscape photography is more your thing, add our photography routes around Andorra.
\n
Galleries and exhibition spaces where you can see art
\n
Private galleries
\n
\n
Galeria Alta, in Anyós: specialises in photography by international artists.
\n
Set Art Gallery, in Santa Coloma since 2003: small-format work designed to be lived with at home.
\n
Pilar Riberaygua Gallery, in Andorra la Vella: contemporary art, founded in 1985.
\n
Desig(n) Gallery, in Andorra la Vella: one-off handmade pieces.
\n
ART LAB Andorra: contemporary art with a particular focus on pop art.
\n
\n
Before setting off, check the opening hours directly with each gallery.
\n
Public exhibition spaces near Grau Roig
\n
The closest to the hotel are the Pas de la Casa exhibition halls, at the tourist office: they host temporary shows across different disciplines and a permanent display of old photographs of the town. It makes a fine choice for a snowy afternoon. Further down the valley, the Comú d’Encamp hall exhibits work by national artists.
\n
In Escaldes-Engordany, the Art Centre (CAEE) is the permanent home of the work of sculptor Josep Viladomat, with temporary exhibitions on the second floor and free guided tours with limited places. If you come across recommendations for the Carmen Thyssen Museum, bear in mind that it is listed as closed until further notice.
\n
Open-air sculpture, with no opening hours or tickets
\n
One of the best art lessons in Andorra is out on the street. In 1991, a symposium marking the 25th anniversary of the CASS left eight contemporary works dotted around the country, by artists such as Mauro Staccioli, Dennis Oppenheim and Carlos Cruz-Díez. Later, in 2002, another international symposium selected the sculptures on the Iron Route in Ordino, with pieces by Alberto Carneiro, Rachid Khimoune and Mark Brusse.
\n
In Andorra la Vella, the sculpture park on carrer Prat de la Creu brings together work by Miquel Barceló, Manolo Valdés and Jaume Plensa, among others. You will find the full route in open-air sculpture in Andorra.
\n
Early art and crafts
\n
The country has more than 30 Romanesque churches, some with mural paintings, such as Sant Martí de la Cortinada. You can round off the visit with Andorra’s sacred art. To see local makers, the Mercat de la Vall takes place on the first Saturday of each month, from spring to early autumn, in the old quarter of Andorra la Vella.
\n
How to plan your creative break from Grau Roig
\n
In winter
\n
Winter is a good time to combine snow and culture. The Escola d’Art courses are in full swing, and a morning on the slopes leaves the afternoon free to head down to a gallery or visit the CAEE. The hotel is right on the slopes, in the Grau Roig sector of Grandvalira.
\n
At the hotel
\n
To unwind afterwards, there is the spa with its heated pool, sauna and Turkish bath, plus five dining spaces: La Vaquería, El Teatro del Vino, La Marmita, La Fromagerie and Secret Room. What exists is better for anyone planning a trip: several regular markets, nearly all in Andorra la Vella, each with its own date and character. The trick is knowing which one coincides with your stay.
\n
The markets you can visit
\n
\n
Mercat de la Vall: first Saturday of every month, from May to October, in the historic centre of Andorra la Vella.
\n
The Fira craft market: during the Andorra la Vella Fair, along the riverside promenade.
\n
Festa Major market: first Saturday in August, during the town festival.
\n
Sant Jordi fair: on 23 April.
\n
Poblet de Nadal: Christmas market in Plaça del Poble.
\n
Fira de Nadal in Ordino: in December, in Ordino.
\n
\n
The most craft-focused: Mercat de la Vall
\n
It has been held since 2016 and reached its eleventh edition in 2026. It is organised by the parish council with the historic centre traders’ association, Andorran agricultural producers and artisans, and the La Xarranca visual artists’ association. It is open to artisans, artists and food producers with original, high-quality, locally created goods. That is why it comes closest to what you picture when you think of a craft market: local produce, antiques and handmade crafts.
\n
Where they take place
\n
Almost everything happens in Andorra la Vella, which you reach by road from Grau Roig. It is best to plan your visit as a half-day outing and combine it with time in the town. Before you go, read our article on road conditions, especially in winter.
\n
Unique local products you will find in Andorra
\n
Each market has its own offering, so it helps to know what to look for at each one. The details below come from the Andorra la Vella tourist office.
\n
Food and local produce
\n
At Mercat de la Vall you will find local goods from food producers. At the Fira market there are local products and artisan food, along with crêpes, churros and sweets. The Festa Major market also has food among its stalls.
\n
Local wine and beer
\n
Andorra makes wine, though many people do not realise it. Visit Andorra lists wineries such as Borda Sabaté 1944, Casa Auvinyà, Casa Beal, Celler Mas Berenguer and Casus Belli. There is also a local beer, Alpha, in Arinsal. These are not market products as such, but they fit if you want to take something from the country home. We cover them in wine tourism in Andorra.
\n
Crafts and objects
\n
At the Festa Major there is costume jewellery, textiles and handmade goods, mostly from local stallholders, although exhibitors from other regions may take part. The Fira de Nadal in Ordino has handicrafts, Christmas decorations, wooden toys, ceramics and jewellery. And at Mercat de la Vall, antiques.
\n
Books and roses
\n
The Sant Jordi fair is another world altogether: books, roses, bookmarks, old books and paper and cloth flowers, with bookshops, florists, social organisations and schools.
\n
A complete guide to visiting Andorra’s craft market
\n
With so many different markets, the best approach is to choose according to the dates of your trip.
\n
In spring and summer
\n
If you are coming between May and October, note the first Saturday of the month: that is Mercat de la Vall day. In August, that Saturday also coincides with the Festa Major, and the town is livelier. If you come in April, the 23rd is Sant Jordi. You can use the trip down to see the historic centre and, while you are at it, set aside another day for the hiking routes or the Pessons lakes, which start from Grau Roig.
\n
In winter, the high season
\n
This is when skiing and markets fit together best. Poblet de Nadal is set up in Plaça del Poble from late November until the end of the festive season, with crafts, food, art, children’s workshops and live music. In recent editions, a giant tió, the Catalan Christmas log, has also awaited children at one end of the square. Dates change every year, so confirm them on the tourism website before you go. The Fira de Nadal in Ordino, smaller and more craft-based, is concentrated in December on Carrer Major, Plaça Major and Plaça de la Closa.
