You climb onto a sled pulled by Nordic dogs and cross the snow in a way that feels nothing like skiing, with no lifts and no engine noise. Here is what it involves, which routes are available and what you should bring along.
\n
What is mushing?
\n
Mushing means travelling across the snow on a sled pulled by dogs. There are two ways of doing it: as a passenger, with a professional musher handling the team, or driving the sled yourself while a guide gives you directions. In Grau Roig you can do both, so you also get the chance to be a musher for a day.
\n
The dog team
\n
The dogs are the heart of mushing. Grau Roig uses Nordic breeds such as the husky, the Samoyed and the Alaskan Malamute, all well suited to the cold and to running on snow. When the ride ends, operators usually leave a little time for you to get close to them and stroke them.
\n
The sled and the driver
\n
Passenger sleds are larger, take several people, depending on the operator, and are driven by a professional musher, so no effort is needed on your part. Driving sleds are individual, lighter and fitted with a brake. You stand behind the basket and steer a team of 4 to 6 dogs, depending on your weight, while the guide gives you instructions for the whole route.
\n
Why choose mushing in Andorra?
\n
Because it is the calmest way to see the snowy mountains, and it fits very well into a ski week. It is a winter activity available during the snow season, so you can save it for an afternoon off the slopes, or for that day when your legs need a rest but you still want to be up in the mountains.
\n
Routes in Grau Roig
\n
The operator RocRoi advertises rides of 2, 3 and 5 km in Grau Roig, a 2 km option where you do the driving, a 5 km night outing and a 10 km ride with dinner. The longer routes head into the Moretó forest. If you would like a longer night in the mountains, have a look at our guide to dinners in high-mountain huts as well.
\n
Who it is for
\n
As a passenger you need neither experience nor any particular level of fitness, which is why it works for families, couples and groups of friends. Age limits change with the area and the type of ride: the night rides in Grau Roig advertise a minimum age of 3 with an adult. The minimum age for driving and the places per sled depend on the operator. Check when you book, as these conditions can vary from one season to the next.
\n
Getting close to nature
\n
What stays with you is the contrast: the silent forest, the sound of paws on snow and the cold on your face. If you like this unhurried kind of outing, pair it with a snowshoe walk. And if you would rather have more speed, there is also the snowmobile.
\n
FAQs
\n
Is mushing in Andorra safe?
\n
You always go out with guides, who explain the activity before you set off and stay with you along the route. Follow their directions, especially if you are driving, and ask which insurance the activity includes: on the night rides advertised by RocRoi, third-party liability cover is included but accident cover is not.
\n
Do I need previous experience for mushing in Andorra?
\n
No. As a passenger, all you have to do is sit back and enjoy it. If you would like to drive, you get your instructions before setting off and the guide stays with you all the way.
\n
What should I bring for mushing in Andorra?
\n
Mountain boots, a good warm jacket, gloves and sunglasses. Add a hat and sun cream, as the snow reflects a lot of light. Dress in layers: as a passenger you will hardly move, so you will feel the cold more.
\n
How do I book from the hotel?
\n
Tell us you would like a mushing outing during your stay and we will help you find the best combination of times: +376 75 55 56 or info@hotelgrauroig.com. The hotel sits at the foot of the slopes, in the Grau Roig sector itself, and features in the MICHELIN Guide. It is devoted mainly to the work of Ukrainian miniaturist Nicolai Siadristy, and the pieces are so small they can only be seen through a lens. It makes for a short, intriguing indoor visit, perfect for a day of poor weather. It is also one of those visits that appeal even to people who rarely set foot in museums. If you are coming from Hotel Grau Roig, which features in the MICHELIN Guide, the journey takes you across half of Andorra, so it is worth combining the visit with something else in the Ordino valley.
\n
Who is Nicolai Siadristy?
\n
Visit Andorra presents him as one of the world’s great miniaturists. He makes every piece by hand, and a single work can take him up to eight years. He does not work only with precious metals: he also uses paper, fruit seeds and grains of rice as a base.
\n
What the collection includes
\n
The museum brings together Siadristy’s permanent exhibition with two other collections: Liu Shouben’s small Chinese bottles and a set of Russian matryoshka dolls and papier-mâché boxes. What unites them all is the scale and the meticulous handwork.
\n
What to see at the Miniature Museum in Ordino: masterpieces in miniature
\n
The visit is organised around the microscopes. Take your time: the pleasure lies in looking, glancing away and looking again to take in the real size of what is in front of you.
\n
Siadristy’s micro-miniatures
\n
These are the core of the museum. The pieces cited by the tourist board include a Tavern on a Grain of Salt and a camel train, worked in materials such as gold and platinum or on seeds and grains of rice. You will also see crucifixes and religious art at the same scale.
\n
Liu Shouben’s snuff bottles
\n
These are small Chinese bottles about 5 cm tall, hand-painted with Andorran and western motifs. This part of the visit is a surprise, because you will recognise landscapes and monuments of the country on an object that fits in the palm of your hand.
\n
Matryoshka dolls and papier-mâché boxes
\n
The museum also holds Russian matryoshka dolls of various sizes, the smallest of them true miniatures, along with papier-mâché boxes. This is the part that works best with children, because the larger pieces can be seen without a microscope.
\n
The space
\n
The ticket office and gift shop are on the ground floor, and there is an audiovisual area about the artist’s life and work. The museum is adapted for people with reduced mobility.
\n
Other museums in the area
\n
In Ordino you also have the Casa d’Areny-Plandolit, home of the only Andorran family with a noble title, enriched by livestock, iron and forges. Don Guillem d’Areny-Plandolit championed the New Reform of 1866, and the museum tells his story with holograms and gardens. Both visits fit comfortably into one morning. And if you have a little more time, Ordino’s Iron Route is an outdoor walk that recalls the valley’s mining past.
\n
Opening hours and admission to the Miniature Museum in Ordino: practical information
\n
These details are the ones published on the official museus.ad website. Confirm them before you go, especially on public holidays or if you are visiting as a group.
\n
Opening hours
\n
\n
Monday to Saturday: 9.30 am to 7 pm.
\n
Sundays and public holidays: 9.30 am to 1.30 pm.
\n
\n
Admission and prices
\n
\n
General admission: 10 euros.
\n
Reduced admission: 4.50 euros, for groups and children aged 6 to 10.
\n
PassMuseu: the museum accepts this card and offers a discount to holders.
\n
\n
Guided tours
\n
The guided tour lasts about 20 minutes and is offered in English, Spanish, French and Catalan, for groups of up to 25 people. For more information, the museum’s phone number is (+376) 838 338.
\n
How much time to allow
\n
The guided tour is short, but allow a little more if you want to watch the audiovisual and linger at the microscopes. It is a visit you can easily fit into a morning, leaving time for a stroll around the village.
\n
How to get to the Miniature Museum in Ordino: access guide
\n
The museum is in the Edifici Maragda, on Carrer Mossèn Cinto Verdaguer, on the main road into Ordino, next to the CG-3.
\n
Route from Hotel Grau Roig
\n
Follow the CG-2 down towards Encamp and Escaldes-Engordany and from there take the CG-3 up towards La Massana and Ordino. It is a simple route, but in winter it is worth checking the road conditions before leaving, especially if it has snowed. If you want to make the most of the journey, Encamp has the Casa Cristo Ethnographic Museum.
\n
By bus
\n
From Andorra la Vella, line L6 goes to Ordino. It is a handy option if you would rather not drive or if you are in the capital for another reason, such as shopping.
\n
How it fits into your stay
\n
In winter, the high season at Grau Roig, it is an ideal outing for a blustery day or for resting your legs between days on the Grandvalira slopes. If you stay at Hotel Grau Roig, in Grandvalira, several of these routes are within a reasonable drive. The hotel appears in the MICHELIN Guide, with one Key. These are real routes, with their published details.
\n
1. Vall d’Incles, the closest
\n
The Incles valley, a U-shaped glacial valley between El Tarter and Canillo, is about 10 minutes by car from the hotel. It has mountain pine and fir forests, well-marked paths and a low level of difficulty. One of its routes, 2.6 kilometres long, can be done in a morning. From mid-June to early September an electric buggy runs to the head of the valley.
\n
2. Camí de les Pardines, from Engolasters
\n
It sets off from the church of Sant Miquel d’Engolasters and passes the lake, at 1,622 metres. It is 13.8 kilometres there and back, with 250 metres of cumulative ascent and 3 hours 40 minutes without stops; if you leave a car at the end, it drops to about 6.9. Scots pine predominates, with mountain pine and rhododendron towards the end, along with box, birch and willow. It includes a botanical trail with information panels.