\n
A good plan: a morning on the Grandvalira slopes and an afternoon at the market with the Christmas lights on.
\n
Practical tips
\n
\n
Always check the date: these are regular markets, not permanent ones.
\n
Bring some cash just in case, as not every stall at a market works the same way.
\n
If you are crossing the border, check the customs limits before loading up on goods.
\n
Ask who made what you are buying. At these markets, with luck, the maker will tell you.
\n
\n
The benefits of buying at Andorra’s craft market
\n
Andorra is famous for its shops, but the experience of a market is very different from that of a shopping avenue.
\n
Direct contact with the maker
\n
Mercat de la Vall is designed for artisans, artists and producers with local creations. That gives you something a large retailer rarely offers: talking to the person who made the product.
\n
A complement to your shopping
\n
The Fira market links the fairground with the Avinguda Meritxell shopping area via plaça de la Rotonda, so you can easily combine the two. If more classic shopping is your thing, we have guides to shopping in Andorra and buying perfume in Andorra.
\n
A way of seeing the town
\n
Mercat de la Vall takes you into the historic centre, a part of Andorra la Vella that many visitors who come only to shop overlook. And it is easier to understand what craft means here if you first visit the Casa Cristo ethnographic museum.
\n
The most popular craft products in Andorra
\n
Without sales data you cannot draw up a serious ranking, but these categories come up time and again at the country’s markets.
\n
Costume jewellery and jewellery
\n
You will find them at the Festa Major and the Fira de Nadal in Ordino. They make a good souvenir if you are travelling light.
\n
Ceramics and wooden toys
\n
These are typical of the Ordino market in December, and an easy gift to take home in the middle of the Christmas season.
\n
Textiles
\n
You will find them at the Festa Major market. Ask about their origin, because exhibitors from other regions may also attend.
\n
Artisan food
\n
It features at nearly all of them. If you would then like to enjoy mountain cuisine at a proper table, Hotel Grau Roig, listed in the MICHELIN Guide, has several options: market and seasonal cuisine at La Marmita, fondues and raclettes at La Fromagerie, traditional food at La Vaquería and wine pairings drawing on more than 300 labels at El Teatro del Vino. And at the end of the day, the hotel spa, with its heated pool, sauna and Turkish bath, is free for guests.
\n
Discover Andorra’s iconic places for landscape photography
\n
Beyond the longer routes, there are specific spots that deliver very good results with little effort.
\n
Mountain viewpoints
\n
The Roc del Quer is a platform overlooking the Canillo valley, very easy to include in a day on the road. The Tristaina Solar Viewpoint, in Ordino, offers views of the lakes, the Ordino valley and France. You will find more ideas in our panoramic viewpoints route.
\n
Urban Andorra
\n
According to Visit Andorra, the Pont de París, seen from Plaça de la Rotonda with its light fountains, is among the most photographed sights in the country. And in Andorra la Vella, Dalí’s sculpture Noblesse du temps lets you frame the river, the mountains and the Caldea tower in the background.
\n
A phenomenon for your diary
\n
If you are coming in summer, the news outlet Alto reports an alignment from 6 to 8 August: the rising sun shines through the hole in Pic d’Arcalís. It is a very rare sight, but check the access and conditions before heading up in the dark.
\n
Lakes near the hotel
\n
Very close to Grau Roig are the Pessons lakes, a convenient choice if you do not want to go far. The Pessons cirque can also be seen from the terrace at La Vaquería, so you can take photos while you eat.
\n
Where to rest
\n
The hotel has five room types, from Auténtica to Suite Deluxe. Before booking, ask what views each one has if they matter to you: on a photography trip, the view from the window matters.
\n
Dining to recharge
\n
After a day on the trail, you have five dining spaces: La Vaquería, El Teatro del Vino, La Marmita, La Fromagerie and Secret Room, plus the Copper Bar for reviewing your photos over a drink. Check which ones are open on your dates and book in good time.
\n
Photography routes in Andorra: tips for getting the best shot
\n
A few simple decisions make all the difference in the mountains, whatever your equipment.
\n
1. Prepare the right equipment
\n
Prioritise what you will really carry: a camera body, a wide-angle lens for landscapes and a light telephoto are usually enough. Add spare batteries, memory cards and a cloth to clean the lens. If you plan to shoot at night or use long exposures, bring a tripod.
\n
2. Make the most of the morning light
\n
The first hours of the day offer soft light, ideal for landscapes. If you are going to do one of the hiking routes before dawn, check the access and take a head torch. Not all high mountain roads are always open, or equally easy in the dark.
\n
3. Rest well between outings
\n
The mountains are tiring, and your photos suffer for it. Set aside an afternoon for the spa or for reviewing your shots so far; you will see more clearly what you still need to photograph.
\n
4. Go with someone if you do not know the area
\n
If you want to explore lesser-known areas, hire a local mountain guide rather than improvising. In winter, the hotel’s website also mentions guides for snowshoe outings: ask at reception how they are arranged.
\n
5. Enjoy the snowy landscapes
\n
In the snow season, Andorra changes completely. Snow fools the light meter, so raise the exposure compensation to stop it looking grey. Protect your batteries from the cold by keeping them close to your body, and let the camera acclimatise when you go back indoors to avoid condensation.
\n
6. Plan your journeys
\n
Andorra is small, but mountain journeys take longer than they look. Group your spots by valley and check the state of the roads before you set off, especially in winter.
\n
The best seasons and times for photography in Andorra
\n
Each season offers something different, and it is worth choosing your route according to the time of year.
\n
Spring and autumn: colour
\n
In spring you will find green meadows and snow still on the peaks, and in autumn, red and golden tones in the forests. If this time of year appeals to you, read our guide to Andorra in autumn.
\n
Summer: sunrise and sunset
\n
The days are long, so there is more leeway for planning your outings. Get up early for lake routes such as Tristaina, and avoid the middle of the day, when the light is harsher and there are more people on the trails.
\n
Winter: the snowy landscape
\n
This is the high season at Grau Roig. You can photograph freshly fallen snow first thing in the morning, skiers on the Grandvalira slopes or snowshoe outings. To take photos on the snow, wear technical clothing and thin gloves that let you handle the camera.
\n
At night: the stars
\n
With clear skies and little moon, the mountain sky deserves an outing. You will find more information in our guide to stargazing.
\n
Recommended equipment for your photography routes in Andorra
\n
There is no need to carry everything. This is what you will use most in the mountains.
\n
Camera and lenses
\n
A wide-angle lens will serve you for valleys and lakes, and a telephoto for isolating peaks and details. If you use your phone, take a small tripod and a power bank.
\n
Filters and accessories
\n
A polariser helps with reflections on water and in the sky, and a neutral density filter lets you lengthen exposures on rivers and waterfalls. Add a waterproof cover in case the weather changes.
\n
Clothing and footwear
\n
Wear mountain boots, layers and a waterproof jacket. At altitude the weather changes quickly, even in summer. Check the forecast before setting off and turn back if it gets worse.
\n
Backpack and safety
\n
Use a comfortable backpack with water, some food and a map. Tell someone your route and check your coverage: it can fail in some valleys.
\n
Backups
\n
Download your photos every night to a drive or the cloud. With the hotel’s connection you can get it done before dinner, so you do not risk the day’s work.
\n","categories":[{"id":"0e8c2633-22cd-52a4-8bfe-e028a5ba997f","name":"Culture","slug":"culture","parentElement":null},{"id":"425a3962-c27d-569c-ae7b-a85f0e6bb381","name":"Adventure","slug":"adventure","parentElement":null}],"acf":{"subtitle":"Lakes, viewpoints and towns: where and when to get your camera out","lead":"Photography routes in Andorra: Madriu, Tristaina, viewpoints and seasonal tips for shooting the landscape, in winter too.","featuredMedia":null,"isFeatured":"no"}}},{"node":{"id":"d62082c8-7eb8-50b9-b03d-e1e3c7a4de52","path":"/en/way-to-france-from-andorra-near-border/","title":"The way to France from Andorra: what to see near the border","date":"02 November 2026","content":"
What to see on the way to France from Andorra: key stops
\n
From Grau Roig, the natural way out towards France is via Pas de la Casa. It is not a long stretch, but there is plenty to see if you are not in a hurry: a record-breaking pass, a lake shared by two countries, French mountain villages and a spa town with centuries of history. These are the stops worth knowing, from south to north. If you are staying at Hotel Grau Roig, listed in the MICHELIN Guide, all of them are within reach for a day trip.
\n
Port d’Envalira
\n
At 2,408 m, this is the highest paved road in the Pyrenees, linking Pas de la Casa with the rest of Andorra. It is worth driving up at least once for the views. If the weather is against you, there is the Envalira toll tunnel, opened in 2002, nearly 3 km long and at around 2,000 m above sea level.
\n
Pas de la Casa
\n
This is the gateway to Andorra from France. It belongs to the parish of Encamp, like Grau Roig, and stands at over 2,000 m. In winter it is part of Grandvalira, and at any time of year it serves as a shopping street. If you plan to take something home, check our guide to shopping in Andorra first.
\n
L’Hospitalet-près-l’Andorre
\n
Now in France, this is where the N22 begins, the road that climbs to Pas de la Casa and connects with the Envalira tunnel. It has a railway station, linked by bus to Pas de la Casa, which makes it a useful option if you are travelling without a car.
\n
Must-see historic places near the Andorran border
\n
The history of this border is best read on the other side, in the Ariège valley. First, though, it is worth clearing up a common mistake: some Andorran monuments cited as part of this route are not on it at all.
\n
Ax-les-Thermes and the Bassin des Ladres
\n
This is the main stop on the French side. Ax-les-Thermes stands at 720 m, about 35 km north-east of Andorra la Vella, where the Oriège, Ariège and Lauze rivers meet. The Romans already used its waters, and today it has around 60 sulphurous springs between 18 and 78 °C feeding three thermal spas.
\n
The most curious sight is the Bassin des Ladres, or lepers’ pool: a public basin built in 1260 by Roger IV, Count of Foix, fed with water at around 77 °C. According to tradition, it was built to treat soldiers returning from the Crusades with leprosy. It is a registered historic monument.
\n
The trail of the escape lines
\n
This valley also played its part in the Second World War. Many escape routes towards Andorra started at Ussat-les-Bains, and the Dutch-Paris line passed through Foix. We tell the story in the freedom route in Andorra.
\n
What lies in the other direction
\n
The church of Santa Coloma is one of the oldest monuments in the country, pre-Romanesque in origin (8th to 9th centuries), with its current appearance and bell tower dating from a 12th-century remodelling. But it is in Andorra la Vella, in the opposite direction. The Sanctuary of Meritxell, in Canillo, about 20 km from Pas de la Casa, also lies towards the interior. If they interest you, give them another day with our guide to Romanesque churches.
\n
Unique experiences on the route to France from Andorra
\n
Beyond seeing villages from the car, a couple of outings justify the trip in their own right.
\n
Bathing in thermal water
\n
Ax-les-Thermes is the classic choice. At the Bassin des Ladres, every year on St John’s Day, locals bathe after daubing themselves with ash. If you would prefer a fuller circuit without leaving Andorra, there is Caldea, and at the hotel itself, the spa with its heated pool.
\n
Skiing on both sides
\n
In the snow season, which runs roughly from November to April, Grau Roig has the Grandvalira slopes right at hand. If you fancy a change of scene for a day, on the other side is Ax 3 Domaines, above Ax-les-Thermes, with around 75 km of runs according to figures published some years ago. Check the latest information on its website before you go.
\n
Going by train
\n
The railway line from Foix passes through Ax-les-Thermes and continues south through Mérens-les-Vals to L’Hospitalet-près-l’Andorre. For anyone travelling as far as Toulouse, it is an alternative to driving through the mountains.