\n
3. Vall del Madriu, the great cultural landscape
\n
The Madriu-Perafita-Claror valley is listed by UNESCO as a cultural landscape. The Huts Itinerary starts at the information point by the car park, just before Engolasters. It takes 6 hours 30 minutes without stops, with 586 metres of ascent and medium difficulty. You will find Scots pine on the sunny side, fir on the shady slopes and mountain pine between 1,700 and 2,000 metres, alongside dry-stone huts, charcoal pits, a forge and the remains of sawmills.
\n
4. Circuit de les Fonts, for taking it easy
\n
From La Comella, in Andorra la Vella, it is 3.26 kilometres, 1 hour 10 minutes and easy. It is a damp area with aspens, whitebeams and silver firs, and home to asarina, a Pyrenean endemic.
\n
5. Vall de Sorteny Nature Park
\n
In Ordino, along the CG-3 and then the CS-370 past El Serrat, this park of about 1,080 hectares brings together more than 700 plant species, over 50 of them endemic to the Pyrenees. UNESCO declared it a Biosphere Reserve in 2020, and it has themed guided routes, including one on ancient forests.
\n
6. Santa Coloma to La Margineda
\n
A short walk in Andorra la Vella: 60 minutes, 50 metres of ascent and low difficulty, among chestnuts, oaks and holm oaks. It is a good example of low-valley woodland.
\n
Essential tips for enjoying forest walks in Andorra
\n
The forest does not ask for much, but the mountains change quickly. These tips work for almost all the routes.
\n
Choose according to your time
\n
For a short outing, Incles or the Circuit de les Fonts. For a full day, the Madriu. If you are unsure, read our guide to hiking routes in Andorra. The forecast is on meteo.ad, and it is worth checking before you leave.
\n
With a guide, if you prefer
\n
The hotel has mountain guides who adapt and create routes for all levels and types of visitor. It is a good option if this is your first time in the Pyrenees. Its website also mentions a gourmet picnic at 2,400 metres, so ask about the terms when booking.
\n
Basic safety
\n
Tell someone your route, carry a charged phone and remember that the emergency number is 112. In the Madriu, watch out for vipers: look where you put your hands when leaning on stones.
\n
Respect the forest
\n
Stay on the marked path, take your rubbish with you and do not pick flowers. The poet’s narcissus, Andorra’s national flower, grows in places such as Incles. If you bring a dog, keep it under control so that it does not disturb the wildlife.
\n
A good ending
\n
Back at the hotel, the spa has a heated pool, whirlpool bath, sauna and Turkish bath, from 10 am to 9 pm, free of charge for guests. The treatment menu includes chiro-massage and foot massage, which are ideal after a walk.
\n
Benefits of forest walks: reconnect with nature in Andorra
\n
Walking among trees is one of the simplest ways to slow down. You do not need to go far or climb a peak to feel it.
\n
Switching off without effort
\n
An hour’s walk on the Circuit de les Fonts requires no special preparation. The mountain air, the sound of water and the change of pace do much of the work.
\n
Exercise that suits you
\n
With routes lasting from an hour to more than 6 hours, you can choose how much effort to put in each day. Walking uphill is also good exercise without the impact of running.
\n
All year round
\n
In spring the forest fills with green; in autumn with contrasting colours, as we explain in Andorra in autumn. In summer the shade is welcome. And in winter the snow transforms everything.
\n
Eating well on your return
\n
After a walk, La Fromagerie’s fondues and raclettes go down well, as do La Marmita’s market cooking and La Vaquería’s traditional mountain food. You will find everything on our restaurants page.
\n
Preparation and equipment for forest walks in Andorra
\n
You do not need technical gear for these walks, unless you are heading out on long routes or in winter. These are the basics.
\n
1. Clothing and footwear
\n
Breathable, quick-drying clothes and a good pair of mountain boots or shoes. Add a warm layer and a waterproof: at altitude, the weather changes fast.
\n
2. Navigation
\n
Carry a map or a route downloaded to your phone, especially in the Madriu. Tourist offices can point you in the right direction.
\n
3. Rucksack
\n
\n
Water and food: especially on long routes.
\n
Sun protection: sun cream, sunglasses and a cap.
\n
Basic first-aid kit: always worth having.
\n
\n
4. Useful accessories
\n
\n
Poles: they help on uneven ground.
\n
Binoculars: to watch wildlife without disturbing it.
\n
Camera: for the views and the flowers.
\n
\n
5. In winter
\n
From November to April, snow changes the rules. Snowshoes are the natural way to keep walking: the hotel suggests them for discovering frozen lakes. The route to the Pessons lakes, which starts from Grau Roig, can be done on snowshoes and is more demanding; check the avalanche risk and go in a group. In Incles, roads close during heavy snowfall, although many areas remain accessible on foot.
\n
Discover the flora and fauna on your forest walks in Andorra
\n
Part of the interest of these walks lies in what you see and hear along the way. Keep your eyes open.
\n
Trees by altitude
\n
On the valley floors, holm oaks, oaks, chestnuts and hazels dominate. Higher up comes Scots pine, especially on sunny slopes, and fir on the shady ones, often with rhododendron in the understorey. Between 1,700 and 2,000 metres, mountain pine takes over. On the fir branches in the Madriu you will see the lichens known as old man’s beard.
\n
Flowers
\n
Poet’s narcissus, lilies, gentians, broom and rhododendron grow in Incles. In Sorteny, the diversity is far greater, with more than 700 species.
\n
Wildlife
\n
In Incles you may see vultures, bearded vultures and golden eagles, as well as marmots, newts and common frogs near the water, plus squirrels and roe deer. Sorteny is home to chamois, roe deer, marmots, martens and wild boar. In the Madriu, there are foxes, chamois and boar, whose tracks you may find.
\n
How to observe wildlife
\n
Set out early, walk quietly and use binoculars. For more context, Sorteny runs guided excursions all year round, on birds, butterflies and wetlands, among other topics. Its mountain hut, the Borda de Sorteny, opens in winter and summer and serves meals.
\n","categories":[{"id":"0e8c2633-22cd-52a4-8bfe-e028a5ba997f","name":"Culture","slug":"culture","parentElement":null},{"id":"425a3962-c27d-569c-ae7b-a85f0e6bb381","name":"Adventure","slug":"adventure","parentElement":null}],"acf":{"subtitle":"Incles, Madriu, Pardines, Les Fonts and Sorteny, with details and tips","lead":"Forest walks in Andorra: real routes in Incles, Madriu, Pardines and Sorteny, with distances, flora, fauna and walking tips.","featuredMedia":null,"isFeatured":"no"}}},{"node":{"id":"c0de867b-2b18-5e91-8892-ab0861b4fa02","path":"/en/rock-art-andorra/","title":"Rock paintings in Andorra: engravings and ancient art in the Pyrenees","date":"02 November 2026","content":"
History and discovery of rock paintings in Andorra
\n
If you are looking for rock paintings in Andorra, it helps to start with what is actually there: what is documented in the country are rock engravings, not paintings. They are incisions in the stone, most of them medieval and some older, even Neolithic. To see genuine prehistoric painting you need to cross to the French side, to the Niaux cave. Both can be visited from Hotel Grau Roig, in Grandvalira, which appears in the MICHELIN Guide with one Key.
\n
Most Andorran engravings are found in the country’s two main valleys. The magazine World Archaeology covered them in 2012 and highlighted three groups: Roc de les Bruixes, Sornàs and Sant Cerni de Nagol.
\n
The oldest traces in the country
\n
Human presence in Andorra goes back long before these engravings. The La Margineda rock shelter, excavated between 1979 and 1991, was occupied from the Mesolithic and Neolithic through to historical times. No engravings are recorded in that shelter, but it gives a sense of how long people have lived in these valleys.
\n
What we still do not know
\n
That source gives no precise dates for each group, and some interpretations remain open. So go without expecting a museum: they are marks in the rock, sometimes discreet, and part of their interest lies in everything we do not know about them.
\n
Cultural and archaeological importance of rock paintings in the Pyrenees
\n
The Pyrenees hold some of Europe’s finest examples of Palaeolithic art, above all on the French side. In Andorra the interest is different: the engravings show how the land has been marked over the centuries, from prehistory to the Middle Ages.
\n
Niaux: cave art across the border
\n
The Niaux cave, in Ariège, is one of Europe’s best-known Palaeolithic sites and one of the few decorated caves still open to the public. Its paintings are roughly 17,000 to 11,000 years old and belong to the Magdalenian period. They are concentrated in the Salon Noir, a large chamber about 700 metres from the entrance, with bison, horses, ibex and deer.