\n
Parks and nature on the way between Andorra and France
\n
One correction is needed here: the Comapedrosa Natural Park, home to the country’s highest peak (2,942 m), is in La Massana, next to Pal Arinsal. It is not on the way to France. If you want to see it, that is a different trip, at the other end of Andorra. What you have on this route is just as good and much closer.
\n
Pessons lakes
\n
The route starts at El Cubil, in the Grau Roig ski area itself. The official figures are 5.95 km, 707 m of ascent and 3 to 6 hours, passing Estany Primer, Rodó, Meligar, les Fonts and Cap dels Pessons. You will find all the details in the Pessons lakes.
\n
Estany de les Abelletes
\n
This lake marks the natural border, with part of it in French territory, and can be reached from Pas de la Casa on a walk of about 3 km there and back. It is probably the simplest way to set foot on the border.
\n
Bésines and Lanoux
\n
To the north, in France, the Coll de Coma d’Anyell (2,470 m) links the Bésines valley with the Lanoux lake. The Porteille des Bésines can be reached via the Bésines refuge from the south, or from the north via Estagnas. These are high-mountain routes and should be planned with a map.
\n
In winter
\n
Avalanches sometimes close the N20 below the Col de Puymorens, so check the road conditions before setting off. With snow on the ground, snowshoes and snowmobiles are two more ways to enjoy the landscape without straying far from Grau Roig.
\n
Food and culture on the journey to France from Andorra
\n
Before you leave, at the hotel
\n
Start or end the trip at the hotel. At La Marmita you have classic market and seasonal cuisine; at La Vaquería, traditional mountain food by the slopes; at La Fromagerie, fondues and raclettes. El Teatro del Vino is the most avant-garde option and focuses on pairing, with a cellar of more than 300 wines, cavas and champagnes. There are also Secret Room, the Copper Bar and the Summer Lounge.
\n
Andorra, before crossing
\n
If you have time, you can visit Andorra’s villages before heading north. Here is what you can really do, how to book and what to bear in mind.
\n
Why choose a snowmobile at Grau Roig?
\n
A simple activity for almost everyone
\n
Grau Roig, in the Grandvalira ski area, is the leading sector for snowmobiling in Andorra. According to Visit Andorra, the activity is aimed at over-18s and is simple enough for children to join in with an adult. You do not need any previous snow experience, which makes it a good option if someone in your group does not ski.
\n
Guided rides for two
\n
The most common format is a guided outing for two people on one snowmobile, lasting 30, 60 or 120 minutes. A professional guide adapts the route to your level and preferences, and you can swap drivers halfway.
\n
Forest and high mountain scenery
\n
The hotel’s snowmobile activity runs through the forests of Grau Roig. The scenery is pine, snow and Pyrenean peaks, with the Pessons cirque close by. If you want to know more about the area, have a look at our ski slopes.
\n
Night rides
\n
There are also night rides for two people, lasting 30 or 60 minutes, on request. The hotel’s page mentions outings under a full moon or clear skies. At night the cold bites and the snow looks completely different. It is the most striking version, and it is worth booking well ahead.
\n
Snowmobile options at Grau Roig
\n
In Andorra you cannot ride a snowmobile wherever you like. The law on mountain resorts generally bans motorised traffic in the ski area in winter, except for activities run by the resort or its concession holders. That is why you will not find unrestricted routes across the country: these are authorised circuits and trails.
\n
Which routes are available
\n
\n
Guided outing: 30, 60 or 120 minutes for two people, with the route adapted to your level.
\n
Marked trail: if you prefer, you can follow a signposted route on your own.
\n
Night ride: 30 or 60 minutes for two people, on request.
\n
Children’s ride: 10 minutes, from age 6 and with an adult. Younger children cannot take part in this format.
\n
Mini circuit: for children aged 3 to 11, who ride on their own, at Kid Forest and Grau Roig.
\n
\n
What you cannot do
\n
Snowmobiles do not go into the Madriu valley. It is a valley for walkers only, where motor vehicles are banned, and the same goes for the Ensagents access. If anyone offers you that route, be wary.
\n
How to book
\n
The hotel arranges the activity along with your accommodation and looks for the best available time. You can get in touch on +376 75 55 56, at info@hotelgrauroig.com or by WhatsApp. If you are not staying there, the activity is also sold in the Grau Roig sector through Grandvalira and operators such as Rocroi.
\n
What else you can combine with a snowmobile ride
\n
Dinner in the mountains
\n
The operator Rocroi lists in its evening programme a 40-minute double snowmobile ride with dinner in a mountain restaurant at Grau Roig. Our article on dinners in refuges and in the mountains sets out the real options and which ones depend on the season.
\n
Other snow activities
\n
If you want more, you can try mushing or a snowshoe outing in the same area. They are slower-paced activities that go well with a day on a snowmobile. According to Visit Andorra, some Grandvalira passes also combine several snow activities in one day, such as the Gold Adult, with 15 minutes on a snowmobile for two, or the Premium Adult, which adds mushing. Each pass is valid for one day only and it is worth arriving early, because latecomers join an activity already under way.
\n
Unwinding after the snow
\n
After the cold, all you want is to warm up. If you are staying at Hotel Grau Roig, featured in the MICHELIN Guide, you have the spa and the restaurants just steps away: La Vaquería for mountain fare, La Fromagerie for fondues and raclettes, or La Marmita for market-led cuisine. And if you would prefer a larger thermal circuit, Caldea is a short drive away.
\n
Tips for enjoying your snowmobile ride in Andorra
\n
Clothing
\n
Dress as if you were going skiing: several layers, waterproof trousers, gloves, a neck warmer and goggles. On a snowmobile the wind feels stronger than you might expect, especially at night. When you book, ask what equipment is included and whether a helmet is provided.
\n
Requirements
\n
Before you book, confirm the conditions for driving, any weight or minimum age limits for each format and whether a driving licence is required, because the pages we consulted do not specify them. It is better to know beforehand than to be surprised at the base.
\n
When to go
\n
The activity depends on the snow and the weather, and the ski season usually runs from November to April. At Christmas and Easter and at weekends, book in advance. If the forecast shows strong wind or storms, ask before setting off and stay flexible about the date.
\n
Riding
\n
Listen to the initial briefing, keep your distance from the snowmobile in front and stay on the route. These machines are heavy, and it helps to lean your body into the bends. Go at a pace that lets you enjoy it, especially if you have a passenger. If you are unsure on any stretch, brake and follow the guide’s instructions. In an emergency, call 112.
\n","categories":[{"id":"01807db2-6c8f-5641-a80b-77b94f7ec34e","name":"luxury","slug":"luxury","parentElement":null}],"acf":{"subtitle":"What you can really do on a snowmobile at Grandvalira","lead":"Snowmobiling at Grau Roig, Andorra: guided rides from 30 to 120 minutes, night outings, options for children and how to book in winter.","featuredMedia":null,"isFeatured":"no"}}},{"node":{"id":"4edd31b8-f805-5ce6-8b9c-29de8b45e9ae","path":"/en/thermal-waters-escaldes-engordany/","title":"Visiting the natural thermal waters of Escaldes-Engordany","date":"02 November 2026","content":"
A guide to visiting the thermal waters of Escaldes-Engordany
\n
Escaldes-Engordany owes its name and much of its history to the hot water that comes out of the mountain. There is no site called the “thermal springs” that you buy a ticket for: you enjoy the thermal water in specific places, chiefly Caldea and certain hotels in the parish, and you can see it at the Roc del Metge spring. This guide explains what is available and how to plan it.
\n
If you are staying at Hotel Grau Roig, which appears in the MICHELIN Guide, bear in mind that Escaldes is half an hour away by car. The hotel has its own spa, with a sauna, Turkish bath, jacuzzi, pool and gym, but no thermal waters: for that you need to head down to the valley.
\n
Where the water comes from
\n
A large geological fault runs through Escaldes-Engordany, and thermal water rises through it. The best-known spring is Roc del Metge, named after a French doctor who owned the land. According to Visit Andorra, the water is sulphurous and sodic and emerges at 68-71°C, among the highest temperatures in Europe for a spring of this type.
\n
A long history
\n
The Gran Enciclopèdia Catalana records that the Romans already knew about the properties of these waters, and that the place name comes from the “fonts d’aigües calentes”, the hot springs. Those springs turned the town into a well-known spa. Today it forms a continuous urban area with Andorra la Vella, at an altitude of about 1,050 metres.
\n
Benefits of the thermal waters
\n
The waters of Escaldes have long been associated with rest and looking after the body. Visit Andorra links them to joint pain, rheumatism, circulatory problems and stress, but it is best to take this for what it is: a thermal tradition, not a guaranteed medical treatment.
\n
What you can expect
\n
\n
Relaxation: hot water, jets and contrasts in temperature help release tension, which is welcome after skiing or walking in the mountains.
\n
A sense of wellbeing for the skin: sulphurous waters have a particular texture and a characteristic smell, which you will notice near the spring.
\n
Switching off: a couple of hours of water and steam make a good break on a busy trip.
\n
\n
When to check first
\n
If you have a cardiovascular condition, are pregnant or are undergoing treatment, consult your doctor before using saunas, hot baths or thermal circuits.
\n
Where to bathe in thermal waters
\n
These are the options genuinely available in Escaldes-Engordany.
\n
Caldea
\n
In 1987 the Comú of Escaldes-Engordany launched the project to make use of the thermal waters, and Caldea opened on 26 March 1994. It was designed by the French architect Jean-Michel Ruols, and its 80-metre glass tower is the tallest building in Andorra. In its first 25 years it welcomed more than 8 million visitors.
\n
Inside you will find indoor and outdoor lagoons, hydromassage pools, a sauna, a hammam, a massage area and places to eat. For more detail, read our guide to Caldea.
\n
Inúu and Likids
\n
Inúu is the quietest part of the complex, for over-16s, with indoor and outdoor lagoons, waterfalls, swan-neck jets, a jacuzzi and treatment rooms. Likids is designed for children aged 3 to 8, with activities led by instructors. If you are travelling as a family, these two areas let you organise your time very differently.
\n
Hotel Termes Carlemany
\n
In the centre of Escaldes, Termes Carlemany takes water from the Roc del Metge spring and offers thermal water in its rooms, a spa, jacuzzi, Turkish bath and Vichy showers. According to Visit Andorra, it also has an outdoor thermal pool at 27°C. If you are not staying there, ask whether non-residents can use the facilities.
\n
The Roc del Metge spring
\n
This is not a place to bathe, but somewhere to see where it all begins. Visit Andorra says you can get close to the water and touch it, but be careful: it emerges at a very high temperature, so keep a close eye on children and approach it with caution.
\n
How to get there from Grau Roig
\n
From Grau Roig, take the CG-2 south and drive down through Encamp. Coming along this road you reach Escaldes-Engordany before Andorra la Vella, so there is no need to cross the capital. The drive to Caldea takes about half an hour in good weather.
\n
In winter, check the state of the roads before setting off, and allow for heavier traffic at weekends. If you leave the car in the centre, much of what there is to see in Escaldes can be reached on foot.
\n
Tips for your visit
\n
Booking
\n
At Caldea it is best to buy your ticket online in advance, especially at weekends, during the ski season and in August. Check prices and opening hours on its website, as they change with the season.
\n
What to bring
\n
A swimming costume and flip-flops are the basics. Before you go, check the centre’s rules on swimming caps, towels and lockers, as some items can be hired.
\n
The best winter plan
\n
Winter, from November to April, is Andorra’s high season. A good plan is to ski in the morning on the Grandvalira slopes and head down to Caldea in the afternoon, or save it for a day when the weather is not on your side. Bathing in an outdoor lagoon in the cold mountain air is one of the best parts of the visit.
\n
What else to see in Escaldes
\n
Make time to visit the Perfume Museum, the Escaldes-Engordany Art Centre or the church of Sant Miquel d’Engolasters. And if you want to keep relaxing when you get back, the hotel spa is a good way to round off the day. For dinner, Grau Roig has La Marmita, La Fromagerie and the hotel’s other restaurants.