\n
A distinctive medieval mark
\n
The engravings at Roc de les Bruixes are interesting for another reason: they portray 13th-century warriors with very specific weaponry. They may reflect the conflicts of the time in these valleys, before the pariatges signed between 1278 and 1288, the agreements at the root of present-day Andorra.
\n
A cultural landscape
\n
The Madriu-Perafita-Claror valley, a World Heritage site, helps complete the picture. It is not an engraving site but a cultural landscape with settlements and farming terraces that explain how people have lived here.
\n
Other cultural visits
\n
To understand the country’s history better, you can move on to its Romanesque sacred art, its castles and defensive architecture or the Casa Cristo Ethnographic Museum in Encamp.
\n
Main places to see rock art in Andorra
\n
These are the sites backed by documentation. Apart from La Margineda, they are not museum spaces, so ask at a tourist office before going: (+376) 750 100 or info@oficinaturisme.ad.
\n
Roc de les Bruixes, in Prats (Canillo)
\n
This is the most interesting group. It lies on the vertical wall separating two terraces, over about 2 square metres. You can see two horses with riders, four complete warriors on foot, three incomplete ones and other figures, along with inscribed crosses, pentagrams and traces of writing. The adjoining terraces have schematic prehistoric engravings. It is reached by the road from Canillo to Prats, and it is a good idea to ask in the village, as it is easy to get lost.
\n
Sornàs (Ordino)
\n
Near Ordino, Sornàs shows a series of anthropomorphic crosses, that is, crosses with human features.
\n
Sant Cerni de Nagol (Sant Julià de Lòria)
\n
In the south of the country, near Sant Julià, this group is known for its cryptographic graffiti, among the most curious engravings in Andorra.
\n
La Margineda archaeological site
\n
In Santa Coloma, Andorra la Vella, this is the country’s largest archaeological site. It has no rock art, but it is the most complete archaeological visit: about 4,000 square metres, open since 2012, with five periods of occupation from the Bronze Age to the late 19th century. A settlement from the 12th to 14th centuries stands out. Guided summer visits require advance booking. Admission: 5 euros from 12 to 65, 3 euros for over-65s and Carnet Jove holders, and free for under-12s.
\n
From the hotel
\n
The reward for a day of sightseeing is the return to Grau Roig: the spa is open until 9 pm, with a heated pool, whirlpool bath, sauna and Turkish bath, and you can dine in any of its restaurants: La Vaquería, La Marmita, La Fromagerie, El Teatro del Vino or Secret Room.
\n
Techniques and styles of rock art in the Pyrenees
\n
Painting and engraving look quite different on the ground. Knowing what to look for changes the visit a great deal.
\n
Schematic engraving
\n
The medieval engravings at Roc de les Bruixes are drawn in a schematic style. The warrior figures are built from two opposing triangles, the lower one with strokes suggesting a skirt. The dating to the second half of the 13th century relies on the weaponry, such as the cylindrical helmet and the sword with cross and pommel, and on their similarity to the engravings at Castellfollit de Riubregós (Anoia).
\n
A scene open to interpretation
\n
It is not known whether it shows an idealised scene or a real event. One theory links it to the clashes between the Count of Foix, Roger Bernat III, and the Bishop of Urgell, Pere d’Urtx. Another places it closer to Arnau de Castellbò, in the late 12th or early 13th century. Behind one of the riders is a structure that could be a tower, and at the top right, a pentagon that may be a solar symbol.
\n
The paintings at Niaux
\n
At Niaux the style is Magdalenian: black outlines, some red in certain signs and the stone background left uncoloured. Bison dominate; the bison panel is dated to about 13,000 years ago. The horses have painted coats and resemble Przewalski’s horse.
\n
Two ways of seeing
\n
In painting, colour and volume; in engraving, line and light. That is why engravings are best seen in raking light, first or last thing in the day, and why it is worth taking your time, always without touching them.
\n
Conservation and protection of prehistoric art in Andorra
\n
The engravings are in the open air and fragile. Niaux, for its part, limits visits precisely to protect the cave. Here is how to visit all this with respect.
\n
When visiting engravings
\n
\n
Do not touch or trace the rock: friction and contact damage it.
\n
Do not use chalk or water to highlight the lines.
\n
Respect the terraces and stone walls: they are part of the whole.
\n
\n
Booking Niaux
\n
Online booking is compulsory, as visitor numbers and duration are limited for conservation. The tour is guided, by lamplight, along an uneven path of about 700 metres. It is not recommended for people with reduced mobility, and children under 5 cannot enter. For them, and for anyone wanting to round off the visit, the Prehistory Park at Tarascon-sur-Ariège has a replica of the Salon Noir.
\n
How to fit it into your trip
\n
For the engravings, summer or autumn is best, with no snow. Combine Prats with a walk along the historic trails and leave Niaux for a full day, checking opening times on its website first.
\n
If you come in winter
\n
November to April is ski season, and the obvious plan is to ski in Grandvalira, with its 215 kilometres of slopes, and keep a museum for a bad-weather day. If you cross into France, remember that in Andorra special equipment is compulsory from 1 November to 15 May, and check mobilitat.ad before setting off.
\n","categories":[{"id":"0e8c2633-22cd-52a4-8bfe-e028a5ba997f","name":"Culture","slug":"culture","parentElement":null},{"id":"425a3962-c27d-569c-ae7b-a85f0e6bb381","name":"Adventure","slug":"adventure","parentElement":null}],"acf":{"subtitle":"What is really in Andorra and where to see prehistoric painting nearby","lead":"Rock paintings in Andorra: the real engravings at Roc de les Bruixes, Sornàs and Nagol, and how to see Palaeolithic art at Niaux.","featuredMedia":null,"isFeatured":"no"}}},{"node":{"id":"aae62c76-43a7-5399-af8d-ddd9b88b605e","path":"/en/ski-touring-andorra/","title":"Randonnée in Andorra: ski touring guide and best routes","date":"02 November 2026","content":"
What is randonnée?
\n
Randonnée, or ski touring, means climbing the mountain on skis that let you walk uphill and then descending through untracked snow. It is worth distinguishing it from ski mountaineering proper: according to Ordino Arcalís, on a tour you keep your skis on the whole time, while ski mountaineering takes place on harder terrain, with sections on foot that call for rope technique and knowledge of snow safety.
\n
The sport is enjoying a high point: skimo made its debut at the 2026 Winter Olympics, and Andorra has been hosting top-level events for years.
\n
Equipment for randonnée
\n
To go ski touring in Andorra you need specific gear:
\n
\n
Touring skis: designed for going up and down on snowy terrain.
\n
Touring bindings: they free your heel for walking and lock it for the descent.
\n
Touring boots: comfortable for walking, with enough control for skiing.
\n
Climbing skins: they stick to the base of the ski to give you grip on the way up.
\n
Transceiver, shovel and probe: your avalanche safety kit, which you must know how to use before setting off.
\n
\n
The best randonnée routes in Andorra
\n
Andorra has routes for different levels. It starts from the El Cubil car park and runs through a very rocky high mountain setting, between the Negre d’Envalira and La Menera. At the Portella de Joan Antoni, views open up over the La Llosa valley and, in the distance, the Serra del Cadí.
\n
Pic de Montmalús (2,781 m): 5 km with 671 m of ascent, moderate difficulty, with about 2 h 15 min going up and 1 h coming down. It starts from the Grau Roig car park and the descent follows the face overlooking the Pessons lakes.
\n
Ordino Arcalís routes: La Coma, Les Portelles, Pic de Peyreguills, L’Hortell and La Font are marked, maintained routes of varying levels, accessed with the resort’s Mountain Pass. They are a good option if you would like to start on more controlled terrain.
\n
Coma Pedrosa: Andorra’s highest mountain, with superb views. This is an objective for experienced skiers.
\n
\n
If you are after something more ambitious, the ski mountaineering guidebook by Patric Perisse, a high mountain guide, covers more than 100 routes in 9 areas and describes the Tour of Andorra on skis in 6 stages.
\n
Skimo competitions in Andorra
\n
The Grau Roig sector is a regular competition venue. The Dynafit Andorra Skimo was held on 21 and 22 February 2026, in pairs, starting in Grau Roig for the Skimo 6, 8 and 10 formats. The Skimo 6 enters the Madriu-Perafita-Claror valley and the Skimo 10 takes in the Pessons glacial cirque. Arinsal, for its part, hosted the ISMF Comapedrosa World Cup in January 2024.
\n
FAQs about randonnée in Andorra
\n
Do I need previous alpine skiing experience?
\n
Yes. You need to ski confidently in order to descend off-piste safely, especially on terrain with avalanche risk. If you are coming from piste skiing, start on marked routes.
\n
When is the best time for randonnée in Andorra?