\n","categories":[{"id":"0e8c2633-22cd-52a4-8bfe-e028a5ba997f","name":"Culture","slug":"culture","parentElement":null},{"id":"425a3962-c27d-569c-ae7b-a85f0e6bb381","name":"Adventure","slug":"adventure","parentElement":null}],"acf":{"subtitle":"Where the real thermal water is and how to plan your visit","lead":"Thermal waters of Escaldes-Engordany: the Roc del Metge spring, Caldea, Inúu and how to plan your visit from Grau Roig.","featuredMedia":null,"isFeatured":"no"}}},{"node":{"id":"129f8c06-da4a-531c-a1d3-fb2a7ec648df","path":"/en/freedom-route-andorra-wwii-escape-lines/","title":"The freedom route in Andorra: WWII escape lines","date":"02 November 2026","content":"
What was the freedom route and why does it matter in Andorra?
\n
It is worth being clear from the outset: there is no official Andorran route with this name and no waymarked itinerary for you to follow. What is documented is more interesting. During the Second World War, Andorra was neutral territory and a transit point for several escape lines, the networks that got Allied airmen, refugees and people under persecution out of occupied France and towards Spain.
\n
The escape lines that passed through Andorra
\n
According to the British association dedicated to the history of the escape lines, Andorran routes were used by the Pat O’Leary, Dutch-Paris, François and Marie-Claire lines. Once the low coastal routes through the Pyrenees had been compromised, the networks moved inland to high passes that were harder to watch.
\n
Why the destination changed
\n
The case of Dutch-Paris explains it well. It first crossed into Switzerland, but anyone interned there stayed until the end of the war. So it changed direction: Toulouse, Saint-Girons, Foix and, frequently, Andorra.
\n
Not an Andorran resistance
\n
The idea of an organised “Andorran resistance” also needs qualifying. The sources describe Andorra as neutral, intermediate territory rather than a fighting front. The guides on these routes were mostly Spanish and often smugglers.
\n
Andorra’s key role during the war
\n
A neutral country high in the mountains, between occupied France and Spain, became a place full of watching eyes. The source describes it as monitored by spies and agents from every country at war, each keeping tabs on the others.
\n
The men who organised the crossings
\n
Francesc Viadiu, recruited in Montpellier by a British agent known as “Mr Miller”, organised guides for the evaders. Joaquim Baldrich, a mountain guide and smuggler in his twenties, helped several hundred refugees reach Spain. They knew these passes for a reason: the same trade described in the smugglers’ legacy in Andorra.
\n
The Hotel Mirador
\n
Many clandestine meetings reportedly took place at the Hotel Mirador, where everyone was watching everyone else.
\n
Radio Andorra
\n
The station was powerful, broadcast across Europe and aimed to stay neutral. The Germans tried to buy or manipulate it for propaganda and failed, although they did gain access to Radio Monte Carlo. Refugees are also said to have sent coded messages to relatives in France through song dedications.
\n
Landmarks of the freedom route in Andorra
\n
Rather than a single path, this was a chain of stages. Many of them lie outside the country, and following them helps you grasp the true scale of the journey.
\n
Before arriving: Toulouse and Ussat-les-Bains
\n
Toulouse was a major gathering point. Many fugitives stopped at the Hotel de Paris, run by the Montgelards. The couple were captured and deported, and only she returned. Many routes began at Ussat-les-Bains.
\n
The crossing
\n
Getting from France to Andorra took between three and seven days depending on the weather. Without a moon, nights in the mountains were pitch black. The hidden refuges and specific paths are not identified in the sources consulted, so do not trust anyone who points one out as “the real one” without documentation.
\n
After Andorra: Manresa and Barcelona
\n
From Andorra there were several more days on foot to Manresa and then a train to Barcelona. There, the evaders were helped by the British consul and vice-consul, and the journey continued to Lisbon or Gibraltar. Those arriving with frostbite were treated by Dr Trias and then taken to a British-American hospital in Madrid and the British Embassy.
\n
A place you can visit
\n
The site with the most direct link that you can visit today is the Museu del Tabac, in the former Reig factory in Sant Julià de Lòria, which operated from 1909 to 1957. It has displays on the smuggling of tobacco, cigars and cigarettes, the trade that produced many of these guides. In those years, crews crossed the mountains with loads of up to 30 kilos and France wanted more and more wool, with Andorrans as middlemen. That knowledge of the passes is what made it possible to get so many people out this way. Check opening times before you go.
\n
How to commemorate this history today
\n
You do not need a guided tour to get close to this episode. You can do it on your own, with some reading and a pair of boots.
\n
In summer and autumn
\n
Walking is the best way to understand what crossing these mountains meant. The Madriu valley or the Pessons lakes, whose route starts at El Cubil in Grau Roig, give you the measure of the terrain, and there are more ideas among the hiking routes in Andorra. None of them is a documented escape route, but they are the same kind of high mountain country. If old paths interest you, have a look at the Camí Ral route as well.
\n
In winter
\n
Cold and snow were part of the risk. Today, in season, you can head out on snowshoes from Grau Roig with a level of safety they never had, and understand why frostbite was such a serious problem. It is also the hotel’s high season, with access to the Grandvalira slopes.
\n
Where to stay
\n
Hotel Grau Roig, listed in the MICHELIN Guide, makes a good base for getting around the mountains. Back at the hotel you have the spa with its heated pool and several dining options: La Vaquería, El Teatro del Vino, La Marmita, La Fromagerie and Secret Room.
\n","categories":[{"id":"0e8c2633-22cd-52a4-8bfe-e028a5ba997f","name":"Culture","slug":"culture","parentElement":null},{"id":"425a3962-c27d-569c-ae7b-a85f0e6bb381","name":"Adventure","slug":"adventure","parentElement":null}],"acf":{"subtitle":"Andorra, neutral territory between occupied France and Spain","lead":"Freedom route in Andorra: the real Second World War escape lines, their guides, Radio Andorra and how to get close to that history today.","featuredMedia":null,"isFeatured":"no"}}},{"node":{"id":"88f72c87-5621-503c-990b-1cd71e1806f3","path":"/en/pharmacies-in-andorra/","title":"Shopping at pharmacies in Andorra","date":"02 November 2026","content":"
Shopping in Andorra’s pharmacies catches the attention of many visitors. There are more pharmacies per resident than in Spain or France, and many products tend to cost less. There are also a few misconceptions, so here is what is worth knowing before you step inside.
\n
Buying from pharmacies in Andorra
\n
Andorra has 57 pharmacies for 89,058 residents, about 70 per 100,000 people, compared with 47 in Spain and 31 in France. Most are concentrated in Andorra la Vella and Escaldes-Engordany, so you will have no trouble finding one.
\n
\n
French and Spanish medicines: the Andorran health system’s catalogue covers around 30,000 medicines, mainly French and Spanish. That makes it easy to find familiar products from both countries.
\n
Prices: Andorra’s general indirect tax is 4.5%, and that usually shows in health and beauty items and many over-the-counter products. The difference depends on the product and the pharmacy, so compare before you buy.
\n
Opening hours: usual hours are 9 am to 1 pm and 3 pm to 7.30 pm, Monday to Saturday, although some pharmacies in tourist areas close later. Check the hours of the one you plan to visit. The on-duty rota is posted on the door of each pharmacy and on the website of the Col·legi de Farmacèutics.
\n
\n
Do you need a prescription in Andorra?
\n
Yes. This is one of the most common misconceptions. Prescriptions do exist in Andorra, and the country is rolling out electronic prescriptions. Medicines such as opioids, benzodiazepines and insulin still require one. If you are unsure about a product, ask the pharmacist, who decides whether it can be dispensed to you. And do not change or start a treatment just because a medicine is cheaper: that decision is for your doctor to make.
\n
Going home with medicines
\n
If you are returning to Spain, remember that medicines in quantities beyond personal use must be declared at customs. The Spanish Tax Agency recommends carrying a copy of your prescription or a medical report and checking any permits you need in advance. Your purchases as a whole must also stay within the general allowance of €900 per person (€450 for under-15s).
\n
Buying online from Andorran pharmacies
\n
Some Andorran pharmacies sell online, mainly health and beauty items and non-prescription products. Always check the conditions, delivery times and shipping costs on the pharmacy’s own website, as they vary. A bill presented in 2026 proposes limiting online sales to non-prescription medicines and penalising unauthorised sales, so these rules may change.
\n
If someone offers you a prescription medicine online without asking for a prescription, be wary. The safest option is to go in person and speak to the pharmacist.
\n
What to buy at a pharmacy if you are coming to ski
\n
Winter, from November to April, is Andorra’s high season, and a day on the Grandvalira ski slopes calls for some forethought. Snow reflects the sun and the cold dries out your skin, so sunscreen, lip balm and moisturiser are all useful buys. If you are injured on the slopes, see a doctor rather than trying to treat it yourself.
\n
Make the most of your trip
\n
Pharmacies fit nicely into an afternoon of shopping. What many people do not realise is that it also has a Perfume Museum, right in the centre of Escaldes-Engordany, and that it makes an excellent choice for a day away from the slopes.
\n
Perfume Museum – Júlia Bonet Foundation
\n
If after several days on the slopes you would like something quieter, head down to Escaldes-Engordany, one of the areas of Andorra with the most culture, restaurants and shops. The museum is at Avenida Carlemany, 115, the country’s main shopping street, so it fits nicely with an afternoon of shopping in Andorra.
\n
It opened in 2004, set up by the Júlia Bonet Foundation, according to Culture Trip. Júlia Bonet, born in Escaldes-Engordany, was the owner and president of Júlia perfumeries, a chain with shops in Andorra and Spain. That explains much of the museum’s purpose: to show how a product seen here mainly in shop windows has more than a century of history, technique and design behind it.
\n
What you will see
\n
The visit follows the evolution of perfume through the twentieth century and its relationship with the society of each period. You will find fragrances, bottles and perfume-related objects from private collections, auctions, markets and donations. The display is arranged by period:
\n
\n
Early twentieth century: the Art Nouveau bottles of Paris at the time, created by glass artists.
\n
The Roaring Twenties: interwar Europe, Art Deco and the garçonne look.
\n
The rest of the century: how the great perfumes set trends and changed with the tastes of each generation.
\n
\n
Figures for the size of the collection vary widely from source to source, so there is little point in fixating on a number. The interesting part is seeing the bottles together and understanding how the idea of luxury shifts from one decade to the next.
\n
The Olfactory Station
\n
The highlight of the visit, according to In Your Pocket, is the Olfactory Station, where machines let you experiment with scents and try composing your own fragrance. It is the part people enjoy most if they come with children or with someone who has little interest in the history of perfume, because here it is all about smelling, comparing and playing. If you do not usually notice the notes in a perfume, you will leave with a keener nose. And if you then want to put that to use in a shop, see our guide to buying perfume in Andorra.
\n
How to visit the Perfume Museum
\n
The visit is straightforward and needs no special planning. Take your time over the scents: that is where the visit really pays off.
\n
We have not been able to confirm current prices, discounts or audio guides in recent sources. It is best to check them directly with the museum at museudelperfum.ad or on (00376) 801 926.
\n
As for opening times, In Your Pocket gives Tuesday to Friday from 10 am to 1 pm and 4 pm to 8 pm, and Saturdays from 10 am to 2 pm and 4 pm to 8 pm, closed on Mondays and Sundays. As guides do not always agree, call before you go, especially on public holidays and in high season.
\n
From Grau Roig you drive down the main road, which in winter may have snow or heavy traffic on changeover days. If you are staying at Hotel Grau Roig, featured in the MICHELIN Guide, carry chains or winter tyres, check road conditions and leave plenty of time.
\n
A plan for a winter’s day
\n
The museum works especially well when conditions on the slopes are poor: if there is wind or fog, or your legs simply ache, an afternoon in Escaldes-Engordany still makes for a good day. You can combine the visit with some time at Caldea, in the same parish, and head back for dinner at the hotel’s restaurants.
\n
What else can you visit in the same area?
\n
Around Avenida Carlemany there is much more than shops and restaurants. You can combine the Perfume Museum with a stop at the Escaldes-Engordany Art Centre or the church of Sant Pere Màrtir. If you had the Carmen Thyssen Museum in mind, note that its Escaldes venue closed on 4 January 2026 in order to move, so check where it is before you go.