\n
Winter, when there is enough snow, with the ski season as your guide. Bear in mind that the period of highest avalanche risk runs from December to March, so check the weather and warnings before every outing.
\n
Do I need to hire a guide for randonnée in Andorra?
\n
If you are a beginner or do not know the area, it is advisable. A mountain guide will help you choose the route and assess the conditions. Remember that outside regulated areas, Andorran law places safety and rescue outside the resort’s responsibility. Ski mountaineering is among the hotel’s snow activities, so you can ask about options when you book.
\n
Where should I stay for randonnée?
\n
Grau Roig puts the El Cubil and resort car parks close at hand, and with them the first two routes above. Hotel Grau Roig features in the MICHELIN Guide and has a spa and its own restaurants in which to recover after a day on the snow. If you like fishing and spending the day out in nature, you will find trout and scenery here in equal measure, along with clear rules that are worth reading before you set up your rod. Here is what you can catch, where to fish and what you need to stay on the right side of the regulations.
\n
Fish species in Andorra
\n
The star is the brown trout (Salmo trutta fario), native to the country and the species that defines fishing in Andorran rivers. It is quick and wary, and it forces you to approach every pool with care.
\n
The brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) lives in the high mountain lakes, so finding it takes a proper walk. That effort is part of the appeal: you will reach places you never see from the road.
\n
Rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) is fished in Lake Engolasters, one of the waters that opens earliest each season.
\n
Where to fish in Andorra
\n
The country divides its waters into 15 controlled fishing areas, 2 intensive fishing areas, 1 catch-and-keep reserve and 11 catch-and-release reserves, spread across Andorra la Vella, Canillo, Encamp, La Massana and Ordino. Not all waters follow the same rules, so check those for your stretch before you start.
\n
Rivers
\n
The Valira del Nord and the Valira d’Orient are the backbone of river fishing, each with its own stretch: the first runs between the confluence with the Arinsal river and the Gran Valira; the second, between the confluence with the Forn river and the Gran Valira. Where the two meet, the Gran Valira begins, and it has a catch-and-release stretch where every fish goes back into the water alive.
\n
The Principality also has smaller, more mountainous watercourses, such as the Madriu, Incles, Ransol, Os and Arinsal rivers. If you want to get to know these valleys even without a rod, the Madriu valley and the Incles valley are each worth a full day.
\n
High mountain torrents
\n
The torrents that run down from cirques such as Pessons or Tristaina offer cold-water fishing, short currents and precise casting. Before you go, check the regulations to confirm the stretch is open, as some waters are reserves or come with special conditions.
\n
High mountain lakes
\n
Some Andorran lakes sit above 2,000 metres and are reached by footpath, so you will need strong legs and a willingness to walk. The reward is fishing in a high mountain setting that is very hard to match. If you are still choosing where to go, our guides to Andorra’s glacial lakes and the Pessons lakes will help you get your bearings.
\n
Lake Engolasters is the easiest option for rainbow trout. And there is one lake designed with families in mind: Lake Cubil, where under-14s can fish with their family or a specialist guide. It lies next to the Grau Roig sector, so it is ideal if you are staying at Hotel Grau Roig, which features in the MICHELIN Guide.
\n
What you need to know about fishing in Andorra
\n
Fishing is tightly regulated in the Principality and closely monitored by the authorities. These are the details published for the 2026 season. The definitive version is the ministerial order in the BOPA, the official gazette, so check it before you head out.
\n
2026 season
\n
\n
14 March: Lake Engolasters and the catch-and-release stretch of the Gran Valira open.
\n
4 April: the remaining rivers and river stretches open.
\n
6 June: lakes and other still waters open.
\n
Closing: varies by area. Some stretches of the Gran Valira close on 15 November.
\n
\n
Early in the season it is cold and fishing is slower. Catches tend to pick up from late June.
\n
Permits
\n
You need a fishing permit, which is personal and non-transferable. A full-season permit costs €150 for non-residents and €64 for residents under 65. If you are only visiting for a few days, there are one-day and three-day tourist permits, plus options for catch-and-release areas; you apply for them online on the Government of Andorra website.
\n
Physical licences are no longer issued: your proof is the payment receipt, which you must carry with you. Renewal is done through e-Tràmits with an electronic certificate, or in person at the Government’s Procedures Section in Andorra la Vella or at the parish offices.
\n
Sizes and catch limits
\n
\n
Designated stretches of the Valira del Nord and Valira d’Orient: minimum size 30 cm and up to 8 fish a day.
\n
All other areas: minimum size 20 cm and a maximum of 2 fish a day.
\n
Catch and release: all fish are returned alive.
\n
\n
Any fish under the minimum size goes back into the water.
\n
Other rules worth knowing
\n
\n
Fishing is by rod only and in daylight, between sunrise and sunset.
\n
Live or dead fish, fish roe and cheese are banned as bait.
\n
Fish caught in public waters may not be sold.
\n
Frogs require a specific permit, may only be caught by hand and are limited to 24 per angler per day.
\n
\n
Breaking these rules can lead to fines, and fishing in a protected reserve or with nets counts as a serious or very serious offence.
\n
What to bring on a fishing day
\n
Mornings at the high lakes are cold even in summer, so bring warm clothing, a hat and gloves, and hiking boots. If you fly fish, Visit Andorra recommends a single-handed rod of around 10 feet for 3 to 5 weight lines and, in summer, dry flies in natural colours such as green, brown, black or maroon.
\n
Fishing and hiking: the complete day out
\n
Many fishing spots require a walk, so you can turn the day into a full hike and discover corners you would otherwise miss. You will find ideas in our selection of hiking routes in Andorra.
\n
It works very well with children: they learn to find their way among trees, rivers and waterfalls, and the day ends with a picnic on the bank. If you would rather not prepare anything, the hotel lists a picnic among its summer activities; ask about availability when you book.
\n
Andorra outside the fishing season
\n
In the depths of winter the lakes and most of the rivers are closed to fishing, but the mountains remain in full swing. From November to April the main season is skiing: take a look at our ski slopes, or try snowshoeing if you prefer a quieter pace.
\n","categories":[{"id":"425a3962-c27d-569c-ae7b-a85f0e6bb381","name":"Adventure","slug":"adventure","parentElement":null}],"acf":{"subtitle":"Trout, mountain rivers and high-altitude lakes in the Principality","lead":"Fishing in Andorra: species, areas, permits and 2026 rules for catching trout in the rivers and high mountain lakes of the Principality.","featuredMedia":{"altText":"","sourceUrl":"https://admin.hotelgrauroig.com/content/uploads/2019/12/pesca-andorra.jpg","localFile":{"childImageSharp":{"croppedSizes":{"aspectRatio":1.3274336283185841,"src":"/static/1b78b66aca9593d2fd695aba7e78949d/a3e80/pesca-andorra.jpg","srcSet":"/static/1b78b66aca9593d2fd695aba7e78949d/f2477/pesca-andorra.jpg 150w,\n/static/1b78b66aca9593d2fd695aba7e78949d/eb94d/pesca-andorra.jpg 300w,\n/static/1b78b66aca9593d2fd695aba7e78949d/a3e80/pesca-andorra.jpg 600w,\n/static/1b78b66aca9593d2fd695aba7e78949d/2f1e0/pesca-andorra.jpg 900w","sizes":"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px"},"croppedSizesDuotone":{"aspectRatio":1.3274336283185841,"src":"/static/1b78b66aca9593d2fd695aba7e78949d/5c485/pesca-andorra.jpg","srcSet":"/static/1b78b66aca9593d2fd695aba7e78949d/464df/pesca-andorra.jpg 150w,\n/static/1b78b66aca9593d2fd695aba7e78949d/4f3d6/pesca-andorra.jpg 300w,\n/static/1b78b66aca9593d2fd695aba7e78949d/5c485/pesca-andorra.jpg 600w,\n/static/1b78b66aca9593d2fd695aba7e78949d/a6ba0/pesca-andorra.jpg 900w","sizes":"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px"}}}},"isFeatured":"no"}}},{"node":{"id":"1a87f29b-2d02-5b93-a3b7-dc34df7d3684","path":"/en/stargazing-andorra/","title":"Stargazing in Andorra: Starlight skies, viewpoints and winter outings","date":"02 November 2026","content":"
What makes Andorra a good place for stargazing?
\n
Andorra lends itself to stargazing for three reasons: altitude, narrow valleys and a small population. This is a mountain country of small and medium-sized villages, and you notice it as soon as you leave the urban stretch of Andorra la Vella and Escaldes-Engordany. The best-documented area is La Massana, whose Andorra Comapedrosa Starlight project holds the Starlight Foundation’s double certification as both a Reserve and a Tourist Destination. According to the newspaper Alto Andorra, only around twenty regions worldwide share that double distinction.
\n
If you stay at Hotel Grau Roig, which features in the MICHELIN Guide, you sleep above 2,000 metres, at the opposite end of the country from La Massana. That gives you two options: look at the sky on your own around Grau Roig, or book a guided night on the other side of Andorra.
\n
What the Starlight label means
\n
The certification recognises the quality of the night sky and the work done to protect it, but it also requires something for visitors. In La Massana that means signposted viewpoints, guides and Starlight instructors, seasonal activities and workshops. It is the best place to start if this is your first time, because you need no astronomy knowledge and no equipment.
\n
What you can see with the naked eye
\n
On a clear, moonless night you will see far more than you might expect without a telescope. The La Massana outings focus on exactly that: naked-eye observation, constellations and their mythology, the best time of year for each one, and sky maps. There is no age limit, so it works well for families.
\n
The best places in Andorra for an astronomy trip
\n
These are the night-sky spots listed by Andorra’s tourist board, all of them in the parish of La Massana.
\n
Roca de la Sabina viewpoint, Arinsal
\n
It sits at kilometre 4 of the CS-520 road, at an altitude of 1,896 metres. Its design allows access for people with reduced mobility, and it includes information in Braille, tactile reliefs and QR codes with audio and sign language. By day it looks towards the avalanche path that caused serious damage in Arinsal in 1996.
\n
Coll de la Botella, Pal
\n
This is the starting point for guided activities in both winter and summer. If you join a snowshoe outing or a summer session, you will most likely end up here. The Vallnord area also has other ideas to make the most of the trip during the day.
\n
Comapedrosa Natural Park
\n
Visit Andorra also mentions it as a good place to look at the sky. This is high-mountain terrain, so only go if you know the way back in the dark and carry the right equipment.
\n
Near Grau Roig
\n
You do not need to cross the country for a first look at the sky. Choose a clear night, wrap up warm and move away from the lights of the buildings. By day, the Pessons lakes are the classic walk from here, and the photography routes around Andorra will help you find good landscape compositions. At night, do not head into the mountains without a guide.
\n
Tips and equipment for stargazing in Andorra
\n
You do not need a telescope to enjoy a good night. You do need to plan it a little.
\n
Choose your date carefully
\n
\n
Check the Moon phase. The nights around the new Moon are the darkest. A full Moon wipes out many faint stars and almost all of the Milky Way.
\n
Check the forecast. Mountain weather changes quickly, so look at high cloud and wind as well.
\n
Note the meteor showers. The Quadrantids (early January), the Perseids (around 12 August) and the Geminids (around 14 December) are the three most active of the year.
\n
\n
What to bring
\n
\n
Layers. At altitude it gets cold at night, even in summer. For summer outings, the organisers recommend suitable footwear and clothing, plus a blanket to sit or lie on.
\n
A red-light torch. White light ruins your eyes’ adaptation to the dark, which takes between 20 and 30 minutes.
\n
A star map app in night mode, and as little phone use as possible.
\n
Binoculars, if you have them. They are easier to use than a telescope and work very well for star clusters and the Moon.
\n
\n
If you want to take photos
\n
The La Massana photographers’ association (AFVAN) runs astrophotography workshops with expert photographers, who teach night photography techniques along the parish’s astronomical paths. You will need a tripod and a camera that allows long exposures.
\n
Astronomy events and themed nights in Andorra
\n
Snowshoeing under the stars in winter
\n
Winter is the high season at Grau Roig, and it has its own astronomical outing too. From 1 December, on Fridays, Saturdays and public holidays, there is a night-time snowshoe outing from Coll de la Botella: you learn to use the snowshoes and then observe the sky. Book with Màgic Experience on (+376) 355 131 or at info@magicexperience.com. If you enjoy the format, take a look at other snowshoe routes in Andorra.
\n
Summer outings
\n
From July to September there are stargazing outings in the Coll de la Botella area. They are led by professional guides and Starlight instructors, and you can also arrange a tailor-made experience with astronomy guides.
\n
Andorra Comapedrosa Astronomy Festival
\n
It takes place in June in Arinsal. The 2026 edition, the fourth, ran from 12 to 14 June and was extended to three nights. It included a lights-out in the village on the Friday, naked-eye sessions from 11 pm, six automated telescopes for viewing galaxies and nebulae, talks, children’s workshops and cosmic-themed menus in local restaurants. The programme is published in the La Massana events calendar.
\n
Starlight Meetings in 2027
\n
Andorra Comapedrosa will host the International Starlight Astrotourism Meetings in 2027. If your interest in astrotourism goes beyond a single night, make a note of it.
\n
Recommended accommodation and services for astronomy lovers in Andorra
\n
How to plan the night from Grau Roig
\n
The drive is the key point. From Grau Roig, follow the CG-2 down towards Encamp and Escaldes-Engordany, then take the CG-3 up towards La Massana. You will be returning in the small hours on mountain roads, so do not improvise: in winter, check the state of Andorra’s roads first and make sure the car is ready for snow. For bookings or information, the La Massana Tourist Office is available on (+376) 835 693 and at turisme@comumassana.ad.
\n
Before and after looking at the sky
\n
A night of stargazing goes well with a quiet day. The hotel spa has a sauna, Turkish bath, jacuzzi and pool, just what you need after the cold, and for dinner before you set off there is La Vaquería, El Teatro del Vino, La Marmita or La Fromagerie. If you come during the ski season, you can spend the morning on the Grandvalira slopes and keep Friday or Saturday night for the snowshoe outing. And if the sky does not cooperate, things to do in Andorra has alternatives for the rest of your stay.
\n","categories":[{"id":"0e8c2633-22cd-52a4-8bfe-e028a5ba997f","name":"Culture","slug":"culture","parentElement":null},{"id":"425a3962-c27d-569c-ae7b-a85f0e6bb381","name":"Adventure","slug":"adventure","parentElement":null}],"acf":{"subtitle":"","lead":"Stargazing in Andorra: La Massana's Starlight viewpoints, winter snowshoe outings, the astronomy festival and practical tips for your night under the stars.","featuredMedia":null,"isFeatured":"no"}}},{"node":{"id":"649996ab-9f8f-5129-8374-4d00e2706764","path":"/en/art-classes-andorra/","title":"Art classes in Andorra: courses, galleries and open-air sculpture","date":"02 November 2026","content":"
Art classes in Andorra: what actually exists
\n
If you are looking for art classes in Andorra, it helps to be clear about one thing from the start: what is on offer is not really designed as a tourist product. These are municipal courses and activities run by local associations, with small groups and a calendar that follows the school year. What you can reach during a stay is an art school that sells blocks of hours, astrophotography outings, galleries with plenty of personality and a collection of contemporary sculpture spread across every parish.
\n
Here is what there is, where to find it and how to ask about a place, so that you can put together your own creative break from up in the mountains.
\n
The Escola d’Art in Andorra la Vella
\n
Disciplines for adults
\n
The leading option is the Escola d’Art run by the Comú of Andorra la Vella, at the La Llacuna Cultural Centre (carrer Mossèn Cinto Verdaguer, 4). Its programme for the 2026-27 academic year offers workshops for anyone aged 15 or over, in an open weekly format and nearly always in two-hour blocks:
\n
\n
Painting and drawing, to work at your own pace.
\n
Ceramics, one of the most hands-on disciplines on the programme.
\n
Printmaking and jewellery, two techniques that are hard to find outside a school with its own workshop.
\n
Life drawing, with a maximum of 10 students.
\n
Furniture restoration.
\n
\n
More advanced students can show their work at La Llacuna itself, so it is worth looking at what is on the walls even if you are only dropping by.
\n
Photography and film
\n
Photography has its own section: using the camera, controlling light, film photography, digital editing in Lightroom and personal projects. The single-subject courses take a maximum of seven people. There is also a film history course, with themes such as the spy thriller and Korean and Japanese cinema.
\n
Prices and blocks of hours
\n
According to the 2026-27 brochure, enrolment for the adult workshops costs €89 and the monthly fee is €40 for one day a week. For someone passing through, the blocks of hours are the most interesting option: 10 hours for €103.50 or 20 hours for €142, to use at your own pace and on a timetable agreed with the teacher, subject to availability.
\n
How to enrol
\n
You enrol at the centre itself, by phone (730 037), by email (lallacuna@comuandorra.ad) or in person. The workshops are aimed at people who live in the country, so before planning anything, ask whether you can join with a block of hours during your stay and which dates are available. Read the full Escola d’Art programme before you get in touch.