\n","categories":[{"id":"0e8c2633-22cd-52a4-8bfe-e028a5ba997f","name":"Culture","slug":"culture","parentElement":null}],"acf":{"subtitle":"A century of bottles and scents on Avenida Carlemany","lead":"Perfume Museum in Escaldes-Engordany: the Júlia Bonet Foundation's history of scent, the Olfactory Station, opening times and what to see nearby.","featuredMedia":{"altText":"","sourceUrl":"https://admin.hotelgrauroig.com/content/uploads/2020/02/museo-perfume-andorra.jpg","localFile":{"childImageSharp":{"croppedSizes":{"aspectRatio":1.3274336283185841,"src":"/static/5c283bb961dc99d5d2e99541c953bdd7/a3e80/museo-perfume-andorra.jpg","srcSet":"/static/5c283bb961dc99d5d2e99541c953bdd7/f2477/museo-perfume-andorra.jpg 150w,\n/static/5c283bb961dc99d5d2e99541c953bdd7/eb94d/museo-perfume-andorra.jpg 300w,\n/static/5c283bb961dc99d5d2e99541c953bdd7/a3e80/museo-perfume-andorra.jpg 600w,\n/static/5c283bb961dc99d5d2e99541c953bdd7/2f1e0/museo-perfume-andorra.jpg 900w","sizes":"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px"},"croppedSizesDuotone":{"aspectRatio":1.3274336283185841,"src":"/static/5c283bb961dc99d5d2e99541c953bdd7/5c485/museo-perfume-andorra.jpg","srcSet":"/static/5c283bb961dc99d5d2e99541c953bdd7/464df/museo-perfume-andorra.jpg 150w,\n/static/5c283bb961dc99d5d2e99541c953bdd7/4f3d6/museo-perfume-andorra.jpg 300w,\n/static/5c283bb961dc99d5d2e99541c953bdd7/5c485/museo-perfume-andorra.jpg 600w,\n/static/5c283bb961dc99d5d2e99541c953bdd7/a6ba0/museo-perfume-andorra.jpg 900w","sizes":"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px"}}}},"isFeatured":"no"}}},{"node":{"id":"9f65b619-ad23-52bc-8e03-7d258545de5b","path":"/en/nightlife-in-andorra/","title":"Nightlife in Andorra: Where to Go Out, Area by Area","date":"02 November 2026","content":"
After a day on the slopes, you may still feel like a drink, some music or a proper dance. These are the places to go out in Andorra, arranged by area. Nightlife venues open and close often, and many only operate during the snow season, so check opening times before you go.
\n
Where to go out at night in Andorra
\n
Winter is the high season, from November to April: that is when the ski villages are at their liveliest and après-ski gets going while everyone still has their boots on. Where you stay makes quite a difference to your evening.
\n
Andorra la Vella
\n
The liveliest spots tend to cluster around Plaça Guillemó and the streets of L’Alzinaret, Cap del Carrer and La Llacuna. The mood here is calmer than in the resorts, ideal for having a drink and talking over the day’s skiing.
\n
The Ordino Arcalís guide lists Bar Bacco, Atelier, La Birreria and Chesterfield Lounge among the capital’s best known, and, for dancing, Kapital Disco and Klub Andorra. In Your Pocket adds La Fada Ignorant, with live music, concerts and elaborate cocktails, and Temple Bar, a busy bar with Latin music and karaoke nights.
\n
Grau Roig
\n
If you are staying at Hotel Grau Roig, featured in the MICHELIN Guide, evenings here are quiet. It is not a club area, and that is part of its appeal. You have the hotel’s Copper Bar for a last drink and, just steps away, its restaurants for dinner without taking the car. Also in Grau Roig, Neilson describes the Hotel Iglú, with reservation-only dinners inside an igloo and a terrace with a fire for stargazing. Check that it is open, as it depends on the season and the snow.
\n
Soldeu and El Tarter
\n
Soldeu is the main après-ski area on this side of Grandvalira. Aspen Bar has reasonably priced beer, pub food, rock music, pool tables and sport on TV. Snowcarbon also recommends Fat Albert’s, popular and often with live music, along with The Villager, Avalanche and Piccadilly.
\n
El Tarter is quieter at night. The place to know here is L’Abarset, at the foot of the gondola: it gets going from four in the afternoon with tapas and live music, and Soldeu is close by if you want to carry on.
\n
Pas de la Casa
\n
This is the liveliest and most boisterous place to go out in the whole country, and also the closest to Grau Roig. Ordino Arcalís names Kamikaze Surf Bar, Milwaukee, Bilbord, Underground and La Nit Disco among the most popular, and Snowcarbon adds Paddy’s, Condor, Mambo, Havana and Mexicano. Neilson also mentions Cala Bassa, an Ibiza-style snow lounge with DJs. If you want to dance until late, this is your area.
\n
Arinsal
\n
One of the most charming areas for something different. Beer House Alpha, the Cervesa Alpha craft brewery, is at Mas de Ribafeta, Borda Callisa, at about 1,500 metres. It offers tastings, pairings and guided tours, opens from 7 pm to 1 am and takes visitors by reservation only. If you would rather have dinner with some atmosphere, Neilson recommends Cisco’s, with Tex-Mex food at the foot of the gondola.
\n
Tips for a night out in Andorra
\n
\n
Leave the car behind. Mountain roads in winter, at night and in icy conditions are unforgiving. If you have been drinking, leave the car and take a taxi or stay nearby. If you are heading to Pas de la Casa from Grau Roig, sort out the return journey before you go.
\n
Bear the season in mind. Many resort venues close as soon as the snow ends. Outside winter, Andorra la Vella is your best bet.
\n
Wrap up warm. Queues and terraces at night above 2,000 metres are serious business.
\n
Combine it with other plans. Have a look at what to do in Andorra, our ski slopes or a mountain dinner at Grau Roig, which is another way to enjoy a night out.
\n
\n
If you are heading towards Arinsal, take the chance to discover the rest of the area with our guide to <a