\n
Astrophotography in La Massana
\n
For an activity that fits more easily into a trip, look towards La Massana. The parish photographers’ association runs introductory astrophotography workshops: experienced photographers explain the principles and techniques, then accompany participants along the area’s astronomical trails. The parish is recognised as a Starlight Reserve and Tourist Destination thanks to its low light pollution.
\n
In winter, from 1 December, there are also night-time snowshoe outings to Coll de la Botella on Fridays, Saturdays and public holidays. Ask at the La Massana Tourist Office (+376 835 693 or turisme@comumassana.ad). You will find more details in our guide to stargazing in Andorra. If landscape photography is more your thing, add our photography routes around Andorra.
\n
Galleries and exhibition spaces where you can see art
\n
Private galleries
\n
\n
Galeria Alta, in Anyós: specialises in photography by international artists.
\n
Set Art Gallery, in Santa Coloma since 2003: small-format work designed to be lived with at home.
\n
Pilar Riberaygua Gallery, in Andorra la Vella: contemporary art, founded in 1985.
\n
Desig(n) Gallery, in Andorra la Vella: one-off handmade pieces.
\n
ART LAB Andorra: contemporary art with a particular focus on pop art.
\n
\n
Before setting off, check the opening hours directly with each gallery.
\n
Public exhibition spaces near Grau Roig
\n
The closest to the hotel are the Pas de la Casa exhibition halls, at the tourist office: they host temporary shows across different disciplines and a permanent display of old photographs of the town. It makes a fine choice for a snowy afternoon. Further down the valley, the Comú d’Encamp hall exhibits work by national artists.
\n
In Escaldes-Engordany, the Art Centre (CAEE) is the permanent home of the work of sculptor Josep Viladomat, with temporary exhibitions on the second floor and free guided tours with limited places. If you come across recommendations for the Carmen Thyssen Museum, bear in mind that it is listed as closed until further notice.
\n
Open-air sculpture, with no opening hours or tickets
\n
One of the best art lessons in Andorra is out on the street. In 1991, a symposium marking the 25th anniversary of the CASS left eight contemporary works dotted around the country, by artists such as Mauro Staccioli, Dennis Oppenheim and Carlos Cruz-Díez. Later, in 2002, another international symposium selected the sculptures on the Iron Route in Ordino, with pieces by Alberto Carneiro, Rachid Khimoune and Mark Brusse.
\n
In Andorra la Vella, the sculpture park on carrer Prat de la Creu brings together work by Miquel Barceló, Manolo Valdés and Jaume Plensa, among others. You will find the full route in open-air sculpture in Andorra.
\n
Early art and crafts
\n
The country has more than 30 Romanesque churches, some with mural paintings, such as Sant Martí de la Cortinada. You can round off the visit with Andorra’s sacred art. To see local makers, the Mercat de la Vall takes place on the first Saturday of each month, from spring to early autumn, in the old quarter of Andorra la Vella.
\n
How to plan your creative break from Grau Roig
\n
In winter
\n
Winter is a good time to combine snow and culture. The Escola d’Art courses are in full swing, and a morning on the slopes leaves the afternoon free to head down to a gallery or visit the CAEE. The hotel is right on the slopes, in the Grau Roig sector of Grandvalira.
\n
At the hotel
\n
To unwind afterwards, there is the spa with its heated pool, sauna and Turkish bath, plus five dining spaces: La Vaquería, El Teatro del Vino, La Marmita, La Fromagerie and Secret Room. Hotel Grau Roig is listed in the MICHELIN Guide with One Key.
\n","categories":[{"id":"0e8c2633-22cd-52a4-8bfe-e028a5ba997f","name":"Culture","slug":"culture","parentElement":null},{"id":"425a3962-c27d-569c-ae7b-a85f0e6bb381","name":"Adventure","slug":"adventure","parentElement":null}],"acf":{"subtitle":"Where to learn about and see art in the country","lead":"Art classes in Andorra: ceramics, painting and photography courses, galleries and sculpture routes for planning a creative break.","featuredMedia":null,"isFeatured":"no"}}},{"node":{"id":"b048a88b-2755-5f81-99c6-e52206a7cc25","path":"/en/andorra-craft-market-local-products/","title":"Andorra’s craft market: dates, places and local products","date":"02 November 2026","content":"
Discover the charms of Andorra’s craft market
\n
If you are looking for “Andorra’s craft market” as though it were a building with fixed opening hours, you will not find it. What exists is better for anyone planning a trip: several regular markets, nearly all in Andorra la Vella, each with its own date and character. The trick is knowing which one coincides with your stay.
\n
The markets you can visit
\n
\n
Mercat de la Vall: first Saturday of every month, from May to October, in the historic centre of Andorra la Vella.
\n
The Fira craft market: during the Andorra la Vella Fair, along the riverside promenade.
\n
Festa Major market: first Saturday in August, during the town festival.
\n
Sant Jordi fair: on 23 April.
\n
Poblet de Nadal: Christmas market in Plaça del Poble.
\n
Fira de Nadal in Ordino: in December, in Ordino.
\n
\n
The most craft-focused: Mercat de la Vall
\n
It has been held since 2016 and reached its eleventh edition in 2026. It is organised by the parish council with the historic centre traders’ association, Andorran agricultural producers and artisans, and the La Xarranca visual artists’ association. It is open to artisans, artists and food producers with original, high-quality, locally created goods. That is why it comes closest to what you picture when you think of a craft market: local produce, antiques and handmade crafts.
\n
Where they take place
\n
Almost everything happens in Andorra la Vella, which you reach by road from Grau Roig. It is best to plan your visit as a half-day outing and combine it with time in the town. Before you go, read our article on road conditions, especially in winter.
\n
Unique local products you will find in Andorra
\n
Each market has its own offering, so it helps to know what to look for at each one. The details below come from the Andorra la Vella tourist office.
\n
Food and local produce
\n
At Mercat de la Vall you will find local goods from food producers. At the Fira market there are local products and artisan food, along with crêpes, churros and sweets. The Festa Major market also has food among its stalls.
\n
Local wine and beer
\n
Andorra makes wine, though many people do not realise it. Visit Andorra lists wineries such as Borda Sabaté 1944, Casa Auvinyà, Casa Beal, Celler Mas Berenguer and Casus Belli. There is also a local beer, Alpha, in Arinsal. These are not market products as such, but they fit if you want to take something from the country home. We cover them in wine tourism in Andorra.
\n
Crafts and objects
\n
At the Festa Major there is costume jewellery, textiles and handmade goods, mostly from local stallholders, although exhibitors from other regions may take part. The Fira de Nadal in Ordino has handicrafts, Christmas decorations, wooden toys, ceramics and jewellery. And at Mercat de la Vall, antiques.
\n
Books and roses
\n
The Sant Jordi fair is another world altogether: books, roses, bookmarks, old books and paper and cloth flowers, with bookshops, florists, social organisations and schools.
\n
A complete guide to visiting Andorra’s craft market
\n
With so many different markets, the best approach is to choose according to the dates of your trip.
\n
In spring and summer
\n
If you are coming between May and October, note the first Saturday of the month: that is Mercat de la Vall day. In August, that Saturday also coincides with the Festa Major, and the town is livelier. If you come in April, the 23rd is Sant Jordi. You can use the trip down to see the historic centre and, while you are at it, set aside another day for the hiking routes or the Pessons lakes, which start from Grau Roig.
\n
In winter, the high season
\n
This is when skiing and markets fit together best. Poblet de Nadal is set up in Plaça del Poble from late November until the end of the festive season, with crafts, food, art, children’s workshops and live music. In recent editions, a giant tió, the Catalan Christmas log, has also awaited children at one end of the square. Dates change every year, so confirm them on the tourism website before you go. The Fira de Nadal in Ordino, smaller and more craft-based, is concentrated in December on Carrer Major, Plaça Major and Plaça de la Closa.
\n
A good plan: a morning on the Grandvalira slopes and an afternoon at the market with the Christmas lights on.
\n
Practical tips
\n
\n
Always check the date: these are regular markets, not permanent ones.
\n
Bring some cash just in case, as not every stall at a market works the same way.
\n
If you are crossing the border, check the customs limits before loading up on goods.
\n
Ask who made what you are buying. At these markets, with luck, the maker will tell you.
\n
\n
The benefits of buying at Andorra’s craft market
\n
Andorra is famous for its shops, but the experience of a market is very different from that of a shopping avenue.
\n
Direct contact with the maker
\n
Mercat de la Vall is designed for artisans, artists and producers with local creations. That gives you something a large retailer rarely offers: talking to the person who made the product.
\n
A complement to your shopping
\n
The Fira market links the fairground with the Avinguda Meritxell shopping area via plaça de la Rotonda, so you can easily combine the two. If more classic shopping is your thing, we have guides to shopping in Andorra and buying perfume in Andorra.
\n
A way of seeing the town
\n
Mercat de la Vall takes you into the historic centre, a part of Andorra la Vella that many visitors who come only to shop overlook. And it is easier to understand what craft means here if you first visit the Casa Cristo ethnographic museum.
\n
The most popular craft products in Andorra
\n
Without sales data you cannot draw up a serious ranking, but these categories come up time and again at the country’s markets.
\n
Costume jewellery and jewellery
\n
You will find them at the Festa Major and the Fira de Nadal in Ordino. They make a good souvenir if you are travelling light.
\n
Ceramics and wooden toys
\n
These are typical of the Ordino market in December, and an easy gift to take home in the middle of the Christmas season.
\n
Textiles
\n
You will find them at the Festa Major market. Ask about their origin, because exhibitors from other regions may also attend.
\n
Artisan food
\n
It features at nearly all of them. If you would then like to enjoy mountain cuisine at a proper table, Hotel Grau Roig, listed in the MICHELIN Guide, has several options: market and seasonal cuisine at La Marmita, fondues and raclettes at La Fromagerie, traditional food at La Vaquería and wine pairings drawing on more than 300 labels at El Teatro del Vino. And in Andorra la Vella, Dalí’s sculpture Noblesse du temps lets you frame the river, the mountains and the Caldea tower in the background.
\n
A phenomenon for your diary
\n
If you are coming in summer, the news outlet Alto reports an alignment from 6 to 8 August: the rising sun shines through the hole in Pic d’Arcalís. It is a very rare sight, but check the access and conditions before heading up in the dark.
\n
Lakes near the hotel
\n
Very close to Grau Roig are the Pessons lakes, a convenient choice if you do not want to go far. The Pessons cirque can also be seen from the terrace at La Vaquería, so you can take photos while you eat.
\n
Where to rest
\n
The hotel has five room types, from Auténtica to Suite Deluxe. Before booking, ask what views each one has if they matter to you: on a photography trip, the view from the window matters.
\n
Dining to recharge
\n
After a day on the trail, you have five dining spaces: La Vaquería, El Teatro del Vino, La Marmita, La Fromagerie and Secret Room, plus the Copper Bar for reviewing your photos over a drink. Check which ones are open on your dates and book in good time.
\n
Photography routes in Andorra: tips for getting the best shot
\n
A few simple decisions make all the difference in the mountains, whatever your equipment.
\n
1. Prepare the right equipment
\n
Prioritise what you will really carry: a camera body, a wide-angle lens for landscapes and a light telephoto are usually enough. Add spare batteries, memory cards and a cloth to clean the lens. If you plan to shoot at night or use long exposures, bring a tripod.
\n
2. Make the most of the morning light
\n
The first hours of the day offer soft light, ideal for landscapes. If you are going to do one of the hiking routes before dawn, check the access and take a head torch. Not all high mountain roads are always open, or equally easy in the dark.
\n
3. Rest well between outings
\n
The mountains are tiring, and your photos suffer for it. Set aside an afternoon for the spa or for reviewing your shots so far; you will see more clearly what you still need to photograph.
\n
4. Go with someone if you do not know the area
\n
If you want to explore lesser-known areas, hire a local mountain guide rather than improvising. In winter, the hotel’s website also mentions guides for snowshoe outings: ask at reception how they are arranged.
\n
5. Enjoy the snowy landscapes
\n
In the snow season, Andorra changes completely. Snow fools the light meter, so raise the exposure compensation to stop it looking grey. Protect your batteries from the cold by keeping them close to your body, and let the camera acclimatise when you go back indoors to avoid condensation.
\n
6. Plan your journeys
\n
Andorra is small, but mountain journeys take longer than they look. Group your spots by valley and check the state of the roads before you set off, especially in winter.
\n
The best seasons and times for photography in Andorra
\n
Each season offers something different, and it is worth choosing your route according to the time of year.
\n
Spring and autumn: colour
\n
In spring you will find green meadows and snow still on the peaks, and in autumn, red and golden tones in the forests. If this time of year appeals to you, read our guide to Andorra in autumn.
\n
Summer: sunrise and sunset
\n
The days are long, so there is more leeway for planning your outings. Get up early for lake routes such as Tristaina, and avoid the middle of the day, when the light is harsher and there are more people on the trails.
\n
Winter: the snowy landscape
\n
This is the high season at Grau Roig. You can photograph freshly fallen snow first thing in the morning, skiers on the Grandvalira slopes or snowshoe outings. To take photos on the snow, wear technical clothing and thin gloves that let you handle the camera.
\n
At night: the stars
\n
With clear skies and little moon, the mountain sky deserves an outing. You will find more information in our guide to stargazing.
\n
Recommended equipment for your photography routes in Andorra
\n
There is no need to carry everything. This is what you will use most in the mountains.
\n
Camera and lenses
\n
A wide-angle lens will serve you for valleys and lakes, and a telephoto for isolating peaks and details. If you use your phone, take a small tripod and a power bank.
\n
Filters and accessories
\n
A polariser helps with reflections on water and in the sky, and a neutral density filter lets you lengthen exposures on rivers and waterfalls. Add a waterproof cover in case the weather changes.
\n
Clothing and footwear
\n
Wear mountain boots, layers and a waterproof jacket. At altitude the weather changes quickly, even in summer. It is not a long stretch, but there is plenty to see if you are not in a hurry: a record-breaking pass, a lake shared by two countries, French mountain villages and a spa town with centuries of history. These are the stops worth knowing, from south to north. If you are staying at Hotel Grau Roig, listed in the MICHELIN Guide, all of them are within reach for a day trip.
\n
Port d’Envalira
\n
At 2,408 m, this is the highest paved road in the Pyrenees, linking Pas de la Casa with the rest of Andorra. It is worth driving up at least once for the views. If the weather is against you, there is the Envalira toll tunnel, opened in 2002, nearly 3 km long and at around 2,000 m above sea level.
\n
Pas de la Casa
\n
This is the gateway to Andorra from France. It belongs to the parish of Encamp, like Grau Roig, and stands at over 2,000 m. In winter it is part of Grandvalira, and at any time of year it serves as a shopping street. If you plan to take something home, check our guide to shopping in Andorra first.
\n
L’Hospitalet-près-l’Andorre
\n
Now in France, this is where the N22 begins, the road that climbs to Pas de la Casa and connects with the Envalira tunnel. It has a railway station, linked by bus to Pas de la Casa, which makes it a useful option if you are travelling without a car.
\n
Must-see historic places near the Andorran border
\n
The history of this border is best read on the other side, in the Ariège valley. First, though, it is worth clearing up a common mistake: some Andorran monuments cited as part of this route are not on it at all.
\n
Ax-les-Thermes and the Bassin des Ladres
\n
This is the main stop on the French side. Ax-les-Thermes stands at 720 m, about 35 km north-east of Andorra la Vella, where the Oriège, Ariège and Lauze rivers meet. The Romans already used its waters, and today it has around 60 sulphurous springs between 18 and 78 °C feeding three thermal spas.
\n
The most curious sight is the Bassin des Ladres, or lepers’ pool: a public basin built in 1260 by Roger IV, Count of Foix, fed with water at around 77 °C. According to tradition, it was built to treat soldiers returning from the Crusades with leprosy. It is a registered historic monument.
\n
The trail of the escape lines
\n
This valley also played its part in the Second World War. Many escape routes towards Andorra started at Ussat-les-Bains, and the Dutch-Paris line passed through Foix. We tell the story in the freedom route in Andorra.
\n
What lies in the other direction
\n
The church of Santa Coloma is one of the oldest monuments in the country, pre-Romanesque in origin (8th to 9th centuries), with its current appearance and bell tower dating from a 12th-century remodelling. But it is in Andorra la Vella, in the opposite direction. The Sanctuary of Meritxell, in Canillo, about 20 km from Pas de la Casa, also lies towards the interior. If they interest you, give them another day with our guide to Romanesque churches.
\n
Unique experiences on the route to France from Andorra
\n
Beyond seeing villages from the car, a couple of outings justify the trip in their own right.
\n
Bathing in thermal water
\n
Ax-les-Thermes is the classic choice. At the Bassin des Ladres, every year on St John’s Day, locals bathe after daubing themselves with ash. If you would prefer a fuller circuit without leaving Andorra, there is Caldea, and at the hotel itself, the spa with its heated pool.
\n
Skiing on both sides
\n
In the snow season, which runs roughly from November to April, Grau Roig has the Grandvalira slopes right at hand. If you fancy a change of scene for a day, on the other side is Ax 3 Domaines, above Ax-les-Thermes, with around 75 km of runs according to figures published some years ago. Check the latest information on its website before you go.
\n
Going by train
\n
The railway line from Foix passes through Ax-les-Thermes and continues south through Mérens-les-Vals to L’Hospitalet-près-l’Andorre. For anyone travelling as far as Toulouse, it is an alternative to driving through the mountains.
\n
Parks and nature on the way between Andorra and France
\n
One correction is needed here: the Comapedrosa Natural Park, home to the country’s highest peak (2,942 m), is in La Massana, next to Pal Arinsal. It is not on the way to France. If you want to see it, that is a different trip, at the other end of Andorra. What you have on this route is just as good and much closer.
\n
Pessons lakes
\n
The route starts at El Cubil, in the Grau Roig ski area itself. The official figures are 5.95 km, 707 m of ascent and 3 to 6 hours, passing Estany Primer, Rodó, Meligar, les Fonts and Cap dels Pessons. You will find all the details in the Pessons lakes.
\n
Estany de les Abelletes
\n
This lake marks the natural border, with part of it in French territory, and can be reached from Pas de la Casa on a walk of about 3 km there and back. It is probably the simplest way to set foot on the border.
\n
Bésines and Lanoux
\n
To the north, in France, the Coll de Coma d’Anyell (2,470 m) links the Bésines valley with the Lanoux lake. The Porteille des Bésines can be reached via the Bésines refuge from the south, or from the north via Estagnas. These are high-mountain routes and should be planned with a map.
\n
In winter
\n
Avalanches sometimes close the N20 below the Col de Puymorens, so check the road conditions before setting off. With snow on the ground, snowshoes and snowmobiles are two more ways to enjoy the landscape without straying far from Grau Roig.
\n
Food and culture on the journey to France from Andorra
\n
Before you leave, at the hotel
\n
Start or end the trip at the hotel. At La Marmita you have classic market and seasonal cuisine; at La Vaquería, traditional mountain food by the slopes; at La Fromagerie, fondues and raclettes. El Teatro del Vino is the most avant-garde option and focuses on pairing, with a cellar of more than 300 wines, cavas and champagnes. There are also Secret Room, the Copper Bar and the Summer Lounge.
\n
Andorra, before crossing
\n
If you have time, you can visit Andorra’s villages before heading north. And remember that crossing means going through customs, so check what you are allowed to take before loading the boot.
\n
On the other side
\n
Ax-les-Thermes has had a spa culture since the 19th century, and the St John’s bath is the area’s liveliest tradition. Foix, the historic capital of the counts who built the Bassin des Ladres, lies further north on the same railway line. Check times and opening hours before you go, as many services in the valley change with the season.
\n","categories":[{"id":"0e8c2633-22cd-52a4-8bfe-e028a5ba997f","name":"Culture","slug":"culture","parentElement":null},{"id":"425a3962-c27d-569c-ae7b-a85f0e6bb381","name":"Adventure","slug":"adventure","parentElement":null}],"acf":{"subtitle":"From Grau Roig to the Ariège valley, stop by stop","lead":"Way to France from Andorra: Port d'Envalira, Pas de la Casa, Abelletes lake and Ax-les-Thermes, the real stops near the border.","featuredMedia":null,"isFeatured":"no"}}},{"node":{"id":"4edd31b8-f805-5ce6-8b9c-29de8b45e9ae","path":"/en/thermal-waters-escaldes-engordany/","title":"Visiting the natural thermal waters of Escaldes-Engordany","date":"02 November 2026","content":"
A guide to visiting the thermal waters of Escaldes-Engordany
\n
Escaldes-Engordany owes its name and much of its history to the hot water that comes out of the mountain. There is no site called the “thermal springs” that you buy a ticket for: you enjoy the thermal water in specific places, chiefly Caldea and certain hotels in the parish, and you can see it at the Roc del Metge spring. This guide explains what is available and how to plan it.
\n
If you are staying at Hotel Grau Roig, which appears in the MICHELIN Guide, bear in mind that Escaldes is half an hour away by car. The hotel has its own spa, with a sauna, Turkish bath, jacuzzi, pool and gym, but no thermal waters: for that you need to head down to the valley.
\n
Where the water comes from
\n
A large geological fault runs through Escaldes-Engordany, and thermal water rises through it. The best-known spring is Roc del Metge, named after a French doctor who owned the land. According to Visit Andorra, the water is sulphurous and sodic and emerges at 68-71°C, among the highest temperatures in Europe for a spring of this type.
\n
A long history
\n
The Gran Enciclopèdia Catalana records that the Romans already knew about the properties of these waters, and that the place name comes from the “fonts d’aigües calentes”, the hot springs. Those springs turned the town into a well-known spa. Today it forms a continuous urban area with Andorra la Vella, at an altitude of about 1,050 metres.
\n
Benefits of the thermal waters
\n
The waters of Escaldes have long been associated with rest and looking after the body. Visit Andorra links them to joint pain, rheumatism, circulatory problems and stress, but it is best to take this for what it is: a thermal tradition, not a guaranteed medical treatment.
\n
What you can expect
\n
\n
Relaxation: hot water, jets and contrasts in temperature help release tension, which is welcome after skiing or walking in the mountains.
\n
A sense of wellbeing for the skin: sulphurous waters have a particular texture and a characteristic smell, which you will notice near the spring.
\n
Switching off: a couple of hours of water and steam make a good break on a busy trip.
\n
\n
When to check first
\n
If you have a cardiovascular condition, are pregnant or are undergoing treatment, consult your doctor before using saunas, hot baths or thermal circuits.
\n
Where to bathe in thermal waters
\n
These are the options genuinely available in Escaldes-Engordany.
\n
Caldea
\n
In 1987 the Comú of Escaldes-Engordany launched the project to make use of the thermal waters, and Caldea opened on 26 March 1994. It was designed by the French architect Jean-Michel Ruols, and its 80-metre glass tower is the tallest building in Andorra. In its first 25 years it welcomed more than 8 million visitors.
\n
Inside you will find indoor and outdoor lagoons, hydromassage pools, a sauna, a hammam, a massage area and places to eat. For more detail, read our guide to Caldea.
\n
Inúu and Likids
\n
Inúu is the quietest part of the complex, for over-16s, with indoor and outdoor lagoons, waterfalls, swan-neck jets, a jacuzzi and treatment rooms. Likids is designed for children aged 3 to 8, with activities led by instructors. If you are travelling as a family, these two areas let you organise your time very differently.
\n
Hotel Termes Carlemany
\n
In the centre of Escaldes, Termes Carlemany takes water from the Roc del Metge spring and offers thermal water in its rooms, a spa, jacuzzi, Turkish bath and Vichy showers. According to Visit Andorra, it also has an outdoor thermal pool at 27°C. If you are not staying there, ask whether non-residents can use the facilities.
\n
The Roc del Metge spring
\n
This is not a place to bathe, but somewhere to see where it all begins. Visit Andorra says you can get close to the water and touch it, but be careful: it emerges at a very high temperature, so keep a close eye on children and approach it with caution.
\n
How to get there from Grau Roig
\n
From Grau Roig, take the CG-2 south and drive down through Encamp. Coming along this road you reach Escaldes-Engordany before Andorra la Vella, so there is no need to cross the capital. The drive to Caldea takes about half an hour in good weather.
\n
In winter, check the state of the roads before setting off, and allow for heavier traffic at weekends. If you leave the car in the centre, much of what there is to see in Escaldes can be reached on foot.
\n
Tips for your visit
\n
Booking
\n
At Caldea it is best to buy your ticket online in advance, especially at weekends, during the ski season and in August. Check prices and opening hours on its website, as they change with the season.
\n
What to bring
\n
A swimming costume and flip-flops are the basics. Before you go, check the centre’s rules on swimming caps, towels and lockers, as some items can be hired.
\n
The best winter plan
\n
Winter, from November to April, is Andorra’s high season. A good plan is to ski in the morning on the Grandvalira slopes and head down to Caldea in the afternoon, or save it for a day when the weather is not on your side. Bathing in an outdoor lagoon in the cold mountain air is one of the best parts of the visit.
\n
What else to see in Escaldes
\n
Make time to visit the Perfume Museum, the Escaldes-Engordany Art Centre or the church of Sant Miquel d’Engolasters. And if you want to keep relaxing when you get back, the hotel spa is a good way to round off the day. For dinner, Grau Roig has La Marmita, La Fromagerie and the hotel’s other restaurants.
\n","categories":[{"id":"0e8c2633-22cd-52a4-8bfe-e028a5ba997f","name":"Culture","slug":"culture","parentElement":null},{"id":"425a3962-c27d-569c-ae7b-a85f0e6bb381","name":"Adventure","slug":"adventure","parentElement":null}],"acf":{"subtitle":"Where
